A year ago (at just about this time, in fact), I was wondering what God was up to in Slater, Iowa. More than that, I was wondering what my place in that mix might be. I remember feeling a whole spectrum of ‘feels’ — from anxiousness to impatience, excitement to awe. Here we are a year later, and most of you are still here (which is a pretty encouraging sign, actually :). God is good. I’ve been doing some reflecting this week, and I’d just like to say that it’s been a life-giving year at Bethlehem (for me). We’ve made some good progress together— from the website and logo (bulletins, newsletters, and letterhead too) to the successful completion of our first Refresh & Renew effort. We’ve updated our church management system and introduced prayer around the cross (all while eating really well on Wednesday nights). We’ve simplified lock sets, painted, and de-cluttered… we’ve worshiped at midnight and sunrise once more. We’ve laughed together, and we’ve served together... and we’ve shared in the hard stuff too. It’s been a full year, Bethlehem… and now we are blessed to do it again… in some new way. I look forward to journeying with you all a while longer. I thank you for your continued patience and grace as I thank God for the gift of another year in service to Christ — at a place called Bethlehem. Peace my friends, Pastor Nat

From Your BLC Council
It is an exciting time at BLC as our new program year gets ready to kick off. While we can all agree that we hate to see summer slip away, there is something exciting about starting back up with Sunday School, banqueting table, and the other programming that signals a renewed focus and sense of engagement at church. Over the last several months, a team of dedicated volunteers have worked to re-think Sunday School at BLC, and we couldn’t be more excited to share the results of that effort. Sunday School at Bethlehem this year promises to be a rewarding, dynamic experience for kids of all ages and their families. Not only this, this year’s approach offers a variety of ways to engage the Christian education effort as a BLC volunteer. There are opportunities to volunteer as a Sunday School leader or helper —whether you’re interested in serving for only a few Sundays or the whole year. With additional volunteers, this new approach promises to be extremely versatile, sustainable, and (importantly) educational. With regard to Sunday School at BLC, we hope you’ll consider jumping in and getting involved (and yes, as a volunteer, you’ll have plenty of support every step of the way). On a related note, this year’s Sunday School program will offer a “Family Hour” each month as a way to promote family time in service to God and neighbor. Our Family Hour projects will bring families together in creative and fun ways, often in service to neighbors in need. In being intentional about family time as it relates to faith in action, BLC’s Sunday School hour will put faith into practice in a new way. Here again, volunteers of all ages are welcome to help plan and guide Family Hour activities. With the completion of the “Refresh & Renew” project, BLC has set the stage for an ongoing emphasis on continued improvement. When we sold the parsonage last year, we promised that we would be very thoughtful and diligent in our efforts to re-invest that money in a responsible and appropriate way. A special committee was formed, and this group has continued to focus on several ideas related to this church and its ministry. Ultimately, the front steps and retaining wall project has emerged as one of BLC’s most pressing priorities. While bids have been obtained, the committee has determined that the best course of action is to wait until next spring to move forward with those improvements. The committee believes that starting this project next spring will ensure that the work will be done right. The additional lead time allowed by a spring start date additionally allows for further review of the overall design and scope of the project. Finally, we couldn’t be more pleased with the success of our first golf outing. Over 80 people were in attendance (50+ golfers and 30+ non-golfers) and we had a great afternoon of good fun. While this event successfully raised extra dollars to support BLC’s ongoing programming, the real objective was to host an event that promoted continued fellowship and connection. Forging these important relationships and friendships through events such as the golf outing is so important. In a world that seems to be filled with fear, uncertainty, and dissension, we believe that the church is the perfect outlet to promote unity, friendships, grace, and love. We intend to build on the momentum that was created by the golf outing so stay tuned – we are planning some other fun social events and everyone will be encouraged to join in the fun. Looking Back
Now Hiring
Just a reminder: BLC is still looking to recruit an
awesome church secretary. This position is a part-
time position, and it’s really more of a calling than a
job. If you love the church and you’re feeling called
to something “more,” this is that kind of
opportunity. BLC is looking for someone with strong
communication skills, creative ability, and great
people skills. The hours are flexible. The work is
meaningful, and Bethlehem is a special place. For
more information, contact Pastor Nat at 515-228-
3933 or email
always, your prayers (for
Bethlehem, for the person God
is calling to BLC at this time) are
appreciated.
New Church Directory
Special thanks to all who have submitted an updated
photo for the new directory! For those who haven’t
yet submitted a photo, it’s not too late (in fact, we’ll
make it easy on you). One idea: take a photo after
worship this Sunday. Seriously — just find a good
spot at BLC (in the sanctuary, gathering room, or
outside), and take a selfie! Another option: join us
on Rally Sunday, where volunteers will be on hand
to take your photo for you! We’ll continue to accept
photos by email through mid September (because
the goal here is an updated directory that’s
representative of BLC). To submit you photo, simply
email it to [email protected]. Again, we
appreciate your participation in this effort!
A Great First Outing!
On Sunday, August 18th,
Bethlehem Lutheran hosted its
first golf outing at Ballard Golf &
CC (and the golf course almost ran out of carts)! A
huge THANK YOU to the members of our planning
team and a dedicated cast of sponsors, community
partners, and our friends at Ballard CC. In total, this
inaugural event raised more than $2,500 for the
benefit of BLC and its mission. More than that, it
was a full day of fun, friendly banter, and yes—
“grace” (in the form of a 4 person ‘best ball’
format). Thank you to all who participated, planned,
sponsored, or spectated! It was a great way to wind
down the last days of summer, and we’re already
looking forward to next year!

Approved Council Minutes (July, 2019) Bethlehem Lutheran Church Council Monthly Meeting Tuesday, July 16, 2019 6:00 PM Church Basement
1. Welcome/Roll Call – Brenda Neville Present: Bill Britton, Stacey Cleverley, Mat Emery, Mike Helland, Ben Johnson, Barbara Mallon, Brenda
Neville, Pastor Nat Bothwell Excused: Rita Thorson, Jim Christensen, Bill White, Lori McCasland 2. Devotions: Brenda Neville Psalms 121 3. June Minutes Review/Approval Motion for approval Bill Britton, seconded by Mike Helland. Motioned carried. 4. Monthly Financial Review - Bill Britton • Receipts: We are up year-to-date by $5600. We continue to be about $10,000 behind on income vs.
expenses but overall giving is up slightly and hopefully this trend will continue. • $16,000 in Building Maintenance Fund that could be considered for another keypad on the east side of
the church (elevator door). • Quarterly investment report/summary was presented to the council for their review. • BLC has received $150,000 from Dunlap estate. This money was earmarked specifically for investment in
the “church home”. For now it has been invested until the council determines the next step. Forming a committee to take on this project has been suggested since the model worked good w/the Parsonage proceeds. A formal announcement will also be made to the congregation. This gift is something that needs to be celebrated. Follow up/Thank you to the family will be implemented.
• Motion for approval Mat Emery, seconded by Stacey Cleverley. 5. Church Property Update • R & R Update: The project is nearing completion and response has been very favorable from the
congregation. Official dedication ceremony will take place in August before the BLC program year. Final touches to be made w/the display cabinet and wall display.
• A detailed spreadsheet will be prepared outlining total dollars in and total dollar spent – still waiting for some invoices – flooring, additional furniture pieces, etc.
• JGs Furniture systems will be delivering final pieces and will be taking some of the old furniture with them. 10 additional nesting chairs along with two white tables for kitchen were purchased at the last trip to “used furniture” warehouse – these items not part of R&R project will come from building maintenance account instead as FYI.
• Front Steps Update: Parsonage Committee and Mike Helland are in the process of getting bids for steps and the retaining wall. Two or three bids for each project. Parsonage proceeds committee will review
7
Looking Back | Continued (Council Minutes)
bids and make formal recommendation to the council for approval. Still hoping to complete these projects before winter if possible.
6. Office Update • IT Service: Upgrading and updating current WiFi at BLC. This will be a big improvement and will allow for
more uses – video streaming, etc. • Keys: Church Secretary will have keys and people that need the keys for something will be able to check
them out from the secretary. Information will be shared w/the congregation. • Key pad for the elevator door: This continues to be a priority. Ben and Bill will work on alternatives that
are cost-effective as well as giving easy access in the East side of the church. 7. General/Miscellaneous Updates • Sunday School Team has met and have redesigned the format for the Sunday School program and have
created a calendar. There will be an emphasis on involving volunteers for the family hour, activities, and snacks. 46 students are expected this fall. Committee is now working on curriculum and securing volunteers.
• Vacation Bible School runs July 22-28. It is hosted by Bethlehem this year and co-managed with the Methodist Church. Special thanks to Jess Denner for organizing the VBS.
• Golf Outing August 18: This is a new fundraiser for outreach programs as well as an opportunity people to socialize. Our goal is to have 50 players signed. Businesses are being contacted to be financial sponsors and a variety of other donations are being accepted too (gift cards, prizes, etc.) Volunteers are needed for hole contests. Committee remains confident that it will be a successful event and hopefully will become an annual event.
• Annual Calendar: This is being completed and will soon be available. • Walking Together Review Process: A formal review process for Pastor Nat includes continues and is
implemented through the Synod. This “walking together” program is part of the first year for any new pastor and a Synod representative meets regularly with pastor and review committee. Review committee is church council president, 1 council member and two people from the call committee. Very thorough and a good process that can be used after the first year too. The committee/synod/pastor Nat met last week and final meeting is scheduled for October. Formal review process will be in place for other church employees too.
8. Next Meeting Tuesday, August 20th at 6:00 PM 9. Adjournment Motion to adjourn Bill Britton, seconded by Mat Emery. Motion carried.

Time & Talent Sheets
Watch your mailbox for an important stewardship
mailing from BLC. Inside, you’ll find your ytd giving
statement as well as the latest Time & Talent sheet
for 2019-2020. These Time & Talent sheets are the
best way to “plug in” to life at BLC. Let us know
your interests and gifts, and based upon your input,
we’ll match your gifts with regular service
opportunities at BLC. Simply return your completed
Time & Talent sheet to the church office (or place it
in Sunday’s offering plate). Later this month, we’ll
use this feedback to build BLC’s volunteer schedule
for the new year (e.g. readers, communion
assistants, property team helpers, etc.). Your Time
& Talent sheets are critical to the life of faith we
practice each week here at BLC. To all who serve,
THANK YOU for your willingness to share your gifts
and interests with the Bethlehem community!
Direct Support Professionals Week Do you know someone who is a caregiver to a loved one? It is a role that is both demanding and meaningful. During September’s National Direct Support Professionals Week, we celebrate all the ways in which professional caregivers help children and adults achieve their goals and build meaningful lives. One way LSI empowers Iowans is through our Services for People with Disabilities. From 24-hour support to occasional respite care, the LSI team lifts up Iowans with disabilities as they find the confidence and independence they need to thrive in their communities. We thank you for your faithful support of LSI – you create so many new life-changing possibilities for children, adults, and families! If you would like to learn more about how you can support crucial programming like LSI’s Services for People with Disabilities, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563-676-2065. BLC’s regular giving to the SE Iowa Synod & the
ELCA supports the mission of LSI and other non-
profit missions throughout Iowa and the world.

New Adult Study Class
Join Pastor Nat on Sundays after worship at 10:30 for a 7 week series , “Animate: Faith” beginning September 29th. This unique curriculum features 7 short DVD clips that are designed to spark theological conversations. The Animate Faith sessions are “like a guided tour through the basics of Christian theology.” You’ll hear from the likes of Brian McLaren, Nadia Boz-weber, Lillian Daniel, and others. After each brief video, you’ll have a chance to chime in. What caught your attention? What questions of your own were affirmed? This class will create opportunities to wander as we wonder (together, and often, aloud) about the love of God in Jesus Christ. Watch for more details to come, and do plan to join us! Excerpts from “Our Common Witness” by Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
One of the distinct privileges of this call as presiding bishop is seeing the church at work at home and around the world. The Lutheran movement is alive and well, speaking the gospel in a distinctive voice. Sunday after Sunday the good
news is proclaimed in accordance with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. In hundreds of languages and dialects, God’s promise of grace, reconciliation and freedom is received and celebrated in places Martin Luther never knew existed. We are part of a worldwide family.
In many ways, and in the most important ways, we are alike. The cross is our center. Faith, grace and Scripture alone are our guides. A clear understanding of human brokenness and our inability to save ourselves sets us apart from societal and even some theological pressures that would try to draw us away from the source of our life and freedom. A world built on works and individualism promises salvation based on our own effort and denies salvation if we fail. The Lutheran movement points to another way. This is our common witness… (article continues)
Around the world the expression of Lutheranism takes on many different flavors—literally and figuratively… (article continues)
Part of Luther’s genius was to make Scripture, preaching and worship available in the language of the people. All these variations make the Lutheran movement richer, especially when we share across borders and cultures… (article continues)
Now it’s time to move forward. It’s good to remember the events of the 16th century, but we shouldn’t get stuck there. We need to ask what it means to be Lutheran in the 21st century… (article continues)
What will our Lutheran identity be in the ELCA? We still treasure our immigrant roots—and we should. But if our ethnic identities become synonymous with Lutheran identity, we are missing the mark. The gospel, and Luther’s clear exposition of it, transcends human boundaries. When a single culture’s vernacular becomes the established language of the people, we hinder the gospel’s free course in the world. We can become an alternative face of Christianity in the culture—one that moves across divisions, is meant for all, and that is a free and liberating gift.
