• 1200 A.D. Rhine river changed flowing directions

• 1828 Beginning of the excavation work for a new harbor connecting the city to the Rhine

• 1889 the port was taken over by the city of Duisburg

• For more than 80 years the Inner Harbor remains the main regional port for wood and grain

• In the 1970s decline of commercial importance

• In the 1980s revival of the port function failed

• 1989 International BuildingExhibition Emscher Park

• 1991 International urban planningcompetition - Masterplan by Sir Norman Foster

• 1992 Inner Harbor Duisburg Development Company established

• 1995 Inner Harbor is purchased bythe City of Duisburg

• Initial symbol for structural changein Duisburg

• The “good“ news drew regional and national attention to Duisburg
