Teagan a World Skills Champ Teagan Rodda (Year 11) competed in the North Coast
TAFE Hair Dressing World Skills Competition at
Wollongbar TAFE during term 4, 2015. Teagan took first
place. Students of all North Coast TAFE colleges
participated. In the competition a range of skills need to
be demonstrated. Customer service on arrival, hair
wash, short hair styling, long hair styling and the
designing of these styles. The competition required the
skills to be demonstrated across a working day. Teagan
felt she placed well due to the complexity of the hair
styling she created. “We had to have a braid and a ‘fish
tail’ (similar to a braid) and two twists plus your own creative stylings. Mine
was an 80s style with a puff in the front that led to a bun with twirls.” Teagan
“I hadn’t thought about becoming a hair dresser before. Being successful in
hair dressing gives me another option in life after school. As an outcome of
her placing Teagan will represent North Coast TAFE at the National
Championships which will be held in Melbourne in October. Mallorie Banks
(Year 11) and Eden Hambly (Year 11) took second and third places
respectively: Evans River students taking all three top places. Well done
Teagan, Mallorie and Eden!
Italy Here We Come! There’s a group of very excited Year 9 and 10 students at
school at the moment. They depart Australia on the evening of
Saturday 2 April for almost three weeks of learning in Italy. For
the first two weeks they will be hosted by students they hosted
here in Australia last September. They will go to school, visit
major sites and live life in an Italian family and as an Italian
teenager. For these two weeks they will be based in Padova, Northern Italy.
Some of the sites they will visit include Palazzo della Ragione, Padova
Botanic Gardens, St Anthony’s Basilica, St Guistina Church, the City of
Venice, the islands in the lagoon of Venice. The City of Verona, the Church
of the Eremitani, Cappa degli Scrovegni, and Padua Clock Tower. They will
go ice skating at Stadio Plebiscito, participate in Italian cuisine cooking at
school, participate in a Circus Arts class, complete a walking tour of the
Padua Piazzes and visit the Bo’ amongst a range of activities. They will then
travel by train to Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Orvieto and Rome during the final few
days, stopping in each destination for site seeing and overnight stays. In
Florence they will participate in a full day tour including seeing Cathedral of
Santa Maria Del Fiore, Galeria dell’Academia, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo &
Campanile, and the Boboli Gardens. In Pisa they will visit the Leaning Tower
and the Baptistry. In Lucca they will complete a bike ride which takes in

some amazing views and see the key sites of Lucca. They will complete a
full day tour of Orvieto including visits to Cathedral di Orvieto, Museo
Archaelogico Nazionale and a tour of the Medieval city. When in Rome they
will visit The Coliseum, The Forum, Arch of Titus and the Holy Road,
Capitoline Museum, The Pantheon, Trastevere (restaurant for dinner), St
Peter’s Square, San Petro, Trevi Fountain and Via Venuto – the Spanish
Steps. The group return to Australia on Friday 22 April. They will be
accompanied by Mr Robertson and Mrs Entwistle. We wish them well on their
travels.
This September we will be hosting another group of students from our partner
school in Italy, Pietro Scalcerle. We are currently taking names of students in
Year 8 and 9 who are willing to host these students. It is anticipated these
hosting students will travel to Italy in April 2017. Students interested in
hosting (and potentially travelling) should see Mr Delman or Mrs Entwistle at
school. Rob Walker – Principal

Wellbeing Builder: Memory Coding/Reviewing Notes
Wellbeing Element:
Skills and Achievement Character Strength: Curiosity Wellbeing Fitness Challenges:
Years 7-9 – You Matter Years 10-12 – Move More
While taking accurate and thorough notes is an
essential in quality learning, reviewing them regularly will build strong brain pathways to
embed them in students’ long term memories. Doing this is often called memory coding. The
Learning Curve program provides a variety of effective memory coding strategies
Facts relating to how much the brain retains:
should notes not be reviewed within 24 hours, 60% to 80% of the learnt material
is forgotten by the brain.
after a month with no reviews, only 3% to 4% is remembered
the brain pathways which were created wither and die
when 50 minutes of learning is not reviewed regularly, it takes 30 to 40 minutes to relearn it
why learn it in the first place?
As renowned Polish pianist, Ignace Paderewski, once said, “If I miss one day’s practice, I notice it. If I miss two day’s practice, the critics notice. If I
miss three days practice, the audience notices it.” When students regularly train for sport and practise their musical instruments their brain pathways are becoming freeways and messages travel faster and faster; thus their skills and capabilities develop.
Using the colourful interactive Thinking Tools organises learnt material visibly in students’ brains.
“I’m a great believer in luck; I find the harder I work the more of it I have.” Woodrow Wilson
make smart and informed decisions.
• Develop greater self-esteem and the confidence
within themselves to take action.
• Discover how to manage their money wisely for
long term growth.
• Take responsibility for their life and break
through any barriers that may be holding them
back from success.
• Help them to develop clearly defined goals and a
detailed plan for their achievement.

Mrs Fields and our K-6 STEM group need your help! We would love for parents/carers to keep their recycled items, including tissue boxes, milk and water bottle lids.
Please place these in the designated STEM recycle bin from next Monday. These items will be put to good use for our STEM students. Any questions please see myself
or Mrs Fields. Many thanks.
Many thanks to all parents and carers who attended the Year 8-12 Parent/Teacher Interview night. It was a great
opportunity for Evans River parents and carers to chat with class teachers and Year Advisers. This year we had a wonderful display of
student works, including Year 8 Art landscape drawings and cushion covers along with 3D printing projects from senior students. We look forward to seeing our Evans River families at the next Parent/Teacher night.
A big thank you to Shantelle Searle for donating watering cans and gardening gloves to the school. Evans River
students shall make good use of these items when they are taking care of our community vegetable garden. A courtesy reminder that any parent/carer is welcome to come and help nurture our little garden, we would be very grateful for any assistance.
Look at our budding scientists! I was lucky enough to catch both our Kindergarten and Year 7 students working in the Science rooms this week. Our Kindergarten class were looking at specimens on slides under microscopes, whilst our Year 7 students undertook an experiment with the bunsen burners. It is wonderful that our secondary teachers take the time to nurture and bu ild
the confidence in our little ones, I feel it truly helps students transition from primary to secondary. Another reason why ou r K-12 community school is so amazing!
The school web page now has a direct link to our Facebook page.
I am organising a fantastic fundraiser with Billy G’s Cookie Dough. Order forms will be coming home soon….the cookies are cost
effective, great for a treat and look DELICIOUS!
Donations of books/ CD’s needed for our Federal Election fundraiser! Many thanks.
