I-3/I-4 Classic Aero Dual ConstellationClassic I-3 and I-4 networks, having identical infrastructure, can now be supported ‘as one’ bynetwork operations team
− In support of PBCS monitoring, Inmarsat can now utilise common analytic tools across I3 and I4networks
− Inmarsat can now administer satcom short codes in the same way across the I-3/I-4 GESs. Currentlyapproximately 180 codes defined – seeing increased interest from airlines (contact Andrew Ives orGary Colledge)
− Software tool in development to support management and distribution
Available for all aircraft with:
− Classic Aero-H+
− Classic Aero-H+ with SwiftBroadband
More aircraft activated for dual I-4 and I-3 operation (>50%) improved network resilience
Working with RC IMS(ARINC) and SITA to add I-4 to more aircraft ORT tables in acoordinated way
− Inmarsat is now supporting its partners to analyse the current satellite voice performance in theClassic Aero system [‘Satvoice Tiger Team’ within the FAA PARC]
Satvoice evaluation (FAA PARC)

• Alphasat, also known as Inmarsat-4A F4, waslaunched on the 25th July 2013, and it hadprovided Inmarsat services, other than aviationservices, since 19th Nov 2013.
Alphasat SatelliteBackground
• On the 24th March 2015 Inmarsat transitioned the EMEA (I4F2) Classic Aeroand SBB services to Alphasat. (Alphasat effectively replaced I4F2 at the sameorbital slot).
• The 4F2 satellite has remained co-located at 25°E since the transition ofservices to Alphasat to mitigate any transition issues.
• As announced in 2014, it is planned that the I4F2 will be moved to 63.9°E toform a new ocean region “MEAS” (Middle-East & Asia Satellite)
9 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015
Alphasat Satellite payload
Alphasat will provide improvements in power, capacityand available spectrum in the I4-EMEA region
The improvements include:
L-band aggregate EIRP (power): 60% increase
DSP resources (channels): 20% increase (plus improved efficiency)
L-band spectrum: 52% increase
C-band spectrum: 100% increase
These characteristics will lead to improved performance and capacity in thebusiest region, I4-EMEA

As of 30/07/15, two issues have been identified as contributing to the few longlatency messages and one topic (the on-aircraft handling of Media Advisories)that are being investigated;
a) positions where the aircraft is making transitions between satcom and VHF andvice-versa;
b) a few longer latency messages;
c) on-aircraft handing of Media Advisory
Message ‘outlier’ analysisSwiftBroadband subnetwork outlier latencies
28 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015
Since the first flights in June 2014 only one unplanned outage of the safetycomponents of the system has been noted:
˃ 6th/7th August, 4 hours
Analysis by SED, the AGGW supplier, has determined the causes. Short term mitigationmeasures put in place, and is now working on the necessary long-term mitigation.

Overview, benefits, architecture & timeline
Iris Precursor Programme
Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015
What is Iris?
A partnership between ESA and Inmarsat todevelop “Iris Precursor”, involving 16 companiesfrom 8 ESA member states
The service is being developed to satisfyperformance requirements set for VHF Datalinkand standardised for “initial 4D trajectorymanagement”
Integrated with the European Air TrafficManagement network
A new entity would be established as serviceprovider and undergo EASA certification
32 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015
Potential benefitsImproved availability and bandwidth over what is available thru VDL2 only
− Provides relief to VHF spectrum pressure
− Increased bandwidth available for AOC apps
− Increased service coverage
More efficient airspace operations leading to:
− Environmental benefits and fuel savings through user preferred routings including continuousclimb and descent profiles
− Improved traffic predictability (particularly at oceanic boundaries) leading to reducedcontroller workload and potentially lower ANS charges
Applicable to a range of aircraft types for FANS1/A & ATN operations:
− Short and Long Haul Commercial as well as Business jets
Global Datalink Convergence (ICAO and SESAR goal)
