Inner Landscapes II
A Visual Guide to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Using this PowerPoint• This material is designed to be used when being introduced
to the MBTI types. It is useful to help people discover their “best fit” type.
• These images are taken from the book “Inner Landscapes II” as a way to begin the conversation about preferences.
• The MBTI is a registered trademark of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Trust and is published by CPP Inc. (formerly Consulting Psychologist Press) who also distributes the Inventory.

What’s Important?
The MBTI - what it is…
An instrument that…• Indicates one data point about how we perceive information
and make decisions• Sorts rather than measures• Identifies preferences in four pairs
– E or I (Focus and source of energy)– S or N (Preference for acquiring information)– T or F (Preference for making decisions)– J or P (Preferred way of interacting with the world)
• Looks at 16 patterns or codes
What it is not…
• The single way to identify “best fit” type• Based on dictionary definitions of the terms• A tool to measure aptitude, skill or learning• Good or bad• An excuse for bad behaviour• A reason to stereotype, label or judge people• An explanation for everything
Four Pairs
• Extraversion / Introversion– Focus of Energy
• Sensing / Intuition– Ways of taking in information
• Thinking / Feeling– Ways to make decisions
• Judging / Perceiving– Relating to the outer world
One of each pair
• Extraversion / Introversion

Focus of Energy
Extraversion – Painting Inspiration• This painting captures the
energy, “busyness” and noise of Extraversion. Its title “Can I Run Something by You?” speaks volumes about how people process out loud. A person with a preference for Extraversion seeks out this external world of people and things to provide them with energy and stimulation..
Introversion – Painting Inspiration• This painting was done as a
contrast to the painting that illustrates Extraversion. It was inspired by the comment a person with a preference for Introversion made about life being ‘shades of gray”. Do you have a sense of where you are most comfortable – Introversion or Extraversion?
Ways to take in information
Sensing – Painting Inspiration• People with a preference for
Sensing like to work with what’s tangible, factual and practical. They would rather deal with the “Nuts and Bolts” of a situation than some theoretical construct. This painting is filled with all kinds of minutiae. Are you comfortable with this kind of practical attention to details?
Intuition- Painting Inspiration• Notice the many threads the
person with a preference for Intuition follows. At some point a new pattern or insight leaps into awareness. The cry “Eureka’ symbolizes the instantaneous aspect of this awareness. Do you need to see the data or something concrete or do you just know?
Ways to make decisions
Thinking – Painting Inspiration• This concept for this drawing
was copied from a sketch done by a person wanting to show the relationship between Thinking and Feeling for a Thinking person. People with a preference for Thinking base their decisions on logic and objective analysis of cause and effect.
Feeling – Painting Inspiration• People are central to this
painting. This particular piece was originally done in greyer tones and repainted after feedback from a person with a Feeling preference helped me to understand the importance of a softer palette. Which of these is your preferred way of making decisions - Thinking or Feeling?
Relating to the Outer World
Judging – Painting Inspiration• This painting shows lines and
circles arranged into a pattern that is orderly and that makes sense of an otherwise random series of marks. The muddied gray background in this painting has structured shapes overlaid to create a sense of order. Is your world decided and organized?
Perceiving – Painting Inspiration
• This painting shows lines and circles which have been laid down quite randomly. The title of this piece is “Emerging” and it shows how at this moment in time there is no urgency for closure. It rather invites the viewer to stay open to see what else may occur.
