Innovation in Tech Metals Revolutionize Nylon Manufacturing

An innovation has recentlyemerged in the manufacturingprocess of nylon,which now makes use of techmetals. The Critical MaterialsInstitute (CMI), the innovationhub of the US Department ofEnergy, developed a chemicalprocess that improves upon theexisting manufacturing processof nylon, utilizing a tech metalnamed cerium.

This cerium-based metal isutilized by turning it intonano-sized particles with acatalyst named palladium inorder to createcyclohexanone, the mainingredient used in themanufacturing of nylon.

The old process of creating cyclohexanone involved an environment thatcould support both high temperature and pressure, necessitating the use ofhydrogen.

“After a through trial and error process, we finally managed to pinpoint areaction that works splendidly at room temperature as well as the ambientpressure”, said Igor Slowing a CMI scientist. “In terms of cost, this newprocess is a massive plus as it needs lesser hydrogen and is far more energyefficient to produce.”

The way the Critical Material Institute is addressing this discovery is ratherunique. Addressing the concerns that exist on a global scale regarding thedemand and supply of rare tech metals; Slowing also stated; “The group ofresearchers focused on three varying catalytic reactions that are used inproduction of nylon in high volumes. Not to mention the enormousapplications it has in the industry.”

He further said, “As CMI scientists we are only looking at catalysis, so ourapproach to this particular is from a specific angle. Alternatively, the otherteams who are working on the same idea are in the quest to use as little techmetals as possible, while we, on the other hand, are trying to make the bestuse of the tech metals that can be found in nature abundantly“.
