Exercise 1: Dublin Core

February 16, 2016

Create Dublin Code records 5 items that are close at hand and convenient, e.g., books, DVDs, etc.—using

the Dublin Core Generator http://www.dublincoregenerator.com/generator_nq.html. Before you begin the

exercise, think about a project that might use the metadata you are creating and what user model you

would construct for that project. This will help you make decisions about how to create the Dublin Core

elements. Write one paragraph or so with any observations on your results, including the user model that

you imagined.

Personal observations

I envisioned these items to become part of a larger public library collection with emphasis on

hobbies and recreation, e.g. arts, music, and crafts. As the metadata was intended to be relevant to public

library patrons, I believed that the titles and the subjects would be most important part of metadata,

because they describe the aboutness of the work as it relates to the subject of leisure.

The difficulty of generating the metadata was mostly related in my instance to deciding on the

values to input in the Contributor, Format, Source, Relation, and Coverage fields. I found the definitions

of these fields in the Dublin Core generator a bit confusing.

Finally, I had a hard time with the item #5 on my list, the CD of symphonies and concertos – in

particular, deciding how to treat the music composers vs. music performers. I eventually decided to

include all the composers in the Contributors field, and leave out the performers.

Exercise 2: RDF/XML

February 21, 2016

This exercise will give you practice generating metadata using an XML schema.

1. Go to the Dublin Core Generator at: http://www.dublincoregenerator.com/generator_nq.html (Links to

an external site.)

2. Look at the 5 records you created for Exercise 1.

3. Generate DC-XML for your 5 records. Display output as: XML. Check mark all these options:

Include standard XML version/encoding declaration.

Include root element and namespace.

Desired root element: metadata

Include namespace reference for standard Dublin Core (DC Elements).

Include namespace reference for qualified Dublin Core (DC Terms).

4. Write a paragraph with any observations about your results.

Personal Observations

In this assignment, I was unsure about the format of values in the Contributor field. Should the

field include only the name of the contributor, or should it include the contributor’s role as well―to

indicate the nature of their contribution? E.g.:

<dc:contributor>Cover photo by David Stoecklein.</dc:contributor>

or

<dc:contributor> Stoecklein, D.</dc:contributor>.

I checked the Dublin Core guidelines, at http://dublincore.org/documents/2012/06/14/dcmi-

terms/?v=elements#contributor, but they do not include guidelines on the format in which to input the

values in the field. Also, I was still undecided with the item #5 on my list, the CD of symphonies and

concertos – in particular, how to treat the music composers vs. music performers. As in the previous

assignment, I included all the composers in the Contributors field, and left out the performers.

Exercise 3: MODS

March 8, 2016

This exercise is designed to get some hands-on experience using MODS, and to contrast it with one of the

Dublin Core records that you created. There is a wonderful MODS workbook that was created at the

libraries of the University of Tennessee--Knoxville. It is found at:

http://dlc.lib.utk.edu/~cdeane/UTK_LIB_DLC/WB4/workbook.htm. The workbook allows you to create a

MODS record element by element, and then saves an XML file of your work. Choose one of the items

that you used in the Dublin Core exercise. You will make a MODS record for that item.

Exercise 4: TEI

March 12, 2016

For this assignment, I created a TEI records for Robert Burns’ poem A Red, Red Rose. I copied the text of

the poem from the Poetry Foundation website, http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/173068, into a

Word document, and then converted it into TEI format.

Exercise 5: Crosswalk

March 26, 2016

In the Getty Research Institute Metadata Crosswalk1, choose two of the metadata schemes.

Create a metadata record for your Assignment 1 paper using the first scheme that you chose.

Include elements for author, title, date, subject(s), extent (pages, file size, etc.), brief abstract,

language, and so on. Try to use as many elements as you can. After you have created your

record, crosswalk it to the second scheme and create a record using the equivalent elements.

Briefly discuss any crosswalking problems, including things like lack of granularity in one of the

schemes, etc.

Discussion: Crosswalk issues

The difficulty of generating the metadata crosswalks was mostly related to deciding on the type

of values to use in semantic mapping. In order to ensure semantic interoperability in the Subject fields, for

18

example, I used the Library of Congress Subject Headings, both in the Dublin Core and MARC 21

schema. In the Format field, I used the list of Internet Media Types controlled vocabulary

[http://www.iana.org/ assignments/media-types/] defining computer media formats, according to the

DCMI Guidelines3. “For electronic resources, it is recommended that a value of DC.Format be selected

from the list of Internet Media Types (MIME values) whenever possible. The reference list is maintained

at http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/media-types/media-types. Note that this list is a registry

and there is a well-defined procedure for adding new types if appropriate,” according to DCMI4. For the

Microsoft Word document, I used <dc:format> msword</dc:format> in Dublin Core record, which I had

selected from the MIME values at http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/application/msword.

The lack of granularity was most noticeable while mapping the DC Format field to the following

MARC fields: 336 Content Type, 337 Media Type, and 347 Digital File Characteristics.

Finally, I had difficulty in deciding how to catalog the genre of my research paper. I realized that

unlike MARC, the Dublin Core schema does not contain the field for genre of the work. Whereas MARC

schema does contain a genre field5 (655), I was unable to find the genre value for college research papers,

when looking it up, specifically, in the LCGFT General Terms6. Therefore, I did not include the 655

genre field in the MARC record for my research paper. For Dewey Decimal subject classification in

MARC record, I used the following classification scheme elements, in order to indicate the genre of my

research paper:

DDC Description

378 College and school magazines and papers

In summary, this exercise helped me realize that MARC schema provides for a greater level of

granularity than the Dublin Core metadata schema.
