S o it turns out New Idea was right all along: Kate Middleton is pregnant!

Of course, if you splash it across your front page every week, you’ll get it right eventually.

To use an oldie but a goodie, New Idea has No Idea.

But it, and hundreds of other gossip magazines around the world, will spend the next nine months or so imparting their wisdom from secret sources on every little bit of baby news.

Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story, eh?

I don’t think I’d enjoy being the target of such a spotlight, which probably explains why I’m neither a Prince nor a Princess.

After all, I like being able to pick my nose at traffi c lights without it ending up on the front page of a magazine.

Make the most of every second of your spare time, I say.

Too often our spotlight is indeed focused on the world of celebrity and I can almost guarantee that Princess Kate’s baby news would have outranked every other story on the major news websites on Tuesday.

A poor young 17-year-old kid died while on schoolies in Fiji and the Craig Th omson aff air took another twist, but forget that, a member of the Royal Family is having a kid!

Congratulations to the thousands of other women around the world who told their family the exact same piece of news on Tuesday: they’re pregnant.

Most will not be born into such luxury and glamour, and in truth many will become far more interesting people, but eh, she’s a Princess. A Princess!

We’re a little over three weeks away from Christmas and for many families, whom at best have the spotlight shone on them for one day in their lives, it will be a time of much sadness.

Many will be spending their fi rst Christmas without a loved one, many because of tragic circumstances.

Th ink about the family of Nicole Fitzsimons.

Just a few weeks ago, Nicole and herpartner Jamie were holidaying in Th ailand.

In a split second, a fun time turned to

of a young Australian in horrifi c circumstances received barely a ripple of coverage compared to that of a Princess who lives half a world away being pregnant.

Th ere are many, many other examples like that one.

In the Penrith LGA this year, there have been a number of tragic, fatal accidents – the most recent out at Orchard Hills just a few weeks ago.

A life taken, the world changed, and yet nobody noticed.

I’m not sitting here with a waving fi nger at the media, after all, they report what they believe will attract the most viewers.

Th at’s a commercial reality. But as we head into a summer that will

undoubtedly claim more young lives, many of them on our roads, you have to wonder how we get the message to sink in if we care more about Lindsay Lohan getting arrested than we do about a family losing a mother, a brother, a sister, or a child.

Th e Nicole Fitzsimons story I mentioned above has some rather nasty twists that should have taken this country’s attention.

It didn’t, but then again, Kate Middleton had a new hairstyle around that time. Priorities.

On Tuesday night, I was driving from Mulgoa back into Penrith.

I was doing the speed limit, and unfortunately I was forcing the young female P-Plater in the green car behind me to do it, too.

Unhappy, she overtook me on a bend, and sped off into the distance.

Presumably, this girl has all but a few years of driving experience, if that.

Th ere was every chance she could have been killed in that instant because if I couldn’t see what was around that bend, neither could she.

If you think it might have been your daughter, give me a call, I’ve got the number plate.

If that girl keeps driving like that, she will die before the most signifi cant parts of her life unfold.

But when she does, none of us will really care.

We’ll be too busy guessing Royal baby names to even notice.

unthinkable tragedy.24-year-old Nicole, a passionate sports

journalist, was killed when the scooter that she and Jamie were riding was hit from behind by a maniac driver.

Th ere is much more to the story of Nicole Fitzsimons, but that’s not the point of this column. However, if you’re interested, visit www.nicolefi tzsimons.com, it’s well worth a browse.

My point here is that the death

Marrickville music maestro Martin Smith has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his work with

the Nova Youth Orchestra on Sydney’s north shore.

Mr Smith, who is the youth orchestra’s co-founder and musical director, received the honorary appointment and award within the general division of the Order of Australia.

“I was absolutely stunned when I opened the letter, it was a really humbling experience,” Mr Smith said.

“I’m the third generation in music in my family, so to have the award for it as well, I really did, I found it absolutely amazing.”

Each week, Mr Smith works with the Nova Youth Orchestra to provide classical music education to school-aged children from across the state.

Since he co-founded the non-profi t project in 1990, Mr Smith has acted as the orchestra’s musical director and watched it expand from about eight children to about 20 current active members, plus the many hundreds more along the way who’ve been part of the project and are

now adults.“It’s a community orchestra that’s

open to anybody, it’s an orchestra that has absolutely no audition process for the kids to come in, we take anybody,” said Mr Smith, who also works as the music master at Sydney Grammar School St Ives Preparatory.

“We’ve had kids from as far as Kirrawee and Newcastle come to rehearsals. We’ve had kids from Bankstown, one boy was from Marrickville – we’ve had people from all over.”

Th e expert in string music has worked tirelessly to take the orchestra on international tours, as well as to the Australian Outback, to share its sound as

well as widen the experiences of the its young members.

“We went to central Australia, just set up in the middle of nowhere in the dirt to do a concert, because it’s a community-based orchestra to go out into the community. Th e charter of the group is to go out and perform,” he said.

“Our criteria is it’s supposed to be fun. We try to go out of our way to get really good musicians who love working with kids to come and work with them, so they can see the expertise at the other end of what they’re currently rehearsing.”

Asked what he loved most about music, Mr Smith said it brings joy to the heart and inspires people in their lives.

Suitable from 3 months of age.

Your Baby Can Read. He loves it….it really teaches them. He has such a wide vocabulary and I really

believe it’s because of this little programme

Miranda Kerr talking about her son Flynn using Your Baby Can Read.

The Your Baby Can Read! programme is a fun, multisensory approach to teaching language. The programme works so well because it is easy for a child to connect the written word to the word sound, and the meaning of the word. By utilizing this approach to teaching, children have a greater chance at reading success!

Your baby will see the words, hear the words, say the words, see images and videos related to the words, the words are always used in context and your child is encouraged to do an action related to the words. Your child will SEE, HEAR, SAY and DO!

Your child can learn to read as easily and naturally as he or she learns to talk.

Marrickville Greens have claimed developers could ‘whack on an extra fl oor’ onto new buildings after height

controls were addressed at a Marrickville Council meeting recently.

Greens Cr David Leary said changes to the Marrickville LEP at the November 20 council meeting could lead to taller buildings in residential areas.

“At last week’s council meeting, Liberal councillor Rosana Tyler and the Labor Party combined to vote to increase height restrictions on buildings across the entire Marrickville local government area,” Cr Leary said.

“Th is change now means developers can whack on an extra fl oor on every development across our community.

“I am especially concerned to see that high rise apartment buildings may now be possible on the Princes Highway at St Peters.”

But Labor councillor Chris Wood said Cr Learys’ comments were misleading and designed to “worry people into thinking there were no height controls in their neighbourhoods”.

“Th e motion before council last Tuesday actually proposed to reduce maximum heights in the Marrickville LEP by 2.5 metres because of a loop hole in the three-metre allowance for roof space,” Cr Wood said.

“Residents were applying to use this space as living space. What council did was to reject the reduction in height for buildings, to maintain consistency

with the height established in the LEP in 2011 after a considerable process of consultation. Instead, council will assess each application to use this space, on a case by case basis.”

Recent development applications to Marrickville Council have challenged LEP height controls, which allow additional height for ‘roof top structures’ only, like parapets and balustrades, and are instead proposing an additional storey for the roof top space.

A recent Land and Environment Court judgment showed the court placed little weight on the Marrickville’s Development Control Plan’s qualifi cations to the height controls in the LEP. As a result, council staff recommended councillors reduce the height of buildings allowable under the LEP to ensure the intended number of storeys was properly controlled.

“Instead of supporting the advice from staff to maintain the status quo and restrict building heights to current levels, the Liberals and Labor supported amendments that will allow an extra storey on every building,” Cr Leary said.

Liberal councillor Rosana Tyler denied any alliance with Labor and said Cr Morris Hanna, an independent for South Ward, fi rst raised the motion, and said her decision was based on common sense.

“Th e matter was not raised with me by the Labor Party either before or after the meeting,” Cr Tyler said.

“My concern is that one amendment here will lead to another amendment there, and so on. I would like to see an amendment that solves the issue.”

Soaring to new heights: Can developers add extra levels?

Members of the Marrickville unit of the State Emergency Service stood side by side in uniform en masse at the Marrickville Council meeting on Tuesday

night to protest a Greens challenge to the allocation of an extra $900,000 towards a new SES headquarters at Sydenham Green.

Th e SES appearance followed the November 20 council meeting, at which Greens councillors opposed a quarterly budget review statement for the period ended September 30, 2012, which sought a budget adjustment to increase funding for the SES

building by $900,000.Th e Greens had lodged a rescission motion to

prevent the budget adjustment but withdrew the motion to applause from the SES on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, Marrickville SES unit controller and local resident Michael Carney addressed councillors on the need for a new SES facility.

“Th is issue has to be resolved and a new facility commenced without further delay,” Mr Carney said.

Mr Carney said recent unstable weather events including fl ooding in the Marrickville local government area have only increased the need for a new SES headquarters, allow for more accurate decision making, improve incident response times in the area and therefore increase the overall safety.

Mortgage holders in Marrickville have been given an early Christmas present by the Reserve Bank, with a 0.25

per cent rate cut announced on Tuesday.Th e offi cial cash rate is now 3.0 per

cent, but the focus for the latter part of the week has been on the banks, and if they would turn into the Christmas Grinch and refuse to pass on the full cut.

So far, none of the big four have passed on the full rate cut, with both the

National Australia Bank and Westpac passing only a portion of the 0.25 per cent cut on to customers.

Leanne Pilkington, General Manager of Laing+Simmons, said banks not passing on the full rate cuts are hurting housing market activity.

“Th e net result is that interest rate cuts at the Reserve Bank level are not having an impact,” she said.

“Th e subdued levels of transactional activity, despite the offi cial cash rate being at historical lows, not only emphasises the caution among buyers but also the lack of stock on the market.”

Ferncourt Public School student Lily Rodgers won the state-wide Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition on November 21 with a speech on what it means

to be Australian.Th e Year 6 student gave one prepared and one

impromptu speech at Ultimo’s ABC Centre on the day, with fi ve minutes to prepare the impromptu. Th ere were 2,132 students in the competition.

“I was shocked, I didn’t really think I had a chance at winning... Th e topic that I had for my prepared speech was ‘un-Australian’,” Miss Rodgers said.

“I did a bit of research into the citizenship test for people who want to be naturalised here. I kind of think it’s silly that we determine whether people are Australian or not on a test.”

She described the moment her name was called as the winner as “like a movie”, when a contingent of her close friends and classmates jumped on stage and lifted her up to celebrate.

Lily’s father Steve described his daughter’s success as well deserved.

“We were really over the moon, she worked so hard at it. I’ve always encouraged her to kind of be an advocate for people who don’t have the ability to speak up for themselves, to be an advocate for the voiceless.,” Mr Rodgers said.

To celebrate Newtown’s sesquicentenary, Marrickville Council is holding free screenings of the documentary ‘I Have a Dream: Th e Making of a Mural’. Th e screenings will be held at 10am and 2pm on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December at the Dendy Cinemas Newtown. A loop of archival images will also be on display between the screenings. For more information on the Newtown Sesquicentenary visit www.newtownprecinct.com.au.

DIY workshops at Green Living CentreResidents can participate in a series of DIY workshops at Newtown’s Green Living Centre this month. On December 15 from 10am at Brown Street Community Hall, a worm farming workshop will teach you how to start and maintain your own worm farm to turn kitchen scraps to garden gold. “During the holiday season, we tend to buy more than any other time of the year, which can have a big impact on the environment,” Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said. “Spread the Christmas cheer and share your new skills and techniques with family and friends,” Cr Macri said. Bookings are essential on 9519 6366 or through www.greenlivingcentre.eventbrite.com.au.

Wilkins Public School in Marrickville will receive of $30,000 in funding from NAB Schools First for its

partnership with Petersham TAFE.Th e partnership involves the

development of an environmental education resource known as ‘Wilkins Green’, a large school community garden, which is a seven-year collaboration between Wilkins Public School and Petersham TAFE Outreach.

Wilkins Green incorporates a produce garden, chicken run and Aboriginal trail developed by teachers and students,

from preschool to Year 6.Head of NAB Schools First, Rebecca

Sherwill, said the quality of this year’s applicants was very strong.

“It was extremely diffi cult for our judges to select this year’s winners, and that is what makes the award win by Wilkins Public School such a great achievement,” said Ms Sherwill.

NAB Schools First is a national awards program that has been recognising and rewarding outstanding school and community partnerships since 2009 and will have awarded over $18 million in funding to 440 schools across Australia.

Win for Wilkins Public: NAB donates $30,000 for garden

The cheque for $30,000 in funding from NAB bank was presented to the school recently.Loca

EGNT he Adelaide

Hills’ Wicks Estate has released a

couple of great drops in time for Christmas – a 2010 Sparkling

Chardonnay Pinot Noir that’ll be ideal with canapés as guests arrive for Christmas day lunch or dinner, and a delightful 2012 Sauvignon Blanc for those opting this year for a cold seafood spread at the Festive table.

Winemakers Tim Knappstein and Leigh Ratzmer fermented the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir separately for their bubbly, and then blended them to get exactly the combination of fl avours they were looking for – a sparkling drop with a wonderful zesty freshness to get the party going, and a palate to go perfectly with a range of canapés or simply on its own in the lead-up to lunch or dinner.

Their 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is one of those easy-drinking wines that goes ideally with lighter meals, in particular seafoods, with typical tropical fruit and passionfruit to the fore and hints of lime.

The 2010 Sparkling is $25 and the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc $18.

One for lunch: Julie Barry never ceases to amuse us with the diversity of whimsical, often irreverent remarks she comes up with about the exceptional wines she makes under her equally whimsical (and exceptional) Good Catholic

Girl label. In one such comment, she said her

James Brazill 2009 Clare Shiraz “makes it almost sinfully easy to drink”. This is a somewhat full-bodied drop with wonderful aromas that jump from the glass: dark plums, chocolate and warming spices.

Certainly one of her best ever, she attributes its success to the fruit from her Limerick vineyard at Armagh which she regards as being the fi nest to date, and fortuitously picked on March 7th which, according to Julie, happened to be “the feast day of St Celcius of Armagh…”

We’ll take her Good Catholic Girl word for it, and while she suggests it goes particularly well with Irish Stew, we’d rather share it with turkey on Christmas Day. Price: $30.

Star Satellite Connect with the rest of the world!

419 New Canterbury Road Dulwich Hill

Phone: 9564 0962 www.starsatellite.com.au.

At 16, Andrew Ahumada started playing with satellite dishes and spectrum analysers in his backyard to see what was in the sky. Fast

forward to 2012 and the founder and owner of Star Satellite Pty Ltd at Dulwich Hill has made the cutting-edge technology his life’s work.

Together with his dad, Mr Ahumada installs satellite dishes at Sydney homes to allow ethnic communities from around the world to connect with their heritage and keep up with what’s going on at other ends of the world.

Whether you’re Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Arabic, Greek or otherwise, Star Satellite can tailor your television to suit your needs, so that the channels you want from around the world stream direct to your living room.

“We connect people back to their homelands,” Mr Ahumadasaid. “We can get channels from all diff erent parts of the world. We do pay TV like ‘MySat’ for Arabic, Greek and Italian families and KONNECTV’ for Indian families.”

Mr Ahumada, of Portuguese and Chilean heritage himself, said picking up television channels from diff erent regions requires diff erent satellites. For example, Portuguese stations usually require a 2.3 metre dish, whereas to receive Chilean TV, you often need a smaller dish.

As well as installing satellite dishes, Star Satellite conducts satellite receivers repairs.

And it doesn’t stop at TV. Mr Ahumada’s team can fi x mobile phones and electronics like game consoles and DVD players and computers, making the company a one-stop-shop for your home entertainment and connectivity needs.

Th e company started in 2004, off ering Portuguese channels to the Portuguese community. From there, the company grew to off er an ever increasing variety of content for multi-ethnic communities across the country.

It is the ideal time to lay plans to ensure maximum fi nancial

security for the future. Don’t expect any swift returns from a new strategy, but sensible monetary decisions made now will pay off in a big way later on. With Mars in your fourth house you need to be prepared for unexpected guests so stock up your fridge. However, be careful of over indulging as your body will be super sensitive to wines and rich food.

By turning your heightened perceptions to your love

life, business partnerships, taxation issues or shared resources you will save yourself a lot of trouble later. Mars is stirring up your ambitions and a new boss, colleague or client will feel like a breath of fresh air. Th e New Moon on the 13th will bring fun into your life. Th e Full Moon on the 28th creates domestic tension and family arguments, but you are likely to play the peacemaker.

Mars in your own sign is bringing a lifting of your

spirits and a renewed confi dence and assertiveness all around. On the professional front your friends and colleagues are pointing you towards exciting, new opportunities. On the social level many close friends are likely to turn to you for words of wisdom. Th e Full Moon on the 28th warns you to guard against being manipulated and to avoid taking responsibility for others.

You are going to be in a slightly frivolous frame of

mind and this is the ideal time to get involved in something creative or to enjoy the company of children and younger people. Mars energises your partnership zone making you feel rather romantic and your other half will not be complaining about all the extra attention you will showing him or her. Th e New Moon on the 13th sees you in a highly productive mood.

Th is is the ideal time to invest in property or a new business

venture. With Venus in your sign your partner and associates are completely in tune with your needs. Mars is in your third house making you charming and seductive. Aff ection, fondness and respect from others will be forthcoming. Th e New Moon on the 13th indicates an unexpected gift or stroke of good luck coming your way. Th e Full Moon warns you to rein in your impulsive streak.

Th e conjunction of Venus and Saturn marks a new and

responsible attitude to relationships on your part. Th is is the ideal time to organise a wedding or to plan for the future as you and your partner will be very much in tune. With Mars in your ninth house this is an ideal time to travel overseas or to explore new neighbourhoods. It is also a good time to deepen your interests in spiritual matters.

Venus is in your 10th house and whether it’s a power play

at work or a personal feud, fl attery will get you everywhere. Mars in Capricorn is sending you on an inner journey and therefore you need to work out what your true values are. Also remember to allow plenty of time in your hectic schedule for rest. Th e Full Moon on the 28th indicates you will fi nd it hard to go along with the beliefs and actions of others, so do what you know to be right.

Relatives are likely to drop in with off ers of help and useful

gifts. Any family get-togethers will be highly successful, this is also the ideal time to buy something beautiful and valuable for your home. Mars is in your sixth house and it’s the ideal time to focus on getting healthy and to burn off excess energy by enjoying outdoor activities. Th e New Moon on the 13th indicates that you are feeling highly inspired to enjoy the festive season.

Jupiter is in Gemini so the fate of your relationships is in your

own hands. If business is your main focus it’s the ideal time to start a joint venture. Couples should make time for romance. Mars energises your cash zone increasing your earnings, however be certain to take the practicalities into account before you ravage your bank account. Th e New Moon on the 13th is the time to sparkle as your social calendar fi lls up.

You will be feeling and looking good. Working

aff airs benefi t from the positive aspects of Venus and Mercury bringing opportunities for advancement, especially if you’re prepared to broaden your horizons. Th is is the ideal time to put your fi nances into order, just be certain to approach contracts and agreements with caution. Th e New Moon on the 13th brings your partying fun side to the surface.

You’re in a confi dent mood, and able to tackle anything

the world throws at you. Th ere’s a lure of the exotic, as far off places exert a powerful attraction. Th is is the ideal time to take a long trip or to register for an educational course. Mars in your 11th house indicates that your ability to understand others will be impressive, so put those listening skills to good work. Th e New Moon on the 13th provides a positive turning point for your career.

Your mind is going at full speed and you’re likely to

come up with some great new ideas. Th is is going to be a rather hectic month for you as your phone rings off the hook and your inbox will be inundated with emails. Th e New Moon on the 13th is the ideal time to reconnect with some old friends or revisit a place you once loved. With Mars in your 5th house children and younger people will be keeping you inspired and on your toes.

The thought of any type of injury or pain to your own child is unbearable to a parent, so knowing what to do to help your

precious ones should be top priority! Burn injuries, especially scalding from hot liquid, are most common during childhood. An accidental bump of your tea cup or spilling a saucepan of boiling water and peas as you try to prepare dinner with babies and children crying at your feet will end badly.

In treating burns, the immediate thing to do is remove the source of heat whether it be water, steam, fl ame, bbq hot plate or a hair straightener. Th is includes carefully removing your child’s hot, wet clothing unless areas are stuck to the skin in which case leave it on, because removing it could cause skin to tear and further damage to occur.

You need to quickly determine how severe the burn is and call for emergency help immediately if your child is unconscious, not breathing properly or in severe pain that you cannot easily control. All parents should know how to perform CPR for any case like this, so if you don’t, enrol in a fi rst aid course for the life of your child.

Th e burned area needs to be cooled by gentle, running, cool water for approximately 20 minutes. Burns have stored heat and if not quickly cooled down can cause deeper damage. As diffi cult as

it is, keep calm, your little one needs your reassurance and calmness.

If you notice blisters arising don’t pop them because it will introduce infection and blisters help those areas to heal. If the burn is larger than a 50 cent coin, see your GP or go to the emergency department for assessment and treatment. All burns are painful so keep your child comfortable with cool compresses and paracetamol if needed.

In the case of your child biting on an electrical cord or poking toys through the powerpoint, fi rst look, don’t touch, and if possible turn off the source of electricity or even pull or knock your child away with a wooden spoon or a non conducting tool. Electrical burns can cause cardiac problems and internal burns that you cannot see, so dial 000 for help.

What if your child swallows draino or something strongly acidic? Th ese can cause serious chemical burns, and require diff erent treatments, so immediately phone the Poisons Hotline on 131 126 and get emergency advice.

Y ou’re setting a new personal best time for the bridge to bridge walk when you stumble on a rock and go

down on a quickly swelling, sore ankle! Everyone knows you need to apply

ice straight away. But is that really the best treatment? Maybe just getting ice on an injury isn’t the best thing to do.

From Mark Sisson’s website I found some evidence that suggests that compression is key.

I was unable to fi nd many studies that compared compression alone, icing alone, and doing nothing, but there are several studies showing major benefi ts for compression and icing over icing alone. Most recently, subjects recovering from recent knee surgery received either icing alone or compression and icing. Th e compression and icing group had better pain relief and a marked reduction in pain medication usage when compared to the icing group.

Also, an earlier analysis found that while applying ice after knee surgery seemed to help with pain, it did not improve range of motion or drainage. In other words, it was good for pain but did nothing to actually speed the healing process or get patients back to action.

And in the one study I did fi nd that isolated compression and icing,

compression bested both types of icing, continuous and intermittent ice pack application, in the reduction of post foot or ankle injury swelling.

Th e problem with RICE injury treatment, (Rest Ice Compression Elevation) is that people focus way too much on the icing and do it to the exclusion of compression, while totally misinterpreting the rest and elevation recommendations.

You’re not supposed to stay completely immobile and sedentary with your iced leg up on the couch for weeks while watching bad TV.

After the initial downtime, you need to move! As soon as you’re able to move without pain, you should be mobilising the aff ected tissue. Don’t go hiking on a broken leg or swollen ankle or anything like that, but don’t assume inactivity is best.

Keep your movements pain free and unloaded to begin with. Rotate that sprained ankle. Flex and extend that hurt elbow. And so on. If you’re going to ice, keep it short and sweet and immediately after the initial injury. Err on the side of moderation.

Most studies indicate that the coldest temperatures are less eff ective at reducing swelling and may even increase it, while the “cooler” temperatures were better at reducing swelling.

inside a corner store dating to 1893.Today, it’s one of the inner west’s

best kept culinary secret, with its luscious home-made cakes and slices made on-site daily by the talented Revolver chef, Helen, with the help of her three dedicated kitchen staff.

Its coffee blend, Morgan’s, is carefully hand-crafted and roasted at Emu Plains, at the base of the Blue Mountains.

With its equal focus on food and

Owner Marc Olding said the specials board is updated daily to keep things fun for Revolver regulars.

“One of our most popular breakfast items is the ricotta hot cakes, which come with optional maple syrup.”

Some of the other popular menu items include the Revover big breakfast, the “old school thickshake”, even the cafe’s humble cheeseburger goes above and beyond the basics to create a mouth-watering, gourmet dish.

I conic Bee Gees member Barry Gibb is returning to Sydney for a series of shows during his 2013 Mythology Tour.

His fi rst Sydney Entertainment Centre show on February 8 has already sold out but fortunately for die-hard fans Gibb has announced a second show to take place on Wednesday, February 27.

Gibb has designed the Mythology Tour as a tribute to his late brothers, Maurice and Robin, creating what is sure to be an emotional concert experience.

The Australian tour will be the fi rst of its kind around the world and will feature Barry Gibb with his incredible band that includes his son, guitarist/vocalist, Stephen, Maurice’s daughter, Samantha, and Beth Cohen.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Australian music lovers have embraced the Mythology Tour so whole-heartedly, given that it’s the country where it all began,” Gibb said.

“I am truly humbled by this response and can’t wait to perform these songs again on home soil.”

With a career that has spanned more than fi ve decades, Gibb stands as one of the most prolifi c singer/songwriter/producers of the modern era.

As the eldest brother and creative leader of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb, along with his brothers Maurice and Robin, represent one of the most successful vocal groups in rock and roll history.

With their signature vocal style and blending of musical infl uences, the music of the Bee Gees has crossed all musical genres from pop and R&B to country and rock.

As a songwriter, Gibb is hailed with contemporaries such as Lennon and

McCartney, enjoying the most consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number ones of any songwriter.

With the fi rst show already sold out,

there’s no doubt that tickets for the February 27 show will be amongst the hottest in town early in the new year.

Catch Barry Gibb live at the Sydney

Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, February 27 at 8pm. Tickets start at $99.90. To book call 136 100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

EC lint Eastwood

makes his fi rst appearance

in a fi lm not directed by himself in 19 years in ‘Trouble with the Curve’, also starring Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake.

Gus Lobel (Eastwood) has been one of the best scouts in baseball for decades, but, despite his efforts to hide it, age is starting to catch up with him. Nevertheless, Gus refuses to be benched for what may be the

fi nal innings of his career.

The front offi ce of the Atlanta Braves is starting to question his judgement, especially with the country’s hottest batting phenomenon on deck for the draft. The one person who might be able to help is also the one person Gus would never ask: his daughter, Mickey (Adams), a driven and ambitious associate at a high-powered Atlanta law fi rm. Against her better judgement,

Mickey joins him on his latest scouting trip to North Carolina.

‘Trouble with the Curve’ is in cinemas now and is rated M.

T he LEGO video game franchise has been very

successful for titles like ‘Batman’ and ‘Indiana Jones’, so it’s only fi tting that ‘The Lord of the Rings’, one of the most successful movie franchises in history, has its turn.

‘LEGO: The Lord of the Rings’ is based on the motion picture trilogy and follows the original storylines of Tolkien’s novel. The entire family can team up in pairs as adorable LEGO mini-fi gures to

experience countless dangers, solve riddles and battle formidable foes on their journey to Mount Doom.

The game takes players along on the adventures of Frodo Baggins and his unlikely fellowship as they set out on a perilous journey to destroy the One Ring and save Middle-earth.

Kids, tweens, teens and parents can traverse the Misty Mountains, explore the Mines of Moria, knock on the Black Gate of

Mordor, and partake in epic battles with Orcs, Uruk-hai, the Balrog and other fearsome foes while harnessing the humour and imagination of LEGO.

A great family game for the holidays.

T he little Aussie movie that took the Cannes

Film Festival by storm, ‘The Sapphires’, is out this week on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Inspired by a true story, ‘The Sapphires’ follows four vivacious, young and talented Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all-girlgroup, The Sapphires, entertains American troops in Vietnam in 1968.

Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Kay (Shari Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (Chris O’Dowd of ‘Bridesmaids’), a good-humoured talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm and a great knowledge of soul music.

A genuinely feel-good movie, ‘The Sapphires’ is a fun musical comedy that showcases the amazing voice of Jessica Mauboy.

Following in the footsteps of ‘Red Dog’, this is an Australian movie that has the quality to compete with American fi lms.

G rammy-award winning singer Bruno

Mars has returned to the music scene with a bang with his second studio album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’. The album has already generated hype, with many critics applauding the singer’s unique style and his ability to seamlessly fuse pop, rock, reggae and hip hop.

Mars collaborated with renowned song writers such as Jeff Bhasker and Mark

Ronson, who have worked with Kayne West and Beyoncé, for this 10-track album. The singer himself has stated that this album will be more musically varied than his award-winning fi rst album ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’, which sold over six million copies worldwide.

The lead single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ has already been called one of the best songs of the year by some critics. The song has already

passed one million digital sales and has received positive reviews and excellent praise.

However not all of the songs are as fun and quirky as the lead single, refl ecting Mars’ diverse style.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Celebrate

Come and celebrate NYE on the terrace and watch the city fi reworksEnjoy a great meal at Regattas Cafe, terrace reservations are essential*From 8.30-12.30am(no cover charge)*refundable booking fee applicable

So, it’s fi nally summer and are you like me with nothing at all to watch?

‘Summer Heights High’ and ‘Angry Boys’ creator/actor, Chris Lilley, dropped some awesome news last week that he is working on a brand new show for the ABC to launch in 2013. He’s not giving away any details as to what it’s about or if any of his previous characters will star but one thing’s for sure it will be regarded as one of the most highly anticipated shows of the New Year. As a fan I really hope Tongan bad boy and “Dicktation” graffi ti artist Jonah Takaluareturns gets a run. He is without a doubt Lilley’s most popular character to date.

Channel Seven favourite Matt White has quit trashy current affairs show ‘Today Tonight’ amid speculation the show itself

could also be on the way out. Industry chatter has speculated that Seven may replace the program in 2013, recently advertising for reporters, producers and researchers around the country. Watch this space.

Speaking of Matt White, he’ll join ‘Sunrise’ newsreader Natalie Barr as host of the 2013 ‘Carols in the Domain’. The much-loved Christmas event will star this year’s ‘X Factor’ winner Samantha Jade and fi nalists, The Collective. Also taking to the stage will be ‘Carols’ favourite Mark Vincent, Jay Laga’aia and Georgie Parker. It airs on Seven live on Saturday, December 22 at 8.30pm.

Last week Channel Nine announced ‘She Bangs’ singer Ricky Martin will do the honours and replace Keith Urban on ‘The Voice’ next year. Many fans of the show have panned the move but I for one think it’s a good one. It doesn’t matter if Ricky hasn’t topped the charts in years, he still comes with plenty of cred and I guarantee you people will fall in love with the Latino singer all over again as if it was 1999.

‘Footy Show’ fans will get an earlier dose of the program next year with the “Fatty” Vautin hosted program switching from its traditional 9.30pm slot to prime-time at 8.30pm. The move comes after improved ratings in 2012 plus to combat Channel Ten’s growing ‘The Game Plan’ show, which also airs at the same time. It’s sure set to be a bumper year ahead for footy lovers!

Foxtel has added eight new channels to its popular ‘Foxtel Go’ app. Viewers can now watch FOX8, SoHo, Lifestyle You, Lifestyle Food, Lifestyle Home, FUEL TV, SPEED and Discovery Turbo MAX.

This now brings the total number of live channels to 30. All I want now is Sport!

The Weather Channel will be no more come 2013, instead it will be known as Sky News Weather after the media network took over the management and operational responsibility of the channel.

Missing ‘Home and Away’ and struggling to fi nd something to watch over summer? Then give one of my all-time favourite shows, ‘Cops’, a go – 7pm weeknights on ONE HD. Beginning way back in 1989, this show is regarded as one of the fi rst ever reality shows and after

23 years has only gotten better with age. Don’t be a ‘Bad Boy’ and miss it!

It’s been around for almost forever but fans of ‘At The Movies’ will now have a new night and new time to watch. From next year the ABC1 review show will screen in its new timeslot of 9.30pm Tuesday, February 19.

It’s one of the best reality shows of the last 10 years, so it’s a real shame Channel Seven dump it to such a late timeslot week in, week out. Thankfully, from this Monday, ‘The Amazing Race’ will air at 9.30pm, and with double episodes.

Just when fans thought Sydney FC may have turned their season around with new coach Frank Farina coming on board last week, they’ve been dealt

another blow with star import Alessandro Del Piero ruled out of this Sunday’s clash through injury.

Del Piero won’t make the fl ight to Wellington to take on the Phoenix after he suff ered a low grade strain to his hamstring during last Sunday’s 0–0 draw against the Melbourne Heart.

Fortunately for fans of the Sky Blues, scans have cleared the Italian of any tear in the hamstring.

“It’s a long fl ight and with time diff erences it’s not an option for him to play,” Farina said.

“Th e positive news is that there is no tear but we will re-evaluate how the injury has progressed and what we do going forward next week when we get back in to training.”

Sydney FC will have their fi nal training session today before fl ying out to Wellington on Saturday morning.

Th is Sunday afternoon’s matchup against the Phoenix is shaping up to be a vital one for the Sky Blues who haven’t won a game since October 28.
