Welcome to new members The Scallymag We are very pleased to welcome The

Scallymag to the HTCPL.

The Scallymag is a free quarterly magazine

aimed at parents and carers of children

aged 0-11. It is distributed directly through

primary schools in north Huddersfield and is

also available at a number of family

orientated venues throughout the wider

Kirklees area.

The magazine includes regular pre-school

and out-of-school diary pages of what is

taking place for children in the local area, as

well as a ‘What’s On’ guide. Two full page

‘Out and About’ features are included in

every issue and are written from the honest

perspective of an average family seeking an

affordable and enjoyable day out.

Every issue is packed full of useful articles

from school admissions and appeal

procedures, childcare features, health,

family law matters, news, a literacy page

courtesy of The Children’s Bookshop in

Lindley and information on family focused

businesses in Huddersfield and beyond.

The magazine runs a front cover art compe-

tition in every issue where one local school,

nursery or playgroup is asked if their chil-

dren could design a picture for the front

page.

Editor Elaine Jinks-Turner explained: “I am

keen that The Scallymag becomes an

integral part of the communities it serves.

To achieve this, The Scallymag supports a

number of local initiatives to ensure that

essential information about services for

families and children reaches the right

audience. The results of this approach

speak for themselves with a loyal and

growing stream of followers on Twitter and

Facebook. You can follow The Scallymag on

Twitter @Scallymaghudds and ‘Like’ us on

Facebook.”

Having met with members of HTCPL to dis-

cuss working together in order to promote

the forthcoming Huddersfield Food and

Drink Festival Elaine explained:” I was

impressed by the community spirit that

existed amongst the business community in

Huddersfield and the willingness with which

they helped young businesses to make their

mark.

“I joined the HTCPL because I would like to

connect with a range of other businesses

and spread the word about The Scallymag

so that its popularity as the local family

magazine of choice continues to grow.”

We are very pleased to welcome Temujin

Restaurant back to the HTCPL.

Based in Milnsbridge and with a second

restaurant in Sowerby Bridge, Temujin has

been in business since 1999 and employs 20

staff.

Owner David Johnston said: “We specialise

in stir-fry which is an exciting, unique,

healthy and entertaining way of eating.

We can cater extensively for Vegetarians

and those with eating disorders such as

gluten or wheat intolerance. “

David added: “The stir-fry is fast and cooked

before your eyes on a row of ‘up turned

shields’. Customers can create millions of

different stir-fries from our extensive

selection of ingredients including meat,

seafood, vegetables, Tofu, Quorn and exotic

meats such as ostrich and kangaroo when

available. Customers are invited to return

to the buffet as often as they wish but we

do hope they’ll leave room for one of our

delightful desserts!”

Asked why he decided to join the HTCPL

David explained that he wished to get

involved with the networking opportunities

and as a regular stallholder at the

Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival he

Welcome to new members Hinchliffe’s Farm Shop And Restaurant We are delighted to welcome Hinchliffe’s

Farm Shop and Restaurant to the HTCPL

Hinchliffe’s is a family run business with

three generations still actively involved in

its day to day running. The business

comprises of a Farm Shop with an award

winning butchery and a very busy

Restaurant attached.

Partner Simon Hirst explains: “We try to

showcase not only our own home fed beef,

prize winning pies & sausages, home cured

bacon but also the very fine produce from

the surrounding areas. Promoting quality

local produce has always been a key to our

success.

“The Restaurant also promotes our own

produce as well as good local food and not

surprisingly Hinchliffe’s steak features quite

strongly on the menu as well as other

modern British classics.

“We were the very first Farm Shop in

Britain – pioneering the now very popular

concept which has swept the country over

the past few years.”

Asked why they joined the HTCPL Simon

added: “Hinchliffe’s origins began in

Huddersfield Town Centre where it had it’s

very first butchers shop on Manchester

Street (which was near was is now the bus

station at Springwood ) followed by a

second shop at Folly Hall and also a Mobile

Butchers shop too, which did ‘the rounds’

about the town.

“Although we have not had a shop in the

town centre since the 1970’s when we

moved to our farm shop in Netherton, we

still have a strong affinity with Huddersfield

and want to see it thrive and prosper.

“We think that the Huddersfield Food and

Drink Festival is a fantastic way of

showcasing not only the local produce of

the area but also Huddersfield itself, so we

are proud to come ‘home’ every summer

and be part of the great event.”

Robertson Baxter, a well-known

Huddersfield firm of Independent Financial

Advisors has been awarded the Business of

the Month prize for March.

The business was established in 2007 by

directors Stephen Baxter and Greg

Robertson. Having worked together at

HSBC in Huddersfield they had a vision to

provide high quality financial advice to

clients across Yorkshire supported by an

on-going support service which was second

to none, a situation which was not possible

in their existing roles.

Robertson Baxter is not the average high

street IFA. Their market place is high net

worth individuals; the owners and families

of small and medium sized businesses and

partners of professional services firms, as

well as charities and trustees. An average

client has £750,000 invested and managed

by Robertson Baxter in a client base which

is predominantly West and North Yorkshire

but with others as far as London and

Cheshire.

The business has grown from April 2007

with no clients to now managing £100m of

client funds in just 6 years, looking after

only 161 clients to achieve this, which is

considerably less than the thousands of

clients that most IFA firms need to look

after to achieve this level of funds under

management. This allows the firm to

deliver a level of personal service which is

hard to achieve for most large IFA’s.

The judges were particularly impressed by

the level of care and attention that

Robertson Baxter had put into their

Business of the Month application.

Director Stephen Baxter said “We are

genuinely thrilled to have received this

award which we view as further recognition

of the strength of our brand and reputation

in Huddersfield and further afield. This

award is for the whole team at Robertson

Baxter who work every day to ensure that

our clients receive first class, honest and

transparent financial planning.”

The Business of the Month Award is run in

association with Mid Yorkshire Chamber of

Commerce and UKTI. It is open to firms in

Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Nando's chicken is so addictively tasty it's

PERi-PERi chicken is also ideal as part of a

the NEW Avocado and Green Bean Salad a

great addition to the menu. It’s delicious

and nutritious, and at 270 calories (without

leaves, a spicy Tamarind

dressing and a blend of eight different seeds

– and adding the PERi-PERi chicken just

finishes off this perfect salad. “

KIRKLEES CONSORTIUM RECEVIES

£2M CREATIVE PEOPLE AND PLACES A consortium of partners in Kirklees, led by

the Lawrence Batley Theatre, have been

reserved a £2 million grant from Arts

Council England, as part of their Creative

People and Places programme.

The Creative People and Places programme

focuses on parts of the country where

peoples' involvement in the arts is

significantly below the national average and

takes a new approach by allowing

communities and grass roots organisations

to play a leading part in inspiring others to

get involved with the arts.

The Kirklees bid was made by a consortium

of the Lawrence Batley Theatre, We Do

(formerly Open Art), Batley Festival Group

and Kirklees Council, and was supported by

a whole range of artists and organisations.

The programme, called Making A Scene

seeks to establish a vibrant creative culture

and radically develop arts provision -

particularly in the north of the district.

Central to the project is the involvement of

local people and organisations.

Over the next six months the Kirklees con-

sortium will undergo a further development

stage, creating a business plan for the £2

million grant, upon which the reserved

money will be awarded.

Eleven consortiums over the country have

been successful in their Creative People and

Places bids, and have been awarded in total

just over £18 million over the next three

years.

Victoria Firth, Director of the LBT, says: “A

grant of this scale will enable us to make a

real difference to a great many people in

Kirklees. We will bring the best in live

performance to people’s doorsteps, to the

places they go everyday as well as

surprising new locations. Most importantly,

local communities will shape the

programme, working side by side with

artists, to realise their own ideas and

creative ambitions.”

Cluny Macpherson, Regional Director of

Arts Council England, says: “I’m delighted

that people in Kirklees will be benefiting

from this investment. Creative People and

Places is a unique programme that, for the

first time at such a large scale, puts arts

provision directly in the hands of

communities, enabling them to commission

and put on the arts events and creative

activities that they want to see locally”.

As you know, Huddersfield is famous for

making many things from sporting history to

the cloth for David Beckham’s suit at Prince

William and Kate’s wedding. But we want to

find more of these inspirational facts or

stories about The Place To Make It. And

we’d love your help. It’s not just for fun

because we’ve a grand total of £1,000 in

Packhorse Pounds to give away to

Huddersfield Eye’s winning fact-finders over

the coming months.

This month’s theme, fact fans, is history!

With castle hill, an abundance of listed

buildings and the town uniquely becoming

it’s own landlord Huddersfield has a rich

history, but there’s still plenty of scope to

uncover our best history related fact and

win this month’s prize – £200 worth of

Packhorse Pounds. So take to your local

history books, root around on the net or tap

into your memory banks for a chance of

success.

Here’s what we’ve found, can you do any

better?

Victoria Castle situated on Castle Hill

was opened on 24th June 1899 to

celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond

Jubilee.

The first edition of the Huddersfield

and Holmfirth Examiner (now the

Huddersfield DAILY examiner) was

published on Saturday 6th

September 1851.

There are over 200 listed buildings in

and around Huddersfield’s town

centre.

The oldest pub in Huddersfield is

‘The Parish’ formerly known as the

‘The fleece Inn’ and has been trading

since 1720.

Huddersfield ‘bought’ itself in 1920

when it purchased the Ramsden

Estate for £1,333,000; uniquely

making itself it’s own landlord.

Spending your Packhorse Pounds

With £200 to spend in the Packhorse Shop-

ping Centre (at the heart of Huddersfield!),

you could be splashing out on a top brand

watch from Beaverbrooks, a smart new

phone from Carphone Warehouse or a fresh

spring wardrobe from Pink Cadillac and

Peters. With over 30 stores to spend your

Packhorse Pounds in, there’s something to

suit literally everyone.

How to enter

Email your Huddersfield business facts,

along with your full name and telephone

number to [email protected] to

reach us before the competition deadline:

30th June 2013. Alternatively, simply cut out

the entry coupon in the Huddersfield Eye fill

in with your fact, full name, email address

and telephone number and drop it in the

post box outside the Card Factory store in

the Packhorse Centre.

The winner will be announced in the July

issue of Huddersfield Eye.

Game on for a bonus

The best fact or story we receive between

now and the end of August will also win a

fantastic bonus – tickets for a Huddersfield

Town FC home game in September. So make

it your goal to be in it to win it.

Good Luck!

Win £200 Packhorse Pounds

The fourth Upmarket Sunday event will

take place on Sunday 14 July from 10am

until 4pm at the Brook Street market in

Huddersfield.

Stallholders have been expanding each

month and have now almost reached 80

stalls. This new monthly market has

become a firm favourite with the Upmarket

shoppers, who have been returning each

month to buy fresh, local produce,

handmade crafts, antiques and interior

pieces.

Nine new stallholders are joining the

market in June, including:

Painted Elegance based in Huddersfield

which customises and renovate classic

furniture to create a bespoke and romantic

shabby chic look

The Old Bridge Bakery from Holmfirth will

be serving up handmade breads and cakes

Out of Africa selling ethically sourced gift-

ware from Africa

Tea Pot Tea Gifts who specialise in loose

leaf teas and herbal tea infusions, mugs, tea

pockets and tea measure spoons

Joker 666 selling a range of tattoo

accessories and body piercing jewellery

Vintage Cakery who sell afternoon tea

boxes and tea breads

To add to the atmosphere live music is a

feature of the market each month.

There are also free children’s workshops.

Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for

Regeneration said: “each time I have visited

the market there have been new stalls to

see and June looks set to deliver even more

for shoppers to enjoy. This is quickly

establishing itself as a popular monthly

feature, and it’s great to see families

browsing the stalls, listening to music and

taking part in the workshops together, it’s

putting the pleasure back in to shopping.”

Upmarket Sunday takes place on the

second Sunday of every month from

10.00am until 4.00pm
