Publishers’ NoteThe recent Gulf oil spill has reminded us that planet Earth is a fragile place in which to live. We urge you to give to local Gulf families and communities who are making a difference now. Please visit www.gnof.org/programs/gulf-coast-oil-spill-fund/disaster-on-the-gulf-coast/

to help the oil clean-up process.

While we have the technology to harness the Earth’s resources, we must also remember to take responsibility for our actions. Like during the Industrial Revolution, we are once again entering into a new era where energy can be controlled on a finer level, and the world is becoming a smaller place in which to live. We urge that everyone from corporate executives, to small business owners, and all who read this message start living more intelligently, more responsibly, more compassionately. In this issue, learn about the Logic of Brainstorms, Communicating with Nature, the art of energetic connection in Tantra, and much more. Inside Look was also privileged enough to be hosted by the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite this spring and came back with oodles of inspiring photographs for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

To be the ethical, engaged, creative, successful, and lively human being you intend to be, you need your brain. But it is not enough to possess a perfectly good brain — you must also use it. If you don’t use your brain you will find yourself trapped in trivialities, condemned to impulsivity, led around by anxiety, and duller and sadder than you have any need to be. The cliché is true: your mind is a terrible thing to waste.

People waste their brains. They allow themselves to worry about next to nothing, wasting neurons. They allow themselves to grow numb with distractions, wasting neurons. They allow themselves to be ruled by a perpetual to-do list, running from errand to chore to chore to errand, wasting neurons. Because they have not trained themselves to aim their brain in the direction of rich and rewarding ideas, ideas worth the wholesale enlistment of neurons, they stay mired in the mental equivalent of a rat race, spending their neuronal capital on spinning hamster wheels.

Our culture applauds this brain abdication. It needs you to care about the latest movie, the latest gadget, the latest sermon, the latest investment opportunity. Every aspect of our culture has something to sell you and needs to grab your attention. Marketers do not want you to be thinking too strenuously about your budding symphony or your scientific research and miss their sales pitch. What if you didn’t answer your phone when it rang? How could they telemarket? What if you didn’t check your email every few minutes? What good would their banner ads do? Your brainstorms are dollars out of their pockets.

This antipathy to rich thinking occurs at home, at school, among friends, and even with your mate. Parents tell you to clean your room, not to create your own cosmology myths. Teachers tell you to do math this hour and history the next, not to turn your brain over to a magnificent obsession. Friends ask you to shop, not to think; to play cards, not to think; to join them at a hot new restaurant, not to think; to watch a can’t-miss television show, not to think. Your wife doesn’t say, “Honey, let’s spend a few hours thinking!” Your husband doesn’t ask, “Dear, what big ideas are you working on?” Indeed, if it could be put to a vote, thinking might well be outlawed. Expect such a proposition on your ballot soon.

The good news is that you can jump off this bandwagon and opt for brainstorms. For thousand of years, our wisest philosophers have asserted that the trick to creating an authentic life is taking charge of how you use your brain. It is up to you whether you will dumb yourself down or smarten yourself up. If

you opt to smarten yourself up by cultivating rich ideas with weight and worth, you will get to make meaning in ways that few people experience. The person next to you may think that the epitome of brain powering is a sharp game of bridge or a rousing afternoon with a crossword puzzle. You will discover that real brain power is holding a rich idea over time as you productively obsess your novel into existence, build your remarkable business, or aid in the understanding of some profound scientific puzzle.

You learn to opt for brainstorms, for big thinking over time, and by doing so you fulfill your promise — and your promises to yourself. An idea for a novel sparks your imagination and, because you let it, it turns into a brainstorm. An idea for an Internet business wakes you up in the middle of the night and, because you let it, it turns into a brainstorm. A scientific problem grips you and, because you let it, it turns into a brainstorm. A brainstorm is the full activation of your neuronal forces, an activation in support of an idea that you intend to cherish and elaborate, so powerful that it amounts to a productive obsession. You work on it in the mind, by thinking, and you work on it in actuality, by actually writing, by actually running for office, by actually launching your business.

Do these brainstorms come with a money-back guarantee? Yes and no. What you are not guaranteed are successful results. You might, for example, chew on a scientific puzzle for a decade and never solve it. Albert Einstein explained, “I think and think for months and years. Ninety-nine times the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right.” Not even that hundredth time is guaranteed you. All that you are guaranteed from a life of brainstorms is the possibility of successes — which you never would have achieved if you had avoided thinking — and pride from having lived up to your expectations for yourself. And that’s everything.

Thinking is destiny. The theologian Tryon Edwards put it this way: “Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in actions; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” As you think, so you live. If you think about nothing, it would hardly be a surprise if you complained about feeling empty and failed to rise to most occasions. If you keep your thinking as small as possible, you will probably feel and act small. If you demand that your brain produce nothing but conventional thoughts, how can you be anything but conventional? If your idea of flexing your mind is to spin fantasies, play word games, second-guess your choices, or worry endlessly, I can picture your destiny. Can’t you? Isn’t it crystal clear that how you

use your mind determines who you are and how you lead your life?

Live up a storm. A brainstorm. Or rather, a series of brainstorms: one after another, season after season, year after year. When you engage your mind with an idea ripe enough to drip juice, large enough to fill an auditorium, fascinating enough to seduce, gripping enough to hold you enthralled, you scoot boredom out the door, make sense of your days, and live your reasons for being. In a café across town, two students may be merrily debating the meaning of life; you are making your meaning. In a skyscraper downtown, two marketers may be plotting how to grab your attention; you are safe and secure, inoculated by virtue of your brainstorm. You are too busy and engrossed to notice even your own misgivings about the universe. You have bitten into something; your own chewing drowns out the world’s chatter.

It is a platitude that the average brain is not used well or often enough. This truth tends to elicit a smile, a nod, and a wink. We seem happy to collude in the idea that it is fine for brains to work at only a small percentage of their capacity, just as it is fine that workers slack off as soon as the boss disappears. You, however, may not want to take part in this anti-brain conspiracy. You may see the intimate connection between brainstorms and personal meaning: that to make the meaning you intend to make, you must use more of your brain. I hope that you will vote for brainstorms. It is their light that illuminates the darkness and their fire that warms the human heart.

Tantra and the Art of

Energetic Connecting By Meloney Hudson

PHOTOS8.COM

Energetic connecting is an event that sparks and maintains an unobstructed

flow of energy between two people. In an electrical connection a wire joins two sources and carries a current between them; connect-ing with another person likewise establishes an energetic bond so that a harmonious, healthy, mutually-empowering flow of per-sonal energy is maintained. Energetic con-necting enhances every kind of relationship with joy and love, from an incidental brush with a stranger to your deepest, most intimate partnerships. Energetic connecting could be the key to uniting individuals, communities, and nations.

While a sincere smile, engaged eye contact, and an open, welcoming posture initiates a connection, a continuous flow of energetic exchange is the essence of a true connection of depth and meaning. Acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation create a vibra-tion that can be sensed by others and often influences the turning on of that vibration in others. Transmitting and receiving this high vibration is the cornerstone of energetic con-necting, which ensures a harmonious and meaningful experience.

For some people, for whom energetically connecting is an innate talent, their relation-ships are consistently joyful and drama-free. For others, connecting this way is a beneficial

skill they can learn. Tantra is the ideal source from which we can learn to connect with oth-ers. Tantra is based on ecstatic relationships established through the giving and receiving of energy. Though its history is shrouded in mystery, Tantra offers easy and accessible practices that can instantly improve how you connect with others and ultimately become the way you engage in relationships. Tantra and the Art of Energetic Connecting

Tantra is a spiritual path that emerged in Asia about 500 CE, though archaeological evi-dence indicates that some Tantric practices may have been performed by Hindu yogis as early as 2500 BCE. With an amalgam of principles and practices originating in Hin-duism and Buddhism, Tantra incorporates postures, breathing, mantras, meditation and other techniques that are used to expand consciousness and clear the body’s energetic pathways to establish a cosmic connection with Divine Spirit for a life of bliss that over-flows with peace, joy, and love.

But unlike the Hindu and Buddhist philoso-phies, Tantra celebrates sexual energy and uses it as a fundamental tool for enlighten-ment. Sexual energy is respected by Tantric masters and practitioners as the most power-ful force in the physical body and the key to

transformation and transcendence. Acknowl-edged as more than a physical drive to mate and procreate, sexual energy is valued for its life-force benefits and used to vitalize and pu-rify the body to prepare it for spiritual union. Certain techniques harness life-force energy and transform it into healing energy that en-ergizes the cells and dissolves obstructions developed through old wounding or trauma. The result is transcendence above limitation and negativity to higher realms of conscious-ness, health, and radiant, positive energy. In this clear state, union with the Divine energy of the Highest Power is easily established and maintained. Connecting with other people is a ritual practice for enlightenment, for they also serve as energetic vehicles of the Divine. Clearing the energy body for illumination is a serious endeavor, but there are three simple Tantric practices that you can perform at any time for heavenly connections here on earth: Acknowledging the Divine, Being Love, and Being Fully Present. The rewards include an expanded perspective of the members of our earth family and a soulful way to relate with them.

Acknowledging the Divine

Every person on the planet—the girl behind the checkout counter, the guy sleeping on the street, your favorite celebrity, your husband

6 www.InsideLookMagazine.com www.InsideLookNetwork.com

Page 7: Inside Look July August

or wife, your children—is God/dess in the flesh. Tantra teaches us to see the divine in each person. The practice of seeing beyond another person’s clothing, personality and beliefs, and honoring her or him as a unique representative of the Highest Power is the first step to a positive connection and harmo-nious relating.

The yogic greeting used in Tantra is Namaste, “I recognize the divine in you,” expressed with a reverential bow, with hands in prayer forma-tion at the chest. This simple gesture imme-diately establishes a sacred connection. You don’t need to actually bow to everyone you meet, but a mental Namaste reminds you that the person before you is divine and worthy of honor. When we remember that everyone is divine, we’re less inclined to judge, criticize, or react negatively when our viewpoints and values differ; we’re more likely to appreci-ate both the ideas and the person delivering them. You wouldn’t get irritated by Buddha or Kwan Yin if they said something that you didn’t agree with. You’d listen, appreciate the value of their heavenly message, and respect-fully share your perspective.

Acknowledging that you yourself are divine is also essential. We must accept and appreciate ourselves as unique emanations of God/dess. Not until we love and honor ourselves can we truly love others. With self-love, we respect our own ideas and feelings as much as we do others’. We’re empowered to communicate honestly and dismiss the need for outside ap-proval. We can maintain a healthy, clear, and positive energetic exchange with others.

To acknowledge the divine in another per-son, establish conscious eye contact and real-ly look into the eyes of the divine one before you. As windows to the soul, the eyes reveal the essence of a person, and your receptive gaze assures acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation. You will thus relate on the divine level to every person you encounter. If everyone were to adopt this practice, one day perhaps the words “foe,” “enemy,” and “bad guy” will disappear from our language.

Being Love

While Namaste is the conduit of a positive connection, love is the electricity that flows within it. Love is a positive and joyful energy that originates in our hearts, envelops our entire body, and radiates outwardly to the world. Love is a state of being, and not the product of emotional and physical attraction that we confuse with divine love. Divine love is unconditional and constant, no matter what the situation.

It’s easy to “feel the love” and connect with loving people. These charismatic souls are juicy, electric, and magnetic. They emit a pal-

pable, loving vibration that uplifts, inspires, and energizes everyone around them. We’re attracted to them because their energy gives us feelings of acknowledgement, acceptance, and appreciation. Their bountiful love in-spires our hearts to open and exchange love with them and others.

To be love, open your heart and let your love flow with every encounter. Smile and inten-tionally beam your love energy to strangers, co-workers, and family, then watch them respond in kind. The next time you prepare for a confrontation, take off your boxing gloves and get into the ring with an open heart. Watch the other person’s defenses melt away. Watch him decide to cooperate. Love transcends our emotions and helps us remain in our hearts, enabling us to understand and accept, instead of react and blame. Loving compassion asks us to walk in another’s shoes and empathize with them so that we may of-fer solutions and support. By being love and a master of the transmission and reception of love, you become an ambassador of harmony and a role model for positive change on the planet.

Being Fully Present

A solid connection with an open energetic exchange is maintained with the practice of being fully present. Ram Dass was right to ad-vise us to Be Here Now. This practice height-ens our awareness of every nuance of every moment, of this moment, without thoughts of the past or present, judgment or ego. Only by consciously acknowledging, accepting, and appreciating the present moment, the here and now, are we truly alive. The seeds of joy aren’t contained in the pursuit of things or the fulfillment of expectations, but in the numerous blessings that surround us this very minute.

Not being fully present imperils the harmon-ic flow of our connections. Sadly, most of us are rarely fully present except in intimate moments. We’re usually in our heads, preoc-cupied by our busy schedules or immersed in our emotions, rendered blind to the beauty in and of our lives. In conversation we often zone out and ponder our grocery list or think about what we plan to say when the other person stops talking. Sometimes our condi-tioning and past experiences cloud what is real, making us emotional, opinionated, dis-trustful, or fearful. Our ego motivates us to fight to be right, or at least be better than the other guy.

When we hold a mindful intention to be here now, our relationships grow into conscious connection. We can keep the circulation of positive energy strong by taking off the blind-ers of our tiny, personal worlds and seeing life fully as the multi-dimensional gift it is. Our

little wants and needs become irrelevant, our emotional triggers fizzle out, and we recog-nize the riches that already exist in our rela-tionships and our lives.

To be fully present when engaging in conver-sation, look into the other person’s eyes, lis-ten deeply, and care about what is being said. Practice balance so you can understand the other person’s viewpoint, and rise above judg-ment and your need to be right. Recognize the words of the other person as divine; after all, these words are being pronounced by the god/dess before you. Let go of your limited perceptions, and find joy in the beauty pres-ent in every person you encounter. Practice being fully present and watch conflict and disharmony disappear from your life. Wit-ness the materialization of an abundance of gifts within your relationships.

Conclusion

By incorporating these three simple steps from Tantra into your life, you will dramati-cally shift your paradigm of connecting. En-ergetic connecting makes every encounter a rich one that enhances your potential to grow as a human and spiritual being. If everyone adopted these practices, cooperation among communities and nations would prevail. Per-haps Peace On Earth would become a reality.

So … how does sexual energy play into all of this? Sexual energy is more than the drive to mate and procreate. When we engage in Tantric methods, our sexual energy imbues our cells with life force, purifies our physical body, and clears our energetic pathways for unfettered energy flow and divine connec-tion. While the three steps described above are the foundation of positive connections with people, advanced energy practices will heal and fill you with the energy that will accelerate your relationships to the most ec-static forms of relating imaginable.

And, yes, Tantra is a most sacred, sensual ex-change you can practice with your beloved. It accelerates your spiritual growth and trans-forms your relationship. But that’s another article.

It’s easy to find books and teachers who share the Tantric techniques for healing. An online search will help you find people in your area.

Love itself is never painful, it is meant to open our heart to bliss. It is our expectation that causes pain. Love without conditions.

~ Kaushal Aras

Extraordinary Love is not simply an emotion, a feeling, or a body sensation. It is awareness, consciousness, and a way of Being. It is a con-scious choice to love without conditions. You love another person simply for the sake of love, and not because of the attributes that they demonstrate, a special circumstance, or to fulfill your needs. One makes an extraordi-nary choice to love extraordinarily. In the context of everyday living and loving, I’ve observed seven different ways, seven dif-ferent roles through which we relate to oth-ers with extraordinary love. These roles are: parent-child, friend-sibling, student-teacher, lover-beloved, man-community, husband-wife, and self-higher self. In my book, The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love, I provide a blueprint for creating peace within and without. Incorporating this knowledge into our consciousness enables us to flavor every endeavor of life with harmony, peace, and happiness.

1. The Symphony of Unconditional Sacrifice (Parent–Child): Despite how grown up and successful we become, part of us always remains a little child in our parent’s eyes. They may not have had the right tools or know-how to express this unconditional love for us in a skillful manner, but a parent never stops loving their child. By opening our heart to our parents we remove the barriers to ex-perience the extraordinary love they have for us.

2. The Symphony of Friendship and Unlimited Generosity (Friend–Sibling): A true friendship is a treasure worth its weight in gold. As the saying goes, “A friend is some-one who knows the music in our heart, and

can render the composition back to us even when we doubt our own melody.” As we navigate through the ebb and flow of life, we need to be willing to accept the gifts from our friends, for doing so provides them with the gift of giving. No matter what level of success we achieve, we won’t do it by ourselves. We need others to help us along the way, and it becomes our loving responsibility to pay it forward.

3. The Symphony of Obedience (Student–Teacher): The covenant between a disciple and master requires respect and obedience. What follows is an awakening of knowledge. Humility allows wisdom to flow. Acknowledging our teacher’s greatness breaks down the walls of ignorance and ego. Obedience to the master removes any blocks that keep us from leading a life of our highest potential. The heart that is open to such love of obedience is magnanimous, understanding and compassionate towards all beings.

4. The Symphony of True Romance (Lover–Beloved): True romance requires that one surrender completely to the agony and ecstasy of love. To feel the sweet pain and exultation of spirit is better than to feel no love at all. Extraordinary love in this context of true romance is a communion, a complete surrender, a dance, an art, a supreme expres-sion of beauty.

5. The Symphony of Community and Humanity (Man–Community): Our indi-vidual significance as a human being doesn’t come from material successes but as a result of self-actualization. When we embody the true meaning of community and harmony in the core of our Being, we become intoxi-cated with love. Community means coming together in unity. Humanity, then, is the es-sence of oneness. Community love is accept-ing others with compassion.

6. The Symphony of Devotion (Hus-band–Wife): Devotional love is giving of self through thoughts, feelings, and deeds with complete surrender. This is the art of conscious loving with humility. When the feminine goddess merges with the masculine counterpart with such devotion and surren-der, divine intimacy becomes available.

7. The Symphony of Awareness (Self–Higher Self ): When love becomes our re-ligion, nature acts as our scripture, and we

begin to merge with the higher levels of con-sciousness. Meditating in this divine realm of consciousness then gives us access to the eternal. A sense of oneness with our world engulfs us and we become present to the maj-esty of divinity in each of us. Extraordinary love becomes a natural expression, a way of Being.

When love is extraordinary, it imparts its perfume to the entire universe. Such extraor-dinary love cannot be concealed once it has been awakened within our heart. ~ Kaushal Aras

INTRODUCTION TO THE SACRED MAYAN CALENDAR-COSMOLOGY

AND THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING Part 3 of 6 Read each issue of Inside Look Magazine to study our complete special report on the Mayan Calendar.

By Farel Footman, Roses Light Dancing Based on the work of Carl Johan Calleman, Ph.D.

Page 11: Inside Look July August

“The Maya could never distinguish the World Tree from the Calendar, or the Calendar from the World Tree, they were inseparable...The World Tree created an orientation in space, while the Calendar created an orientation in time.”The Cosmology of the World Tree (34MCTC)

Figure 11. “The World Tree of the Maya in the center of the Four Directions. Native American traditions commonly endow the geographical directions with different spiritual qualities (as in the Medicine Wheel). Among the Maya the Four Directions were symbolized by directional deities, so-called Bacabs.”

“In the view of the ancient Maya, the Tree of Life, or Heart of Heaven, was the creator of everything (even though it may have needed to be activated by Hunab-Ku, or the One God, in the beyond). Before time existed, “there was only the incomprehensible divinity of Hunab-Ku, permeating the Heart of Heaven, which slumbered for seven eternities. Then by the power of his word Hunab-Ku thrilled the Heart of Heaven.”

As noted above, “The Four Directions are associated with different energies and colors that give them different qualities. The Four Directions are related to the center of the world, called Yaxkin by the Maya. At first sight, this may not appear very different from the standard European view, but the meaning given to these directions is clearly different from what is common today. In the Native American view, the Four Directions embody spiritual qualities that influence human life differently depending on the reigning time cycle. The spiritual winds generated by the Four Directions, dominating different time cycles, are the very essence of the Mayan view, whereas in the typical European view the four directions are seen merely as a passive coordinate system applied to the earth.”

According to the Maya, the World Tree (figure 11) is what creates and maintains the Four Directions of the world and generates

wave movements that ultimately control the destiny of human kind.

Inside Look Magazine Vol. 2, Issue 4 11

Page 12: Inside Look July August

Each direction represented different spiritual qualities that we intuitively sense ourselves. We intuit, for example, that there are real differences between the eastern and western mentalities. The Mayan Calendar-Cosmology helps understand why we feel this way. Calleman states:

“Yet organizing the world according to four directions associated with different qualities may sound natural to all of us. Most of us recognize at the very least, significant mental and spiritual differences between the directions of East and West. Whereas we see the East as having been dominated by collective structures and a meditative tendency, the West is seen as individualist, extroverted, and action-oriented. What is the background of these differences? Where is the line that separates East from West? Where, geographically speaking, is the center of the planetary Medicine Wheel? (See figure 12 below)

Table X (Th

e Global Brain)

Figure 12. Calleman locates the World Tree or Invisible Cross hypothetically at longitude 12 East. Notice that it extends from central Africa in the nation of Gabon and up through Rome, Germany and Sweden. By comparing historical events during odd and even numbered baktuns (one baktun equals 394 years) of the Great Cycle or National Underworld, Calleman finds that a definite pulse oscillates along the planetary midline created by the World Tree or Invisible Cross. This pulse comes from the earth’s core.

Here Calleman is using the Mayan Calendar to illustrate that our own personality or more importantly our ‘consciousness’ is shaped by where we live and by the dualistic or unitary nature of an Underworld. We are more connected to the planet than we may realize.

“The model I have suggested based on the Four Directions—with a midline separating two global hemispheres—is consistent with the so-called Hermetic principle: as above, so below. The qualities of the Four Directions point to a number of parallels between the “global brain” of the planet and the human brain. Our two brain hemispheres, right and left, have different functions because they are microcosmic reflections of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres of the planet (See Table X above).

Calleman found that each kind of polarity affects a particular part of our brain creating the various states of consciousness, and hence, each part of the globe reacts like a brain. Thus, what Calleman uncovers is that we are directly affected by our planet because our consciousness shifts in correspondence with the shifts in Light created by the World Tree.

“The rational, action-oriented Western Hemisphere is a parallel to the left “male” brain hemisphere with its analytical thinking and centers for speech, calculation, and sequential logic. The meditative Eastern Hemisphere, on the other hand, parallels the right, intuitive, wholeness-oriented, “female” brain hemisphere, which is also the center for our spatial and artistic abilities. What this means is that the different mentalities we find typical for people from the East and West have ultimately been generated by the World Tree.”

“It is important to point out that in the cosmology of the four directions, all the different parts of the global brain are needed, and each has a role to play in the integrated activity and balance of the large whole. To draw another parallel with the individual human brain, new creative thinking typically arises in an interaction between the two brain hemispheres, in which the right hemisphere generates the new ideas and the left hemisphere evaluates them. Unfortunately, the two hemispheres do not interact in this way. While the technology of the West has certainly been exported to the East, and much philosophy in the past few decades has gone from the East to the West, the two modes of thinking are as yet not integrated; they merely coexist…Fruitful creative interaction is hampered by the lack of a common framework, a recognition that the two modes of thought are generated by the same source. The cosmology of the World Tree and the calendar of ancient Mesoamerica could help such a holistic framework emerge. The thinking of modern humans is out of balance partly because it has shut out the original West.” ~

Movies, games, and social media networks are extremely stimulating and have been slowly taking the place of enjoying nature. Do you ever think, “I’ll walk to the store to pick up what I need”? What would that be like? People are much healthier when they are moving their bodies, especially if they are outdoors.

Being outside brings an entirely different vibration to what you are doing. It opens your mind and clears your heart. It takes away the structure of having a roof over your head and opens a clearer path to the spiritual world. To get the most of the human experience, the spirit must learn to incorporate fully into the body. Being outdoors and communing with nature is very ground-ing; it helps the spirit seat itself fully into the body and helps you to realize that your spirit is a part of your body. Feeling that connection helps you use the spirit and the body together to create great things and understand the goodness of nature and spirit. When you are grounded it is easy to stay on task, remember where you parked your car, and be more aware of what is going on around you.

Here are a few ways to connect and communicate with nature in order to really incorporate your spirit and your body, so they may work together ef-fortlessly:

• Findaplacethatisfreeofcitynoise,hasalittlegreeneryandpos-sibly a little water. This can be as simple as a plant and a fountain in your back yard. Or you could make a grander trip to a far flung place you’ve never been before. When you arrive, take your shoes and socks off and plant your feet firmly on the ground, preferably in the dirt, grass, or sand. Pay attention to how the earth feels beneath your feet. Let the feelings of life and loving motherly support move into your feet, up your legs and through your body.

Feel how good it feels to be connected to such a huge source of endless un-conditionally loving energy. Listen to what the earth has to say to you and ask what you can do to help her.

• Plantsomething!Preferablysomethingyoucaneat.Playinginthedirt without gloves on, planting a seed, watering, watching it grow and then fortifying your body with what you created is an absolutely stellar way to feel the connection of body and spirit. You can enjoy watching Mother Nature support you in creating just like your creator does. It brings creating your life the way you want to a whole new level of ease and grace.

• Layoutside inthemoonlightandwatchthenightsky.Seehowamazing it is to see stars twinkle and planets shine. Giving yourself time to notice how vast the universe is helps you see how important your connection to it is. The world would not be the same without you in it. You are a unique part of the big picture. Just like earth helps make up the universe, you help make up the population of the people it supports.

The energy you send out to show you care and support Mother Earth helps to feed her. If the Earth was void of plants, animals, and people, she would be like a mother without her child. She thrives on nurturing the life on her and needs you as part of the whole to which she gives. We have a message from Mother Nature to all of you: Thank you for joining me and enjoy the ride.

Our instincts about people’s personalities, feelings, and intentions

depend, to a large extent, on what we see in their faces and their body movements. We are all intuitive ‘nonverbal readers’ from birth. That is why we can increase the effectiveness of our communication when we are able to quickly and accurately read a person’s face and body language.

Face reading (Physiognomy) shows us how understanding the structure of the face and its accompanying features reveals a person’s personality style. Face reading can also tell us how people like to solve problems, deal with stress, their openness, their intimacy needs and even their basic honesty. The face is a living record of an individual’s life and, like personality, it is formed by both inherited genetics and how a person responds to life experiences.

Reading body language (Kinesics) includes facial expressions (not features), gestures, and how a person moves their body. Each movement or gesture gives clues to that person’s personality and what they are thinking. We are much more than a physical body. Each one of us has an energy that flows through us, around us, and between us.

We can measure the various electrical impulses that flow through us with highly sensitive medical machines. Kirlian photography has shown an energy field called an aura that surrounds us. And, most of us have at one

time or another felt that exciting spark of energy called love that passes between each other.

Here’s a sample of how face reading works…

Let’s take one feature – the nose – and describe some of its personality implications. Because the nose is how we take in air, which provides the energy to sustain life, it is perhaps the most important feature on a person’s face. The nose gives insights about how people support themselves and others. The nose not only indicates the amount of energy available to a person, but also shows their work style and how they handle money.

For example, people with a concave or “ski jump” nose work almost entirely from feelings – the more extreme the concavity the stronger the personality traits. Feelings and emotions have an important bearing on their work. In a supportive environment, there is nothing they can’t do; conversely in an emotionally non-supportive workplace it is very hard for them to accomplish anything. It is very important that they receive some recognition for their efforts, sometimes all that’s needed is a simple positive acknowledgement. A straight nose belongs to a person who makes logical buying decisions. A small ball on the tip of the nose means someone appreciates quality, and a large ball on the tip of the nose has to do with money. While ears that stick out are a sign of independence and nonconformity, low eyebrows show a tendency to interrupt, but only because if it doesn’t get said, it may be forgotten.

Whether leading, managing, selling, hiring, negotiating, speaking, or interacting, the ability to determine someone’s attitude and mind-set is a skill we all need to master. Becoming a dynamic communicator is not just defined by mastery of a verbal style or a well-rehearsed procedure; it also requires the capability to immediately read the face and body language of your audience. The ability to read face and body language lets you interpret and respond to another person’s nonverbal communication style with amazing accuracy.

Are you someone who cares about other people? Are you among the first to notice if someone is upset? Do you like to help those

in need around you? Are you someone who often thinks of other’s needs before your own?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you are probably a person with a lot of empathy. When you are someone who has a lot of empathy it can be difficult to learn how to have both healthy connections and healthy boundaries. Yet, both are required in order to enjoy your life and not burn out as a caring, empathic person. Empathy increases your ability to feel exquisite joy and deep connection to life. It also increases your capacity to feel everything else – which can include pain, confusion, frustration, and fear.

The key for keeping your capacity to receive life fully - without becoming drained - is in knowing how to take care of yourself so that you stay energized. Many people with high empathy find their attention often goes externally to helping others. They may even get most of their self-esteem from how well they can help those in need around them. Noticing what is happening around us is not the issue. The problem is when we lose our ability to sense what is going on inside ourselves because of the habit of paying more attention to what others need.

In simple terms, do you know how to turn your attention inward? Often it comes down to habits – what were you rewarded for in your family growing up? If you were rewarded for taking care of everyone else, it was often at the expense of taking care of yourself. In order to know what you need, it is necessary to know how to sense what is going on inside yourself. Do you know what your needs are? Do you think it is somehow selfish or self-centered to pay attention to your own needs?

What we are discovering in today’s world is that with the stress we all encounter on a daily basis, it is paramount that we learn to take care of ourselves. The airlines have it right – you must put your own oxygen mask on first before helping those in the seat next to you. If you don’t, there will be no one to help the child or the person in need beside you. It runs counter to how most of us were raised. Yet when we know how to fill our own containers, it gives us a lot more to offer the world around us. Our gifts are more fully and easily expressed.

The other interesting fact about this is that when you feel good and energized it makes you more effective and often more efficient. Have you ever noticed that when you are tired or frazzled you make more mistakes? Research has shown this to be true across all professions, not to mention our private lives.

There are distinct skills in how to listen to your inner wisdom that can be taught and learned. I have been gathering these skills from many different sources for a number of years. At first, I primarily taught healthcare professionals. But today more and more people are realizing the importance of these abilities.

So how do we learn the skills of staying full and energized? Can anyone learn these? Absolutely!

First, allow yourself to slow down and take your attention inward. Look at what’s going on inside of you. You may need to partially or fully close your eyes. Simply notice what is happening inside your body with no judgment. Whatever shows up is fine.

Once you are paying attention inside, notice sensations, intuitive hits, and physical awareness that is new or familiar. Register it all with a neutral mind. Be curious. You are simply drinking in your experience – it may offer you important information that only your inner landscape can give you.

Next allow yourself to feel the underside of your body. If you are sitting, feel your body on the surface you are resting on. Feel the bottoms of your feet on the floor. Allow you awareness to drop underneath of you into the earth. With gravity you are connected to the earth all the time – so feel it!

Once you are aware of this connection, allow yourself to soak up nurturing energy from this connection with the earth. Like a sponge in a clear pool of water, simply allow nourishing sensations to begin to fill you up at a pace that works for you. What would that feel like? Do your best to feel it as well as see it – and take your time.

When you are ready to move on, notice how you feel compared with when you started this inner inquiry. You have taken the first steps to full body presence. Over time, this simple practice will help you develop a fuller sense of trust and confidence in yourself and the world. Enjoy!

Have you recently had a wake-up call in your personal life? Do you recognize that, on a planetary level, there are signs all around that we need to heal ourselves and change the outer conditions of our world? Amidst continuing violations of civil rights, accelerating conflicts among nations, and severe economic issues, humanity is experiencing a collective time of crisis. Never on our planet have we needed to awaken our consciousness more than now.

Many healers and teachers are awakening to the healing power of shamanic consciousness and are discovering ways to synthesize the timeless wisdom of the ancients, as well

as more contemporary philosophies. The Shamanic Breathwork™ Process merges the older Scorpio mysteries of death and rebirth with newer downloads from the Aquarian energies of peace, love, and inner wisdom. We are now being called to embrace and unite these two paradigms, incorporating both of their gifts into our present-day lives. This approach of both/and, rather than either/or, honors ancient traditions, yet also honors the path of direct experience that is governed by the heart’s wisdom. We are becoming co-creators in the now and, as present-day shamanic beings, helping to envision and invent the future, rather than becoming a

passive byproduct of it. Shamanic consciousness calls upon all of our inner energies and wisdom, as well as those of the collective consciousness, archetypal forces, power animals, spiritual guides, and God/Goddess to illuminate the highest path. In the Shamanic Breathwork™ process we consciously create the alchemical sacred space to allow an individual’s soul to resonate with his or her core truth. From this place of soul resonance, the person is able to follow that inner truth, blending it with higher energies and forces, in the quest to connect to the natural and spirit worlds.

The time to heal is now, the time to remember who we really are is now, and the time to take our creative healing vision back to our communities is now. The motivation for awakening the shaman within is to bring more depth and richness into our lives, and to be able to shift from outer authority to the inner wisdom of the individual soul’s journey. The impetus to awaken the inner shaman is to discover who we really are and to explore the bigger questions in life, such as, “What are we here to do?” My personal answer to this question is that we are here to live a much bigger story than the one we have been unconsciously playing out in the past. To live a bigger story from a spiritual perspective requires not only a call, but a willingness to awaken to the bigger picture of who we really are. Sometimes there is a vague sense that there is something larger—a longing for connection and remembering our deeper purpose. This is our first phase of awakening and often occurs in response to a trauma or disappointment, such as addiction, divorce, illness, loss of a career, or a mental or spiritual crisis. Sometimes we are more proactive in our spiritual search to discover who we are beyond ego, but in my experience, it’s rare. In this age of consumerism it has become our nature to stay distracted and hide out in our comfort zone. Most of us become proactive in our need for change only after turbulent times awaken our longing for something more. Having to deal with critical issues pushes us to awaken to the deeper aspects of the soul’s true path. Traditional psychotherapy serves a specific purpose and is sometimes an important aspect of our journey, but it is definitely not the whole journey. Often it puts us back in the box, a process somewhat akin to trying to put a baby back in the womb. For many of us, staying rooted in traditional therapy is just a postponement of facing and embracing our deeper spiritual issues. On some level it feels safer and more comfortable to stay asleep and disconnected by being a couch potato, compulsively watching TV, engaging in addictive behavior, losing ourselves in relationships, or otherwise engaging in activities that dull the mind and numb consciousness. In order to awaken our inner shaman, we need a crack in our outer armor and a willingness to step outside the box. We need to know that there is something going on beneath everything. We need to resonate with that deep wellspring of knowledge that flows within us. If we can consider this possibility, then we are ready for the amazing discovery of our true nature.

When this happens, we send a spiritual message to the universe saying, “I am ready to surrender to something beyond my human ego.” In this way, we open to divine assistance from God, Goddess, a Higher Power, or whatever we envision as being sacred and capable of transforming our lives. When we communicate this willingness and readiness to the Great Mystery and what we hold as sacred, we are saying that we are willing to transform and be receptive to something bigger than our smaller, everyday personas. We are calling in the collective, eternal wisdom of the Divine and moving from I to We.

When we surrender in this way, we find that synchronistic things begin to happen in our lives according to divine providence. We can trust that we are experiencing energetic attunements with the universe when we

begin to see coincidental resonances—in books, on TV, and in conversations in our everyday lives. These synchronistic events hold within them the visible reassurance that our inner shaman has heard our call.

A question often asked is, “How long will it take to awaken the shaman within?” The answer is that this is a path of ongoing discovery and enlightenment. Your calling is to stay awake to the synchronistic events that are happening all around you, because when you are truly ready to awaken the shaman within, the way will magically open before you.

CANCERJune 21 – July 22

Get ready to thrive this July as the new moon in your sign signals a fresh start. Tap into the lunar energy and set a new course for your goals and wishes. Brainstorm your way to success. You need open communications, as next month misunderstandings could arise. Clarify your thoughts and words; do not assume people know where you are coming from. When it comes to your friendships continue the together theme.

LEOJuly 23 – August 22

This July, think safety when you drive. When dealing with difficult neighbors, walk away rather than make the problem worse. Leo women, pamper yourselves. Relationships are looking good for couples, but single Leos should be wary of those coming into your life. August sees recent events reaching a climax, as unexpected events could happen in your life, a job issue could be at stake or a family matter. Birthday time is a red letter day!

VIRGOAugust 23 – September 22

You sparkle from the 10th onwards as Venus travels in your sign. You will be at your most attractive and be able to charm everyone into seeing things from your point of view. Use your intuition and soft sell to increase the odds of success. August sees you taking a break even if it’s only for a day or two. Kick back, relax, and enjoy your leisure time. E-mails in August should be re-read before sending. LIBRASeptember 23 – October 22

SCORPIOOctober 23 – November 21

Changes within the workplace may or may not directly affect your job. It may be that you’re simply asked to take on added responsibilities. Use this to your advantage. Think carefully if offered a job elsewhere as it could end as quickly as it begins. Socializing brings new people and new energy into your life in August. Romance, children, and leisure time are your main focus. The hot summer weather has you thinking life is good again.

SAGITTARIUSNovember 22 – December 21

July’s unusual star alignment could end a friendship or dating relationship, or may have you cutting

ties with a group. If you are a parent, you will want to monitor your children’s

activities and get to know your children’s friends. Be cautious

with speculation as it could be a big loss more than a win.

There is tension involved when lending someone

money this August. Make sure to protect your financial security. Travel and adventure lead to excitement mid-month. CAPRICORNDecember 22 – January 19

Changes may be on the horizon; possibly

a domestic or career change or both, and

perhaps thoughts of relocating. Perhaps it is

better to stay put instead. It is a great time for a romantic

holiday or family trip. Couples are now on the same wavelength,

for singles, a new romance. In August, flashes of insight see you planning ahead as

you turn inward for answers. New money trends are on the horizon and better times lie ahead.

AQUARIUSJanuary 20 – February 18

People will be receptive to you and your requests now. Someone you meet around the 22nd will be a lucky charm. August sees you gaining new insights into what motivates you and what holds you back. This month is also good for money matters.

PISCESFebruary 19 – March 20

Finances could take a downward spiral: a drop in income and problems with credit issues. Safeguard valuables and check your credit reports for errors. July 11th, the new moon energizes your leisure time highlighting romance, creativity, and meeting with friends. The sun ushers in a new cycle on July 25th. August sees you scrambling to keep up with everything. The month favors a job hunt for a new position, and resumes you send out bring encouraging news.

ARIESMarch 21 – April 19

Change will surround a long term relationship (personal or professional). Only you can know what is right for you, but keep in mind that you could regret a snap decision so make sure to plan ahead. Your social life will keep you on-the-go. You cherish special moments with children, a date, or partner. July sees you make a great career connection while socializing. Events that begin in July come to a conclusion in August, filling your non- working hours with relaxing activities. Time spent with young people is good for your soul.

TAURUSApril 20 – May 20

Take time off for a weekend in July, relax with a full treatment at a day spa or spend a night at a hotel. Family relationships are in an upbeat period all month. Although your job situation is stressful, take advantage of career opportunities. A move or new home is on the horizon. August sees your work-life picking up. Make sure to take care of your health and wellness now, especially any on-going issues you may have. A hobby could turn into a ‘cash cow.’ Considering a short term course of study to get up to speed in the latest technology in your career field pays off rich dividends.

GEMINIMay 21 – June 20

If you are a parent, keep a close eye on your children this month and get to know their friends, especially if you have teens. A new friendship or dating relationship will bring you much enjoyment and relationships with relatives are very upbeat. Finances move into a more positive cycle now. August sees you impressing the decision makers and reinforcing your position; what you do now could pay off very well. Set your sights high and listen to the grapevine.

The BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf has led to the largest

environmental disaster in American history and has been met with much government planning but comparatively few private sector initiatives. When confronted with such an enormous catastrophe it would seem basic to create incentives for industrious Americans to remove the oil from the sea and the shorelines. In an unprecedented step, Constitutional attorney Jonathan W. Emord proposes Federal and State governments establish clean-up funds (into which private donors could make tax deductible contributions) that will pay any party who delivers a barrel of spilled oil to a shore side verification site. Emord states: ‘’The essential problem with those who are governing the clean-up is that they think so little of private initiative that they distrust their ability to solve cataclysmic problems. They insist on government planned interventions under bureaucratic and military supervision which, given the breadth of this problem, will never succeed in saving the Gulf ecosystem from the damage that will likely last for decades. That outcome need not be.’’ What does this mean? Rather than have a comparatively limited and anemic government controlled clean-up effort,

the approach Emord recommends would unleash a mass of jobs and humanity against the problem, the likes of which would equal the magnitude of the catastrophe. Jonathan W. Emord, principal of Emord and Associates is one of the nation’s leading free speech attorneys. He has defeated the Food and Drug Administration seven times in Federal court, more times than any other attorney in history. He is the 2007 recipient of the Cancer Control Society’s Humanitarian Award and is the only non-scientist ever appointed to the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (vice-chair). Congressman Ron Paul says, “All freedom-loving Americans are in debt to Jonathan Emord for his courtroom [victories.]” Formerly an attorney in the Reagan Administration’s Federal Communications Commission, Emord has practiced law in Washington for over twenty-five years. He is routinely consulted by industry, Congress, and the media on regulatory issues that affect health freedom. He is the author of

Whether taking an early morning hike to the Mariposa Grove to contemplate the growth of the famous giant Sequoias, or driving to an overlook to view a photographer’s paradise of the Yosem-ite Valley, Half Dome and other natural rock formations, the Si-erras are overwhelmingly breathtaking everywhere you look. If you’re planning a photography trip, make your plans, and then

plan on extending them for a couple of days. John Muir explained the photographer’s mind when he said, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the uni-verse.” This is how Yosemite makes you feel, as you try to focus on just one of the many gifts that nature so abundantly gives here.

HistoryIn 1861, Galen Clark first entered the Mariposa Grove and was so impressed that he spent the rest of his life guiding visitors among these giants and urging for their pres-ervation. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln paused during the Civil War to set aside the Mari-posa Grove and Yosemite Valley as a pro-tected state reserve “for the pleasuring of the people.” Along with John Muir, Galen Clark was instrumental in Yosemite’s preservation, and it was him that the Galen Clark Tree was named for, now a living memorial which bears his name.

Clark lived to see Yosemite National Park es-tablished in 1890, when Muir and his Sierra Club continued to lobby the government and influential people for its creation, and the grove was incorporated into the park in 1906.

Nestled just two miles from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park, Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite offers easy access to Yosemite’s most alluring at-tractions and all of the conveniences and services expected of a luxury resort property… and they care.

Owned and operated by one of the world’s leading hospitality and food service providers, Delaware North Companies, Tenaya Lodge has imple-mented the GreenPath® program to ensure environmental responsibility in the area.

When talking with staff members, from food servers to managers, and everyone in between, you get the feeling that everyone truly believes in what they’re doing. The Green Path program isn’t just a corporate policy set in place to jump on the “green” bandwagon, but truly a program that other corporations can follow to be environ-mentally responsible. Tenaya truly sets the bar high in eco-travel by using green building materials, participating in the Seafood Watch program, making it easy to recycle throughout the property, using biodeisel vehicles, and so much more.

At Tenaya, no detail is overlooked in keeping the environment in tact, while pro-viding the most amazing service you’ll find anywhere. Tenaya Lodge should be the standard by which all hotels measure their attentiveness, which makes for an enjoy-able stay. You can’t ask for anything more when you combine eco-friendly, plush accomodations, friendly service, and a wonderous adventure awaiting you every time you step outside your room.

Quick Fact Although the road to the Mariposa Grove is closed until mid-late May, it is only a two mile hike from the park’s south en-trance, making Tenaya Lodge the ideal place to stay for a visit to this area.

Tenaya Lodge in Spring

To experience Yosemite’s waterfalls and magnificent wildflowers, guests must visit the area after the peak runoff begins in April and before the summer heat leaves the waterfalls dry. Those wishing to experi-ence the assortment of wildflowers must take ad-vantage of the much shorter viewing window, as the flowers are only in bloom from late February to May.

Green tip from Tenaya

Say goodbye to sticky notes!Next time you need to jot a note or leave yourself a reminder to drop off expense reports, head to the computer before grabbing a pen and sticky note.

Novell GroupWise, Delaware North’s preferred e-mail provider, has several tools that can help you stay organized and on top of your day-to-day tasks.

For example, let’s say you need to remember to call a colleague at 2:30. Rather than jot a note and stick it on your phone, set up a time delayed e-mail. These e-mails can be sent to oneself at a specific time. For this example, you may set it up to arrive at 2:15. However, emailscan be scheduled hours, days and weeks in advance to help ensure you never forget to do something again.

To set up a time-delayed e-mail, use the following steps:

1. Open a new e-mail.2. Set yourself as both the sender and recipient.3. Type the appropriate message in the message field.4. Select the “Send Options” tab.5. In the right column there is a “Delay Delivery” feature which will enable associates to select the day and time the e-mail will be delivered.6. Send. The benefits of time-delayed e-mails include reduced paper waste, cost savings and less clutter in one’s office space.

WaterfallsThe ebb and flow of seasons are greatly reflected in the waterfalls of Yosemite. Fed from snow fields, waterfalls can be found foaming from the sheer cliffs.

Perhaps the most prominent of the Yosemite Valley waterfalls is Brid-alveil Fall, which is the waterfall seen from the Tunnel View viewpoint at the east end of the Wawona Tunnel. When photographing this waterfall up close, make sure to bring a waterproof jacket and protect your gear, as a light wind may blow the brisk water heavily onto the viewpoint from the valley floor. Wet or dry, it’s definitely worth it to walk the trail to the falls for another amazing view.

Geology 10110 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada start-ed to be uplifted by the vertical movement along the Sierra fault, tilting and increasing the gradient of western-flowing streams. The streams consequently ran faster, cutting their valleys more quickly.

About 15,000 years ago marked the end of a two million year period of glaciations, when the major excavation and shaping of Yosem-ite Valley and other canyons in the area took place. The results were the creation of the long, deep valleys we see today.

Quick FactGranite domes such as Sentinel Dome and Half Dome (right) rise 3,000 and 4,800 feet (910 and 1,500 m), respectively, above the valley floor. Yosemite Valley makes up only one percent of the park area, but this is where most travelers arrive and stay.

The Ahwahnee Hotel is not to be missed when visiting the Yosemite Valley. Reminiscent of an era gone by, the hotel still retains its majestic environment, boasting large gathering halls, and fireplaces. Its architectural design is simple, yet still impressive by today’s standards, as it blends in with the natural surroundings. Yosemite Falls and Glacier point can be viewed from its windows. Visiting the Dining Hall is a breathtaking experience in itself, as is contemplating the famous Christmas parties from the past with Ansel Adams and friends. ~

Quick FactThe Ahwahnee Hotel opened in 1927 and was designated a Natural Historic Landmark in 1987. The Ahwahnee has been the destination of royalty and presidents, and even served as a US Navy hospital during World War II.
