¿Qué es FAO?
La FAO es un Organismo especializado de las Naciones Unidas que trabaja en las áreas de agricultura, ganadería, pesca, silvicultura, economía agrícola, nutrición y desarrollo rural, entre otras.

¿Qué es la seguridad alimentaria?
Cuando todas las personas tienen en todo momento acceso físico, social y económico a suficientes alimentos inocuos y nutritivos para satisfacer sus necesidades alimenticias y sus preferencias en cuanto a los alimentos a fin de llevar una vida activa y sana.

Cuando las personasno tienen acceso físico, social o económico suficiente aalimentos.

Forma clínica de hambre provocada por carencias graves de uno o varios nutrientes que impiden a una persona mantener adecuadamente las funciones orgánicas.

¿Qué es subnutrición?
Cuando el aporte calórico esinferior a las necesidades mínimas de energía para realizar una actividad ligera y la masa corporal tiene una correspondencia la altura.

¿Hambre = Pobreza?
Hambre y pobreza extrema no son equivalentes.
En 2002 L.A. la población en extrema pobreza llegaba a 18%(96 millones).
La población subnutrida alcanzaba el 10% (53 millones).

Paradoja La pobreza coincide sólo parcialmente con el hambre, ya que una persona puede ser extremadamente pobre pero no padecer de inseguridad alimentaria, mientras que el desnutrido crónico puede vivir en un área donde se ha promovido el desarrollo rural y los ingresos per capita han subido significativamente, pero seguir hambriento.

Producción de alimentos
Durante la última década la producción mundial de alimentos siguió en general una tendencia al alza, incluso per cápita.
No obstante, el número de personas subnutridas se ha mantenido elevado en lugar de descender.

El crecimiento económico no garantiza el éxito automáticamente, debe de haber políticas de repartición de la riqueza.
75% de la población pobre de los países en desarrollo vive en zonas rurales y obtiene una gran parte de sus medios de subsistencia de la agricultura.

La pobreza priva a la población de medios para comprar o producir alimentos, la población hambrienta no puede trabajar empleándose al máximo y es más susceptible ante las enfermedades y los niños malnutridos son incapaces de aprender de modo eficaz y muchos de ellos quedan discapacitados de por vida.

Obesidad preocupación creciente
la obesidad que tradicionalmente se ha asociado con culturas de abundancia, pero que están aumentando en los países en desarrollo.
Por primera vez en la historia, el número de personas con sobrepeso comienza a equipararse con el número de personas subnutridas en todo el mundo.

MéxicoPaís con más niños obesos en el mundo, se incrementa 1.1% cada año, en 2006 18% de lo niños en edad escolar tenían prevalencia de obesidad.

Un nuevo estudio indica que la cantidad de horas que los niños pasan mirando televisión los torna vulnerables a la obesidad, al exponerse a publicidades de comidas y alimentos.
La Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí concluye que los menores de 7 años, mirando publicidad, aumentaron de peso en los siguientes cinco años.

• El consumo anual de azúcar en México por habitante es de 5 kilos, poco más de 2 veces más que el promedio mundial.
• En el 2007 el consumo por habitante anual fue de 160 litros de refresco.
• El 56% de las grasas que consumen los niños de 1-4 años son de alimentos procesados.

La obesidad suele ser un signo de nutrición deficiente, en general por un elevado consumo de harinas y azúcares refinadas

Los países que todavía siguen luchando para alimentar a gran parte de su población tienen que hacer frente ahora a los costos del tratamiento de la obesidad y las enfermedades crónicas graves relacionadas con ella.
Esto se refleja en cardiopatías, hipertensión, ataques apopléticos, diabetes y ciertos tipos de cáncer.
