Investing in IFA’s Young Leaders
2015
Call us now on 1890 924 852 for more information on all of your member benefits and services.
Training and development is of utmost importance to IFA and the Association continuously invests in this area with a particular focus on young leaders. IFA recently ran our 2015 Young Leaders training programme. This 3 day
programme focuses participants on taking a leadership role within IFA, personal development
skills and strategic planning on their home farms. It is delivered by IFA in partnership with
Macra and Farm Business Skillnet. All participants are involved in their local IFA branch and
are identified by Counties as people who may have the ambition to become future County and
National IFA leaders.
Broadband for Rural Ireland: IFA is lobbying hard to get a high-speed
broadband network for Rural Ireland. The National Broadband Plan aims to ensure that all
homes and businesses in Ireland have access to fast, reliable and affordable broadband.
See page 3 for more on the National Broadband Plan. Given the importance of technology in
agriculture, IFA believe that it is imperative that Rural Dwellers have the most relevant digital
resources available to help make life easier in the home and on the farm. IFA’s app, iFarm,
which provides members with market prices, commodity information, weather and farming
news continues to grow with almost 65,000 downloads to date.
Fibre Broadband for IFA Members: IFA Telecom has launched a new
high-speed broadband fibre product. High-speed fibre broadband not only gives farmers
access to services, information and resources online, it also enables farmers to make exciting
diversifications in their Farm Businesses. IFA Members can get superfast high-speed fibre
broadband with speeds of up to 100Mb from only €10*.
NEW Mobile Deal for members: IFA Member Services has negotiated
a new 3-year affinity deal with Vodafone Ireland that is worth €10 million in savings to IFA
members. Learn more on page 4. IFA is also delighted to announce Hertz Ireland as a new
member benefit partner. IFA members can now get 10% off global car hire, 15% off van hire
in Ireland as well as other free add on benefits. Our member services team understand the
needs of farmers and works continuously to ensure that you get the greatest savings possible.

Conor Heaney is a part time farmer in Belcarra Co. Mayo. Conor participated in a rural fibre roll out trial with eircom wholesale. Conor’s livestock is housed in an out shed that is a distance from his home. ‘’It means that I can stay at home with my family during the evening time and can monitor the shed with my phone or on my TV. During the day at work I can also access and view my cows instead of relying on my neighbour to check in. We have limited number of people participating in the trial here. Anyone who
isn’t part of it can see the benefits and they want to get on board as soon as possible” said Mr Heaney. The fibre network is being rolled out across the country, call now to see if its available in your area – if not you can register your interest now and avail of our current broadband products and we’ll upgrade you as soon as it becomes available.

At the Launch of the National Broadband Intervention plan in Croke Park, l-r Tim O’ Leary, IFA Deputy President, Minister Alex White & Pat Smith, IFA General Secretary
The National Broadband Plan ExplainedWhat is the National Broadband Plan? The National Broadband Plan sets out the
strategy to deliver high speed broadband
throughout Ireland and is overseen by the
Department of Communications, Energy
and Natural Resources. It is envisaged that
the new network will be future-proofed for
20 years.
Who will get access to high-speed broadband under this scheme? This scheme aims to bring high speed
broadband to 94% of all farms by 2020.
What speeds will we see under this scheme?Under this scheme, rural areas will see
speeds of 30Mbps and higher.
Where can I see the roll-out and delivery map?Visit www.dcenr.ie
How will the Government deliver this plan? While commercial companies have made
significant investment in the fibre network
to date, the Government is intervening to
ensure that broadband is delivered to areas
that are not commercially viable for these
companies. Broadband will be delivered to
rural Ireland through a combination of State
Funding and commercial investment.
When will the roll-out of the national broadband plan happen?A tendering process will begin in December
with the successful bidder or bidders rolling
out the new broadband from the middle
of 2016. Telecom operators who bid for
the project will need to be able to ensure
minimum download speeds of 30Mbps,
minimum upload speeds of 6Mpbs.
To find out more about the National Broadband plan, visit our stand at the national ploughing championships.
IFA & Broadband for Rural IrelandThe significance of a fibre connection in rural Ireland will cause the narrowing of the rural-urban digital divide allowing rural dwellers access to core personal and business Internet services that those with high speed broadband take for granted. IFA is calling for a fibre service under the national broadband plan that is:• Affordable: Products offered must be within the budgets of the
average consumer
• A Fibre network: Speeds must be of a level which allows for
rural homes and businesses to match their urban & European
counterparts
• Future Proofed: The Fibre network should meet the speeds and
data usage of not just todays requirements but those forecasted
in the future
• Accessible: There must be a clear and easy process for rural
dwellers to connect to the service
• Upholds the USO (universal service obligation): The
preservation of the USO is vital for rural Ireland and the new
broadband service & network must fall under it and the
existing copper network that connects rural Ireland cannot be
neglected as a result of the national broadband plan
• Roll out quickly: The broadband plan must meet Key deadlines
and clear penalties should apply if the winning company fail to
meet their targets
• Awarded to a company that has a strict and robust fault
management plan, especially in the areas of storms as this
most affects rural Ireland

IFA and Vodafone sign €10million deal
IFA updates
The Irish Farmers’ Association and Vodafone Ireland have signed a new affinity deal worth over €10million to IFA members. Negotiated by the IFA, the deal will offer the latest smartphones, data and mobile plans at competitive prices. Packages start at €15.
Speaking at the contract signing, James
Kelly, IFA’s Director of Organisation,
said, “Vodafone and the IFA have been in
partnership since 2009. We are working hard
to ensure our members get great value on
their price plans and get access to the latest
mobile technologies. This is important, as
farmers frequently work alone in a variety of
work settings.
Anne O’Leary, CEO of Vodafone Ireland
said, “We are delighted to partner with IFA
for an additional three years. Access to
reliable connectivity can transform lives
and revolutionise businesses. Our strategy
at Vodafone is to invest in the strongest
communications infrastructure to ensure
that regardless of where you live, all
communities including farmers can benefit
from leading edge connectivity that can
both enhance their businesses and promote
farm safety while improving day to day
communication across large geographic
areas.”
IFA members can avail of a full suite of
specially discounted handsets including the
iphone6, the Samsung S6 as well as durable
handsets like the Samsung XCover3, which
can be used in challenging environments
and can withstand everyday elements such
as dust, shock, water and falls. Members
can also avail of all the technology resources
Vodafone offer including high definition
voice calls, data services and the most
widespread 4G network in Ireland.

IFA are continuously working to improve iFarm, IFA’s smartphone app, to ensure that our members have access to important and relevant information on the move.“It is easier and more convenient than ever
to check the latest farm prices on iFarm.
With our new input surveys, there is greater
transparency across the range of input
costs. Farmers can help fellow farmers by
submitting the prices they pay which will
appear on iFarm in real-time. Sign up for our
alerts and be notified when IFA publishes the
latest price reports” Ethan Cleary, Head of IT
Strategy for the IFA.
What’s new?• Weather where you are and for the next
five days.
• iFarm alerts - receive the latest prices
from IFA as soon as they are published.
• All new input price surveys - helping
farmers get the best possible value for
money on farm costs.

‘I participated in the IFA’s Farm Business Skillnet Young Leaders Programme in 2014. I was privileged to be accepted on the course as spaces were limited. The programme was well designed and exceptionally well delivered. I took part in workshops with other like-minded people who are keen to progress their agri businesses. We learned skills to give us confidence in dealing with confrontational situations and we also met with a bank manager who gave us an insight into what exactly the bank will require for a loan application. I would highly recommend the Young Leaders course as this is supported by Skillnet and one would have to go a long way to get training of this standard. For young people in the agri sector who are keen to expand their business or tighten up on running costs, this course can provide you with many essential tools to streamline your business. While attending the course it was great to meet with key IFA people and staff and our visit to the farm centre in Dublin really highlighted that IFA is working hard for Irish farmers, both at home and across Europe.’
