Dear Coppard Families,

June is newly arrived and Coppard Glen is as busy as ever! We continue to work in an

environment focused on teaching and learning as well as having a wide array of activities

for students to enjoy. Our grade 3 and 6 students have just completed EQAO testing for

their grades and we know they give their best in all they do. Over the next several weeks

there are field trips to enhance learning, guest speakers to inspire students, assemblies that

build inclusive environments, and rich and authentic learning experiences that engage

learners, as we meet the Ministry's curriculum expectations.

Thanks to our school council, student council and parent community we have had a very

successful fundraising year! With all your support we were able to replace older desktop

technology in the library and replace them with a set of 30 new Chromebooks, with an

additional 10 Chromebooks along with a travel tub purchased for classes to sign out. This

complements the sign out sets we currently have and the 5 Chromebooks in each Grade 2

to 8 class. 20 headsets for student use were also purchased. Funds were utilized to create

outdoor activity bags for our Grade 1 to 3 classes consisting of skipping ropes, basketballs,

tennis balls, gymnastic ribbons, Frisbees, and more, as well as mesh bags to house the

equipment. Funds have supported our Music and Athletic activities. Fundraising monies

also enabled us to bring in guest speakers, performances and specialized physical educa-

tion equipment that all students enjoyed.

As the end of school approaches, we as a staff often take this time to reflect back on our

year. We hope you will also take the time to talk with your child about their school year,

the friendships they have developed, the learning and skills they have achieved and the

activities they have experienced. We are so proud of our students and the hard work and

excellent character they demonstrate every day. We look forward to celebrating those

students who will graduate from Coppard Glen this year at the graduation ceremony on

June 18th. We also wish our Grade 1 French Immersion students heading to Milliken Mills

all the best.

We know it will be a great month ahead as there is still much learning to do and fun to be

had. Thank you to all parents and family members for their ongoing support of our school.

Coppard Character, Recognition and Spirit Assembly

Thursday, June 19th 2019

at 11.05 am

This month’s trait is “ OPTIMISM.”

We maintain a positive attitude. We look on the brighter side of situations. We are able to

see opportunities even in the face of adversity. We have hope for the future.

Character Quotes:

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself

that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming

incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall

surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning”.

— Mahatma Gandhi

Every month at Coppard Glen P.S.,we host our Spirit and Character Assemblies. We gather together as an

entire school from Kindergarten to Grade 8, to show our school spirit by celebrating accomplishments and

recognizing good character. We also have important messages presented from our student groups such as

Student Council, Me to We and our Eco-Team. Parents are always invited to attend

all assemblies.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration commenced on Friday, January 19,2019 for the 2019-2020

school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca.

Children who turn four or five years old during 2018, live within the school boundary

and whose parents are public tax supporters will be eligible to register for

kindergarten.

A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring.

For more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local school.

French Immersion Registrations

French Immersion registration began on January 19, 2019. Parents or guardians of Senior

Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2019, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can

visit or call the school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index

Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this

form, along with one piece of identification showing their address (Property Tax bill or any

utility bill, NO Drivers License), to the designated FI program location to register. Please visit

YRDSB’s website (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Programs-ocations.aspx) to find

the FI program location for your elementary school location.

YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all

who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available

space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. This will allow flexibility in

addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the

FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work

toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specif-

ic period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

HALF DAY OF SCHOOL / EARLY DISMISSAL

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 27, 2019 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:55am.

Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transporta-tion at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrange-ments to address this change in schedule and ensure there is someone to receive their child.

FORKS & SPOONS

Here at Coppard Glen we are an eco-friendly school. Lets all take care of the environment! Please make sure that your children have proper reusable utensils to eat their snacks and lunches. Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS !! to our 2019 Battle of the Books team.

On May 8th, our team travelled to Ellen Fairclough PS to compete against 12 other schools in a fun, literacy competition. To prepare, the students on our team read almost 40 books and practiced for months to learn as much as

possible about each one. The team showed amazing dedication, commitment and hard work. The competition was close. Even though we did not finish in the top three, Coppard was only 12 points behind the winning school.

Well done! We are so proud of you.

Literacy Corner How to Help Prevent the “SUMMER SLIDE”

Research shows that over the summer months, many students forget what they have learned and experience

a “slide” in their learning. This could be due to a lack of practice of reading, writing and math skills. One of

the best ways to prevent this “summer slide” is to engage your children in some fun literacy-based activities,

so they are ready for that first school day in September!

Here are some tips to help your child maintain their literacy skills over the summer:

SIX = SUCCESS: Research has shown that reading just 6 books over the summer can help struggling

readers avoid regressing and stronger readers maintain their skills. Take the time at the beginning of the

summer to select the 6 books together from the local library or from your own family library.

MAKE IT FUN! Keep a tally of pages/books read in your home and challenge each other (parents too!)

to read a certain number of pages in a week, month, or the whole summer. If you reach your family goal,

maybe a trip to get ice cream or to the park may be necessary!

LIBRARY VISITS: Our local library (Aaniin) offers so many fun and interactive programs for both children

and adults. If your child enjoys Science and Math activities, there are many programs centred around

technology and creativity (ask about the Maker Space). As well, the book selections are amazing! Here is

a list of summer programs offered by the Markham Public Libraries:

https://www.markham.ca/wps/portal/home/arts/markham-public-library

You can also join the Summer Reading Club offered by the Markham Public Libraries. See next page for

more info.

DUAL-LANGUAGE LEARNING: If you speak another language at home, perhaps provide your child with

opportunities to read and learn more about that language. Speaking and reading in more than one

language encourages stronger literacy skills in both languages.

READ ALOUD: Your child may not want to read every day when the sun is shining all summer long, so take

the time to read aloud to your child. Pick a favourite book, spread out a blanket on the grass, find a shady

tree and share a special book together.

SHARE YOUR LOVE OF READING: Let your child see you reading...talk about which books you enjoy and

why. GAME TIME: Play literacy-related games: Scrabble, Hangman, crosswords, word searches, Boggle, mental

math games.

SUMMER WRITING: Encourage your child to keep a summer journal. It can be accompanied by photos of

fun summer trips or activities.

TALK, TALK, TALK! Continue to talk with your child and engage them in conversation to help develop their

speaking and listening skills.

Have a Fun and Safe Summer!

Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Kostash☺

Message from Our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, this is a good time to celebrate all your child has learned and achieved. I

hope that you have seen evidence of their growth and learning throughout the year.

Supporting the well-being and achievement of our students is a partnership with families and communities, and I

want to thank you for all that you do to help strengthen our schools and support your child’s learning. We know

that when you ask your child about their learning, help them make connections or participate in school events,

our students and our schools benefit.

I look forward to continuing to build relationships with families over the summer months and in the 2019-2020

school year. As we go into the summer, there are many opportunities to continue supporting your child’s learning

- whether helping to plan a family trip, visiting a local museum, reading a book or participating in one of the many

exciting summer learning programs offered through the Board. I hope that whatever you have planned, you have

a safe and enjoyable summer.

I would also like to offer a special congratulations to the graduating class of 2019. We wish you all the very best

as you move on to this next phase of your life. We look forward to welcoming back all of our new and returning

families in the fall.

A message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees is also available on the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca.

Juanita Nathan,

Board Vice Chair,

Trustee - Wards 7 and 8, Markham.

Snack Club

Our snack program is officially over for another year. While there may be some food for students over the coming weeks, it will be limited and only until we run out.

Please make sure that your child brings a healthy morning snack.

I would like to take this final opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers who have tirelessly shopped, prepared and distributed food to our students every week, and a special thank you to Mrs. Rosen. She kept us organized and made sure that we

always knew exactly what we had in the fridge and what we needed to get each week.

Have a healthy and restful summer!!

Mrs. Cracknell, Snack Program Coordinator
