Autumn is a time of year that can cause “grass issues” with horses due to the growth spurt in the grass, especially when this occurs following a drought. POKER’S STORY

This is one of those cases where there was a simple answer to a seemingly complex problem.

“Ten months ago my horse ‘Poker’ got extremely sick, swollen sheath, his legs, stomach, chest were so swollen and his skin was hanging. He was lumpy, scabby and all his hair had fallen out, he was so, so itchy he would run around the paddock after me in hope I would scratch him. He was absolutely miserable my poor boy, it broke my heart. I spent thousands of dollars on vet bills, skin tests, blood tests and on allergy tonics, changing covers, covering him from head to toe (I tried everything) trying to help him, he would get better for a few days and then it would come back worse. No-one including the vets had any idea what was wrong.

Less than 3 months ago a friend gave me the contact for Calm Healthy Horses and she wrote my horse a nutritional program. She has worked miracles for my boy. Every week I saw an improve-ment and now look at him, he is back to his old beautiful self again.

We have learned from experience over the years that it is a mistake to think that: Just because it is a terrible skin condition doesn’t mean it is necessarily

an ‘allergy’. Or to think that ‘allergies’ are only caused by external factors when what has hap-pened is a disturbance to the horse's me-tabolism.

When the condition is recognised for what it really is, it is relatively simple to address. The combination of a dedicated owner and appropriate diet adjustments was all it took in Poker’s case.

Ultimately minerals run every metabolic process in the body. When minerals are out of balance all sorts of metabolic pro-cesses are disturbed. When you keep the diet to things they DO need and leave out things they DON'T need you will be amazed at the issues that resolve all on their own.

The very simple principles that we always advocate are about providing nutrients to the horse within parameters that allow the horse to balance his own minerals. We are not trying to do it for them - so no forage analyses, computer programmes or mathematics involved.

This is not just about ‘topping up’ what is lacking. It is about looking at the total pic-ture and understanding what has gone wrong.

Poker was fed per day: A full scoop of Supreme vit & mins A full scoop of SOS A full scoop of ShipShape (amino acids) Also a full scoop (50-60g) of salt per day Flaxseed oil All mixed in just oaten chaff with a few carrots for taste.

We stipulated to not add anything else. He stayed out on long grass the whole time. Dayna would wash him once a week to remove the strange oil build up in his hair and scabs. We also recommended Aloe Vera Gel to be topically applied on

One or two of the following internal therapies should be given to help cleanse the digestive tract and can be used to help if infection is present –

Fenugreek seeds soaked in warm water overnight can be mixed into food, including the liquid.

Aloe vera juice is excellent for constipa-tion and as a general detoxifier. (Ensure it does not contain benzoic acid or other toxic preservatives)

Homeopathic remedies can be given to help with chronic problems.

Herbal extracts are also recommended internally, to help prevent or assist in-fected glands – We use a combination blend containing – Golden seal, Astrag-alus, red clover, dandelion & calendula.

External therapies help to relieve inflammation and can often assist in the discharge of blocked glands –

Hypercal tincture can be used if they become infected. – Add 10 drops to ¼ cup warm water and wipe around the area three times daily.

Before manually expressing glands it is recommended to apply a hot (not burn-ing) compress to the area to soften their contents. This can be made up using diluted herbal tinctures or teas from Calendula & hypericum or golden seal & red clover and applied with cotton balls.

Wipe the area clean after expressing contents and apply compress soaked in a solution of witch hazel extract, golden seal & calendula. This solution can be made up and kept in the fridge to cool, which provides further relief.

This solution may also be sprayed onto area if preferred to help relieve swell-ing and redness.

*Note – Manually expressing anal glands should be regarded as a tempo-rary measure, the aim should be to make the necessary lifestyle changes, so the glands will empty naturally as nature intended.

ANAL GLAND ISSUES

Anal Gland Problems in dogs can affect all ages and breeds leading to blocked or infected anal glands. These two small glands are located on either side of the anus, and are scent glands used for marking territory and recognition.

They would normally empty naturally when the dog has a bowel movement, but when stools are too thin or soft, then they may not express fully and can become impacted, which may lead to an infection if left untreated.

Blocked or impacted anal glands may be caused by – Constipation from lack of fibre or roughage in the diet.

Infrequent bowel movements, especial-ly common with inside dogs that hold on, rather than soiling indoors.

Inadequate exercise

Overweight and elderly pets

Natural treatment recommendations –

Increase exercise, and reduce weight, if overweight.

Feed natural diet, high in fibre from pulped or minced raw vegetables, soaked or sprouted grains with fresh meat & bones.

Flaxseed or Hempseed oil may also be added to the food daily to help lubri-cate the bowels.
