A CONTINUOUS PROCESSClassification is a complete process which has been developed over many years of experience. Its rules embrace numerous parameters related to the strength and reliability of the hull structure such as materials (physical and chemical particulars), welding processes, welders’ qualifications, calculation of total and local stress, fatigue, bonding details, scantlings of hull components, corrosion margins, non-destructive testing, and mechanical tests. Each parameter, when not strictly controlled, may jeopardise the others. Following completion of the initial classification process, the certificate of classification is issued for five years. The certificate defines the framework of approval by means of precise notations describing the operational conditions of the vessel, notably type and service, maximum wave height, and draft. This may be complemented by additional notations such as conditions of loading/unloading, reinforcement for ice, equipment for containers, etc. Following the initial stage of construction, classification involves maintaining the validity of the certificate, thus ensuring continuity of safety and reliability levels. For that purpose, an intermediate survey, usually afloat, must be carried out at mid-term of the classification certificate. The rules and software are available on our website at www.veristar.com

ADDITIONAL SERVICES: - Condition Assessment Program (CAP): demonstrating seaworthiness. Bureau Veritas has developed a condition assessment program for inland navigation vessels (CAP Inland). This is a tailor–made tool for risk assessment, serving as a complementary supplement to class. CAP Inland provides a thorough assessment of vessel condition and a CAP rating by combining the results of expert examination of design data with an extensive vessel structural survey for hull and machinery. It is a consultancy service documenting the condition of a vessel at specific times in the vessel’s life.- Tanker Plus: A quality product aimed at comprehensive reporting of the actual condition of hull and machinery as well as the availability of documentation in respect of any classed tanker vessel. It follows the appraisal method of CAP Inland but with no additional means of inspection. - International Safety Management Code (ISM): Designed to protect safety management standards in terms of both ship operation and working environment. It embraces personnel ashore and on board vessels. Bureau Veritas proposes assessments and audits, on a voluntary basis, in connection with the issuance of certificate of compliance- International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS): Embraces risk assessment and security measures and is designed to respond to the vulnerability of vessels during operation, either when sailing or in port. Bureau Veritas proposes assessments and audits, on a voluntary basis, in connection with the issuance of certificates of compliance. - Tonnage measurement: Bureau Veritas offers a service whereby inland navigation vessels can achieve certification under the 1966 (Geneva) Convention on the Measurement of Inland Navigation Vessels. - Pleasure boats: Bureau Veritas is a notified body under European Directive 94/25/EC, which is applicable to all pleasure boats up to 24 m sold in Europe.

CLASSIFICATIONThe classification of inland navigation vessels is about much more than complying with regulations. It provides ship owners and charterers with the confidence that their assets are seaworthy, and that their cargo, equipment and crew will travel safely.Bureau Veritas is a leading classification society for inland navigation vessels, using its experience, know-how and advanced software for the benefit of the industry. Our rules have dedicated class notations covering all types of vessels, and we provide detailed requirements and guidance covering specific issues, including crew comfort, environmental protection, gas as fuel, ice class and lay-up. We are the undisputed world leader in the classification of dredging vessels, for example, and we have unique class notations, technical requirements and computerised programs.

New frontiers are opening up for inland navigation, with vessels operating in sheltered maritime areas and in more hostile environments. Demand is growing for larger and more versatile vessels that can offer economies of scale, lower emissions and improved fuel consumption.Bureau Veritas is at the forefront of these developments and therefore uniquely placed to help ship owners, shipyards and designers manage risk, ensure compliance and promote innovation. We respond quickly to industry demand for new rules to improve safety and performance and we invest heavily in research and development in order to develop fit-for-purpose class notations, rules, guidelines and design assessment tools.

We also provide statutory inspections on behalf of flag administrations charged with applying international and national regulations relating to safety and environmental protection.

Our significant investment in research and development, and our participation in developing national, regional and international regulations means we lead rather than respond to innovations in the industry. Our technical experts also play an active role in the development of regulations, ensuring we are bringing you the most up-to-date information.
