Fallen for the Causeof Peace
Every day, in field operations around the world, men and women serve under the flag of theUnited Nations to build and maintain peace, torelieve human suffering, and to promote humanrights and sustainable development.
With integrity, commitment and courage theymeet humanity’s greatest challenges, over-coming any fears for their personal safety or se-curity. Tragically, in this noble endeavour, thereare those who make the ultimate sacrifice.
In honour of their memory, we dedicate ourselvesto continuing their mission, at Headquarters andin the field. We share the grief of their loved onesand pledge ourselves to ensuring that theirsacrifice in the service of the United Nations willnot have been in vain.

Prepared by the Peace and Security Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information in collaboration with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations --- May 2009
The Secretary-General’s Messagefor Memorial to Fallen
United Nations Peacekeepers29 May 2009
The United Nations was established in 1945 to “save succeedinggenerations from the scourge of war”. For more than 60 years, the men and women serving in UN peacekeeping have per-sonified this noble goal. In the face of enormous security chal-lenges and many other serious risks to their personal safety, theyhave shown outstanding dedication.
In 2008, 132 United Nations peacekeepers – military, police andcivilians – lost their lives while serving under the blue flag inhotspots around the world. That number marks a terrible mile-stone: the highest one-year total in the history of UN peace-keeping. Whether felled by acts of violence, disease oraccidents, these peacekeepers, including tenwomen, all left aninspiring legacy. Each also left behind families and friends griev-ing over their irreplaceable loved ones. It is with them that ourdeepest sympathies reside.
The UN peacekeeping family continues to grow, with more than113,000 personnel deployed, including more than 90,000 troopsand police contributed by 118 countries. Now more than ever,we must do our utmost to protect them.
Our fallen colleagues are especially cherished members of thisfamily. We should be proud of their achievements, and deter-mined to paymeaningful tribute to their sacrifice. They have notonly helped populations in dire need, they have also honouredtheir countries and the United Nations. Their service will remain asource of hope and inspiration to all of us who carry on their life-saving work for peace.
Ban Ki-moon
