The Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL)Begins Training at NHR by Bill Beattie

On Monday January 10th, CQL began Interviewer training at West Road with eleven NHR staff. The purpose of this training is to focuson person directed goals and outcomes:how can we at NHR increase the qualityof life for each of the persons wesupport? How can we identify, evaluate, track, and use data we have to developmeaningful programs and goals that aredriven by the wishes, hopes, desires, and goals of the individual beingsupported?

Over the next two months, there will betraining classes given by Jill Westring, from CQL, and Interview CertifiedTrainers Tom McCluskey and Dan Lynch.Tom and Dan will continue training staffthroughout the year, starting with theirfirst class in March or April.

Quality in Practice – Accreditation Note for the Month:

Natural Supports – Caring for and about other people and having other people care for andabout us is what makes our lives meaningful. Many people who receive services have lost touch

with or never developed relationships with other people who are not paid to be with them.Organizations can intentionally assist people in building relationships with people they already

know or can facilitate meeting new people in order to create relationships.

Is there a meeting you can make happen for someone you serve?

During the first round of Interviewer training, participants learnedhow to conduct interviews and collect data that will allow us to

provide better and more person centered services.

Three Plus Four Equals Seven… with More to Come!By Tom McCluskey

Everyone remembers who was first but that doesn’t makethe journey of others any less significant. The trailblazersoften get all the glory but their destination is still a frontieruntil it is significantly populated. I am talking about NHRDSPs and their attainment of the NADSP-C credential.Where there were three now there are seven: BrookeMcNally from Jansen Road, Cammie Heiser from Millerton, and Tina Fagan from Stormville, Lynda Dipressi from GerryRoad, Sylvania Brown from Overlook, Jen Hall fromUnionvale, and Cathy Civile from Deer Run, have also earnedthe credential and are worthy of our recognition.

The crowning achievement in the credentialing process is thesuccessful review of your portfolio. The portfolio requires you to havemastery level of knowledge about the Community Support SkillsStandards, widely recognized as the gold standard of skill performancefor DSPs throughout the country, and the ability to take thatknowledge out of the classroom and apply it to increase both yourskills and the quality of life for the person you support. The portfoliois arduously scored by national experts as they critique the level ofyour knowledge. The waiting period between submission of theportfolio and hearing the results is tortuous.

Please congratulate Lynda, Sylvania, Jen and Cathy. Engage them inconversation about the process and how it makes them better at whatthey do. Pay close attention in the coming weeks as the number ofnationally certified DSPs here at NHR continues to grow. In the comingmonths NHR plans onlaunching a newinitiative to supportDSPs in earring thisimportant professionalcredential.

    Look for moreinformation to follow!
