OLYMPIC TORCH LIGHTS UP VALLEY LODGE

Valley Lodge Staff and Residents were lucky enough to have the Olympic Torch route go right past their home. On Friday 29th June, as the torch made its way to Derby, residents and staff braved the miserable and damp weather to wave their Union Jack flags as the torchbear-er ran past. The home was bustling with excitement as everyone got ready for a once in a lifetime experience. Even Michaela, Ashmere’s artist joined them dressed in her special Union Jack outfit. The road

was closed off outside the home and there were lots of policemen on motorbikes who waved to the residents. Everyone saw the Olympic bus full of torchbearers and all the sponsored lorries. It was all very busy and exciting and then suddenly, it was all gone! Everyone was very pleased they got the chance to see it all happen, it was just a shame it was over so quickly. Memories from my Job!

I used to work as a toilet attendant in a service station. I met all kinds of people such as gentry, popstars, children and lots of pets.Once, whilt I was at work a well to do lady came in holding her baby. She told me she was very unwell and asked if I could hold her baby, I very much obliged. When she had sorted herself out and felt a little better, I handed her back her baby and she asked where to leave the tip. Well, I had never heard of such a thing. She recommended getting a tip jar. As soon as I had a tip jar, I had never seen so much money, I must have been good at my job.Another day, I found an engagement ring, it was the

most sparkly, huge diamond ring I have ever seen. Someone must have really missed the ring so I went to hand it into the security man. He said, ‘Laura, if no one has claimed this ring in 10 days, you can keep it.’ No one came to claim it and I still have the ring all these years later.

West Hallam visit Derby Museum

Residents at West Hallam had a visit to Derby Museum this month. The museum is full of lots of interesting memorabilia and information that residents and staff really enjoyed looking at. The Museum boasts of a ‘Military Gallery’ with stories of local regiments and plenty of wartime relics which prompted a reminiscence session. The museum also had a Archaeology Gallery with 2 Egyptian Mummies which were fascinating. Residents also enjoyed looking at the wildlife section and trying out the ‘time tunnel.’ Laura enjoyed looking at the antlers of animals. The museum staff were very helpful and everyone found it very interesting.

By Kirstie Bowers, West Hallam

Do you have any stories like Laura’s about your previous job? We’d love to hear them. Why not tell the Activities Co-ordinator about them or write them down and hand them in for the newsletter?

POETRY CORNERSee Me

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?Are you thinking, when you look at me --A crabby old woman, not very wise,Uncertain of habit, with far-away eyes,Who dribbles her food and makes no reply,When you say in a loud voice -- “I do wish you’d try.”

Who seems not to notice the things that you do,And forever is losing a stocking or shoe,Who unresisting or not, lets you do as you will,With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.

Is that what you’re thinking, is that what you see?Then open your eyes, nurse, you’re looking at ME...I’ll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still;As I rise at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I’m a small child of ten with a father and mother,Brothers and sisters, who love one another,A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet.Dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet;A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,Remembering the vows that I promised to keep;At twenty-five now I have young of my own,Who need me to build a secure, happy home;

A woman of thirty, my young now grow fast,Bound to each other with ties that should last;At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,But my man’s beside me to see I don’t mourn;At fifty once more babies play ‘round my knee,Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead,I look at the future, I shudder with dread,For my young are all rearing young of their own,And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known;I’m an old woman now and nature is cruel --‘Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body is crumbled, grace and vigor depart,There is now a stone where once I had a heart,But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,And now and again my battered heart swells.

I remember the joys, I remember the pain,And I’m loving and living life over again,I think of the years, all too few -- gone too fast,And accept the stark fact that nothing can last --So I open your eyes, nurses, open and see,Not a crabby old woman, look closer, nurses -- see ME!

This poem was found among the possesions of an elderly lady who died in the geriatric ward of a hospital. No information is available concerning her - who she was or when she died.
