As of the 50 th Anniversary Finale, contributions from 131 members had been received, for a total of $10,000. Thank you for your generosity! Just to keep you apprised, we are still dealing with Hurricane Irma impacts on JIAA, the Pot Shop and our home at Goodyear Cottage. Thanks to Craig Patterson, Facilities Manager, (who has done the yeoman’s work on the basement every single day) up until another 3.5” rainfall, the floor was dry. As I write this, the Pottery Guild Board posted notices that no one was allowed in the pot shop unless they were wearing a respi- rator, mold tests have been taken, and the analysis is pending. Meantime, the pot shop has been closed and the potters have been unable to work in the shop for more than a month! We are all on pins and needles, waiting for things to be cleaned and returned to some semblance of normal. Speaking of Craig and the pot shop damage, we ALL owe him an enormous debt of gratitude, too, for be- ing our spokesperson with SBA, FEMA and GEMA. He is navigating the minefield of regulations and we are learning a great deal about what to do, what not to do and in what order. Thanks, Craig! Unless you have missed the new event, Merry Shrimpmas will be held on Jekyll Island in concert with the Tree Lighting Ceremony. This event will take the place of Shrimp and Grits, which will still be a featured menu item of this new, one time only “mash up” event. There will be a smaller footprint to the event, but will include JIAA and Goodyear Cottage. Our Merry Artists Show and Sale will kick off that same weekend, complete with music and outside signage to draw people to Merry Artists. What better place to complete your holiday gift shopping than at Goodyear Cottage with such a wonderful array of talented artisans! See an article elsewhere in this newsletter and start get- ting your items ready to sell in this wonderful once-a- year saleabration! Once again following a major hurricane, it reminds me how truly fortunate we are to live on Jekyll, (also known as “Paradise”) where neighbors help neighbors, we have a vibrant arts community, we keep watch over each other, and we are beginning to welcome our winter members back to Jekyll. Thank you for being here and for supporting your Arts Association!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT…

Bonnie Householder

Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to our 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign. As of the 50th Anniversary Finale, contributions from 131 members had been received, for a total of $10,000.

As I write this, the Pottery Guild Board posted notices that no one was allowed in the pot shop unless they were wearing a respi-rator, mold tests have been taken, and the analysis is pending. Meantime, the pot shop has been closed and the potters have been unable to work in the shop for more than a month! We are all on pins and needles, waiting for things to be cleaned and returned to some semblance of normal.

Speaking of Craig and the pot shop damage, we ALL owe him an enormous debt of gratitude, too, for be-ing our spokesperson with SBA, FEMA and GEMA. He is navigating the minefield of regulations and we are learning a great deal about what to do, what not to do and in what order. Thanks, Craig!

Once again following a major hurricane, it reminds me how truly fortunate we are to live on Jekyll, (also known as “Paradise”) where neighbors help neighbors, we have a vibrant arts community, we keep watch over each other, and we are beginning to welcome our winter members back to Jekyll.

In the October newsletter I said that we were waiting for the floor to stop bubbling up, so we could move forward to getting the Pot Shop back up and running. We finally got the water cleaned up and within a couple of days we had 2” of rain and we started all over again with water bubbling up through the cracks. It took 6 days for the water table to go back down before the floor was once again dry, then three days later, on the 22nd, we had another 1” of rain and as of today 10/25, the floor is still bubbling. Two buckets forward and one buck-et back. The weather is supposed to be dry for the next week, so we once again should have a dry floor. We have had couple of different mold samples taken in the pot shop and we are waiting for all that information to come back to us so that we know what the air quality is before more work can be done. Three of the kilns are going through some initial testing and the fourth needs a couple of parts before it can be tested. Once all the ducks are in a row, a lot of work will need to be done before the shop returns to any type of normalcy... so be prepared to put on your work clothes and show up when the call goes out.

Regarding our claims, both are still in the works, one for Matthew and a new one for Irma. We have a small problem with the Matthew claim as we never applied for an SBA loan and that is a requirement for the FEMA grant, we are currently in communication with SBA to see if we can still apply for a loan due to Mat-thew. The claim for damages caused by Irma is currently being evaluated by SBA, but as you can imagine the staffs for both SBA and FEMA are stretched very thin due to 4 major hurricanes that hit the southeast this year causing widespread damage. Breath normally... we will get through this.

The driveway paving project will probably be delayed a bit because JIA is planning to run pipes from our downspouts out into the yard and they must do that before the paving can begin.

Help Wanted – We are currently looking for a dedicated person to take on the role of Webmaster for our website, basically this is just for the pages outside of the ‘Members Only’ Area. The job takes some dedication but not a great amount of com-puter knowledge. There is no computer language needed, the pages are maintained by simply inserting pictures or adding text as needed...the elves in the background do all the computer code required to make it all work. So, don’t be shy, step up and you can tell your friends you are a Webmaster (we won’t tell them how easy it is).
