Experience the Excitement… as the orchestra celebrates love, just in time for Valentine’s Day! We are taken on a musical journey into the story of two star-crossed lovers with the Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy. Tchaikovsky presents a variety of characters and moods with melodies offering effective musical contrast. Quiet, thoughtful bassoons, clarinets and strings depict Friar Laurence, the lovers’ ally, while dramatic timpani and percussion enter to reflect the warring Capulets and Montagues. The soaring love theme often heard in film and television carries the lovers to their deaths.
The story of love repressed, then helplessly and haplessly expressed and only fulfilled in death follows with Tristan und Isolde. The Prelude, which opens Wagner’s opera speaks of earthbound passion while the Liebestod which closes the opera reflects spiritual transfiguration where Isolde wills herself out of existence after Tristan has died in her arms. The use of dissonance to depict heightened longing by Wagner was considered startlingly new. Many see the work as laying the groundwork for the direction of 20th Century classical music.
Following intermission, we are treated to an elegant musical love letter. Inspired by a poem written for him by his fiancée, Elgar composed this charming piece of salon music which would become his first published work.
A comic story of love closes the evening with the Der Rosenkavalier Suite. The Suite is excerpted from the opera which is based on the fictional legends of libertine and seducer Don Juan set in the golden age of Viennese high society – complete with courtly intrigue, amorous entanglements and gender confusion. Probably arranged by conductor Arthur Rodzinski, the Suite offers the orchestra a wide range of musical possibilities culminating in an ecstatic climax and robust waltz.

Imagine… a sultry night in
Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s, where the early jetsetters and Hollywood stars of the day would congregate in elegant nightclubs for dining and dancing. Formals, furs and white dinner jackets were the dress code, steak dinners with bracing cocktails defined the dinner hour, and dancing until midnight was de rigueur. With those images in mind, Cabaret 2015, Bossa Nova Rio, is off to a rousing start! Guests will enjoy a myriad of Brazilian experiences, including an authentic bossa nova guitar performance by composer José Antonio Quesada. Other entertainment for Cabaret includes a floorshow with vocalists, and under the creative musical direction of Mason Waters, a night of dancing to wrap the evening. The three-course dinner has a decidedly South American flair with matched wines. Rum rickeys will be available for those who want a smooth, refreshing cocktail.
Experiences are very popular for silent auctions, and there will be new and exciting activities available for bid, including skydiving, shark fishing and kiteboarding, chef experiences, pampering and beauty treatments, an outstanding collection of wines, plus much, much more.
Cabaret 2015 Bossa Nova Rio! is January 24, at the Cloister Cabana, the “hottest spot south of Savannah.” The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception courtesy of the generosity of the Men’s Committee; dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. Individual tickets for the evening are $175. Men’s Committee memberships, patron packages and corporate sponsorships are still available. For more information or reservations, please call Beverly Trainor at 912-230-2028 or visit Symphony website at www.coastalsymphonyofgeorgia.org.
2014 was a fun and exciting year for The Symphony Society and 2015 promises to be even more so! Our Annual Christmas luncheon and meeting held at Ocean Forest has previously been a very well attended event. This year we set a new record with 110 Society members and guests attending. The Society presented a check to The Symphony Corporation for $40,000! This figure represents the funds raised from both The Golden Elephant and the special Recital given by Maestro Haza and Jackie Monroe in November at the lovely home of Jimmy and Joyce Williams. Following the delightful luncheon, our guests were entertained by the very talented Ann Nermoe.

Jorge Antonio Peña Portillo - Viola
The Coastal Symphony of Georgia’s General Manager, Jorge Peña, was raised in Honduras. “As a teenager, I had only seen the bass and the violin on TV. Initially I wanted to play the violin but so did everybody else in my class. After playing the bass for a week and the cello for another, the viola didn't seem that much different than a violin or as big as a bass so I took the viola instead, learned to play it and loved its sound ever since.” Following graduation from high school, Jorge moved to the United States where he received a Bachelor of Music degree from Columbus State University with full scholarship and Performance Diplomas in Viola Performance and Chamber Music from Johns Hopkins' Peabody Conservatory. While in college, Jorge began performing professionally as assistant principal viola with the Macon and Columbus Symphony Orchestras. Jorge counts as the highlight of his career the opportunities he has to interact and collaborate with great musicians that he admires including: Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Mstislav Rostropovich, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and many others.
Piotr Szewczyk - Violin
Growing up in a musical family, Piotr Szewczyk chose the violin “because no one else in my musical family played the violin.” Piotr first played with a group in his music school orchestra in Warsaw, Poland. He went on to earn a Bachelor and double Master in Violin and Composition from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Doctorate from Florida State University. One of Piotr’s greatest accomplishments was playing a solo recital in Carnegie Hall Weill Recital Hall in 2013, where he was able to perform some of his own compositions. In addition to music, Piotr is fascinated by science. He enjoys reading books and watching shows about the universe and nature in general and experiencing awe at the beauty and vastness of cosmos.
Todd Lockwood - Double Bass
Todd Lockwood was inspired by his older brother to choose the double bass. Growing up in Colorado, Todd began playing the instrument in the fourth grade, “because my older brother played and I wanted to be just like him.” Todd was selected for his first professional job in 2003, when he began performing as the acting assistant bass with the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra in Wyoming. In his spare time, Todd enjoys fly fishing.
