Doc Severinsen and His Big Band: “Once More With Feeling!”

“Heeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the

landmark of late night TV for three decades. Trumpeter Doc Severinsen is perhaps the

most iconic band leader from the golden age of television as Johnny Carson’s leader of

the “Tonight Show Band.” Named after his best-selling recording, this concert features

Doc’s 17-piece band and the amazing vocalist, Vanessa Thomas performing “When You’re

Smiling” and “Singing in the Rain.” Doc still brings his trademark wit and has not lost

his flair for the outrageous fashion statement. The Lincoln Journal Star proclaimed,

“Amazingly, Severinsen proves that he still has the lip and the technique to play with

power, precision and stamina…[His] playing and bandleading certainly quashes

any doubts that at 84 he might have lost some of his famous panache.” n

Jim Witter’s “The Piano Men” featuring the music of Billy Joel and Elton John

A special UD 2013 Homecoming event! The Piano Men is a musical celebration of the

1970s – year by year, hit by hit – from the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. Dove Award

nominee and Canadian Juno Award nominee, recording artist Jim Witter and his band lead

an expertly crafted tour of an entire decade that begins with “Your Song” and winds us

along on a musical time machine, saluting two of the century’s most popular contemporary

songwriters. Utilizing projected vintage images, we return to the newspaper headlines, the

automobiles, the people, the events, the toys, and even the TV shows that shaped a decade.

Along the way, the sounds of “My Life,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Rocket Man,” “Just the

Way You Are,” and many more classic hits create an evening that’s just too much fun to

let it end. n www.thepianomen.net

Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” performed by Aquila Theatreof New York

One of the most revered novels of the 20th century, Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury’s riveting

tale of society where literature and knowledge are on the edge of extinction. The story has

been debated for decades – issues of censorship, the effects of technology on society and

literature, and the means by which knowledge is gained – continue to be very real concerns

today. The main character, Guy Montag, is a fireman with the frightful, but routine, job of

starting fires to destroy books and the houses that contain them. When his eccentric, young

neighbor, Clarisse, forces Guy to confront the emptiness of his life, he begins to question his

job and the oppressive society he lives in. Written in 1953, Fahrenheit 451 has achieved the

rare distinction of being both a literary classic and a perennial bestseller. It was adapted for

the stage in 1966 and later for the screen. With its skill at creating innovative productions of

great works of literature, the Aquila Theatre breathes new life into this visionary parable of

culture gone awry. The New Yorker describes Aquila’s productions as “classics made relevant

with superb acting and clever staging.” n www.aquilatheatre.com

San Jose Taiko, Japanese power drumming

San Jose Taiko (SJT) has been mesmerizing audiences with the powerful, spellbinding and

propulsive sounds of the taiko drums for 40 years. Inspired by traditional Japanese drumming,

SJT performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the voice of the

taiko as they strive to create new dimensions in Asian American movement and music.

San Jose Taiko has broadened and embellished the historical art form into a style that joins

the traditional rhythms of Japanese drumming with the beat of world rhythms including

African, Balinese, Brazilian, Latin and jazz percussion. Company members also study both

traditional and contemporary dance with leading choreographers, producing performances

that are fully choreographed, and theatrically lit extravaganzas of musical sound. Most

individual performers of SJT are third generation Japanese Americans and have also toured

with Kodo, Ondekoza, and the jazz/fusion group, Hiroshima. n www.taiko.org

E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web” performed by Theatreworks USA

Theatreworks’ production of Charlotte’s Web is based on E.B. White’s loving story of the

friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte. Wilbur

has a problem: how to avoid winding up as pork chops! Charlotte, a fine writer and true

friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman – she will create a “miracle.” Spinning

the words “Some Pig” in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur

a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever. This treasured tale, featuring

mad-cap and endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love, and the true

meaning of friendship. n www.theatreworksusa.org
