GEOSS Architecture for Information Sharing

• The GEOSS information sharing vision is becoming achieved via the International Standards Organization (ISO)/Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).

• Simple pipes have been achieved, but “content is king”.

• The only thing standing in the way of a global GEOSS information sharing architecture is the implementation of ISO/OGC SOA atop existing processing, exploitation and dissemination ground segments and sensor gateways.

Sharing Within the SensorWeb

• User-centric, social network-centric• Interest and intent of people/social networks

are posed as queries and alerts• Queries and alerts are data• Processing chains are human capital parading

as data• Data must find data, data must find users,

users must find each other

Sharing Beyond the Commons

• GEOSS assumes a global data commons.

• Not all of the best data will exist in the commons.

• To successfully share beyond the commons, we will need to succeed at G-Commerce.

Sharing Data on Socio-Cultural Dynamics

• If the human footprint is the largest source of global impacts…

• And, if the GEO Societal Benefits Areas are largely tied to long term human welfare…

• Then it is important to geospatially- and temporally- manage and share data on socio-cultural dynamics as part of GEOSS.

Achieving “Change Intelligence”• We don’t just share for the sake of sharing. We share because we

have a common mission.

• With the flood of data/information/knowledge available to us, we cannot just open the doors to sharing and expect everything to work itself out.

• The long standing remote sensing paradox of “coverage versus resolution” actually plagues us far beyond the world of remote sensing, and as such, we need some organizing concept to drive our information sharing strategy.

• I like to call this “Change Intelligence.”

Information Sharing ChallengesRequire Innovation

• Sharing all the way to the sensor.• Sharing beyond the commons.• Sharing data on socio-cultural dynamics• Achieving “Change Intelligence”

These challenges require innovation if we are the realize the broader goals of GEOSS.
