Your local healthcare orga-nizations have been closely following recent reports and information about the latest developments with “COV-ID-19,” otherwise known as the “coronavirus.” We are working closely together to be pre-pared and we have processes in place per CDC and ND Department of Health require-ments. This update provides information on what you can do to help prevent contracting the virus, and what you can expect from your local health-care professionals should COVID-19 directly affect you.

If you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19, contact your healthcare pro-vider at Coal Country Com-munity Health Center (CCCHC) by phone. If you are calling after-hours, please contact

Sakakawea Medical Center (SMC) at 701.748.2225.

For your information: We have set up a clinic

for patients with respiratory illnesses to be seen at the CCCHC Hazen Clinic. Patients that need to see a provider for other healthcare con-cerns, will be scheduled at the CCCHC Beulah Clinic.

When scheduling an ap-pointment at CCCHC Beulah/Hazen, all patients will be asked the following questions and will be scheduled at the appropriate clinic site.

Have you been in contact with someone who is sick or do you currently have any of these respiratory symptoms: Fever, cough, sore throat or diffi culty breathing?

Have you traveled interna-tionally in the past 30 days?

Did you travel recently in the United States to Wash-ington State, New York, or California?

Have you had close contact with a confi rmed or probable case of COVID-19?

CCCHC Center & Killdeer Clinics are deferring patients with respiratory illnesses until further notice.

Front desk staff at SMC will also be screening patients coming into the hospital and will be asking patients to wear a mask and gloves if neces-sary.

Visitor restrictions have been put in place at both SMC and Senior Suites.

Prevention: The best way to prevent illness is to avoid be-ing exposed to this virus. We recommend everyday preven-

tive actions to help prevent the spread of virus, including:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after using the restroom, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with un-washed hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Stay home from work and public areas if you are sick.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw used tissues in the trash and immediately wash your hands.

Clean and disinfect fre-

quently touched objects and surfaces daily using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

Facemasks should be used if you are experiencing fl u-like symptoms, such as coughing. This will help reduce spread of any virus you have.

For the most updated and timely information and up-dates related to COVID-19, visit the ND Department of Health website at www.health.nd.gov/coronavirus and visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus.

This event will be rescheduled at a later date.

By Daniel Arens

Several upcoming commu-nity events have been post-poned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Three planned events for next week will not be held at their previously scheduled times. Sunday’s hospital auxiliary community meal, the Taste of Hazen chamber of commerce event Monday eve-ning and next Friday’s Grape Escape put on by Sakakawea Hospice are postponed, with their future date yet to be de-termined while our communi-ties, state and nation deal with the stress put on the health and economy by the outbreak.

The announcements of these closures comes on the heals of Governor Doug Burgum’s closure of all North Dakota public schools for the current school week, as well

as statements by national lead-ers and agencies, including a request from President Donald Trump Monday for citizens to limit interactions with each other for a 15 day period.

“This is a trying time, so many questions and con-cerns,” Antoinette Heier, Hazen Chamber of Commerce executive director, said in a statement. “The main uncer-tainty in the United States now is how big it will get and how fast.”

Heier went on in the state-ment to say a primary motive in these postponements of large public gatherings is to prevent the virus from spread-ing fast if it does come into the community. A limited spread of coronavirus will also help prevent the local health care system from being over-whelmed.

LOBBY CLOSED

TRACKS IN THE SANDKEN BEAUCHAMP

Long before many people in need of toilet paper today were toilet trained or born yet, there was a popularity with toilet paper. Remember my Whipple who watched for people squeezing the Char-min, a popular brand, also made famous in a country song about a guy warning people about squeezing his girlfriend Charmin? Ah, yes, times were simpler and more earthy then. That happens when you’re only a genera-tion away from mostly out-door facilities, peach wrap-pers and catalog pages.

Well, we are worried about toilet paper with this virus panic. Shelves are wiped clean of toilet paper. A business friend of mine ordered 300 cases. He wor-ried about getting stuck if changes occur suddenly. I assured him we could sell it as “commemorative toilet paper”. He was so grateful he promised to deliver a case to my door, along with an in-structional, video, since I’ve kind of botched a couple of recent deals we made.

Here at the newspaper we have begun to get frugal. We may have to stop giving old newspapers away for free to people who use them for packing and making fires. I’m not sure what our “End of Times” prices will be. I am conducting an informal study as to how many aver-age wipes are in our usual weekly publication. Sub-scriptions remain available at this writing. And, I believe we use vegetable based ink

for the Green Crowd. I think the huge presses crush the viruses, too.

Did I mention that we also have the large economy size rolls” We call them “end rolls” and they are the remains of the large web print rolls that feed the news presses. Nearly two feet wide in some cases. Sorry, but they require special order from the printing plant.

I don’t know if it is true but there are reports of people stealing toilet paper from public restrooms. Well, I have heard of people doing that for years. The difference is now they may be wealthy but just aren’t desperate enough to start using paper money. I’,m waiting for the guy to brag, “i wiped with a hundred dollar bill. It was my whole paycheck!” Fol-lowed, of course, by subbing and tears with no one willing to offer a tissue paper.

Well, I’m not sure how se-rious this toilet paper crisis will get. Back in the Great Depression days people who thought they had money in the banks found out the banks were cleaned out. Some people had stocked up

on gold and then President Franklin Roosevelt made everyone turn in their gold while they made people kill their livestock to save feed for humans. Is former presidential candidate Bedo Orourke coming to get your semi autos and your toilet paper? If the country goes socialist will be have to all share in order to have equal amounts of toilet paper?

I bet some of you can remember when ideas I the ones I’ve just shared sounded and were nuts. We should be so lucky again! Even a senile old shopkeep worried about his toilet paper supply and a country singer who thought his sweetheart was next to toilet paper have become more serious than laughable.

Now let me give you some bad news. They said just today that the Corona Virus isn’t just respiratory, etc., it has also proven to make people “rumbly in the tumbly” as we used to say when I was a kid. Bartender, start setting up the Keopec-tate Stingers! The President will probably give us some tough love and advise us all that it is tighten up time.

I expect that the next phase here, if toilet paper continues o wind down, will be for President Trump to do what he does best. He’ll make a deal. And with whom you ask. Simple. He identified the market for that trade some time ago when he announced that a number of nations were, let’s say, Poop Hole Countries. Now they must be well stocked! They would maybe trade a box of Frosted Flakes for a case, half a case minimum, of paper.

My God, we have lived in a rich country. Our televi-sion commercials even have us believe that bears, yes they do go in the woods and indoors, too, are picky about their toilet paper. Porridge to beds to toilet paper. What a natural transition to civi-lized behavior.

I saw a movie where a vet told about how they had no toilet paper in the desert dur-ing the Iraq War. “Had to use your hand”, he said. Well, I don’t know, but if it comes to that, and we have a spring flood and have to sandbag, we could face a real crisis, mostly of decision making and prioritizing.

Or, it might depend on how high the water gets or if you don’t want to use the sink sprayer.

We probably can’t use the world here to describe the choices we may have. By the way, talked to an en-vironmentalist today who thinks trees are only good to look at?

Yes, the time for a love song on TP is now!
