coloured Cotswold stone this ‘picture book village’ hascharming ironstone cottages, thatched and gabledroofs, mullioned windows and colourful gardens.

Kelmscott is a remote and unspoilt village close to theRiver Thames. In St George’s churchyard is the tomb ofWilliam Morris, poet, craftsman, socialist and leader ofthe Arts & Crafts movement who lived at nearbyKelmscott Manor, which houses a collection of hispossessions and those of his family and associates.

A beautiful Cotswold village with a large open green andelegant stone and thatched cottages, Kingham has oneof the area’s mainline railway stations. Country Life oncejudged it ‘England’s Favourite Village’ and it’s certainlybuilding a reputation as a gastronomic centre withseveral fine pubs in the area. There are a number ofwalks and cycle rides centred on the village.

Old Minster Lovell is a pretty village of Cotswold stoneand thatch. Close to the church, and romanticallypositioned on the River Windrush, lie the reputedlyhaunted ruins of a fine 15th century hall.

Swinbrook is the quintessential English village with a river, pub, cricket ground and church. The church is notable forthe striking 17th century Fettiplace monuments and thegraves of four of the famous Mitford sisters.

Witney is a surprise to many people: a large, prosperous market town with not only a large opengreen space right in the centre, Church Green, but alsoareas of open riverside meadows hidden just out ofview. Woodstock is home to Blenheim Palace but wellworth a visit in its own right. Fine Georgian facades, most hiding medieval buildings behind and centredround the 18th century town hall and its marketplace. Bustling market towns and picturesque villages

THERE is no space here to list all thetowns and villages of the OxfordshireCotswolds, consider this just a very briefguide to help you discover some of our

local treasures!

Bampton is a large village famous for its Morris Dancingtraditions celebrated at the annual Bampton Day ofDance. Parts of the village may seem familiar even tofirst time visitors – it is used for filming the village scenesin the popular TV drama Downton Abbey.

The small village of Bladon lies on the south side ofBlenheim Park and is the burial place of Sir WinstonChurchill, whose simple grave can be found in StMartin’s churchyard.

Burfordmercifully escaped any Victorian ‘improvement’and as you look down the steeply sloping High Streetyou will see an unbroken line of shop fronts and houseswith virtually nothing later than the 18th century. As wellas the medieval market hall, The Tolsey, and theparticularly impressive ‘wool’ church with its manyfascinating memorials, make sure that you explore thequiet side streets away from the main road.

Nestling in the Evenlode Valley and with its own mainlinerailway station, Charlbury is surrounded by the remains ofthe Wychwood Forest. A great centre for walking, Charlburyalso has a small local museum that charts the town’s past.

Chipping Norton is very much a living, working markettown with regular markets and a busy town centre. Aswell as a fine collection of shops and restaurants, it has asmall local museum, a successful theatre, a busy leisurecentre and even a lido – an outdoor swimming pool.

The charming little village of Filkins has many attractivestone houses, several with the characteristic local slabfencing. Housed in a 17th century cottage is the tinySwinford Museum and just down the road are fine 18thcentury buildings housing Cotswold Woollen Weavers.

Of course over the years OxfordshireCotswolds locations have played ‘host’ tomany series and dramas and none more sothan the magnificent Blenheim Palacewhich has seen action films, wizardry, political intrigue and fantasy filmed there –but obviously not all at the same time…

Rousham is one of Britain’s most unspoilt andundiscovered landscape gardens and was named bygarden writer and broadcaster Monty Don as one of hisfavourite gardens in the country. Designed by WilliamKent in the 18th century, Rousham represents the firstphase of English landscape design and remains largelyunaltered since its conception. Don’t miss the walledgarden with its herbaceous borders and formal parterre, and classically inspired architectural elements such asthe statues of Venus Vale and various temples.Rousham’s uncommercial nature means there is notearoom or shop, but bring a picnic and enjoy the peaceand tranquility.

Batsford Arboretum is home to one of the finestbotanical collections in the country including the nationalcollection of Japanese flowering cherries. With 56 acresof wild gardens, paths, streams and stunning Cotswoldviews, it is a wonderful place to visit throughout the year.

2016 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of‘Capability’ Brown, so it is the ideal time to visitBlenheim Palace with its 2,000 acres of landscaped

parkland, one of the finest examples of his work.Blenheim will host various special events to honour hiswork, including a new exhibition.

Other houses in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with fineexamples of period gardens are Chastleton House, with its Jacobean topiary, astronomical garden andcroquet lawn (where the laws of the game wereestablished) and Kelmscott Manor, home to WilliamMorris, where the lovely gardens were a constant sourceof inspiration.

Cotswold Wildlife Parkmay be better known for itsanimal collection, but it also has impressive gardenswhich demonstrate the wonder and diversity of the plantkingdom.

Throughout the summer, private residences in villagesand towns across the Oxfordshire Cotswolds opentheir gardens to the public, giving the opportunity toexplore some rarely-seen glorious English gardens –check the What’s On section of our website for moredetails.
