the influence of our pastors, Marty Herron and Sam Horn. The con-

of strength and hope in the midst of trial has influenced this project to

become an intentional tool of discipleship for hurting people.

PSALMSGod’s Refreshing Oasis

The Scriptures often use the metaphor of thirsty pilgrims

searching for cool water to explain our need for God.  As a

river originates from a constantly renewing spring, so the

Psalms are sourced in who God is and provide an eternal,

divine place of refreshment for us.  These thirteen psalms

become places of prayer, clarity and beauty for us as our

spiritual thirst is satisfied with God’s Word.

Although the children of Israel wandered through the

wilderness because of their disobedience, God extended His

gracious, good and guiding hand and allowed them to find

water from a rock (Numbers 20; Psalm 110:7).  Throughout

the Old Testament, God is called “Rock,” and He “protected

and sustained His people.”  I Corinthians 10:4 states that

the Israelites “did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they

drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that

Rock was Christ.”  As the water from the rock physically

refreshed the children of Israel, so Christ is that Rock, and

we are spiritually renewed in Him.

PSALM 105 He Is GoodFrank Hernandez and Jeff Nelson. ©1998 Birdwing Music (ASCAP)/His & Hernandez Music (ASCAP)(Both admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing). All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission.

He is good, He is good.  His love endures forever.Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.He is good, He is good. His loves endures forever.Give thanks for He is good.

For His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds, Give thanks, give thanks to the Lord!

O, give thanks for He is good.

Psalm 105 speaks of the

history of God ’s faithfulness to His

children, while Psalm 106 speaks of the history of

Israel ’s failures. Psalm 106 con-fesses the character of God—“He is good.” The psalm both starts and

finishes with “Praise ye the Lord,” and the reason for our praise is repeated throughout the psalm: “O give thanks for He is Good!”

God remains good & faithful despite our sinfulness!

Psalms 105 & 106 are known as the twin psalms. How to use this Project

It was clear to both of us as we recorded these songs that God had directed and enabled us throughout this recording project. The truth of these psalms is what fueled our efforts while writing and recording. They ministered to our hearts in very deep and personal ways. It is our desire to package these songs for you in a way that you can receive a blessing from the Lord. We would like to offer the following steps as a process that you can follow to dig a little deeper into God’s refreshing oasis. Kevin & Jonathan

1. Choose a psalm and read it through a few times.2. Read the commentary printed inside the booklet.3. Listen to the track while following the printed lyrics.4. Write down in your journal what God reveals about Himself.5. Meditate on that truth and rest in His promises.

Dig deeper into

these psalms by trying these steps with this CD.

PSALM 95 Come, Let Us Worship Words and Music by Fernando Ortega. ©2006 Curb Songs/Cerdo Verde Songs. All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission.

Come, let us worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord, our Maker.Come, let us worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

He is our God, He is our God; We are the people of His pasture. He is our God, He is our God; We are the sheep of His hand.

Come, let us worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord, our Maker.Worship the Lord in holiness; Let the whole earth stand in awe.He will come to judge the world in righteousness and truth.

Psalm 95 is my goal! All

other oases have been but stopping

points on this journey. I am the

pilgrim coming into the city, whose

builder and maker is God. I find

my home and place there as I bow

down before the Lord. And when I

look up into the face of the One before

whom I bow, I discover a familiar

face -- One that has been walking with

me on the path the entire time. The One who

knew exactly where the oases were placed and who

shared bread and water on the pathway. To Him, I bow down -- He is my

God, but He is also my Shepherd. He is our God, and we are His sheep,

and we are finally home.

This psalm speaks of the awakening of my soul to the truth about my desperate condition. Without water from Your well, I have no strength for the journey or shield from the heat of the day. So, I wake desperately aware of my need for soul-water, and I cry out early in the morning for You to lead me there.

Without Your help, I perish, and

so I pray desperately, yet confidently,

to the One who has promised His

righteousness.

PSALM 28 A Morning PrayerWords and Music by Kevin Inafuku and Jonathan Albright. ©2009 Harvest Recordings. All Rights Reserved.

O Lord, You are my Rock. I call to You for help.Unless You give me mercy, I know that I will fail.Lord, listen to my prayer; don’t hide Yourself from me.I lift my hands to You, and with all my heart, I sing. You are my Strength; You are my Shield;I will praise Your name. You are my Savior; You are my Shepherd;I will trust Your name.I will trust Your name.

PSALM 139 Search Me, Know MeWords and Music by Mildred Rainey and Kathryn Scott. ©2003 Vertical Worship Songs

c/o Integrity Media, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission.

Search me, know me;Try me and see ev’ry worthless affection hidden in me;All I’m asking for is that You’d cleanse me, Lord.

Create in me a heart that’s clean; Conquer the pow’r of secret shame;Come wash away the guilty stain of all my sin; Clothe me in robes of righteousness, Cover my nakedness with grace; All of my life before You now I humbly bring.

All of my life before You now I humbly bring; Search me, know me; try me and see.

I draw wonderful strength from the deep truths found here. Psalm 139 records God ’s essential attributes like nowhere

else in Scripture. This confessional psalm reveals great truths of God ’s omniscience (1-6), God ’s omnipresence (7-12) and God ’s omnipotence

(13-18). David cries, “Search me & know me. Search my every moment and search my every action.”

I find comfort in the truth that You know me intimately...

...and that You are ALWAYS in control.

PSALM 90 On Mountains High Words and Music by Michael Neale. ©2005 Integrity’s Praise! Music (BMI) (c/o Integrity Media, Inc.)All Rights Reserved. International Copyright Secured. Used by Permission.

O God, You are the God of all created things; Before the worlds were formed, You knew who I would be;Your ways are higher than the ways of man, So help me trust Your heart as You hold my hand.

On mountains high, I’ll praise Your name; In valleys low, I’ll do the same; As the river runs to find the ocean blue, My heart will always run to find You.

The oldest psalm speaks of God ’s possessions, provisions, promises and power. Moses declares God ’s sovereignty in our lives and the power of His name; He is the Most High (Elyon), the Almighty (Shaddai), the Lord (Jehovah) and God (Elohim). God doesn’t keep us from terrifying situations, but He draws us close to Himself during those times because He knows no one else can deliver us. When we call out to God, He will answer us and be with us in trouble (90:50).

My heart will always run to find You!

My soul finds rest in God alone, My rock and my salvation.A fortress strong against my foes And I will not be shaken.Though lips may bless and hearts may curse And lies like arrows pierce me,I’ll fix my heart on righteousness,I’ll look to Him who hears me.

I set my gaze on God alone And trust in Him completely. With ev’ry day pour out my soul And He will prove His mercy.Though life is but a fleeting breath, A sigh too brief to measure,My King has crushed the curse of death, And I am His forever.

Find rest, my soul, in God alone Amid the world’s temptations; When evil seeks to take a hold, I’ll cling to my salvation.Though riches come and riches go, Don’t set your heart upon them. The fields of hope in which I sow Are harvested in Heaven.

O praise Him, hallelujah, My delight and my reward,Everlasting, never failing, My Redeemer, my God.

I am not alone on the path. There are others going in the opposite direc-

tion who appear to have all they need to enjoy life along the path. They are definitely not righteous! In fact, they oppose

those who are pursuing the path of righteousness. When my waterskin is empty, my supplies are low and my journey has exhausted my strength and my resources, turning and joining those travel-ing the other path is a mighty temptation to this weary, thirsty pilgrim. I wonder if the goal (Your Righteousness) is worth pursuing or if it is even attainable. This oasis helps me focus on where my true rest and riches are found, as I focus on the One who waits for me at the end of the road.

PSALM 51 I RepentWords by Dave Noel. Music by Steve Green and Phil Naish. ©1998 Birdwing Music (ASCAP), Steve Green Music (ASCAP), Meadowgreen Music (ASCAP), Davaub Music (ASCAP) and Jillybird Music (ASCAP). I regret the hours I have wasted And the pleasures I have tasted that you were never in.And I confess that though Your love is in me,It doesn’t always win me when competing with my sin.

And I repent, making no excuses. I repent, no one else to blame. And I return to fall in love with Jesus.  I bow down on my knees and I repent.

I lament the idols I’ve accepted, The commandments I’ve rejected to pursue my selfish end.And I confess I need You to revive me, Put selfishness behind me and take up my cross again.

This psalm shows my need for this water when the barrenness of the wilderness has overcome me and when, like David, sin has dried out my inner strength and I have become like a useless and worn-out wineskin. We who long for righ-teousness have been overcome by unrighteousness. Here at this oasis, we find forgiveness and renewed joy as God washes us, rehydrates our dried-out soul and sets us lovingly back on the path of His Word.

God, there is NO ONE to blame but me... I repent!

I Will Wait for You, My LordPSALM 130 Words and Music by Jonathan Albright and Kevin Inafuku. © 2009 Harvest Recordings. All Rights Reserved.

Out of the depths, I cry to You;Lord, hear my desperate plea.If You would mark my sin,I’d have no hope within,But by Your mercy there is forgiveness.

I will wait on You, Lord, for my hope is in Your Word.More than watchmen wait for morn,I’ll wait for You, my Lord; I will wait for You, my Lord.

I have a hope in You alone;  You heard my desperate plea.  For through Your perfect Son, You show Your steadfast love,And in Your mercy, my heart will trust You.

This psalm speaks of the long and arduous journey that every chastened, forgiven pilgrim is called to undertake as he walks in the way of the Word. Much of that road is dangerous and difficult, and one easily despairs of safety on the way.

This oasis reminds me that waiting on the

Lord MUST become my active practice and not just my passive

attitude toward the journey.

In these deep places, God has hidden marvel-ous truth, designed to

transform me along the way, as I encounter those truths day by day on the difficult pathway.

Still, My Soul, Be StillPSALM 37 & 46 Words and Music by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Stuart Townend.©2009 Thankyou Music. Adm. by worshiptogether.com songs. All Rights Reserved.

Still, my soul, be still and do not fear Though winds of change may rage tomorrow.God is at your side; no longer dread the fires Of unexpected sorrow.

God, You are my God,And I will trust in You and not be shaken.Lord of peace, renew a steadfast spirit Within me to rest in You alone.

Still, my soul, be still; do not be moved By lesser lights and fleeting shadows.Hold onto His ways, with shield of faith Against temptation’s flaming arrows.

Still, my soul, be still; do not forsake the truth You learned in the beginning.Wait upon the Lord, and hope will rise As stars appear when day is dimming.

I continue to see these

oases. I am assured and given confidence that the path I set out on is in fact the right one. Though

small, the water is deep & fresh! When I begin to doubt and wonder, when I am assailed by unexpected sorrow and shaken to my very core, water from this oasis clears my vision and strengthens my resolve to keep walking in the way!

You quiet the fears of my soul and still the doubts of my heart, so that my feet may run swiftly and steadily onward to the goal.

This envelope psalm starts and ends with

the same phrase, “Bless the LORD, O my soul:

and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” In this exquisite poem, God ’s title, Lord Jehovah, appears eleven times, reminding me

that He will support and sustain me. THANK YOU!

David finds hope in his relationship with the Lord.

Although David recognizes his sinfulness and frailty, he celebrates God ’s forgiveness and goodness and calls

on all of God ’s creatures and creation to bless His holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,Bless the Lord and all that is in me, I bless Your holy name;I bless Your name.I will never forget all You’ve done,All my sins You’ve forgiven in love,You redeemed me from death; My diseases You healed,And You crown me with kindness and mercy.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,Bless the Lord and all that is in me, I bless Your holy name;I bless Your name.Bless the Lord, O my soul,I bless Your name.

And I will trust in You alone, And I will trust in You alone, For Your endless mercy follows me, Your goodness will lead me home.

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want.  He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still, still waters, His goodness will lead me home.

He guides my ways in righteousness, And He anoints my head with oil,And my cup, it overflows with joy, I feast on His pure delights.

And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one,For You are with me, And Your rod and staff Are the comfort I need to know.

There is no greater psalm than Psalm 23.

As the shepherd King David brought his sheep to the meandering, placid waters for rest and renewal, so the psalm provides refreshment for me in the desert of my life.

God is the good and great Shepherd that graciously leads us beside the still waters.

PSALM 115 Receive the GloryWords and Music by Bob Kauflin. ©2004 Sovereign Grace Praise (BMI). Sovereign Grace Music, a division of Sovereign Grace Ministries. All Rights Reserved. International copyright secured. North American administration by Integrity Music. International Administration by CopyCare International. Used by Permission.

Not to us, but to Your name alone,Be all the glory, the glory, forever. For Your faithfulness and steadfast love,Receive the glory. The glory belongs to You.

All that we’ve accomplished You have done for us.And any fruit we harvest is a gift from Your hand.We are only jars of clay that hold a priceless treasure,And we exist to bring You pleasure, O God.

Only by Your mercy can we come to You.Though we deserve Your judgment,You have called us by name.So we glory in the cross of Christ that made us Yours forever, That joined our lives together to sing.

When I stumble along this journey of life, people may ask,

“Where is your God now?” Instead of despairing, I can

celebrate because Psalm 115 teaches,

“the Lord has been mindful of me.”

Not to us, Lord... but to YOUR NAME be glory!

PSALM 121 A Psalm of Hope & StrengthWords and Music by Joseph M. Martin. ©2009 by Fred Bock Music Company. All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission.

I will lift my eyes unto the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord my God.I will lift my eyes unto the hills. I will trust in God alone. I will trust in God alone. I will lift my eyes unto the hills.

My help comes from the Lord, The Maker of Heaven and earth.  I will put my trust in God alone. The Lord, Jehovah, never slumbers, The Lord will never let you stumble.  He will keep you safe from all harm.

The Lord will never forsake you.  The Lord is your shade at your right hand.  The sun will not harm you by day, Nor the moon by night.  God will keep your life.

I will lift my eyes unto the hills.  I will lift my eyes unto the hills.  I will trust in God alone. I will lift my eyes unto the hills.

This comes as a needy oasis at the point on the journey where I

have been traveling a long time and I have reached the point where I can’t continue to “talk myself” into staying on the journey. The heat of

the sun has overwhelmed me, and the whole afternoon lies before me. The

barren wilderness stretches out as far forward in the distance as it does

when I look back. I am completely surrounded by wilderness, and that

wilderness is frought with danger on every hand -- this oasis

gives hope and courage to discouraged and frightened

pilgrims.
