Thank you for giving me the opportunity, to be the first interim President, as we restruc-
ture our CHW Calgary governance. When we all work together, it lightens the load for
everyone in the organization. I had the pleasure of attending the “Senior Connection Tea”
on May 28, where Irene Ross was recognized, for her years devoted to the Senior Connec-
tion. Our capable members, baked, phoned, greeted our seniors at the door and served.
The afternoon was delightful. Our Annual Campaign was a success this year, thanks again,
to Jackie Halpern and our volunteers. If your pledge is outstanding, or if you have not
been contacted by a canvasser, please call Cathy at the office with your payment information. The Shem
Tov awards were held June 25, and the CHW recipient, I’m proud to say was Betty Sherwood. Yasher
Koach, Betty. The coming year will be a busy one, beginning with the casino, August 19 and 20. Once
again, we are fortunate to have Betty Sherwood and her husband, Jim Casquenette, taking charge. I
hope you can join us for a Walk in the Park on August 24 in solidarity to support our Daycares. Our Annual
Card Party will take place on October 22 at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. The Tikvah Chapter
has undertaken this event, and it promises to be a wonderful afternoon. Save the date. I look forward to
working with you during my time in this position, and long after.

Membership Update - from Gail Ksienski
The office will begin accepting membership dues and renewals in August for the 2014- 2015
year. To save invoice mailing costs, please consider sending your fee in now. As in previous
years Life Members pay an annual administration fee of $10 and Annual Members pay a fee
of $36 (a portion of which is tax receipted). As always, we offer a Life Membership for $300
(tax receipted) which is a wonderful gift for wives, mothers, daughters and sisters
alike! Cash, cheque , Amex, Visa and MasterCard are accepted. This fee helps pay for Office
mailing, Bulletins and local programming.
The National Membership Committee challenged all Centres to tell them our CHW story by creating a short
video that completes the phrase “Why we love CHW…” We asked Genya Knopov to tell her story and submit-
ted this video. It is now up to Calgary members to go on line and view the videos. The videos are on CHW’s
YouTube channel. The video with the most likes by September 30th will be deemed the winner, and will be
screened at the upcoming CHW AGM. I encourage you to take a few minutes to view and vote.
I hope to see you at one of our Fall events.

This is Calgary Centre’s first “Walk in the Park” fund-
raiser for Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) projects in
support of Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel.
On Sunday, August 24th, CHW members and friends
will walk 5km on a scenic walk along the Glenmore Res-

support of our fundraising efforts to help the countless
men, women and children who depend on CHW pro-
jects each and every day.
Please sign up to be a participant or sponsor one of the
participants in the CHW Calgary Centre Walk in the
Park by going online to www.chw.ca/calgary

Greetings from Jackie Halpern, 2014 Annual Campaign Chair
Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers!
CHW Calgary’s 2014 Annual Campaign has been very
successful. Your gifts continue to assist us in providing
care and opportunities for countless children, women and
men through CHW’s projects and programs in Israel.
For those of you who have not been contacted, please call the office at 403-253-
4612 to arrange your donation. Your gifts are invaluable to the continuation of our work in Israel.
It takes many volunteers to make a campaign successful - it is due to their efforts that we are able to con-
tinue funding our programs. We would like to thank the following people who have devoted so much
time and energy to this year’s campaign!
Doreen Abugov, Carol Allan, Linda Barron, Lauren Bell, Claire Berman, Lil Faider, Carol Feldman, Lily
Fixler, Naomi Hashman, Lily Joffe, Evgenya Knopov, Gail Ksienski, Leslie Levant, Mort Levitt, Toto Levitt,
Sally Lipkind, Sandy Martin, Elissa Meadow, Gail Melanson, Sheila Riesenberg, Sarah Rosenfeld, Leah
Saltman, Sharon Sattin, Evelyn Sheftel Shapiro, Betty Sherwood, Sondra Spier, Beth Steinberg, Ruth
Ullman.
I hope I have not left anyone out, and if I have, my sincere apologies. Our volunteers are the foundation
of this organization, and I sincerely appreciate all of the time taken by each of you in making this cam-
paign the success that it is.
Again Todah Rabah to everyone who has so generously made a gift to our Annual Campaign.

Thank you for your contribution to the Annual Campaign!
CHW held its National Advisory Board (NAB) meetings in Montreal on April 5 and 6.
The NAB opened with a report by Alice Anidjar-Slabotsky, CHW Mini Mission Participant, about her experience
visiting CHW projects. Not only was it her first trip to Israel but her first public speaking engagement. The entire
NAB and BOD were charmed by her presentation and gained insight as she described what personally resonated
with her about each venue and why she came away endorsing CHW and our ongoing commitments to our
schools, daycares, medical programs and women's needs. Experiences like this are open and available to all
members at varying times throughout the year. Watch for future opportunities or please make our local repre-
sentatives aware of your interest in capitalizing on these invitations.
Over the course of the two days, members of the NAB and the Board of Directors met together for a time of re-
viewing, planning, and preparing for the upcoming year. A highlight of the weekend was a workshop entitled
“Building CHW’s Future Together”. Susan Abramowitz, CHW Director, and Alina Ianson, National Executive Direc-
tor, lead the workshop. Leadership worked together to discuss topics such as Membership and Young Leadership,
Fundraising in a Competitive Market, Vision and Branding, and Public Affairs. This professional development op-
portunity was a wonderful chance for strengthening our vision of CHW. Forums such as this ensure CHW’s
growth and success and we hope to share this excitement with all our sisters in Calgary.

Did You Know?
In 2013, the Israel Ministry
of Education recognized
CHW Hadassim as a top 10
school for science!
Picture it: Ottawa Canada 1980. I was very privileged to be part of a Calgary Hadassah WIZO Public Affairs dele-
gation that was sent to talk to P.M. Elliot Trudeau about Israel and world Jewry. At that time I was the President
of the now defunct Lily Frank WIZO Chapter of Calgary. We were a very pro-active up-beat group of Jewish
women who dedicated themselves to the works of Public Jewish Affairs.
We arrived at the Parliament building to be greeted by Lily Frank and the Minister of protocol. Both individuals
admonished us not to speak to the Prime Minister unless he spoke to us. As we entered the foyer we were all
taken aback to see P.M. Trudeau walking towards us to greet us himself. He looked so dapper in a smart suit
and striped tie (that seemed familiar to me) and he had his signature rose in his lapel.
As he passed by the delegation, he shook everyone’s hand and gave us a warm smile.
As he passed me by I blurted out: “I am Sandy Corenblum from Calgary, Alberta, 108 Pump Hill Bay SW…" I was
blabbing on when he responded: "OH, you are the Sandy who shares the same birthday as myself: October 18th
and you write me and send me gifts each year."
"One in the same," I said and “I thought I recognized that tie." "This tie is one of my favourites and, yes, it was a
birthday gift from yours truly." he said with a very warm smile.
In the mean time Lily Frank and the minister of Protocol were sending me dagger glances.
I came to a halt (as I was about to hug him) when Mr. Trudeau looked me straight in the eye and invited me to
come into his library "for tea".
It was a day that I will never forget. I even smelled the rose on his lapel. My birthday’ soul mate was a very fine
man - may he rest in peace.

Dear Friends,
I would like to thank you all for your generosity and support of Shalom Baby.
We have welcomed 58 babies (September 2013 - May 2014) and the families
just love your gifts. Thank you!
I am also happy to report that we held our first Shalom Baby Play Group on
May 22nd at the JCC. 18 new moms with their babies (under twelve months)
attended and we are expecting a few more to join us in the next few weeks.
We will be meeting twice a month at the JCC.
I believe that with Shalom Baby and PJ Library we are reaching and engaging
young Jewish families and encouraging them to be a part of our Jewish Com-
munity.
Thank you again for your support - and I will be contacting you to arrange for
more supplies for the Fall.
Warmly,
Kathie Wainer

REPORT FROM ISRAEL VISIT
I am writing to you on behalf of our children, women and hospitals in
Israel.
In February, I had the privilege of visiting the Neri Bloomfield School of
Design and Education in Haifa and the Assaf Harofeh Medical Centre
south of Tel Aviv.
My visit to the hospital's CHW Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Insti-
tute was especially inspiring. Watching by video how a minute instru-
ment opens blood vessels in the brain was very moving for me. This pro-
cedure actually reverses the debilitating side effects of a stroke. Some
patients can resume their daily lives shortly after an episode. Miracles
happen there every day!
It is an honour for us to help fund a $ 1m machine that is desperately
needed for more patients to reap its benefits.
Our long history of supporting the educational, social and medical needs
in Israel make us all very proud.
Lily Fixler
In May, I was in Israel with my family and we visited Hadassim
Village. I must say more people should be aware of what CHW is
doing. On our tour, we met 23 people who had gone through the
program and they told us their stories. One of the music teachers
is an alumnus of the program. Another person told of going
through the program, then on to the army and now is supporting
the village.
We met youth who have no place to go and have been brought to
the village as it provides a safe haven. They are allowed to stay in
the unit for sixty days. The kids have no where else to turn. Everyone enters and exits through a security
which offers the youth the needed level of protection. There are house mother/parents who give them sup-
port. Someone is there to help them at each step of the way. It is truly amazing!
The school has a high success rate in getting these students through high school. But sadly the rooms are in
dire need of upgrading.
I wish more people could taste what we did. We found it absolutely amazing. I want to encourage people to
visit CHW projects and see the wonderful work being done.

Senior Connection Tea - Reesa Girvitz
The Senior Connection Tea, held on May 28, 2014, at the Trinity Lodge, was a huge success, thanks to Claire
Berman, Sandra Eisner, and Lila Mydlarski, who organized it.
The Tea was an afternoon of celebration - it was Yom Yerushalyim. The delightfully, talented, Katie Baker
entertained us, singing in Yiddish and Hebrew, as well as playing her French Horn. She was accompanied by
Mark Haley.
CHW honoured Irene Ross, for her many contributions to our organization. Sandy Martin introduced Irene
and read a poem that Therese Nagler had written about her. Irene made sure that the dream of Senior
Connection become a reality. Her years of dedication, staying connected to our seniors, really did make a
difference.
In her humble way of accepting the honour, she thanked the members who had worked with her - baking,
phoning, driving and serving, over the years she was at the helm. Many of those members were in the
room, celebrating with Irene, still baking and serving.
Thank you to all who were involved this year.
TRIBUTE TO IRENE ROSS
Irene was born in Amsterdam, Holland two weeks after the Germans invaded. Two years later, her mother made a very
difficult decision, she arranged for Irene to be hidden in the north-western part of Holland with a non-Jewish family
whom she had never met. In 1945, her mother reclaimed Irene at her refuge. Her mother remarried and in 1956 they
moved to Ireland and in 1957 to New Zealand. She met her husband Stuart in New Zealand and it was his medical re-
search that brought them Canada - first to Montreal for four years and then to Calgary. Stuart and Irene have raised their
two children – Daniel and Katherine and three grandchildren – grandson in Edmonton and twin granddaughters in Cal-
gary.
Her mother taught bridge in New Zealand and got involved in WIZO through bridge. Irene’s mother-in-law was very ac-
tive – president of WIZO.
Irene became very involved in Calgary Centre Hadassah- WIZO. She ran the Youth Aliyah campaign for two years and was
President of Tikvah Chapter for four years. When she was on Council, there was much discussion about how important it
is to get the senior ladies who had cooked and baked and fundraised for some many years back together. It was then
that Irene gathered a list of names of seniors who had been involved and others that were known and these people were
invited to an informative afternoon bringing the ladies up to date with Calgary and National CHW with entertainment
and tea at the Renior. Irene said she could have only done this with the help of some absolutely wonderful volunteers
who phoned, baked, served, picked up and drove. Participants told her that the events were wonderful as “I never get so
see my friends” and these gatherings brought them together for a lot of socializing.
Irene believes in the work that CHW is doing and has been done in Israel. She says that she is fortunate to be a Sustainer
as Stuart and she are in a position to support this organization and its projects. They have visited Israel four times and
have seen the need for shelters, daycares and hospitals. Her message is, if you can, stay involved and support Hadassah
WIZO.
On this occasion, Teresa Nagler has written this poem
in her honour:
In our midst is a person deserving of praise,
She’s helped to serve others in so many ways.
Sweet and soft spoken, with a radiant smile,
A pleasure to work with – This lady has style.
She has chaired Youth Aliayah, and the job was done well.
She led Chapter Tikvah whose membership swelled.
Creative, she took us in a brand new direction,
Embracing the plan to hold ‘Senior Connection.’
That’s why WIZO gathers to provide information
With friendship and coffee and good conversation.
Without her this project would have been at a loss,
So let’s all pay tribute to our own Irene Ross!
• An extra big thank you to Naomi Kerr and Halley Girvitz, who continue to write such eloquent cards for our
members.
• A big thank you to all of the Canvassers and telethon volunteers for their contribution to the success of
Annual Campaign.
TODAH RABAH
Greetings from Tikvah Chapter
On Tuesday, March 18th
, 2013, Tikvah Chapter met at Reesa
Girvitz’ home for a Show and Tell on Israel Now and Then.
Lily Fixler reported on her visit to two CHW projects in
Israel.
Bobbie Osadchey spoke to the chapter about “Everything
you always wanted to know about difficult times, but were
afraid to ask” on May 5th
at the home of Lily Fixler.
Then on Monday, June 30th
, Tikvah Chapter members met
at the Little Synagogue at Heritage Park. Our wonderful
docents at the Little Synagogue were our own:

lunch were all grand.
We are planning our next meeting for September. Stay
tuned for details.
SHEM TOV AWARD
2014 Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, Calgary Centre
Betty Sherwood is the kind of volunteer every organization is
searching for. She is an initiator, willing to step up, to be involved
and is committed. Betty is known for her willingness to be involved,
she helped in the office in Toronto, wrote for The Reporter and al-
ways made time to volunteer where there was a need. She has
continued this commitment with her return to Calgary with her in-
volvement at all levels, including the local Tikvah chapter level, the
Calgary CHW Council, casino coordinator, event organizer for the
Senior Connection Chanukah tea and volunteer for other events
and fundraising initiatives. Betty is a leader for CHW and for other
organizations in the community. Betty embodies the true spirit of
volunteerism and she is truly valued and appreciated by Canadian
Hadassah-WIZO and all of its membership. We are very grateful to
have Betty as a volunteer.
