    Top Stories:

'Big Leap' Towards Curing Blindness in Stem Cell Study(BBC) - The prospect of reversing blindness has made asignificant leap, according to scientists in the UK. An animal studyin the journal Nature Biotechnology showed the part of the eyewhich actually detects light can be repaired using stem cells. Theteam at Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London sayhuman trials are now, for the first time, a realistic prospect.Experts described it as a "significant breakthrough" and "hugeleap" forward.

Genetically Modified Cows Produce 'Human' Milk

(Telegraph) - Scientists have successfully introduced humangenes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the sameproperties as human breast milk. Human milk contains highquantities of key nutrients that can help to boost the immunesystem of babies and reduce the risk of infections. The scientistsbehind the research believe milk from herds of geneticallymodified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milkand formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being aninferior substitute. They hope genetically modified dairy productsfrom herds of similar cows could be sold in supermarkets.

whether it's space tourism or the electric car -- but his latestproject, mysteriously dubbed the Hyperloop, may be morerevolutionary than anything he's done. It started with a simplepromise: the ability to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco inhalf an hour. As time went on, Musk added more. It would below-friction, and use such minimal power that the entire thingcould be run on electricity from solar panels installed above thetracks. It would use small pods, leaving "whenever you arrive"instead of cleaving to a schedule like an airliner. He's promised tounveil his alpha design for the project in just under a month'stime, but already, observers are speculating on exactly how thisnext-generation transportation scheme would work.

The Netherlands is Building a Country-Wide EV ChargingNetwork (Fast Company Co.EXIST) - Two hundred goldenarches are about to appear at Dutch roadsides. But they aren't thelatest addition to a burger chain's empire. They're charging pointsfor electric vehicles -- part of perhaps the most comprehensivenetwork in the world. "Range anxiety" has hampered adoption of EVs everywhere. But, after 2015, that should be less of a problem

in the Netherlands. Built by a startup called Fastned, the stationswill ensure drivers are no more than 50 miles from a "fast"charging point.

Innovation Isn't an Idea Problem (Harvard BusinessReview) - When most organizations try to increase theirinnovation efforts, they always seem to start from the sameassumption: "we need more ideas." They'll start talking about theneed to "think outside the box" or "blue sky" thinking in order tofind a few ideas that can turn into viable new products or systems. However, in most organizations, innovation isn't hampered by alack of ideas, but rather a lack of noticing the good ideas alreadythere. It's not an idea problem; it's a recognition problem.

Chinese Carmakers Go Global (Forbes) - You may not seeChinese cars in showrooms in the United States, Germany or Italyanytime soon, but you're liable to see them everywhere else youtravel. While emissions, safety and quality requirements in themost developed countries of the world may be too difficult forChina's local car makers to overcome in the near term, they arefinding receptive audiences in other emerging markets. Basedupon our recent review of Chinas car makers, we found thatnearly all have aggressive plans to sell cars outside the country.

Why Citizen Developers are the Future of Programming(ReadWrite) - When Google executives look at prospective hires'portfolios instead of test scores, it expands the playing fieldbeyond "anyone with a degree" to "anyone with skills." Google nolonger cares whether you picked up coding in school or just byteaching yourself, so long as you have the work and talent to backit up. It's a phenomenon that the tech world is calling the rise of the "citizen developer." A phrase coined by technology researchfirm Gartner, the citizen developer is "an end user who createsnew business applications for consumption by others usingdevelopment and runtime environments sanctioned by corporateIT." Or, in less of a mouthful, a non-traditionally educatedprogrammer who uses the same skills as the formally trained pros.

Detroit Bankruptcy Could Hit Millions of Public SectorRetirees (NBC) - With its bankruptcy filing, the city of Detroithas entered uncharted territory. It's a dark place that no majorU.S. city has ever gone -- but that could change. Despite theuncertainties surrounding whats expected to be a hard foughtlegal battle, the outcome promises to inflict more pain on Detroit'salready-beleaguered city workers, residents, businesses, creditorsand investors. The case will also set a legal precedent that will bewatched closely by other major cities across the country

struggling under the weight of years of accumulated debt andunderfunded pensions covering millions of public sector retirees.

9 Reasons Why Brazil is the New America (BusinessInsider) - Brazil has something of an identity crisis right now. Asprotests continue, the world has been exposed to the massivesocial unrest in the country over inequality, corruption, and theadverse economics of preparing to host global sporting events likethe upcoming World Cup. Still, as one of the so-called BRICcountries -- a term that has become less vogue as investors takea wider look at emerging market countries -- Brazil is uniquelypositioned to keep growing.

Arctic Thawing Could Cost the World $60 Trillion, Scientists

Say (Guardian) - Rapid thawing of the Arctic could trigger acatastrophic "economic timebomb" which would cost trillions of dollars and undermine the global financial system, say a group of economists and polar scientists. Governments and industry haveexpected the widespread warming of the Arctic region in the past20 years to be an economic boon, allowing the exploitation of newgas and oilfields and enabling shipping to travel faster betweenEurope and Asia. But the release of a single giant "pulse" of methane from thawing Arctic permafrost beneath the EastSiberian sea "could come with a $60tn [39tn] global price tag,"according to the researchers who have for the first time quantified

the effects on the global economy. Even the slow emission of amuch smaller proportion of the vast quantities of methane lockedup in the Arctic permafrost and offshore waters could triggercatastrophic climate change and "steep" economic losses, theysay.

Models Point to Rapid Sea-Level Rise from Climate Change(Sydney Morning Herald) - Sea levels could rise by 2.3 metresfor each degree celsius that global temperatures increase and theywill remain high for centuries to come, according to a new studyby the leading climate research institute. Anders Levermann saidhis study for the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

was the first to examine evidence from climate history andcombine it with computer simulations of contributing factors tolong-term sea-level increases: thermal expansion of oceans, themelting of mountain glaciers and the melting of the Greenland andAntarctic ice sheets. Scientists say global warming is responsiblefor the melting ice.

DNA Storage: The Code That Could Save Civilisation (BBC) -Living things have been storing information in DNA since the dawnof life, including the instructions for building every human, animal,

bacterium and plant. In terms of information density, DNAoutclasses anything weve been able to invent. A single gram cancontain as much data as 3 million CDs. All of the worlds datawould fit in the back of a minivan. And once encoded into DNA,information is a doddle to copy. To transfer the contents of onehard disk into another, you need to hook both of them up to acomputer and wait for minutes or hours. To transfer the contentsof a tube of DNA, you dissolve it in water, suck up some of theliquid into a pipette, and squeeze it into another tube. It takesseconds.

A Quick Primer on Futurist-Level Foresight (Fast Company)- The science fiction is becoming fact. During a recent visit toGoogle headquarters, California Gov. Jerry Brown signedlegislation to allow autonomous vehicles to operate on the state'sroads. Brown touted the signing of the bill as "turning today'sscience fiction into tomorrows reality." California is the third U.S.state to legalize self-driving cars, following Nevada and Florida, where similar laws earlier were passed this year. This is just thebeginning. We need to be ready for the next set of intelligentinnovation, in any field.
