At a recent One-Day event conducted at Cheval Golf & Country Club in Tampa, player A hit his ball into a greenside bunker on his second stroke. Meanwhile, his fellow competitor player B who had hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker, played his second stroke from that bunker toward the green.

As a gesture of etiquette, player A went into the fairway bunker that player B had just played from and smoothed the sand.

Did the fact that player A’s ball lay in a greenside bunker when he smoothed the sand in a fairway bunker that player B had just played from result in a penalty under Rule 13-4a? Rule 13-4a states that a player must not test the condition of the hazard or any similar hazard when his ball lies in a hazard? Would you consider a greenside bunker to be similar to a fairway bunker? I think so.

However, Decision 13-4/0.7 addresses this very specific situation. It states that “when a player’s ball lies in a bunker, it is not a breach of the Rules if the player smooths the sand in another bunker, provided (a) the smoothing is for the purpose of tidying up the bunker, (b) the smoothing does not breach Rule 13-2 with respect to his next stroke and (c) there is not a reasonable possibility that the smoothing could affect a subsequent stroke by the player.”

As a result, no penalty was incurred.

Remember, use the index or the table of contents to find the correct Rule that applies to the situation and follow the Rules of Golf to help yourself enjoy the game of golf.

Kara Beth Yancy was born and raised in Ocala, Florida and joined the FSGA in 2011. Despite her strong Gator upbringing, she attended FSU, and obtained a degree in Communications. Kara was raised in an extended family of golfers and has played the game since she was six. During her time in Tallahassee, Kara Beth was heavily involved in Seminole Student Boosters and served two years as the Director of Athletic Events. She enjoys traveling, sports, and spending time with her family and friends. When not working tournaments on the weekends, she is always in Tallahassee for game day.

Meghan Martinek joined the FSGA in 2011. She was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, where she began her golf career at an early age. Competing nationally throughout high school gave her the opportunity to pursue golf at the collegiate level. She obtained a Marketing degree at Boston College, where she was also a member and captain of the Women's Golf team. Aside from golf, Meghan loves cooking, sports, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. She will miss the Eagles football season, but not the Boston weather.

Tracy Dachisen joined the FSGA staff in 2011. She was born and raised in the Garden State, New Jersey. She spent a small part of her childhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the small town of Easton. This is where she picked up her first golf club at the age of 6. Tracy played competitive golf from the ages of 12 to 24 and was fortunate to have the opportunity to play in many AJGA, collegiate and national events. Tracy attended the University of South Florida where she played on the Wom-en’s Golf Team for four years. GO BULLS! In 1996, she was reunited with a former New Jersey junior golfer, Peter Dachisen, to which she has been married since 1999. They are blessed with a young son, Peter, who makes the Energizer Bunny look like a slacker. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and paper crafting.
