Introduction Welcome to Movicon X, the new generation of Scada/HMI platforms completely based on XML to provide you with a one-only environment, from Windows ® XP to Windows® CE. Movicon X represents the latest innovative and revolutionary generation of Scada/HMI software platforms for industrial supervision and control. Since 1992, Movicon has been a standing reference point in software technology for automation due to its concepts of simplicity, scalability, power and openness. Today the 10th evolution of the product, called Movicon X, renews the supervision concept by already adopting technology, which today represents the future of automation. Today Movicon X, by keeping and expanding its scalability characteristics, proposes itself on the market as the standard software platform for all those operating in the industrial automation field, telephony/remote control, and building automation environments, as a one-only Scada/HMI software for any type of employment and with any type of hardware. Movicon can actually be employed either with micro-controllers and/or mobile devices based on WinCE, or on Personal Computers in big plant systems with client/server redundancy architecture, connected to any type of industrial or civil PLC and fieldbus.



Universal Scada/HMI platform: Movicon X is a standard development platfrom for any automation level. One-only software for all factory levels, from WinCe embedded systemd to Scada platforms based on Windows XP. Movicon X integrates all the necessary functions for any automation, vision, data acquistion and control requirment. Remote access is guaranteed both by the Client/Server architecture and the new Web Client architecture to get your plant system truly Web-enabled due to the integrated Java and Web Services technologies.

Thanks to the extreme connectivity of Movicon X, you can now connect to any industrial device, such as PLC, Fieldbus, Instrumentation and Remote I/O. All the best-known hardware manufacturers (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Omron, GE Fanuc, Saia, Mitsubishi, etc.) are directly supported with and powerful and very efficient drivers, with direct PLC’ Tag importation. This means by using Movicon X, you can at last use only one software platform for all your applications allowing you to save on ownerships costs.



Features:

Simplicity. Movicon X surpasses any other product for simplicity-of-use and intuitiveness due to its innovated and stylish workspace, integrated wizards and tag importing tools. With Movicon X designing is immediate and pleasurable where you can get great visual impact in next-to-no-time, drastically beating any of your previous developing times.

Scalability. Movicon X offers one-only software platform, from Windows CE to Windows XP. Thanks to which you only need to keep just one software in your company, whether for micro-applications on HMI terminals or for medium-big applications for processing plants.

Openness. Movicon X is totally based on XML. The projects are simple XML files, which can also be opened and edited with other editors. This platform is always open to integration and customization with the world of Windows applications. The projects can be grouped in structures and distributed.

Security. Movicon X guarantees the maximum data security. The projects, being based on XML, can be encrypted with algorithm figures in 128 bits. The FDA CFR21 Part 11 normative has been completely integrated in the platform, making it extremely easier to create applications with FDA validation. The renewed Users Password management guarantees safe access by levels and/or areas.

Standards. Movicon X is totally based on standard technologies, to safeguard your investment. The XML, ODBC, OPC, VBA, SOAP, Web Services, TCP-IP, UDP, HTTP, SQL technologies have been integrated in the platform to guarantee transparency and easy access to data.

Performances. Movicon X has increased its absolute kernel performances by 2.5 times more compared to the earlier already fast performing version. This is all due a renewed ‘thread pooling’ concept and the new graphic engines based on SVG (Scalable Vectorial Graphics). Also its new VBA logic engine has doubled in speed.

Connectivity. Movicon X introduces a new generation of communication drivers. The new drivers include functionalities for automatic tag import, remote connectivity via modem, multi-station concept for point-to-point protocols, bridging concept (for teleservice on PLCs) and immediate wiring tests. The



drivers guarantee full configurability and the possibility to communicate on event which can also be customized by using the VBA logic. In addition to the included free-of-charge driver libraries, Movicon X offers full connectivity via OPC, with a preview of the new XMLDA OPC technology, as well as maintaining and consolidating the Server and Client OPC DA communication

Efficient Networking. Movicon X has completely renewed the integrated networking management. This sophisticated technology, which does need you to compromise with anything else, increases efficiency and performances due to the emergent and multiplatform SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) and SOA (Service Oriented Application) technologies. The new version also supports the UDP and HTTP as well as the TCP-IP protocols. It supports automatic remote connections via RAS. Movicon X has also introduced the Web Services technologies for which information distribution can finally support public networks (Internet) to guarantee safety without being detrimental to any firewalls.

Web-enabled Architecture. Movicon X has renewed the Web Client technology with the JAVA technology which integrates very well with the XML, SVG and Web Services technologies, permitting server access by using the internet browser on any platform (Windows, Linux, Palm, PockePC and the Javaphones telephony thanks to J2ME). Multiuser, bidirectionality, performances and safety are all guaranteed.



System Installation This section explains the procedures to carry out in order to startup, install and configure Movicon correctly. The Microsoft Windows installation already provides an operating system configuration for hardware platform adaptation. Nevertheless it would be to your best advantage to follow the few indications below for further optimization.

Movicon Installation

The procedures for installing Movicon on the hardware platform are very simple and meet the standards set out by the Microsoft Windows XP specifications for which Movicon is certified. By inserting the CD-ROM you will automatically enter into the installation environment, where the command guide will activate to install the Movicon components desired. When manually installing Movicon from the CD-Rom, you need to access the CD folder with the Windows Explorer and execute the Set.exe: D:\MoviconX2\setup\Setup.exe The Setup will startup the Movicon installation on the PC, creating an icon group identified under the Movicon name which are accessible by using the ‘Start’ button from the Windows application bar. The Movicon Group, in icon form, will contain the connections to the Movicon.exe. file. During the brief installation you will be asked to enter the name of the directory where the files necessary to Movicon are to be organized. If you do not wish to change the name or the path just simply confirm the ‘Movicon X’ default directory which will be created with the path: “Program Files\Progea\Movicon X2\”.



Uninstall Movicon

Movicon, in compliance with the Windows standards, consents simple system uninstalling to remove all its files from the PC. To carry out this procedure just activate the appropriate icon provided for adding/removing programs in the Windows Control Panel icon group. The uninstalling procedures provide the complete removal of all the Movicon files upon receiving confirmation.

Movicon Startup

The Movicon installation creates a group of icons that can be accessed through the Windows Start menu. Launching the execution of Movicon.exe without specifying any options will enter you into the Movicon environment with the automatic opening of a new project or the last opened project. By entering an appropriate syntax in the Command line Option when launching Movicon will permit you to modify the system’s default settings, by associating them a project file, customization modules and other options as shown below. The syntax for Movicon Start-up with the command options is:

Movicon /[Options] <project file > The command options are indicated in the manual. If you wish to start Movicon and launch a previously programmed project run at the same time you must use the /R. Below is an example of a command line to automatically start the TEST.PRJ project file:

C:\Program Files\Progea\MoviconX2\Movicon.exe /R C:\Documents\Test.prj If you wish to add or modify the command options or Movicon work directory inside Windows, make the following moves: Press the right mouse key within the Windows Desktop workspace and select the New – ShortCut command. Through the settings window illustrated below, enter the command line desired for the Movicon startup.

Consult the Windows User manual for further information on using the shortCut icon properties. Starting up Movicon without any command options will enter you into the system in programming mode with the opening of a new project file.

License Policy

Movicon X requires a commercial license and is protected against illegal use. There are two ways in which to unlock and enable the software according to client requirements:

1. USB (or LPT) dongles 2. ‘SoftKey’ Unlocking Codes

To display the serial number and the enabled options in your purchased Movicon packet you need to select the Dongle Requirements from the project’s Command Pane then Dongle Options.

You will be able to see information on the number of bytes (Tags) and options used and necessary to the project.

Product Demo and Evaluation

Progea believes in “Try before you Buy”, allowing you to try out and evaluate the product in full operating mode before buying: If the software

does not detect the presence of any license it will run in ‘Evaluation Mode’, letting you fully use all the functionalities while a pop-up window will frequently display to remind you that the product is being run in evaluation mode.



Workspace The Movicon X Workspace environment has been explicitly designed with the most modern ergonomic and practical concepts in mind. The platform has been made extremely easier and simpler to use intuitively. Users can create vision and control projects with a few simple mouse clicks, to display graphics libraries and pre-configured toolboxes, wizard assistance, and all the utility tools needed for building immediate powerful applications with a noticeable difference in time saving.

Project Window. All the project resources are clearly and intuitively accessible.

Logic Explorer Window.The VBA codes or the AWL Logic codes are available based on the resource selected.

Area Toolboxes. The Toolboxes give you quick access to the symbol and object libraries.

The Project Window

The Project Window is used for managing the Movicon X project resources. All the resources and their contents are displayed in a tree structure. When selecting the container resource or the resource contents, their relating properties will display. The relating menu is accessed with the mouse right key. The executable commands relating to the resource selected are found in the Command Pane at the bottom of the Project Window. The ToolBar, at the top of the window gives you quick access to project resources. This window can be kept visible, docked or dragged to any point within the workspace.

The Properties Window

The Properties Window permits you to access the list of properties relating to the resource or the objects selected. Through the Properties Window the user can easily and quickly configure all the dynamic general, style or security features provided for the object or resource selected. The window can be kept visible, docked or dragged to any point within the workspace.



System Architecture

Movicon X is based on the best innovative software technology. Its structure is entirely based on XML to guarantee efficient performances and openness.

The architecture layout The philosophy used in this type of architecture provides maximum employment flexibility and makes Movicon X the standard software platform for all those who work in industrial automation, telephony remote control and in building automation, for its one-only Scada/HMI software which can be used anywhere.



Project Structure in XML

The Movicon X projects are simple and standard XML files due to which the innovated technology of Movicon X is able to offer doubled advantages in openness and performances. Its openness, allows each project or part of it (resources, objects, tags) to be edited with any other editor without needing to use export commands. By just using the simple ‘Copy&Paste’ function you can use any editor (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.,) to modify or handle any Movicon object or resource.

Project Relationships

The Movicon X projects support the ‘Parent-child’ relationship concept. This concept allows the application to be structured in more than one project, where the ‘Parent’ can be related to different ‘child’ projects, also at different levels. In this way companies can distribute their work by integrating numerous projects without having to worry about managing names of resources or tags which are automatically acknowledged by the parent project.

Wizards The Movicon X wizard is the main tool used for automatically creating projects. This Wizard helps the user to preset the complete structure of the project with few simple guides steps. When creating a new project Movicon allows you to define the platform you wish to use. Based on the platform chosen, some of the functionalities, which are not support by the target, will be enabled or disabled. When this operation is confirmed, Movicon will display the wizard to guide you in pre-

setting up the whole project. By using the wizard’s simple guided steps you will be able to set:

1. Project Name, path, encryption, compression, Unicode. 2. Password management, Sharing Users with the Microsoft

server domain, Settings for the CFR21 regulations. 3. Selection and configuration of communication Drivers, Tag

Database import directly from the PLC, communication parameters.

4. Number of screens to be entered navigation buttons, default sizes.

5. Network Server enabling and parameters 6. ODBC Structure, automatic DSN creation, choose and

enable data format. 7. Automatic Data Logger Template creation



8. Automatic Alarm Template creation Each project setting created automatically by the wizard can be modified afterwards by means of using the properties relating to each single resource.



Tags Database The Movicon X real-time database is based on an extremely efficient and optimized technology. The kernel of the new platform increases performances by 250% compared to the already fast previous version. This increase is due to the completely renewed technology of the system, based on XML, on total event-driven technology and on the highly efficient thread pooling management.

The Movicon X Tags have numerous properties that are used to render individual Tags into true and real operating centers. Each Tag can be associated with commands to execute on value thresholds. The scaling can be set as well as the real-time database links to the OPC servers or Clients. The networking modes can be set. Each Tag can be traced with the maximum accuracy in an appropriated DB with customized messages. The Tags can have physical device addresses or be kept independent of drivers as before. Structure Tags can be managed with different data types. The project’s tags can be imported directly from the PLC (Simatic S7, Rockwell, Mitsubishi and others.), which saves al lot of time. Dynamic



Tags can be associated to objects within the project (tagless project) without having to be explicitly declared in the database. The innovated scalability concession allows the Movicon X licenses to be divided according to the quantity of tags in-use, independently of those declared in the project.

Architecture layout.



Graphics Creating screens assigned for vision and control (HMI) is extremely simple and powerful. Movicon’s graphic management cannot be matched when building optimal features for supervision systems.

Graphic Editor

Movicon provides a complete vectorial Graphic Editor, based on the SVG technology, through which drawings can be createdin forms of objects or symbols (lines, shapes, polygons, texts, symbols, etc.,) and can be configured and animated very easily with immediate effect through their properties windows. The screens are graphic resources designed to contain the graphic drawings, symbols and objects. The screens can be managed with all the operating modalities managed by Windows (display screens, pop-up, modals, etc) and each screen can be assigned to a different monitor in a multi-monitor system. The screens can be opened in ‘safe mode’. Movicon will open in a separate process to avoid any activeX object corruption of the whole project’s stability. Movicon also allows the graphics to be automatically adapted to the screen’s resolution or window size, rendering also bitmap images extremely efficient which, like external vectorials, can be associated as background.



The created drawing can either be static or dynamic according to the Tags assigned to the various dynamic properties. The Movicon editor is compatible with metafile formats (WMF, EMF) through which drawings can be exported or imported. In addition to this, the symbols and screens support BMP, GIF and JPG images as well as WMF and EMF images. The screens can be parameterized, to beat developing time in when dealing with repetitive configurations.

ToolBox

The ToolBox gives you access to the libraries containing ready-made and ready-to-use vectorial objects. The graphic and command functionalities are already predisposed for quick and fast planning. Thus the ToolBox enables you to select the object type and drag it onto the screen where it can be configured through its properties. The objects from the Toolbox are stylistically extremely pleasant to look at with extremely powerful functionalities. Movicon X offers much more than just simple graphic objects typically used in HMI applications. Other types of objects are also found in the various categories in the ToolBox such as; Buttons (in different styles), Selectors, Switches, Emergency, Option boxes, Edit boxes, Gauges, BarGraphs, Sliders, Meters, Spin, List Boxes, Combo Boxes, DB Grids, Tabs, Window objects (Alarms, Logs, Trends, DB Viewers) Charts, Time Controls, Hot Regions, etc. Due to this vast choice, as well as graphical quality and completely preset potentiality, your applications will become extremely easier and much more immediate to build in order to get a highly professional and pleasant User Interface.



Graphic Libraries

Movicon provides a graphic library of standard symbols at the complete disposal of the developer, and which are commonly used throughout the process and automation plant system applications. Many of these symbols have already been pre-configured with animations, and are ready and waiting to be assigned with the desired tags only.

The Symbol Libraries are entirely expandible and customizable. The Symbols generate events which the VBA Script Logic can respond to, permitting the realization of powerful graphic and command functionality (Power Templates© technology). The graphics can be dependent on Tag quality or the users connected. For instance, a graphic object can be made inactive or invisible according to the user level or the quality status of the Tag. The symbols support the ‘inheritance’ concept so when one symbol is modified all the others belonging to the same family in the project will follow suit.

Power Templates

One of the most useful functionalities for the programmer working in a developing environment is to maintain and safeguard any work carried out. This is the basis of the Templates philosophy, where symbols are kept in the library retaining all their execution characteristics that they were configured with along with any links to alarms or Data Loggers. Graphic Symbols, Alarms and Data Loggers can be used to exploit this technology when after having been configured the programmer may find it useful to save the object as a ‘Template’ in the Movicon Symbols library. These templates can then be used again



by the programmer to avoid having to waste time entering and configuring repetitive functions and carry out “Alarm/DataLogger- graphical Symbol” associations” among other things. In addition to this Movicon also allows the graphic interface to be managed with the VBA

script technology. Apart from configuring execution properties, VBA script codes can also be inserted into each Screen, Drawing or Symbol. The VBA Script codes can be executed in response to events generated by the drawing. The drawing’s Methods, Procedures and Poroerties are at

the complete disposal of the programmer so that the VBA code can interact not only in the project’s resources but also in the drawing itself to modify all the graphic properties. This technology, called Power Template©, permits any type of display and command object as well as extremely powerful graphical symbol libraries to be created.

A Practical Example: let’s suppose you have to create 100 alarms linked to 100 valves of an imaginary plant. By using the Power Template technology you can create a graphical symbol for one single valve with the animation desired then create the alarm. The graphic symbol can be saved in the Symbols library and linked to the relative alarm. You then only have to insert the symbol each time it is needed and Movicon will create the variable and the alarm relating to the new valve introduced on screen by automatically assigning the first free address and unused name found.

Dynamic Animation

The Movicon X graphic animation functionalities are extremely powerful and versatile. Each graphic symbol consents to animation such as: Background and Edge coloring, Filling, Visibility, X and Y Positioning on trajectory line (the line of the symbol traced out by the mouse), Rotation (also on set barycentres), Scaling, Dynamic Texts, Display values, Transparency, Dynamic image displays (BMP, GIF, TIF, JPG, PNG, etc…).

Each drawing can be associated a VBA code in response to the events generated by that drawing or for carrying out any command or graphic functionality (Power Template© Technology). Tags are to be linked by means of the pre-chosen animation property in cases where one or more dynamic properties are assigned to one symbol.

Execution Commands

Movicon X consents a quick and powerful assigning of command lists to all the ToolBox’s graphic objects. The objects predisposed for execution commands (i.e. buttons, hot regions, etc.,) are selected and setup through an extremely simple and intuitive selection window. The commands can be directly assigned to Tag thresholds, schedulers and all the appropriate resources in the same way.



The command lists can be setup with the following command types:

• Assigning values on Tags • Open screen commands • VBA script execution • User password activation • View and print report commands. • Menu activation • Command execution on operating system • Change Language • Help file activation • Action on Alarms (ack, reset, report, filters, statistics)

Each command is to be assigned with the relative execution properties from the same window.



Alarms The Movicon X management complies with the ISA (S-18) normative, but is completely configurable in order to adapt to any application requirement. The project alarms are grouped in objects, which are then grouped into thresholds. Alarm activation can be evoked by a fixed threshold value or by another tag. The Acknowledge or reset operations on each alarm can be configured, just like the style and functioning modalities can be. The priority levels, which can be assigned to each alarm by the programmer, are virtually unlimited. The Alarms can be grouped into ‘Areas’ to obtain display filters for the operator or Alarm Window dedicated to each plant sector. The time-stamp is precise and accurate to the millisecond. Movicon X also integrates calculated statistics of the alarms with the highest frequency and/or duration in the specified period. Managing alarms in network architectures has been extremely simplified by connecting alarm windows to network stations, or to OPC AE servers. The alarms also support tag-linked texts, therefore the real values calculated at alarm interventions can be displayed and recorded. The alarms also manage SMS, Fax, Email, Speech notifications, through customizable sound files and any kind of intervention, acknowledgement and reset customizing can also be done through the VBA script in response to each alarm event.



Alarms Viewers

Alarm viewers are activated in projects according to the configurations described. These windows are created from vectorial objects taken from the ToolBox and their styles and functionalities are completely configurable by the programmer. The alarm windows being graphic objects are also subject to dynamic animation. Therefore they are not rigidly established by the system but by the project developer by using one or more of the many possibilities offered by the system in order to adapt the project to the various functioning needs or styles of the client or the plant. The Alarms, as all the project texts, support the dynamic Change Language, customizable Help, Operator Comments and ‘Banner’ displays. The alarm windows can be connected to any Network Server to display alarms from one or more remote stations. The beepers can also be customized by also supporting the .WAV sound format. In addition to this, the alarm guide management can also be customized. Apart from the normal guide texts you can link hypertexts such as Help files (.HLP or HTML) and therefore manage images, movies and hypertexts linked directly to each single alarm. The guide management or guided help facilities can be achieved in Movicon by also using the HTML formats, due to the Web Viewer object provided.

Alarm Dispatcher

Movicon X integrates a powerful module for sending alarm and event notifications to recipients or recipient groups. Each alarm can be associated with E-mails and dispatch attached files and SMS can be sent either by GSM or with the SMPP protocol. The Dispatcher Manager also handles TTS (Text-to-Speech) for vocal alarm texts, either locally to PCs or to telephone recipients with the remote acknowledgement management. Notification can also be given via Fax or with the Microsoft Messenger, which is particularly useful in plants permanently connected in local net or network. The personal recipient profiles can also be modified online by using dynamic tags, which provide calendar and shift schedule facilities. With the Dispatcher Manager aboard, Movicon X is a true automation call center, contributing to cutting plant expenditure above all in non-residing plant systems.

Alarm Statistics

Movicon X integrates functions for executing automatic statistical analysis on alarms. Thanks to these pre-configured statistic reports (nevertheless customizable), time totals or the frequency of alarm



occurrences on the plant can be calculated, displayed and printed on reports for the periods of times preset. The Reports supply both details of all the information relating to each alarm and graphs (histogram or pie). The analysis can then be customized as pleased, i.e. cross-referencing alarm data with production data, by relating alarm occurrences with batches, product, shift, operator, etc.



Historical Log The Historical Archive of Events or Historical Log has the job of chronologically recording all the significant plant or system events. Significant events are:

- The system events (operator’s maneuvers on system). - System diagnosis (auto-diagnosis, Drivers diagnosis) - Project alarms

The powerful Movicon X Log manager is based on ODBC and permits open databases to be obtained in relational DB (i.e. SQL Server). The historical archive display window is built (as for the Alarms Window) from a vectorial graphic object taken from the ToolBox, which the user can configure on screen as pleased, by customizing the styles and any other dynamic properties. This possibility grants powerful file management in order to represent events by date, event type, priority etc., as well as effecting SQL interrogations dynamically. The historical archive management offers recycle potentialities based on the size of the archive, which can be time based. This permits the archive size to be set on time control, leaving Movicon the job of calculating the number of corresponding records. The DB archives are completely customizable, including the type of DSN for the ODBC Manager for complete system configurability. The Log viewer can be connected to any Network Server to view the historical of one or more remote stations.

Column order in the Log viewer window, as for the alarms, can be freely setup with the mouse.



Tracing Movicon X has a powerful Tag Tracing management, to allow maximum data tracing accuracy for any applied requirement, debug or security. The Tracing manager provides a Tag Logging archive which is completely configurable. The management, as for the Movicon historicals, is based on the ODBC technology to guarantee openness and performances. Each single Tag can therefore be subjected to tracing through their properties. The tracing records every Tag value variation to the exact millisecond, as well as tracing all other relevant information such as:

• Tag Quality status, previous and current Value, Time (local or UCT), Milliseconds, Active User, Reason for changing (event responsible).

The archive, as with the Log archive, manages the recycles when the preset time has been reached.

Data Loggers The Data Logger resource in the ODBC Manager engine has been entirely renewed. The Data Loggers in Movicon become powerful and fast tools for managing Tag recordings in relational databases, according to the ODBC standard. Performances and safety have been improved by using

only one ODBC link for all Data Loggers by managing the auto-restoring of archive connections on remote servers. The recording modalities can be completely customized, to record on preset times, on event, on status change, time- band or with enabling etc. The Data Logger is at the base of the graph representation potentialities of recorded data. Included among these potentialities are Trends, Reports and Recipes.



The database objects created from the Data Logger can be declared as ‘Templates’ and saved in the Movicon graphic libraries. By using the Data Logger makes it easy to manage DB archives in standard formats that are normally complex to manage in Scada applications. The data structure is object orientated, and abides by the configuring through properties window philosophy. The tags can be scrolled with the mouse in the Data Logger (or viceversa) to automatically reach the associated column in the DB. Support deriving from the SQL language, order and filtering of

data from the database allow RecordSets of the desired data to be extracted and managed in project tags. The data archives, which support the ODBC standard, are transparently available to all the other applications. The Data Logger tool is simple and at the same time powerful. The production data or plant value trend data archives can be managed without being programmed, by establishing which tags are to be recorded and how. All the recording modalities can be set in the Properties Window such as time controlled, on events. The Movicon memory Cache management potential gives time precision recordings to the millisecond. The archived data can be linked to Trends or to Movicon Reports or simply to any type of Database management which can be executed by means of the Basic Script facilities using the DAO or the ADO (Database objects). Among the additional functionalities introduced into the Movicon X Data Loggers are the archive management with timed recycling, (leaving Movicon to carryout the necessary record calculations), sampler synchronization with system data (to provide times based on precise multiples), the possibility to record tags with ‘good qualities’ only (adding this information to the DB), and the possibility to record the average of samples carried out only. Movicon X also provides a new ‘Grid’ object in the ToolBox for displaying and/or modifying the database contents on a grid.

Recipes The Movicon X Recipe management has been totally renewed and enhanced by providing auto-configuration tools rendering the creation of production recipe files extremely simple. A new command ‘Add Recipe’ has been added to the Data Logger Resource through which you can create new ‘Recipe’ objects in the project and add the columns with the corresponding Tags.

Movicon automatically creates recipe lists and allows automatic user interface creations, which are windows with all the necessary management related graphic command objects. Like all other screens these can also be completely customized. Creating Recipes thus becomes a quick operation involving just a few mouse clicks, arranging all the files completely based on relational DB. This potentiality, unique among Scada packages, drastically reduces developing times especially in complex production activities.

The creation of recipes and archives on DB is automatic and assisted by the Wizard.



Reports Report are tools for displaying and printing filed process data from specified period. Thanks to Movicon X, the Report management has become so much easier to have, guaranteeing openness that is needed to get the Report prints adapted exactly to every requirement of the end user. In addition to accessing historical data recorded by the Data Loggers, the Reports must guarantee displays and calculated sums, totals, averages, variations when the period, production batch type, operator, shift, etc., are selected. In order that this can be made possible Movicon X has integrated a Crystal Report™ report engine, which is a very simple and widely-used tool, almost to the extent of becoming a standard requirement in data analyzing. Movicon X has integrated the Crystal Report™ 10.0 version, which offers an integrated and transparent report generator, extremely powerful and open to any kind of customization. By using the Crystal Report™ tool you can get report with professional features with just a few moves and the report files (.rpt) are completely customizable (also by end user) and can be integrated into the project. The report pages can be displayed on screen or printed on command, on event, or timeframe.

The data can however be represented on screen in simple table formats, without having to link to report files (.RPT), using the



appropriate viewer objects from the ToolBox. Each Report can be managed independently, by associating the filing parameters and the print modes through the Data Logger’s properties window. The reports, the Recipes and the Data Loggers can be customized continuously by exploiting the VBA scripts.

Trends The Movicon Trends consent to displaying the plant’s tag trends and those recorded by the Data Logger in graphs. The Trends are therefore the most efficient tool for filing, printing and graphically analyzing the plant value behaviour (generally analog values) such as temperature, pressure, levels, storage loads, chemical measures or any bulk converted into electric signals. Movicon has Dynamic and Historical Trends, which can be taken from the Toolbox as vectorial objects or taken from the Symbol library as templates. The Movicon X Trends are among one of the most powerful and open ones currently on the market. As objects they can be completely configured and animated as drawings, they can also be used as symbol parts or templates and saved in libraries. The Trends allow the operator to historicize data in .CSV format, MsExcel™ interpretation, or linked to the Data Loggers ODBC register engines.

The latest generation of Vectorial Trends allow trends to be represented on charts based on preset time periods, the minimum, maximum, average value of the selected variables to be represented



and also permit numerous graphical potentialities such as the selection of variables to be associated to the tracer, rotation, trace trend, chart type etc. Specific commands permit the operator to select data, time periods, zoom in/out, customize scales, move the mouse pointer and read numeric values of pointed data. There are no limits to how many values, represented in the Viewer window, can be traced and all the properties and pens can be changed in runtime. The Trends are provided with VBA interfaces through which you can interact with by using scripts and modify displays, historically log and manage files in runtime allowing you to customize and save trends as templates in the Movicon graphics libraries.

Security and CFR21 Part 11 Movicon X has completely renewed its protection concepts of providing a complete and powerful security and password management, by further simplifying the strict FDA CFR21 Part11 normatives support which the previous Movicon version also conformed to. In Movicon X, all the necessary normative requirements have been integrated in the platform to create FDA valid applications with great simplicity and without resorting to operating system functions. The Movicon X security management provides an unlimited number of users to be setup with command access permission either in hierarchical levels (1024 levels) or in access areas (16 access areas non-hierarchical). This enables security to be either pyramidal (level hierarchy) or independent from levels (areas). Movicon also provides the option to share with domain users of the



operating system or of a Windows NT/2000/XP server, in the applied project. So when the password management is activated, the project will be able to acknowledge permissible users inserted and activated in the installed operating system’s domain or in a server station domain. Movicon admits mixed configurations, being either users inserted on the project list or users coming from the NT/2000/XP domain. Among the properties that can be assigned to users are time controlled auto-LogOff, passwords with time-out, password change to Log On user, VBA scripts automatically executable upon Log On/Log Off events of each user. In addition to this the properties expressly provide protection according to the regulations requested by CFR21 Part11, making projects easier to create in compliance to this requirements. The system also supports automatic Audit Trail recording (DB Trace with operator comments). The Movicon password management does not require any programming and can be enabled or disabled by the programmer as pleased. The users can also receive profiles relating to event notifications, by indicating (for user groups or for individual users) the telephone or mobile number for receiving vocal calls or SMS, an E-mail address and Fax number etc.

Operating System Access

The Movicon X security management has remarkably improved Windows operating system custom access. The following properties can be set up in projects as required:

- Disable desktop - Disable Task Bar or Start button only - Disable Task Manager - Disable Ctrl+Alt+Del keys - Disable switching (Alt+Tab, Alt + Esc) keys - Disable and hide system clock

Movicon is the latest frontier when it comes to ensuring security where CFR21 Part11 ready projects are extremely simple to create.

Project Protection

As stated at the beginning Movicon projects are completely based on XML files and therefore are open. In order to guarantee their protection the projects have been provided with the option to encrypt project files and/or project resource files. By activating this option the project files are automatically encrypted with 128 bit algorithm coding, protecting the project from any undesired access. This operation is also reversible.



Logic and Scripts Logic and scripts, in a Scada/HMI platform, allow calculations and functions to be executed as well as any kind of customizing needed to make any applications meet the necessary demands made of it. Apart from the scripts, it would be appropriate to highlight the fact that Movicon provides three programming languages: VBA, PLC Logic and Synapsis. In this way each user will be able to build functional logic within his/her project safeguarding their own know-how.

VBA Scripts Movicon has incorporated a VBA engine within (Visual Basic for Application™) which allows you to program VBA script codes, to integrate functions and Dialog Boxes according to the all the modalities similar to Visual Basic ™. This possibility, highly welcomed by many developers who already know and use its potentiality in the programming environment, allows you to open new endless horizons in supervision and process control applications.

Movicon integrates the VBA language supporting multithreading, safe modes and parameterization. Other numerous tools include debug and multithread priority features.



The VBA language integrated in Movicon is particularly powerful. The VBA scripts support Multithreading for synchronized or asynchronized execution of parallel tasks, OLE or OCX automation for interfacing with other applications, DDE for exchanging dynamic data, ADO technology for direct access to databases and Windows API for interacting with the operating system. Furthermore, the Movicon technology permits VBA Scripts associability (events, properties, methods) to graphic symbols, alarms, trends and the other resources so that the codes associated to symbols can be kept and reused when they are saved the library to become ‘Power Templates’ and used in other projects. The VBA scripts can exploit ‘public’ functions and codes with a renewed and enhanced way, where each script can refer to the code of another script with the appropriated parameterization commands so that they can be shared. In addition to this, the scripts can also be ‘child’ project resources.

The VBA scripts can be activated and executed with the following modes:

• on command associated to an object • on event generated by a symbol • on intervention thresholds associated to a Tag • on logic conditions in the General logic • time control • at project startup • at LogOn/LogOff of Users • from other VBA scripts



By using these functions within Movicon in a VBA™ compactable standard environment you can practically create any type of automation application at the highest level. The Movicon VBA engine, in addition to all the fully supported VBA™ functions, has its own functions (API) for system interaction.

Logic IL

Movicon provides a Logic interpreter for managing and combining system and plant tags just like those of a normal PLC with a language instruction list (IL). The task, called Logic IL, has a powerful set of logic instructions, confrontations, arithmetic, mathematics and graphics, for managing Tags and variables. The IL Logic program is executed by Movicon in background, cyclically like a normal PLC, with logic timer settable in milliseconds, or different tasks can be associated to any screen or graphic object. The Movicon Logic IL is very useful for logic programming in Scada with the PLC philosophy, without the need of advanced language know-how such as VBA. The Win32 operating systems are not deterministic, while the Windows CE operating systems are. Therefore IL Logic can be executed in Windows CE projects as real-time, and by all means feasible to plan HMI applications with Movicon CE which execute PLC logic and I/O management integrated as well: In this way the normal PLC can be substituted with Movicon with all the effects, for non-critical applications. However the Logic IL resource can always be used (also together with VBA scripts) for various tasks, such as calculations, formulas, screen page activation on system request, supply information to PLC (i.e. actual time, the page being displayed, the key being pressed etc.), or further more the formula or mathematic calculation results of logic variables can be returned to the plant’s PLC unable to carry out the executions itself.



Synapses Language

The Synapses represent an integrated programming language innovation. Movicon X has introduced a new type of visual language in function blocks, by exploiting the VBA basic potentialities.

This philosophy provides the user with a ready-made functional block library, which can be used in screens according to symbol graphics editing concepts. Customized functional blocks can be added to the library by simply editing symbols and assigning them with functionalities. The functional blocks can be linked together with the ‘child’ block according to the classical FDA methods (Functional Block Diagram), in addition to this each block has properties, methods and events further enhancing its usage. The Synapses are therefore an extremely powerful graphical and visual language due to the customizability of the functional blocks which are very simple to edit graphically. The advantages deriving from the visual editing are:

• Greater simplicity in planning in functional blocks • Greater simplicity in sequential logic • Predisposition for batch logic sequences • Possibility to also modify the values on-line

The synapses represent a new concept in programming, being simple, powerful and flexible.



Integrated Functions Movicon X provides numerous platform-integrated functionalities, to render your projects extremely complete and a formidable tool for any requirement whatsoever.

Texts and Change Language

Movicon supports the Change Language On Line. All the project texts, alarms, static or dynamic strings can be updated in function with the desired language without having to do a restart. The change language command can be executed on command or on event. The project texts (strings), residing in the Strings Editor, can be imported or exported with the simple ‘Copy&Paste’ functions. The change language can be activated instantaneously at any moment from the menu bar in programming mode. The Unicode property can be activated in the project to support Unicode characters for Asiatic languages.

Schedulers and Event Objects

Movicon X provides a Command Scheduler resource, which is a tool that allows repetitive commands to be automated periodically. In this resource you can configure when a command is to be executed (or list of commands) in function with the time schedule or customized calendar. Also in this case the settings are put into effect through the properties window. Movicon also provides programmable scheduler



graphics and a ‘Calendar Programmer’ module whose functions are completely customizable in runtime and particularly handy in Building Automation applications. The Event objects can be used in Movicon X projects or associating commands or command lists on event relating to Tags. By using these objects you can execute commands automatically in function with the Tags status changes (events), without using logic. A tag can change the value of another tag or execute other commands by using the object techniques.

Charts

The Movicon charts are particular objects, which graphically and dynamically show tag arrays in bi-three-dimensional 3D XY charts. The charts, that can be inserted free-hand onto any screen, have special configurations for setting all the styles. The association of tags (up to eight for each chart) consent various execution modes:

• Dynamic Refresh • Time controlled Refresh • Refresh on Event

Tag Scaling

Movicon X allows Tag values to be converted directly through the properties of each Tag by performing linear or non-linear value scaling. The Tag’s converted value will therefore be calculated instead of its



raw value. Movicon also provides a Tag Scaling resource, which is a very powerful tool that can convert any value entering from the field into engineering units on a linear or non-linear scale. When given a tag with min. and max. input values Movicon will automatically convert them into the scale desired. When using Non Linear scaling, the values with non-linear behaviour will be broken up into a series of segments and extended along a theoretical line (i.e. conic tank levels).

Touch-Screen

The touch-screen has now become a common feature in HMI systems. Movicon X is therefore fully equipped with all the functionalities needed for automatically managing tools for editing numeric and alphanumeric characters without the aid of the keyboard. Special commands, which can be associated to any command object, permit the virtue keyboard to automatically display in association to the Tags desired, where the operator can type the values desired to be attributed to the Tag when confirmed. The touch-screen can be set with parameters either for limiting entries (min-max) or for function key language.



Connectivity The connectivity is at the base of every Scada/HMI platform where is it absolutely necessary for information to enter and exit projects in different operating modes that are arranged and organized in your applications in the form of Tags. Movicon X provides the maximum connectivity you can find today’s world, with high-efficiency and performance tools.

I/O Drivers

Movicon X has completely renewed the I/O driver concept, by providing a completely renewed communication driver library with exclusive technology. The new Movicon X drivers are based on the highly efficient Thread Pooling concept, which noticeably enhance performances even more compared to the already hi-velocity drivers of the previous technology.

The drivers automatically communicate with devices for tags being used in projects. Among some of the functionalities introduced in the new drivers you will find:

Automatic Tag Importing

Thanks to this feature, the user can directly import all or part of an existing PLC project tag into the project, without having to set the tags in the supervision project and thus saving time and reducing the risk of errors. Importing (available for Simatic S7, Rockwell,



Mitsubishi and others) consents the immediate creation of Tag databases with the relative connection properties to device addresses.

MultiStation The new Movicon X drivers allow you to setup various stations on different communication channels (even when point-to-point) consenting communication with various PLCs with the same driver even for those with point-to-point serial protocols.

Bridging The new Movicon X drivers support the Bridging function, being the possibility to let other users exploit the Scada connections to PLCs via modem for doing any programming operations on the PLC (i.e. Teleservice). In this way any programming can be done to the PLC by using only one communication port on the PC.

Test Cable This simple functionality saves you a great deal of time as you only need to press a Movicon X key to run a PLC connection test. This enables the user to verify if there are any connections, cable or device configuration problems straight away to avoid carrying out any communication debug operations later on.

Debug All the drivers allow you to enable the debug functions, which provide the programmer to trace and monitor all the information exchanged by the device, by managing the appropriate log files. This allows a complete communication debug management.



OPC Client and Server The OPC technology (OLE for Process Control) is essential to guarantee openness and connectivity to any industrial automation system. Progea is an active member of the OPC Foundation consortium and participates in accordance with the new OPC specifications. As a consequence Movicon X completely conforms to this technology and is certified as “OPC DA and OPC XML DA Compliant” whether as Client or as Server. The OPC AE (Alarms & Events) technology is integrated in Movicon in the Alarms Viewer objects for acquiring and viewing alarms and events dispatched by the OPC AE Server. Movicon also introduces, the new OPC XML DA technology thanks to which the OPC connections can exploit the new XML and Web Services technologies, allowing a secure and real distribution of connections on public networks (internet). No other Scada product has ever been so integrated with such OPC technology.

ODBC Real-Time

The ODBC technology (Open Database Connectivity) has been integrated in Movicon not only for recording historicals in open relational DB format. Movicon provides a feature being the only one of its kind: real-time ODBC connectivity. In the Tag properties, you can set (in read, write or read-write) the tag’s connection to a database table in real-time and bidirectional mode. By doing this it will become extremely easy to distribute information externally, such as business information systems (MES) which are usually based on Relational DB technology (SQL Server, Oracle, etc). Data refresh times can also be set for each tag (a default time of 1000 ms. has been set). A column with the variable name and a column with the real-time value will be displayed in the DB table. All this is managed automatically, even for ODBC links to the database.

XML

As Movicon X is based on XML technology, data notification has also been provided by means of XML files. It is due to this feature that the users can enable functionalities for which the values of Tags can be made available in XML files in real-time. This further demonstrated how Movicon X guarantees the maximum connectivity conceivable in today’s world.



Networking The Movicon X Network Services are without doubt the most innovative and technological feature of the platform. The Movicon X networking has been totally redesigned, by inserting unrivalled functionalities for any client/server architecture on local or geographic network.

Network Services

The Movicon X projects can be completely configured with network services. The introduced technology has improved performances due to the additional kernel optimization and the totally ‘exception-based’ structure. A Movicon server project lets you customize your Ethernet connectivity, even down to every small detail, through the Network Services properties consenting total adaptability to network administrators of dispatching notification messages in any type of architecture. Among other things, the project also provides the option to encrypt packets in transit, to tighten access only to a certain range of IP address, to manage aliases of server or client names, to manage the routing of packets to other stations not visible on the in net, trace debug and log traffic modalities and many other properties configurable through the usual properties window.



TCP, UDP and HTTP Protocols

Movicon X has introduced two additional protocols, UDP and HTTP to the already existing TCP-IP protocol for distributed projects in network connections. Thanks to this option, the user has more possibilities with which he/she can design and adapt their application to the architecture and business client requirements.

Client Rules

Thanks to the new networking technology, Movicon has also introduced the ‘Client Rules’ concept, which means the capability of defining how the Tags (singularly or in groups) are to be connected to the servers. This actually allows you to assign a ‘Client Rule’, which is setup in the project, to each Tag in the Tags’ Networking properties. In this way, the Tags will connect to the server according to the set modes in the Client Rule. An example would be giving max. or min. connection priorities, for security reasons, to specified user groups only to connect with remote access (RAS) or other. Tags dynamically linked in network between servers and clients (read only, write only or read/write) can then be totally adapted to the necessities requested by the company or production plants, to achieve perfect adaptability of the network administrator to the specific requirements entailed.

RAS Stations

RAS stations setup in Movicon X projects allow you to set the properties of all the RAS (Remote Access Server) parameters of the operating system, so that connecting up in net is also automatic and transparent for remote stations linked up together via modem. This interesting feature makes sure that the project’s Network Services use the RAS Stations to link two stations together in automatic mode, via modem, when the specified variables go into use. The Networking connectivity is also guaranteed when the network provides non-permanent connections (modems) with PCs.

Web Services

The Web Services has opened up new technological horizons in the connectivity world between different applications on public network (internet). Movicon X has adopted and integrated the Web Services technology into its own system, which is based on the emerging XML and SOAP technologies. As the Web Services is a Firewall Friendly technology it allows information to be transported in any type of network with the uppermost security. The advantages offered by the Web Services are



therefore essentially performances (XML) with multiplatforms (SOAP) and connectivity with firewalls. The new OPC XML DA specifications are based on the Web Services technology thanks to which industrial applications can communicate with each other on the web in realtime mode, superseding any limits set by the DCOM technology on which the previous OPC SA specifications were based. Among other things, Progea is the only one in the world up till now, who supports this technology in C++ native codes, purposely developed to do away with the Microsoft® .NET framework installation, being extremely heavy for clients. Movicon X offers all the advantages of adopting the Web Services technologies, which are indispensable for those companies who want to break through the current imposed limits to put their data on the net with the uppermost security without having to open any firewalls as required with the DCOM applications.



Redundancy Movicon supports the Redundancy functionalities, ‘Hot Backup’, in a complete automatic and transparent fashion for critical applications where data security and integrity is an absolute must. The Master Server is linked to the Slave Server in Ethernet network. When the Master is cut off the Slave automatically takes over with communicating and managing the plant, storing data according to the modes set in the Master. When the master re-enters into action it automatically takes control again of the plant by synchronizing its historical data with the slave’s and updating the alarm situation. The Movicon X redundancy has been further enhanced in handling sychronization and in handling synchronic functionalities supported o both the Master and Slave servers.

Remote Control and Remote Access The remote access to data, as mentioned in the previous sections, has been given special attention to by Movicon X. The remote control requirements, the result of experience gained during the previous years, have been integrated with innovative use modalities, which render all the connection activities automatic and transparent. The remote access to PLCs (serial connections) has been integrated directly into the communication drivers, where the TAPI properties are used to set the connection parameters to the device, independently of the number of devices to be connected at the same time (with the same driver or with different drivers) and possible modem port sharing for other uses. The remote access between PC and PC can support both the networking (RAS Stations) and the OPC XML DA technologies in automatic and are extremely user-friendly. Using the MovBridge product (GSM Gateway based on OPC and SMS) with Movicon X also widens the operating potentialities in remote controlling.

System Openness and API Movicon X, as all the previous Movicon versions, offers the vastest openness guaranty for which Progea’s philosophy is based on. Movicon X is entirely based on XML, therefore the project (concerning XML files) or part of it can also be edited with other Editors. OEM producers can actually realize their own project configuration environments to create vertical applications (i.e. for their clients), without worrying about integrating other functionalities with Movicon in the future. By using XML you can also access to the project’s real-time variables (in read only). Thanks to the VBA technology you can completely customize any platform functionality by using the scripts. The VBA language, which is guaranteed in Movicon as true multithreading, offers hundreds of additional methods and properties, compared to the already complete previous versions, which are fully open to any kind of customization. Access is also given to the operating system and therefore database text files (ADO), use of external libraries (DLL) or third party objects (ActiveX) by means of using the VBA scripts. The ActiveX technology can also be managed graphically on Movicon screens for which another function has been introduced to open screens in ‘Safe Mode’. This had been done so Movicon opens the screen in another process, guaranteeing entire application stability against any corruption due to the instability of ActiveX controls if it should occur. The OPC technology is another guarantee of openness. Being disposed with a Client and Server OPC platform guarantees connectivity with any other application and/or device for automation. The new OPC XML DA technology extends this concept towards the connectivity and web-based openness. Movicon also supports ODBC real-time connectivity, which is the only one of its kind. Thanks to this feature, project Tags can be remapped in a external relational database (i.e. SQL Server, Oracle), in read only, write only or read-write. This powerful item in the Movicon Tag properties offers the possibility to transparently open project information to business information systems or to any other application.



Debugger On Line Software platform Debug tools are fundamental for effectively reducing startup times and plant system settings. Movicon has always distinguished itself for project debugging effectiveness and thoroughness, which today has been totally renewed and enhanced with the Movicon X version. The entire project can be completely traced and monitored, by using the debug tool on-line and by using configurable Log files.

Project Debug OnLine The Movicon integrated debugger lets you view in various modes, the logic states of Tags in real-time as well as a series of real-time information on the project being run. By using the Debugger Online not only can you view the Tag values but you can force them to execute simulations as well. It can also supply all the project information in ‘real-time’ such as which OPC or TCP/UDP/HTTP connection is active, active user, number of active alarms, historical ‘cache memory’ status, spooler status etc.

Project Statistics The debugger consents you to view chart statistics reporting the use of system resources by the various project components, to quickly analyze how much the resources are being used to assess ways of improving performances.



Logic Debugging The debugger allows you to view logic programs (General Logic or VBA scripts) by displaying tag status and results in ‘real-time’. This allows you also to verify which logic has been processed and analyze scansion times in order to manage Break points carried out in step by step executions of VBA logic or Synapsis logic. Tag Debugging Each tag provides the option, in its properties, to enable the complete tracing of data managed and the relating tag quality status, to manage tracing files that log Tag status. The tracing provides all the information relating not only to value events in respect to its history, but also maximum accuracy in times, which resource provoked the status change, the status quality and other information useful to get a complete and thorough debugging. Networking Debugging The network Services allow log files to be managed which have been customized for tracing and analyzing the dispatching of packets in networking, to get a complete monitoring of the net so that its behavior can be analyzed and assessed to improve performances. Cross Reference List The Cross Reference List permits you to obtain and document all the information relating to the tags being used in the project, whether by symbolic name or absolute address. Through the window reporting the list of tags being used, you will be able to see where and how they are being used and you can open the resource or the logic directly on the point in which the tag is being used by double clicking it.



Web-enabled architecture The Movicon X Web Client technology has been completely redesigned based on completely different technologies while keeping the already high performance and functionality features of its previous versions. The new technology is based on Java midlet and applet instead of the activeX component as before. Support to the new technology has been made possible by the complete review of the networking introduced in Movicon X. Today’s data dispatching is based on real-time web-based technologies such as the Web Services and SOAP based on XML.

Thanks to today’s new technology, the Web Client Enterprise is capable of accessing the plant from any client station, whether being based on Microsoft operating systems or Linux platforms. In addition to this the new Web Client also has a J2ME midlet purposely designed for the



JavaPhones telephones which can be to access the plant system as Web clients by using mobile phones and PocketPcs (Windows Mobile). This extremely innovative feature makes Movicon Web Client technology the most advanced technology available for remote access or via web access to your plant.

Thin Client Architecture The Web Client applet allows access to the server from any internet browser, with any platform due to the Java features. The Web Client technology can be considered a Thin Client for its extreme compactness and lightness so much so it can support as possible clients, mobile devices such as Palm or mobile phones, of the recent generation, with J2ME support (Javaphones). The Web Client Enterprise consents to two-way communication with the Server station and to display and monitor and even control the plant system with the desired commands. By using the access menu the user (with a preset access level) can display and interact with the server screens, display and silence alarms, monitor the status of variables, view the historical and Data Loggers. All this safeguards multiusership as each connected user is completely independent of the other and the server. A great deal of attention has also been given to improve the performances where, for instance, only the changed part of the image is sent by the server due to the SVG image raster.

The adoption of the emergent SOAP and Web Services technologies guarantees the user safe and free circulation of of data without corrupting the presence or openness of firewalls, placed to safeguard against external access to the company’s network. Terminology XML

Extensible Markup Language

Meta language in text format, simple e flexible, defined by the SGML (ISO 8879) standard. Originally designed to evolve the HTML potentiality, today it is affirmed for its strategic use in exchanging data not only between web applications but anywhere, thanks to its simple, multiplatform tag structure.

OPC

OLE for Process Control

OPC is a standard for communication and connectivity between software applications, defined by the OPC Foundation. OPC DA bases its technology on DCOM for sharing data. OPC XML DA is the new specification which is based on SOAP and on Web Services for transferring and sharing information by communicating on a web architecture.

ODBC

Open Data Base Connectivity

A Microsoft technology through which applications can gain access or record data on relational Databases on a network. The ODBC drivers are present in Microsoft operating systems or can be purchased from DB producers or third parties.

SOA

Service Oriented Application

This architecture is composed of services and user services that communicate through a series of interfaces, which are well defined and wholly independent of each other, through the Web Services.

SOAP

Simple Object Access Protocol

This is considered the protocol for implementing Web services of the next generation. It is based on XML and allows applications to communicate between each other, independently of hardware and software and program languages used for developing it. SOAP, used and supported by the main software producers (Microsoft, Sun, IBM), is the only firewall friendly protocol and supersedes any connectivity limits without excluding safety.

VBA

Visual Basic for Application

This is the most well-known and used language worldwide. It used the Visual Basic syntaxes for managing script executions within applications. VBA™ is a Microsoft language, while the VBA language guarantees 100% compatibility.

Web Services

These are Software components which can be accessed through the normal protocols in use on Internet (HTTP, XML, SMTP, etc...). The advantages offered by the Web Services are being able to use a basic set of protocols available anywhere, to allow interoperability between diverse platforms while maintaining the possibility to use the most advanced and specialized protocols for carrying out specific tasks. XML and SOAP are the basis of the Web Services.

This is a message orientated protocol used as an industrial standard to simplify application integration with wireless networks such as GSM, TDMA, CDMA and PDC. It is widely used in the telecommunication industries and mobile devices.
