Accomplishments with image “products” from the GOES Sounder and Imager
- GOES montage assembled for Hurricane Isabel (Sep 2003)
- Animation of layered precipitable water (PW) Sounder SFOV derived product imagery (DPI) added (Dec 2003)
- CIMSS GOES Realtime Page transferred to new CIMSS web server (Jan 2004)
- CIMSS GOES Realtime Page transitioned to solely SFOV Sounder products (from “vern), following loss of “suomi” (Mar 2004)
- Observed GOES imagery compared to CRAS forecast imagery (ongoing) [REDOGS.BAT, COMPGOVCF.BAT, makgovcf.scr, …]
Fledgling effort to improve the GOES Sounder retrievals back in early 2003, with GOES retrieval “directions” meetings (resulting from dissatisfaction with some of the routine DPI during IHOP), has culminated in a renewed focus to continue work on the current GOES Sounders, in the GOES Retrieval Science (GRS) team, dynamically led by Jun Li. Development is underway with various modifications, considering time continuity constraints, inverted cone filtering, model independent first-guess, and surface emissivity.

Where will clouds be? Comparison between
observed imagery (bottom) and forecast imagery (top) builds confidence in how
well the CRAS model is assimilating
retrieved GOES Sounder cloud and
moisture information.
Where will forecast (GFS) moisture need to be modified, monitoring trends, to provide a
better forecast for convection (as across Texas)? Differences between retrieved
GOES Sounder TPW and the GFS forecast values are plotted over the GOES TPW
Derived Product Imagery (DPI).

Part 1: Upper Tropospheric Moisture. J. Appl. Meteor., 43, 17-27. _ , 2004: Assimilating GOES Brightness Temperatures. Part 2: Assigning Water Vapor Wind Heights Directly from Weighting Functions. J. Appl. Meteor., 43, 1200-12.
- Detailed critiques of Beta tests of VISIT training modules (1. Interactive cloud height algorithm and GOES Sounder point retrievals in AWIPS 2. Forecasting convective downburst potential using GOES Sounder derived products)
- Trips to southern Wisconsin NWS Office (MKX) in Sullivan: Sep 2003 (with T. Mostek (COMET) and CIMSS contingent); Mar 2004 (with S. Bachmeier for “shadowing” N. Johnston and IFPS processing experience)

Adjusting a model field with GOES observations
The demonstrated assimilation procedure modifies only the moisture field in
physical space (in contrast to radiance space). The numerical optimization of the
differences for channel 3 brightness temperatures (water vapor at 6.7 um),
between the forecast initial conditions (by a forward radiative model) and the
observed GOES values, is incorporated directly into the CIMSS Regional
Assimilation System (CRAS) forecast model. The partitioning of changes made to the model moisture field, in physical
space, is directly proportional to the observational weighting functions.
