Preschool Developmental Screening Edmonton and Area
•Identify children with delayed development to allow for earliest
possible intervention
• 10% to 15% children demonstrate developmental delays,
• <50% of children access early intervention programs)

• ASQ is a parent completed questionnaire
• Available in two month intervals from 2 to 24 months, three monthintervals from 24 to 36 months, 6 month intervals from 36 to 60months
• Areas addressed: communication, gross motor, fine motor,problem solving, personal-social
• 76% to 91% concurrent validity, 72% overall sensitivity, 86%overall specificity

• Parent fills out ASQ at 18 month immunization visit
• Multi-Cultural Health Brokers work with parents inthree cultural groups

• Advertising (posters, brochures, mail out to 36 month oldchildren) to phone in to request ASQ and project information
• Community partners give project information and ASQ toparents who send in to project staff for scoring and follow-up
• Information fair and children’s party where ASQ is available
• Multi-Cultural Health Brokers identify and work with parents ofthree target cultural groups

• All parents given an ASQ are invited to Playing to Learn aboutvalue and development opportunities in play
• Any concerns identified by ASQ, parent or staff are followed-upwith a phone call to discus results and provide strategies andcommunity resources
• Home visits (2 to 4) to provide further strategies, secondaryscreens, referral if appropriate
• Family centered philosophy allows modification to best fit familyand culture
