It is the start of the Spring 2019 semester and ACK’s Student Life Department organized a welcome back event where new students and returning ones enjoyed music, food and different activities.

The welcome back event took place in the area in front of Building 2. It was held from Sunday January 20th to Thursday January 24th. There were various activities and prizes from ACK including a BBQ, Talent Show, Tug of War, Bingo, Wheel Trivia, and a Treasure Hunt.

It is always great to see the energy, talent, and excitement of our students to start yet another semester. The welcome back event remains an exciting way to welcome everyone back and give students and staff fun ways to interact and socialize.

For more information about events and activities, please contact Student Life at [email protected].

We wish everyone a great semester ahead.

ACK Fire Safety DayOrganized by the Occupational Health and Safety DepartmentInterview by Dalal Al Shatti

Having focused on health and recycling related themes for the first five ACK Health day events, the decision was taken to highlight fire safety awareness for the Fall 2018 occasion using the title ‘ACK Fire Safety Day’.

To maximize the impact and outcomes from the event, the Kuwait Fire Department was requested to participate and the College was most grateful for the overwhelming support. In addition to having a range of emergency vehicles present and available for visitors to inspect, the Fire crews also set up a number of exciting and educational activities for attendees including controlled use of fire extinguishers to put out flames ignited remotely under a car bonnet.

1- How did the Health Day Events start? Ms. Al-Maraghi: The Occupational Health and Safety Department has structured an ACK Healthy Living Committee composed of staff and students from different levels of the organization to provide diversified Health and Safety promotional culture building functions. The committee is currently working on three main programs which are the ACK Health Day Events, Blood Donation Events, and the Smoking Awareness Program.

The ACK Health Day initiative was instigated in 2016 as part of the ongoing commitment by the college towards promotion of healthy lifestyles for students, staff, their families and the Kuwaiti community.

In March 2016, recognizing the priority for greater understanding of the effects of smoking on people and the environment, the first ACK Health Day showcased various smoking awareness activities in addition to a wide range of games and activities for attendees of all ages. A major draw-card was the inaugural of the ACK Decathlon in which teams of 5 players competed against other teams for the coveted ACK Torch. The first ACK Health Day was attended by in excess of 300 people.

As a result of the outstanding success of this event, a second ACK Health Day was held in November 2016. This time, the ACK Healthy Living Committee decided to build school pride

through this important initiative amongst ACK’s students. On that note, students from the School of Business were invited to take part in the management of the event as part of their applied learning studies. The theme chosen for the second Health Day was ‘Movember’ to highlight Cancer Awareness and the outcomes achieved by the students were beyond the optimistic expectations of the ACK Healthy Living Committee. Around 400 people attended and the activities arranged by the students were so impressive that the Australian Ambassador to Kuwait, who attended the event with his family, sent a special email of congratulations praising the enthusiasm and energy of the students.

Further ACK Health Days with differing themes will continue to be held by the college. So far six Health Days have been hosted:

Health & Smoking / Movember / Australian Health Day / ACK Goes Green / Nutrition and Health / ACK Fire Safety Day

2- Did you face any problems managing those events? Especially the last event?

Ms. Al-Maraghi: When managing any event, things definitely don’t always go as planned. There are factors that can suddenly arise. In one of the previous Health Days, the grass was watered three hours before the event which made the ground wet when installing the booths. As for the last event, ACK Fire Safety Day, due to extreme weather conditions, we had to postpone the

day of the event which made some of the invited food outlets cancel their participation as they already had other pre-arranged commitments in the chosen postponed date.

3- Who were the invited guests in the ACK Fire Safety Day?

Ms. Al-Maraghi: - Kuwait Fire Department (KFD) - Cancer Aware Nation (CAN) - Bright Future Institute

4- What was the number of attendees for this event? How did you manage to ensure all age groups had something to do during the event?

Ms. Al-Maraghi: Around 500 staff and students, their friends and families came to this event. We made sure to have stage shows that are interesting for students and children, recreational games and booths for children and adults to ensure staff and their families attend and for students to attend as well. We also had raffle draws to encourage attendees to stay till the end of the event. The choice of music and food outlets also played a role to grasp the attendance of students.

5- Will there be a Health and Safety Day next semester?

Ms. Al-Maraghi: As for the Spring 2019 semester, unfortunately there will be no Health and Safety day event due to added responsibilities on the Department. We feel that it is best not to host the event next semester to get the added responsibilities operating competently, but we are planning to resume by Fall 2019.

Thank you Ms. Mariam, it’s an honor to interview you and I wish you a successful future with your upcoming events.

In the end, the event wouldn’t have run smoothly without the collaborative efforts of departments and student volunteers:

A group of members from the ACK Student Magazine Committee took a tour around the Aviation building at ACK. This tour was very special to us as Captain Abdul Hameed Al Refai, Director - School of Aviation, introduced us to basic information about Aviation and pilots. The School of Aviation has a simulator of a plane and a helicopter that we got to experiment with. The simulator displays different airports, weather conditions, and emergency scenarios. We got to practice take off, landing, and even landing during engine failure. Handling a helicopter was a lot more challenging than flying an airplane. Helicopters are very sensitive to movement and wind and are a lot less stable. It was very interesting to see the difference between flying the two planes.

We were astonished by the amount of details required to be a pilot. There are numerous policies and regulations that every pilot has to be familiar with. Communication is key to avoid emergency situations. Pilots may face many issues related to the weather, visibility, speed and direction of the wind, etc. If a problem arises, they should be able to communicate the problem well and come up with solutions in a timely manner.

We thank the School of Aviation for providing us with this one of a kind experience. An extended version of this article will be published in the ACK Year in Review 2018/2019.

The trip was organized by the Student Life Department. Both of our football teams qualified to the semifinals. It was a great experience for our students and for our college to have participated in a tournament that had more than 50 countries participating.

ACK congratulates all its athletes while encouraging them to participate in sports and health-related activities which will benefit them in achieving their academic and non-academic goals.

English Village Launch

The ACK English Village is a versatile room located in Floor 1, Building 2 established to encourage the use of the English language outside the usual classroom environment.

The official launch took place at the end of November 2018 and was held by Prof. Isam Zabalawi, ACK President.

As part of a class project, a group of students from the School of Business prepared promotional materials in preparation for the launch including a formal invitation, bookmarks, and “Word of the Day” posts on social media.

Currently, the English Language Program is using the village for activities such as presentations and discussions in a different learning environment.

The English Village is a place where all ACK students are welcome and we look forward to more ideas as to how we can use it to practice English and in the process get to know students and staff from different areas of the college.

Saleh Al Mouli, Talal Al Mouli, Thamer Al Ostad, Marwah Nooraldeen and Mrs. Rupali Bhagat, Instructor - Management, all attended TEDxKuwaitCity.

Abdulrahaman AlMunayes was one of the speakers who is an Innovative Program Leader. He spoke to the audience about three main points which were dream, draw and drive. He explained that these three steps result in creative and innovative ideas. We were inspired by his ideas and how anyone can be innovative just by dreaming an idea, drawing that idea and having the drive to fulfill that idea.

The speakers, Abdulrahman AlMunaifi and Youmna Tanon, are both young and are members of the Future Coders Club. They spoke about why coding is important in this generation and showed how coding can be beneficial in the future. We were astonished by how unique their presentation was and how well they delivered their message to the crowd.
