Spouse Coffee and Orientation

September 22nd SPONSORED BY

The spouse coffee and orientation in August included a group discussion about what community. We brainstormed the following ways we can build community Promoting community where we live by hosting neighborhood parties. Maintaining consistent communication and interaction with one another. Networking and understanding our talents, interests, and expertise. Volunteering or time to support local charities and efforts Supporting one another Celebrating together Getting to know host country together

CLO completely agrees with these ideas to create community. Our monthly community events hosted by EFMs and MOHs will contribute greatly to building a community. Get involved. Host an event. Join the discussion. Help serve our community and in turn gain from the community you’ve helped build.

Getting Around Jakarta www.familyguidetojakarta.com

Rainy seasons, special events or nothing in particular, can cause Jakarta to be gridlocked. If you have been living here for any amount of time, it will be something you are familiar withWe have a couple of suggestions to help you get around as easily as possible:

waze - a community-based traffic and navigation app. Join other drivers in your area who share real-time traffic and road info, saving everyone time and gas money on their daily commute.

petajakarta.org - an open source, community-led platform to collect and disseminate information about flooding and critical water infrastructure in Jakarta.

Bluebird Taxi app - if you regularly order taxis by phone and end up calling several times to see where your taxi is, download and use this app which gives you real-time updates on where your taxi is and how soon it will be coming.

Planning for sudden departure of post and Power of Attorney for

children

First floor conference room Chancery, 12:00 -1:00PM

We never want to be faced with the death of a loved one. But what if that loved one is the officer assigned to post Jakarta? What

if you are suddenly faced with this very difficult situation while overseas.

The best thing you can do is plan ahead and prepare your estate. The 4 crucial documents needed to prepare your estate are the

following:

Last Will and Testament: a written legal document that states how you'd like your property and assets distributed

after your death, whether it's to charity, family and friends, or even pets. It also allows you to designate an executor to ensure

your specifications are carried out and allows you to name guardian(s) for your minor children.

Living Will: Sometimes called a health care proxy, a living will ensures that your wishes regarding medical care are

followed in the event that you become terminally ill and need to be on a life support system. When you create a living will you

can also create a health care power of attorney, which allows you to designate a health care agent to carry out your wishes in your

living will.

Financial Power of Attorney: A financial power of attorney allows you to designate someone to manage the affairs

of your estate, including financial decisions, if you are unable to manage them yourself.

Living Trust: Many people set up what's called a living trust. One advantage of a living trust is that it enables your estate

to avoid probate court. This is a significant advantage because the probate process can last as long as three years and cost as

much as 10% of your estate's value. Avoiding probate court with a living trust also ensures your privacy because probate

documents are open to the public.

DON’T HESITATE, GET YOUR FLU VACCINE NOW! Available for all eligible AMER, EFM & FSN. UPDATE: The 2015-2016 Northern Hemisphere Flu vaccine contains the same virus strains as the 2015 Southern

Hemisphere vaccine. However, because immunity can decrease as early as 4-6 months after getting vaccinat-

ed, we recommend receiving the flu shot again, starting in November. So this means if you received a flu shot already in July or August of this year, we recommend you get a second flu shot in November. This is particularly important

if you plan to travel to countries in the Northern Hemisphere during their winter season. You can receive the flu vaccine at any of the following clinics: Annex: Walk-in appointments for vaccinations available Monday to Friday from 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-1600. In the Spotlight- Stephani Trisno, RN

Stephani has been working at the US Embassy Health Unit since September 2013. After completing her professional degree in the Philippines, Stephani worked in Bandung in emergency and medical/surgical care. She is originally from Bandung, and visits home frequently. While she is not working, Stephani enjoys playing piano and singing in her church choir. When asked what she enjoys most about working at the Health Unit, Stephanie said she has a keen interest in

vaccinations and enjoys seeing children and their family during their Annual Well Child visit. Stephani’s tip for staying healthy while on tour in Jakarta is to exercise regularly- do Zumba!

Classifieds Ibu Tati has a good working knowledge of English cooking and cleaning terms, but conversational English may be difficult for her. She is very sweet will be missed dearly. Ibu Tati prefers to work full-time in the Menteng or central region (ie. Pussat/Shangri-La) For more information please contact myself: [email protected] or you can call Ibu Tati directly at: 08999825838. (9/10)

Ibu Supia (part-time in Menteng!) With my transfer, one of the three coveted time-slots for Ibu Supiah is finally open! Ibu Supiah has been working in Menteng Eksekutif apartments for Embassy families well over a Decade now, providing excellent and efficient cleaning, washing, shopping, cooking, ironing and household management for three lucky families at a time. (Coming home to find your gas just ran out and your toilet broke – but Ibu already fixed both without bothering you - THAT is PRICELESS). I can’t vouch personally for the cooking because I loved doing all my own cooking (well – I actually CAN vouch for her amazing fried shallots), however she did my grocery shopping and (when I got lazy) my kitchen prep work too. The family before me just raved about her Western food though. DAO has been hoarding two of her time-slots (grumble-grumble “DoD gets all the love” grumble grumble), however my replacement is delayed until January, so his loss is your chance. She is now available for part time work on Monday and Thursday afternoons. If you want everything done right the first time – and DON’T want a bunch of off-the-wall requests for days off or “payday” loans (and you NEVER want to worry about leaving out your cash or valuables) then she is your first, best choice (unless someone else hires her before you do!!!) I have no reservation in recommending Supiah as the BEST pembantu for any family. For further information, contact her directly at 0817-482-7113, or talk to the other lucky DAO family, Chris and Amy Perez (DAO and POL in the Chancery) to hear first-hand just how much better your days in Jakarta will be with her on YOUR team. She has a set system for cleaning and doesn't like to sit idle. She is extremely professional, trustworthy, always on time, and is very efficient. She is also very respectful of our family’s privacy. She has undergone the Food Safety training through the Health Unit several times and is already knowledgeable on how to prepare fruits and vegetables safely. September is National Personal Preparedness Month

During National Preparedness Month, the Family Liaison Office’s (FLO) Crisis Management and Support Services team wants to know: Are you prepared for the unexpected? Every day there is a possibility of a sudden departure from an overseas post due to political unrest, terrorist threats, natural disaster, a death in the family, divorce, a family member in crisis, or a medical emergency. There are many ways to prepare for the unexpected and a good place to start is by reading FLO’s Personal Preparedness Plan online for tips on how to create your plan.

FLO also provides a helpful checklist for preparing a Go Bag and a 72 Hour Emergency Kit. You need to be prepared to grab your Go Bag quickly should you leave post on a short notice so keep it in a location that is easily accessible. Make sure your Go Bag meets airline specifications for size and weight and that it is

easy to handle, especially if you are traveling with small children. (Pack younger children’s necessities in your own bag and allow older children to have their own.) It might be impractical to have your Go Bag completely packed all the time as you may need to use some of the items on a daily basis. In this case, attach a checklist of important items, such as passports and important documents, phones and chargers, etc. that you can quickly pack when the time comes. Your 72 Hour Emergency Kit should include supplies you would need to survive for 3-4 days when you are asked to shelter-in-place such as non-perishable foods, water, medications, etc. The theme for the 2015 National Preparedness Month is Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make your Emergency Plan Today. Visit www.ready.gov/september for information, including tips for creating a family communication plan. Take 60 seconds to watch the Don’t Wait video and take action today! Visit FLO’s Crisis Management webpage for more information or email [email protected].

FSYF’s e-Newsletter for Parents Around the World, the Foreign Service Youth Foundation’s (FSYF) e-newsletter for parents is published quarterly and features articles with anecdotes and tips about settling in at post, dealing with evacuations, overseas education, and other topics that specifically involve the adjustment process for families and children in the Foreign Service. Check out the Summer 2015 issue on the FSYF website. FSYF welcomes guest contributors and would love to hear about FS Youth achievements that might inspire readers at other posts. If you would like to contribute, email [email protected] with 'Parent Newsletter Contributions' in the subject line. Please include: your name, topic, credentials (if applicable), and contact information.

English Vitamin: Tenses

The ______of money you make in a year depends on the ______ of deals you close. a) amount, number b) amount, amount c) number, amount d) number, number

The answer is a). Use ‘amount’ with uncountable nouns and ‘number’ with countable nouns. Ex: The amount of work I got through in July was double the amount that I did in June. No amount of love would heal the hatred she felt. There are a number of reasons why I can’t marry you. A number of people were injured in the explosion.
