Continuing Education Units (CEU’s)

• What type of CEU’s are offered at conference?

– Tuesday – Certified Crop Advisor (CCA)

– Wednesday – Certified Crop Advisor (CCA)

– Thursday – Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and Department of Pesticide Regulations (DPR)

• Where are the CEU sign in sheets?

– CEU sign in sheets will be in the back of each session

– There are separate forms on Thursday for the CCA and DPR credits

• Special instructions for Thursday

– PCA’s will need to pick up their scantrons in the morning before the first session of the day. They will also need

to return the scantron at the end of the day to the CEU booth. This is in addition to signing in and out of each

session.

Introduction – Why Protein?

1. Protein, it’s exciting, building blocks of our bodies

2. Plant forward – statistics, what do the numbers say, are consumers looking at increasing

consumption of plant-based foods and protein?

1. Opportunity

1. 20% of US adults, 31% of German adults and 31% of Indian adults are trying to cut down on meat consumption*

2. 26% of US adults, 12% of German adults and 41% of Indian adults are trying to increase their protein intake*

Plant protein – is uniquely positioned to help satisfy consumer demand

Nestlé Purina struck a joint development agreement with TerraVia targeting algae-based nutrition ingredients in pet food. Similarly, Unilever signed a multi-year global supply agreement with TerraVia to purchase renewable algae oils for use in personal care products.

Tyson Food bought a 5% stake in Beyond Meat, investing an undisclosed amount for the manufacturer of “Beyond Burger”, which is made from soya and peas.

Danone bought Whitewave for USD10 billion, making it the biggest deal to date in the natural and organic food industry.

Quorn, which grew by an impressive CAGR of 8% over 2011-2016, overtook Morningstar Farms by Kellogg in 2016 to become the world’s leading meat substitute brand. Quorn was acquired by Monde Nissin, the world’s largest noodle company. This might spell the entry of the brand in Asia Pacific, where it currently has no presence.

▪ Almonds and pulses are nutrient dense sources of plant-based protein that contribute to healthy and sustainable dietary patterns.

▪ Regulatory frameworks in North America can be barriers for communicating the presence of protein in whole and manufactured foods that contain pulses.

▪ Combining pulses with almonds as complementary proteins can substantially increase the level of quality protein in food to help meet thresholds that permit foods to be marketed as “sources of protein.”

▪ The opportunity for complimentary proteins can differ depending on inclusion rates of almonds and pulses and the desired outcome.

Oil extraction vs Protein flour production

Expeller press

• Efficient oil production

• Warm (high friction/shear)

• Infeed solid particles

• Low capital investment

• Wear & tear

• Continuous adjustment

• Cleaning attention point

• Coarse powders (impact shear / heat)

– Issues with solubility

• Variation in oil content

• Upgrade low value by streams

Hydraulic press

• Efficient solids production minimal impact

• Cold (no friction/shear)

• Infeed (tree)nut butters (pump able)

• Higher capital investment

• Low maintenance

• Repeatable results

• Sanitary production

• Ultrafine protein powders down to 20 micron

– High solubility /flowability / mixing properties

• Calibrated repeatable oil content (12 – 28%)

• Upgrade “waste” product
