SD Investment Priorities – Mining
Sustainable Development Technology Canada 13
The SD Investment Priorities identified seven key priority investment areas
Areas of priorities identified: • Smart mining or complete site process integration in real-
time control • Waste management and closed loop optimization • Energy efficiency: reducing energy required per unit • Enhanced extraction, processing & production: increasing
production at a decreased emission intensity • Conversion of waste into revenue or benign byproducts • Extending life or accelerating closure of a mine • Optimizing infrastructure, energy and services for remote
locations

The 6 Stages of the Mining Process
Sustainable Development Technology Canada 14
1. Geoscience – Improved Methods to Focus Mining Strategies 2. Exploration – Quantifying Valuable Mineral Deposits 3. Discovery – Evaluating Viability of Investment 4. Development – Investment, Engineering & Construction 5. Production – Extraction, Processing & Refining of Minerals 6. Reclamation – Waste Avoidance, Waste Processing, Tailing Remediation,
Mine Closure and Environmental Maintenance
The SD Investment Priorities align with three stages of the mining process
Sustainable Development Technology Canada Sustainable Development Technology Canada 15
Innovation Across the Process
- Waste Avoidance - Waste Processing - Waste-to-Product Conversion - Tailing Remediation - Mine Closure - Environmental Maintenance
SDTC has supported many demonstration projects, with a cumulative impact of 24.7 Mt of GHGs reduced and revenues of $440.7M/yr by 2020.

Bestech is developing a “Dynamic Ventilation on Demand” (DVOD), which provides an automated deep mine ventilation control system. The technology will lead to significant energy savings as well as climate change and clean air benefits. VOD has been developed to control ventilation in traffic and other purpose tunnels and will address and control air quality conditions in underground mines where gases from blasts and diesel emissions from loading equipment caused serious health risks. The software and related gas monitoring equipment developed will provide the necessary automated controlling of the mine gases. The VOD system measures vehicle emissions throughout the mine and directs ventilation only to points of need, replacing existing blanket ventilation strategies. The DVOD technology will reduce ventilation costs (in terms of energy input) by 40%.

Process Optimization and Waste Management
Yava Technologies has developed a low-cost, environmentally-friendly process that could allow producers to avoid smelting entirely while enabling the processing of low content waste rock and minimizing comminution of head ore that further reduces cost and increases the profitability of the mine. This project will see the design, building and testing of a pilot plant to produce zinc in a form that will not require further refinement, can be refined at point of extraction and could potentially be applied to recovering other metals like lead, copper, manganese, nickel and silver.

Energy Savings & Tailings Management
Cyanidation is energy-intensive and results in a large amount of highly contaminated tailings. Dundee Sustainable Technologies' are using chlorination to extract precious metals. Besides the operational savings and benefits to the environment, the process will allow the exploitation of gold deposits that are not extractable using conventional methods. The primary benefits are increased profitability by 15%, shorter processing time, reduced emissions from avoided energy consumption for conventional refining, increased mine productivity by reclaiming process waste and remediating waste ore – all of which increases the life expectancy of the mining operation.

Mining Technologies International Inc. is developing diesel electric hybrid technology in a medium size underground loader, and incorporate an advanced propulsion system to maximize efficiency and energy recovery with minimal exhaust emissions and reduced fuel consumption. The system will use advanced battery technology with high energy and power capabilities combined with a high efficiency drivetrain to minimize losses in the transfer of power to the wheels. This is expected to result in reduced operating costs, improved health and safety, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, improved environmental sustainability, while creating a market-leading product for a Canadian-owned mining equipment manufacturer.

Consortium members: Westport Research Inc. Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. Challenger Motor Freight Inc.
Westport Research Inc. is demonstrating a novel fuel injector technology which will prove the economic viability of operating heavy-duty (Class 8) trucks in a line-haul application using liquefied natural gas as the primary fuel instead of pure diesel. By using LNG, truck operators will be able to meet the upcoming low-emissions standards without incurring significant post-treatment costs.

Real-time Control, Energy Savings & Tailings Management
Canadian mining operations produce 2 million tonnes of waste rock a day. MineSense will develop their High-Frequency Electromagnetic Spectrometry (HFEMS) technology to measure the amount of a given mineral at the point of extraction, allowing operators to better sort the rock based on mineral content prior to processing, thus saving costs and requiring less energy to process the rock. Thanks to increased metal recovery, longer life of the mine and decreased environmental damage, the technology could increase the total value of the mine by as much as 50 percent, as well as revive mines considered “end of life” with a more accurate assessment of mineral content. Once widely used, this technology could save a typical base metal operation mining 10,000 tonnes of rock per day as much as 15 GWh/yr or 8.16 Mt CO2e/yr.
