LYRICSOoh, Devon, won't go to heaven

She's just another lost soul about to be mine again

Leave her, we will receive her

It is beyond your control, will you ever meet again

Devon, no longer living

Who had been rendered unwhole as a little child

She was taken and then forsaken

You will remember it all, let it blow your mind again

Devon lies beyond this portal

Take the word of one immortal

Chorus:

Give your soul to me for eternity

Release your life to begin another time with her

End your grief with me, there's another way

Release your life, take your place inside the fire with

her

Sever, now and forever

You're just another lost soul about to be mine again

See her, you'll never free her

You must surrender it all and give life to me again

Fire, all you desire

As she begins to turn cold and run out of time

You will shiver till you deliver

You will remember it all, let it blow your mind again

Devon lies beyond this portal

Take the word of one immortal

(Chorus) X2

Ooh, Devon, no longer living

Who had been rendered unwhole as a little child

She was taken and then forsaken

You will remember it all, let it blow your mind again

LYRICS INFORMING NARRATIVE

The lyrics does support the

narrative of the music

The music video is entirely

about how Devon committed

suicide and why she did, it

also talks about what

happened to her afterwards.

But the main theme in the

music video is the persuasion

for Devon to take her life.

“Devon, Won’t go to heaven” This is

supported in the narrative as she

committed suicide. In the Bible, it states

that people do not go to heaven if they kill

themselves. The narrative supports this

because instead of Devon to progress,

she is covered in blood and looks tortured,

likely to have occurred in her time in hell.

LYRICS INFORMING NARRATIVE

The song has been written in such a way that is

persuading David’s character to kill himself to

be reunited with Devon. This can be taken to be

generalised, asking for more people to take

their own lives along with Devon.

The entire chorus has been written in this way.

When David is singing, he is playing himself and

not his character, so this can mean that David is

instructing his character to take his life with Devon.

This is why David is seen covered in blood and his

character is not. David is saying that is his

character wants to see Devon again, he would have

to do what she did too. The video supports this

what he places a gun against his head.

“Give your soul to me for eternity, Release your life

to begin another time with her. End your grief with

me, there’s no other way. Release you life, take

your place inside the fire with her”

CONTROVERSY

The song meaning it self if very controversial. Most people accept the

song but the topic of suicide is controversial on it’s own.

There have been numerous debates about whether suicide should be

accepted or not. One side of the argument states that a person has the

right to do what ever they please with their body and the other side says

that all life is precious and killing anything including yourself is wrong.

The video also depicts two acts

of potential lethal behaviour.

One is the female’s hanging,

and the other is David’s

character having a gun in his

mouth.

The lyrics are also controversialas it seems like the singer wantsto encourage suicide. Of coursethis isn’t the case, it can beinterpreted that way. The line“Take your life with me”

FRAGMENTED PRESENTATION OF THE BODY

In the music video, the female is presented in sections rather than as a

whole. Maybe this means that she is worth less as a whole being. Or

perhaps this was done to highlight the features used to identify a corpse.

Blue skin, dead eyes and broken lips. These parts are focused on as

decomposition is more prominent at these parts after death. Makes the

audience focus on these feature. It helps the audience better understand

her condition

BEHAVIOUR

The music video is very dramatic. It’s an exciting, emotional, or

unexpected event.

Usually white artist centre their videos around drama, they talk about the

true nature of what I’s like to be human. They centre around hardships

people face in specific scenarios or in general. The video is very

dramatic as the audience is shown how the character deals with the fact

that someone he knows has just committed suicide. We get to see his

actions and eventually him attempting to take his own life.

The music video is purely about suicide. So much so that the beginning

and end of the video are messages with contact information to the

suicide hotline.

CROSS CUTTING

Cross cutting happens throughout the music video,

just like any other music video. The scenes will go

from shots of the band performing to the narrative and

vice versa.

The different scenes when isolated makes no sense,

only when edited together in the video does it actually

make sense. The footage only works when as a whole

rather than in individual scenes. A common practice in

modern music videos
