DZ is Die Zeitung, the newsletter of
the Connecticut Valley Chapter of
the BMW Car Club of America.

One of the most common criticisms voiced by members of the BMW CCA is the
lack of events for members, aside from active driving events. The CT Valley Chapter
Board of Directors is always looking for new and interesting ideas for events to
increase camaraderie amongst the club. If you have any ideas for an event that the
club could sponsor in some way, feel free to reach out to any of the board members.
These events can range from go-karting, skiing, ice skating, brewery tours, bowling,
or even just an informal get together at a local restaurant/pub. Contact information
can be found on the CT Valley Chapter website @ http://www.ctvalley.org/contact/

USE OF IMAGES STATEMENTChapter events may be photographed or recorded and subsequent images published in the Chapter newsletter or other BMW CCA publications. Attendance at Chapter events constitutes permission by all participants for public release of images from the event.
PRESIDENT’S COLUMNAnother year has past and by most accounts it was a successful one. This is primarily due to the efforts of the many volunteers who put their time into organizing and running our Chapter. Of note: This issue of the ///DZ does not include a ballot for the upcoming Chapter Board of Directors Election, as it was previously sent out under separate cover.
In the past, BMW CCA required us to publish a newsletter for our Chapter members every 90 days. Due to the recent changes enacted by the CCA, the requirement for mailing out the newsletter has been eliminated. So, for those of you who have, up to now, received a hard copy issue in the mail – you are hereby notified that this issue will be the last one we are mailing out.
In order for you to receive any future issues of this newsletter we will need a viable email address for you. While the CVC Board of Directors still wants to produce a Chapter newsletter for our members, a recent reduction in the amount our Chapter receives from each member’s annual dues (which is how we have paid for this newsletter in the past) has required the Board to re-evaluate our operations. Thus, going to an electronic-only publication is the most efficient way for us to continue to provide this member benefit.

of the room! There was even a fully
restored 2002 body that was nearing
preparation for its final paint. It looked
as though it could have been on the
assembly line in Munich, such was the
level of detail put into its restoration!
Mike and Pat set the stage with
discussions about car lovers’
motivations to invest their emotions
and bank accounts into the restoration
process. This includes deciding upon
the appropriate level of restoration
to undertake – from reliable daily
driver to 100-point Concours-level
quality. Jason performed real-time
evaluations on two cars owned
by CVC members – a 1976 3.0Si
belonging to new Club members
Paula Ribeiro and Iain Spry and a
2002, also from 1976, owned by long-
time Club member Steve Lubarsky
(who was attending his first event!).
Jason walked us through the initial
assessment process, pointing out the
areas needing attention on each car.
Then he held an open discussion with
the brave owners about their desired
THE PADDOCK CLASSIC CAR RESTORATIONSbusiness aspects of the automotive
restoration process. The showroom
at The Paddock is filled with an
eclectic collection of vehicles, from
a one-off hot rod to a mid-60s
Rambler, along with exotics, sports
cars, and much more. Every one of
the cars there was a conversation
piece…ideal backdrops as we enjoyed
some coffee and pastries and tried to
impress each other about how much
we did (and didn’t!) know about them.
Then it was on to the spacious
shop to see the even larger variety
of works-in-progress, from relatively
minor spruce-ups to full body-off
restorations. The scope of projects
literally ran the gamut from a 3.0 CSi,
undergoing extensive bodywork in
one corner, to a 1940s era Connecticut
State Police car at the other end

members and friends got
together at The Paddock Classic Car
Restorations on Saturday, October
26th. Rather than chancing the
weather and holding a picnic, this year
our autumn event was held indoors at
The Paddock’s spacious showroom
and shop in downtown New Britain. As
it turned out, it was a perfect autumn
day, so attendees enjoyed their drives
through the peak fall foliage, coming
from all over the state as well as from
New York and Massachusetts.
The folks at The Paddock, President
Mike Donnelly and his wife Pat,
Operations Manager Jason Hoyt,
Head Mechanic Michael “Mac”

were all gracious hosts. They gave us

level of restoration, providing candid
estimates of what each project could
be expected to cost. Jason then went
on to demonstrate how replacement
body parts are fabricated on-site.
Starting with a piece of sheet steel,
he used a hammer and bean bag, an
English Wheel, a shrinker / stretcher,
bead roller, and his own knee, to form a
replica of the trailing edge of a 3.0 CSi
rear fender. You know, just showing
off! Mac and Guy got involved too,
speaking with folks interested in their
specialties.
To a person, the attendees
expressed their enthusiasm for this
event and venue. Don’t feel too bad if
you missed it, the folks at The Paddock
enjoyed having us as much as we did
being there, so they look forward to
having us back! Pay attention to our
emails and website so you won’t miss
the next one. You might just see some
of our fellow members’ cars there –
not just in the parking lot, but in the
shop too!

THE MORINS: FRIENDS OF THE CCAs a longtime member of the
Connecticut Valley Chapter I am
pleased to inform our membership
that Bob and Shelia Morin were
recipients of the BMW CCA Friend of
the Club Award, given for outstanding
service to the BMW CCA. They were
both surprised when they were
presented with the award at the last
O’fest.
Their service to our chapter goes
back to at least 1986, when Bob was
elected as a Member-at-Large on the
Chapter’s Board of Directors. Shelia
started her service with our Board
as Secretary in 1988. But that wasn’t
By WILLY WILEY
A the limit of their participation. They
both went on to serve as chapter
President with Shelia having served 2
terms. Bob, not to be outdone, went
on to serve as President for 12 years.
In addition to being Chapter
Officers they have also served on
multiple O’fest committees that
either our chapter put on, or co-
hosted with other nearby chapters.
They have also become Ambassadors
for the BMW CCA Foundation. They
have continually supported the
Chapter’s HPDE events and Street
Survival program. Thank you Bob and
Shelia!

2019 STREET SURVIVAL - IN THE REARVIEWhe CT Valley Chapter has had a
long history of supporting the
Tire Rack Street Survival program,
and 2019 was another successful
year, as we held 2 more sold-out
schools in June and September. I
would like to give some perspective
and discuss the support that we
receive. Street Survival was started
by the BMW CCA Foundation as
part of their objective of providing
educational programs to encourage
safer driving, specifically aimed at
teenagers. The Everglades Chapter
hosted the first school, back in 2002.
Bob and Sheila Morin heard about the
program through the Foundation, and
asked one of the people involved to
speak at our Chapter’s Annual Dinner.
This speech generated a great deal of
interest from chapter members about
sponsoring a school in Connecticut.
Planning started, and our Chapter’s
first school was held in spring 2007
By DAVE ORTOLI
T at the Hartford Insurance Group
headquarters property. In the years
after, we held schools at such sites
as Rentschler Field and the Rock
Cats stadium in New Britain. It was
2011 that marked two milestones in
the CVC’s program. We held a school
arranged by the National office at the
Consumer Reports Auto Test facility
in Colchester, and we also expanded
our offerings, adding a second
school session per year, due to the
high student registration response.
Starting in 2013, we had the good
fortune to obtain Consumer Reports’
full support of the program, and it
has resided there ever since, as they
see that the benefits of a program
for developing safer drivers meshes
well with their own organization’s
objectives.
Our Street Survival schools have
been very successful, generally selling
out, or coming close to a sell out,
every time. We are seeing many cases
of the second or third child in a family,
or cousins or friends now attending,
because of the value the parents
saw in the program for their children
during previous sessions. There have
been many factors that contribute to
the success of our program, which
I would like to highlight. The first
factor is the tremendous support
and enthusiasm from the our Chapter
members, who volunteer their time
to prepare for, and facilitate, the
schools, to ensure the students have
the best possible experience. There
is a growing volunteer group, some
of who have been involved for many
years, who do whatever is necessary
to make sure each school is the best
that we can manage.
These schools would not be as
polished, and as smoothly run for
the students and parents, without
the equally enthusiastic and strong
11
support from the Consumer Reports
organization. Their facility is a key
ingredient in having an outstanding
day for the students, and their people
make every effort possible to ensure
success. We can’t thank them enough
for their continued partnership!
There are two other groups who
have provided continuous support
over the years too. We’d like to
thank the Traffic Services Unit of the
Connecticut State Police for having
been to almost every school, some
even on a volunteer basis, to provide
a demonstration of proper seat belt
usage. Just as important, they provide
a strong, positive interaction with the
students, with these schools most
likely being the first encounter a
student has had with a State Trooper.
The American Trucking Foundation,
thru their Outreach program, make
available a professional commercial
truck driver and semi-rig to show the
students (and parents) how to safely
co-exist with large trucks on the
highway. Tony Spero, who has over 3
million accident-free miles of driving
experience, has been to almost
every school we have run. By letting
the students and parent sit in the
driver’s seat of his tractor-trailer, they
are able to experience what he sees
every day. Parents often express the
most surprise when experiencing the
various blind spots and the difficulty
of seeing other surrounding vehicles
from the truck’s limited side-views.
Over the past 13 years, our
Chapter has now taught 631 students,
via 21 school sessions, the aspects
of safer driving, something we will
continue to do. I am so lucky to
have all of the pillars of support, as
described above, which are needed
to hold the successful programs we
do. If you want to help put smiles
on teens’ faces, while making them
better drivers, let us know you want to
volunteer. There is a warning though…
doing so is contagious, and most
people who volunteer keep coming
back! Also, if you know any teens or
teens’ parents, encourage them to
sign up for our schools by going to
www.streetsurvival.org.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: HOW THREE BMWS STAYED (MOSTLY) IN THE CVC FAMILY
n Munich, during the autumn
of 1999, Tom Klee and his wife
took delivery of a 2000 Titanium
Silver 328Ci, with the five-speed
manual transmission. This event
was the subject of the cover of the
Die Zeitung newsletter in January
2000. The coupés of 2000 were
the first E46s with two doors. After
touring Germany, Austria, and the
Czech Republic, he and the coupé
enjoyed seven years and 77,000 miles
By ALAN COYKENDALL & TOM KLEE
I together back in Connecticut. Tom
and his wife then returned to Munich
to pick up a 2007 Space Grey 335i,
with the first of BMW's modern turbo
charged engines.
By that time, Alan Coykendall had
started driving his 2004 325i five-
speed sedan at High Performance
Driver Education (“HPDE”) events at
Lime Rock Park. Alan and Tom had
met at Street Survival, HPDE, and
other CVC events, and when Alan
mentioned that he was contemplating
the purchase of a car more dedicated
to the track, Tom remarked that he still
owned his 2000 328Ci and that it was
for sale. Tom’s 2000 coupé was “like
new” and Alan thought it was too nice
for the track, but too desirable not to
buy. He bought it and enjoyed it on
both the track and the highway, along
the way learning that BMWs quite
enjoy some track time.
13
Seven years later, Tom and his
wife, this time with a grandson along
for the trip, traveled to Munich to
acquire a 2014 Mineral Grey 435i with
Coral Red interior plus the M-Sport
package, bigger brakes, and other
handling-enhancing options, which
were supplemented by a Dinan
Stage 2 Performance Package. This
energetic coupé served Tom well,
both on road and on track. Tom and
the 435i moved to Florida in 2017
where Tom became active in the
Florida Sun Coast Chapter. Although
his handsome coupé had won a
people's choice award at a car show,
Tom was now smitten by the new 8
Series.
Back in Connecticut, Alan’s 328Ci
still looked great and ran well, as its
20th birthday approached – but he
wanted a bit more speed and torque
for the track. Meanwhile in September
2019, Tom had ordered a Barcelona
Blue 840i M-Sport coupé with Fiona
Red interior and anxiously watched its
progress through the online build and
shipping tracker. After many e-mails
and phone calls, he and Alan agreed
that Tom would take delivery of his car
at the BMW Performance Center in
Greer, South Carolina, and Alan would
fly to Florida to drive with Tom in the
435i to Greer, where Alan would then
buy the 435i. When the Performance
Center gave Tom the date for taking
delivery of his new 840i, the two were
ready to go!
One of the great perks with
Performance Center Deliveries is that
BMW provides a hotel room with the
prior night’s dinner and delivery day
breakfast for the buyer and one guest,
as well as track time and delivery of
the new car.
With these plans in place, a loving
home for the faithful 2000 328Ci
had to be found. Alan placed ads in
Roundel and the Hartford Courant.
About three days later, the phone
rang with a familiar caller ID. Mike
Menatian, the CVC’s Chief Driving
Instructor, was interested. Mike came,
examined, drove, and liked the young-
looking coupé. He bought it that day,
and this classic E46 could not have
found a better home in the CVC family.
The week before Thanksgiving,
Alan flew to Tom's home in Fort Myers,
Florida, and the next day he and Tom
motored north on the interstate, in
fine weather, with reasonable traffic,
and generous speed limits. After
spending a night near Atlanta, the two
sat for a while and did the financial
paperwork to transfer ownership of
the 435i (built May 2014; 39,933 miles)
to Alan, before starting the short trip
to the South Carolina DMV office in
the small town of Greer. Here the folks
were as friendly and efficient as their
web site and phone calls predicted,
and in a few minutes Alan had a transit
plate for the trip to Connecticut
for just twenty bucks. Greer is the
home of the BMW Performance
Center and huge, modern factory,
sanwiched between the larger towns
of Greenville and Spartanburg.
Afterwards we had a nice German
lunch in Spartanburg (though none
of the staff spoke German), and then
drove to the hotel in Greenville. There
in the parking lot we encountered
three affable BMW technical experts
who answered lots of questions
about both the 435i and Tom’s (as yet
unseen) 840i.
The next morning, after a great
breakfast buffet, BMW took everyone
by bus, who was getting a car, to the
Performance Center. Alan’s now-
new-to-him 435i followed the bus
for about five miles on twisty roads.
Never was there a bus or driver that
handled curves as well as that one! It
was a good warm-up for what was to
come.
First, a quick classroom session
from a professional sports car racer
on how to drive better, familiar to
all who’ve been to HPDE or Street
Survival events. Then to the track,
where each buyer-guest pair was
placed in a car that was the same or
as similar as possible to the one the
buyer would soon take ownership
of. Tom and Alan got the keys to
a fire-breathing M850i with 523
horsepower and 553 pound-feet of
torque!
The slalom was first. Alan hit a
few cones, but was overall pretty
good. Then onto the anti-lock braking
simulation; no problem for those who
exercise them on quiet snowy streets,
but on dry pavement we really had to
crush the pedal and turn left while the
instructor watched, from trackside, to
see if our eyes turned left. Then the
coach took us for hot laps on the track
and around the wet skid pad that
were as thrilling as anything at Disney
World, all while revealing the prowess
of the Stability Control System.
Finally, after a plentiful buffet lunch
courtesy of BMW, the owner and
guest are ushered into a private space
where their new BMW awaits, while a
personal advisor spends whatever
time is necessary to familiarize the
owner with all the complexities of a
modern BMW. A lot of photography
is done here! After an hour of expert
advice on the 840i, Tom drove his
stunning new coupé to the parking
area and ceremoniously passed the
435i’s key fob to Alan.
After two days of fair weather
highway driving and two days
as guests of BMW, including a
memorable day at the Performance
Center, Tom headed out to tour the
factory and the BMW museum at The
Zentrum, followed by a wonderful
German dinner in Spartanburg. The
next day, he visited the “PASSION: 50
Years of BMW Cars and Community”
exhibit at the BMW CCA Foundation
before heading back home to Florida.
As Tom left for the factory tour, Alan
departed for Charlotte, North Carolina
to pick up his wife who flew down to
help drive the rest of the way back
to Connecticut. Like the entire week,
this too worked well and they were
home by the evening of the following
day, having encountered no traffic
jams…until Connecticut.
So now, Tom’s Barcelona Blue
coupé starts its life in Florida with at
least some emotional ties to the CVC,
and two of his previous BMW coupés
remain in the embrace of our CVC
family.

To all members of the CT Valley Chapter,
I am writing to you on behalf of the BMW CCA CT Valley Chapter. This is intended for members who have elected to receive a hard copy of the ///DZ newsletter. Due to increasing publishing costs, we have decided to go to an electronic newsletter and forego the original printed copy that has been mailed to you in the past. In 2015, we spent $23,969 on the published newsletter for 6 issues, and in 2016, we spent $14,776 for 4 issues. Unfortunately, our advertising revenue doesn't even come close to covering the cost of the newsletter. Instead, we would like to put that money towards more events for our club members to enjoy.
The DZ you are currently receiving is, and will continue to be, available on our website in high definition color print for your viewing pleasure. Each quarter, we send out an email blast to our members with a link to the newsletter.
