streaks of red, the overall production was simple yet affecting. The direction by Jessica Watson was sublime.

Next on stage was Mt. Dora’s Bay Street Play-ers Young People’s Theatre’s production of Jeremy Kruse’s Lockers. Featuring vignettes of life in middle school, the company’s young actors, directed by Amanda Warren, brought raucous laughter and a nod of recognition to an audience of appreciative fans.

The production was followed by a second cast of A Class Act Studio’s Cinderella with the Commedia Players. The props, costumes and settings were the same as the earlier production, but the new cast spun a thoroughly fresh, original story. Ms. Briganti’s excellent young performers made the roles their own, delighting the audience with their comic skill, clever ad-libs, and wonderful command of the stage. Two unique performances from the same troupe was a revelation.

Commedia was a popular performance style this year, as the next production was yet another Riosely play, Commedia Puss in Boots. Performed by Bradenton’s Bayshore High School and directed by Brendan Murphy, the cast of five high school

actors relied simply on a stage trunk, beautiful-ly designed, traditional Commedia masks, and a pedal-to-the-metal en-ergy. Rich with lazzi, this well-rehearsed and confident piece was a winner.

The festival conclud-ed with a local favorite. Star Center Youth Theatre of Gainesville presented the only musical this year, Stephen Schwartz’s Godspell, Jr. Lovingly directed by Rhonda Wilson, this wonderfully diverse cast sang their hearts out, performing the classic score with joy and enthusiasm.

The Festival Respondents this year were Teaching Artist Lucy Lynn Bryson and playwright and Theatrefolk founder Lindsay Price. Both gave positive, encouraging feedback to the Festival participants, sharing their love for theatre, education, and young talent. Lindsay and Lucy were also given the diffi cult task of choosing the Festival’s performance awards, which were announced at that evening’s closing ceremonies. Here are this year’s Theatre For Youth Award recipients:

Malik Moore as Best Actor for his role as Jesus in Godspell, Jr.; Claresa Martin as Best Actress for her turn as Rosetta (and Puss) in Commedia Puss in Boots; Dharbi Jens as Best Supporting Actress for her hilari-ous Fairy Godmother in Cinderella with the Commedia Players; and Walker Ford as Best Supporting Actor for his desperate attempt to win election as 6th grade class president in Lockers. Congratulations and bravo to all the award recipients and to all the young talent gracing the Festival stage this year.

The Theatre for Youth Festival was a great success due in part to the amazing production team at Santa Fe College. Special thanks go to Owen Reynolds, Austin Gresham, Bob Fetterman, and their team of staff and students for supporting Theatre For Youth, and the Conference overall with amazing organization and creativity.

Thank you for everything. I look forward to return-ing to Gainesville next year.

At the 55th annual conference, once again the ten minute “On the Spot” playwriting competition was held to great success.

Three groups of four students competed this year and all were from Episcopal School of Jacksonville. These groups met for an evening playwriting work-shop conducted by Santa Fe theatre professor and FTC host, Terry A. Klenk. They were given writing criteria and eighteen hours to collaborate on writing their pieces.

Each piece was presented “reader’s theatre” style at the Saturday presentation in the Santa Fe “black box” and judged by a panel of three, FTC president Rick Kerby, S.F.C. instructor Chris Kozak and Klenk.

10-Minute Playwriting ContestThe winning group’s play “A Debate about Botany!”

was a fun comedic piece in the tradition of sketch com-edy and included coauthors: Caroline Crook, Savannah Fritz, John Michael Currie, and Hannah Marshal.

All groups completed well-thought pieces. The group’s advisor/instructor, Katie Black stated that “This was a highlight of the Festival for all the participants.” And she hoped that “more schools would participate in this really fun activity in the future”.

We hope to do just that as we at FTC tweak and solicit more participation next year. So keep an eye out for this fun activity and how we might approach it next year!

FTC IdolFor the third year, the FTC Idol competition was held

during the Festival.

Winners this year were: First Place: Ryan Monroe Runner-Up: Malik Moore

Distinguished Career Awards

Lifetime AchievementDon E. Jones, Jr.

College/UniversityMikell Pinkney

BY CHRIS CHAVERS–––This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Theatre goes to the inimitable Don E. Jones, Jr.

The fi rst time I met Don was in the early 1980’s when we were on the Writing Team for the fi rst Drama Teacher Certifi cation exam. He was, and is, a veritable fountain of information about the theatre. So much so, that all of us on the writing team would go to him to check our facts, even ones we knew well!

After this experience I felt privileged to have met him and I still feel privileged to count him among my colleagues and friends. Other experiences with Don have included my students and I being adjudicated by him at FTC and Thespians, and taking his “File Folder Scene Design Workshop” at Florida Association for Theatre Education Conference. I have constantly been amazed at how he could use a fi le folder to design a set!

Whenever I am around Mr. Jones I have so much respect for him, because I always learn something. His style of adjudication and teaching has helped me and countless other teachers and students progress in the art of theatre.

Don has accumulated this knowledge through do-ing and constantly learning. He has been Managing/

Artistic Director of a theatre in Wisconsin and a high school drama teacher in New York City, on Long Island and in St. Petersburg, Florida. His academic credits include Yale Drama School, New York Uni-versity Tisch School of the Arts and HB Studios in New York City. He has been recognized as Theatre Educator of the Year by the Florida Association for Theatre Education, and received the Distinguished Career Award in Secondary Theatre from the Florida Theatre Conference in 1992. He was the recipient of the fi rst Florida State Thespians Lifetime Achievement Award. Continuing to serve as Program Chairman and Mainstage Screener for the Florida State Thespian Festival, he adjudicates and presents workshops at several district and state Thespian conferences. Don has, also, served unselfi shly as an adjudicator for FTC and for the Southeastern Theatre Conference for many years. He currently serves as the Secretary for the Florida Association for Theatre Education. As a trustee of the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts and a member of the Board of Directors of the Pinellas County Cultural Committee, he has been able to infl uence, support and expand the involvement of those entities in theatre education.

Last, but certainly not least, Don has played the role of Henry, the old actor, in eight productions of The Fantasticks. He will be glad to make it nine, if asked. It is my privilege to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to a man who is a fi ne example of “Those who can do, teach.”

Don Jones and Chris Chavers

Distinguished Career Awards

BY MARGIE TIMMONS–––It is an honor to be presenting this award to such a deserving person. It is evident the impact she has made on the lives of so many people. She was born in Tryon, North Carolina and at-tended North Carolina School of the Arts, where she met her wonderful husband, Bob, and continued her educa-tion at Old Dominion University graduating in 1993. She was a drama teacher at Northview High School in Virginia until 1997 and then moved to Florida.

She was the object of a bid war between three schools and Ft. Walton Beach High School won the prize. How lucky they are; she is a prize full of energy and love for theatre. Her energy reminds me of the en-ergizer bunny. She just keeps going and going no matter what happens. The phrase “I can’t, I have rehearsal” is Christa. When she was nine months pregnant she had some minor pain, went to the hospital and was in labor. She said “I can’t be in labor, I have rehearsal!”

She is the District I Thespian Chair, on the Board of Florida State Thespians, and president of FATE.

She is devoted to her job and her students and it is my pleasure to present the Distinguished Career Award for Secondary School Theatre to Christa Whittaker.

Christa Whittaker and Margie Timmons

BY MARY BRITT–––One of Florida’s most respected costume designers, Bridget Bartlett, never set out to have a career in theatre. At the age of 30, Bridget was a housewife with fi ve small children, a husband dying of cancer, and in need of a job. She was an excellent seamstress and a friend told her that a Western theme park was looking for someone to design and build costumes for the Can Can girls.

From that most practical beginning, grew a 40-year career. To my knowledge, she never had to apply for an-other job … ever. Every subsequent job resulted from the recommendation of a director, actor, or fellow designer. She started traveling as a guest artist, designing costumes for Once Upon A Stage (Orlando, FL), Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre (Jupiter, FL), Royal Palm Dinner The-atre (Boca Raton, FL), and for many, many years, the Caldwell Theatre Company (Boca Raton, FL).

She received 21 Carbonnel Award nominations for her work in South Florida. In many years, she received multiple nominations and was competing against her-self. Her career extended beyond state boundaries with a long-term relationship with Flat Rock Playhouse – the State Theatre of North Carolina – and other distinguished companies such as Charlotte Rep.

In her hometown of Ocala, Florida, Bridget served as a director emeritus, designer, staff member, and mentor. She loved working in the theatre – being a part of the process, mentoring actors, and dispensing life lessons as well as artistic input. It was one of Bridget’s greatest joys to always encourage those creative and thoughtful souls in theatre, whether on stage or behind the scenes. As each of you embarks on your journey in life, Bridget would have reminded you to lead by example, to listen and learn, to be patient and thoughtful, and to work hard at work worth doing.

Six weeks ago, Bridget lost her battle with cancer, but just 8 days before she died, she fi nished costuming - her fi nal show at Ocala Civic Theatre. Bridget was a powerful force in theatre – and in life – right to the very end, which is why I take such great pleasure in accept-ing this award from the Florida Theatre Conference on behalf of her family tonight. And why I am pleased to share with all of you here who may not have known her personally what an amazing, talented, and special person she was. On her behalf, I wish all of you good luck and great success as you follow your dreams in life.
