Raising lock stricken boats

Last year was one of the worst years for boatsleft hanging on the 'cills'. After the Canal &River Trust was criticised last year for the recovery of a boat in a lock in Bath, whichended up with a huge crane, contractors anddays of organising even though the boatended up completely submerged, the trust has agreed new procedures to speed up recovering boats stuck in this way.

Since then in a near identical stranding on theKennet & Avon Canal, a boat was raised withinhours by River Canal Rescue, 24 hours afterthe emergency assistance firm was called in tohelp.

On the day of its call-out to the stranding inLock 10 of the Kennet & Avon last November,RCR sent a team to assess the boat. They submitted documentation to the Canal & RiverTrust’s third-party works engineers to secureapproval for the recovery. Both partiesworked into the evening to ensure all health &safety issues were addressed and a refloatcould take place the next day. Despite earlier recommendations to use lifting

equipment or heavy plant solutions, RCR wasconfident the recovery could be made withmanpower, ropes and pumps.

As the vessel was caught on the cill and lyingat an angle, it was secured and stabilised priorto raising the lock’s water levels. The rescueteam entered the lock, sealed all water entrypoints and used tarpaulins to cover or ‘bag’the front of the boat. They also cleared the environmental spillage so the lock could beused as soon as they finished.

Having pumped out the water in the boat, thelock was re-filled under the watchful eye ofRCR’s Rescue Co-ordinator Trevor Forman andthe lock keeper, to ensure water was at thecorrect flow for a steady refloat. Once recovered, the boat was moored in the lock forchecking and any remaining water removed. It was then butted to another boat and takento a nearby base by its owners.


Trevor comments:

“We used ropes to restrict movement without any undue stress on bollards and the natural water movement in the lock to support the refloat. This was a ‘text book’ rescue – we were four hours on site with a

two-hour recovery – which proves with the right experience and expertise, refloats

can be achieved quickly and without too muchdisruption to the navigation system.”

Safely recovered!

“We can’t praise RCR enough – we were very impressed with their work and althoughwe hope not to have to use them again, we

At Castle Marinas our primary function is tooffer safe, secure and enjoyable boating to allour customers. In this respect we would like todraw your attention to the follow matters. Foryour own safety and comfort and that of othermarina users.

Health and SafetyThere are several potential hazards in a marineenvironment. Pontoons can be slippery whenits wet and icy. Please take care and wear suitable footwear. Please also take extra careat night and in strong winds. Cluttering pontoons and walkways can also behazardous.

Children must be supervised at all times andmust not ride in the trollies. Lifejackets are advisable.

We also welcome dogs but respect you to supervise and clean up after them.

In the event of an emergency contact the marina office immediately. You may want tomake a note of the out of hours contact number. Harbourmasters are on duty sevendays a week and contactable 24/7.Life rings and extinguishers are located aroundthe Marina. There is a first aid station in the marina office

Toilets, Showers and LaundryWe check the facilities every day and ourcleaners keep them spotless. Please leavethem as you find them and turn lights off asyou leave. Report any issues to the Marina Office.

Laundry tokens are available at the Marina Office/Shop at each site.

Pump Out, Diesel, Bottled Gas and FuelPlease check the marina layout plan for the location of these facilities. The Marina Officecan help re opening hours and the best positioning of your boat.We ask that all our customers are considerateto other marina users when taking on fuel.Smoking is strictly prohibited in these areas

Damage to the MarinaOur Staff are there to help you. If you doubtyour ability to manoeuvre your boat in the prevailing conditions do alert the Harbourmasters who will be happy to assist.Any damage to pontoons, facilities or boatsshould be reported to the Harbourmasters immediately.

Do not allow oil contaminated bilge effluent tobe discharged into the marina. Also be awarethat hot central heating or engine exhausts canscorch wooden pontoons.

Cars in the MarinaPlease observe the marina speed limits and beaware of pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife.We provide parking areas around out sites toallow easy access to boats. If you are away foran extended cruising period please park in themain car park.

Waste DisposalPlease help us to keep the marina clean andtidy by using the refuse disposal and recyclingfacilities correctly.
