CHALLENEGS FOR INDIAN TECHNOLOGY INNOVATORS

• THE POOR CONEVRSION OF GREAT IDEAS INTOVALUABLE INNOVATIONWHAT?

• FAILURE OF TRANSFORMING IDEA TO INNOVATIONCAUSES DISAPPOINTMENT OF ALL STAKEHOLDERS

• NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FALLS INTO COMAHOW?

• GOVERNMENT LABORATIES TO SMALL TECHNOLOGYSTART-UPS.WHO FACES?

• WHEN MARKET IS AHEAD OF THE TECHNLOGY AND VICE-VERSAWHEN?

• MOST EMERGING ECONOMIESWHERE?

• MOST DO NOT REALISE IMPORTANCE OF MONETIZINGVALUABLE IP

THE FOUR FACES OF AN INNOVATOR: BSKV MODEL

SUCCESSFUL INNOVATIONS ACROSS DIFFERENT DOMAIN/ INDUSTRIES HAVE FOURCOMPONENTS IN COMMON :

1• GETTING AN INSIGHTFUL IDEA

2• FIGURING OUT HOW TO CREATE VALUE OUT OF IDEA

3

• EXECUTING THE IDEA WELL

4• FINALLY MAKING IT A SUCCESS IN THE MARKET

STRENGTH OF THE VALUE PROPOSITION

HOW WELL THE IDEA HAS BEEN EXECUTED?

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS IT IN THE MARKET?

THE OPEN INNOVATION MODEL

Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) is an open source code model of discovering aNew Chemical Entity (NCE) or a New Molecular Entity (NME).

All data generated related to the discovery research will be available in the openfor collaborative input

Driven by three key parameters – OPEN DEVELOPMENT , OPEN ACCESS & OPENSOURCE

Was successfully used in the ‘Human Genome Project’ , to understand the

mechanics of Proteins , by the IT Industry , Web Technology , etc.

THE OPEN INNOVATION MODEL

OBJECTIVES

To encourage drug discovery initiatives especially for the dreaded and the neglecteddiseases of the developing countries.

To make the drugs affordable to the marginalized people of the world.

BENEFITS   Bringing together the best available minds to tackle extremely challenging diseases. Speed of innovation

Risk sharing

Affordability

ISSUES

Who will fund the project and how much ? Who will lead the project ?

Who will coordinate the project and find talents ?

Who will take it through clinical development and regulatory approval process ?

CURRENT GLOBAL INITIATIVES FOR “OPEN INNOVATION”

June 2008 GLAXOSMITHKLINE released the “GENOMIC

PROFILING DATA” for over 300 sets of cancer cell lines for THE

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE’S BIOINFORMATIC GRID

The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI)

GLAXOSMITHKLINE in collaboration with EUROPEANBIOINFORMATICS INSTITUTE and NATIONAL LIBRARY OFMEDICINE, USA has announced “Open Invitation Strategy” to

discover innovative drugs for malaria

OPEN INNOVATION IN INDIA

CSIR’s(Council for Scientific and Industrial Research ) OPENINNOVATION PROJECT – Research on tropical diseases likeTuberculosis, Malaria, Leishmaniasis.

More than 2000 people have already registered for the project.

FUTURE PROJECT- “Connect to decode”- purpose is tocompletely reannonate Mtb genome.

CONCLUSION

WHERE WE ARE

• Limited no. of scientists associated with the innovator company ,work

on a project for commercial security reasons. This consumes a lot of time and funds.

WHAT WE NEED

• Scientists and volunteers across the globe will be able to contribute tothe project . This will lead to reduction in R&D costs and will also save a

lot of time and thereby leading to cheaper drugs.
