The Pen Green Teaching School is part of an integrated centre which is made up of a children’s centre, nursery school, early years provision and a research, development and training base. Our Nursery and Early Years provision have consistently judged to be Outstanding by Ofsted and in 2018 we were awarded 'Overall School of the Year' and 'Early Years Provision of the Year' by the Times Educational Supplement.

Our Teaching School vision is to inspire, challenge, and innovate, with Early Years Practitioners, Teachers and Early Educators to improve outcomes for our most vulnerable children and their families regionally, nationally and internationally. We believe that developing knowledge and understanding through practitioner reflection and action research is a central feature of successful service provision. We offer practitioners in the early years, health and social sectors, a comprehensive range of professional development opportunities including a full early years degree programme, teacher training, short courses, conferences, seminars and bespoke training.

The Research Base is an extension of our centre for children and families. Our daily practice is informed by our research and our research is generated from our work with children and families. Parents and practitioners collaborate as co-researchers and many have presented their work at national and international early years research conferences and symposia.

Our Initial Teacher Training course is accredited by the Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership which is the most established primary teacher training provider in Milton Keynes with 16 years’ experience in leading initial teacher training and has provided the region with hundreds of primary teachers. As part of the Milton Keynes Teaching School Alliance, they also provide professional development for teachers throughout their career, which gives our ITT team added expertise to bring to your training journey. Birmingham City University accredits the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

For all routes trainee teachers are immersed in the school environment right from the outset, meaning that they ‘live and breathe’ real-life teaching and learning from day one. Every trainee is carefully matched to a single class in their ‘home school’ where they work and train for most of the year, becoming a valued member of the school team. During the Spring Term, all trainees experience an alternate age phase in a different school, after which they return to their home school for the remainder of the programme.

School Based Training

Course StructureThe course is taught in week-long study blocks giving an immersive learning experience during taught sessions and enabling those from further afield to travel to Corby. This structure also enables trainees to experience school for full weeks and supports schools to find teaching cover.

All applicants offered places on our programme will be expected to attend 5 pre-course induction days during summer 2020.

Entry RequirementsTo be eligible for a place on Pen Green’s Initial Teacher Training programme applicants must have the following essential academic qualifications:

• A Bachelors’ Degree with Honours, or equivalent qualification (2.1 or above preferred but lower classes of degree may be accepted with other evidence of your ability to cope with the rigour of the course)

• GCSEs/O levels, or equivalent qualifications at grade 4/C or above in English, Mathematics and at least one Science

We offer School Direct Tuition Fee and School Direct Salaried Training Funded routes into Teacher Training. Applicants on both routes can elect to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), a Level 7 academic qualification, in addition to working towards their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Routes into Teacher Training

AssessmentAssessment for recommendation for QTS is through a portfolio of evidence, gathered across the year as trainees’ practice develops.

Trainees working towards a PGCE undertake a series of three academic assignments, worth 20 credits each, throughout the year. These assignments are based on trainees’ developing teaching practice and trainees are often able to base their assignments on information gathered for their QTS portfolio.

OverviewWe believe in an Experiential Learning approach where teacher trainees process their experiences in school in relation to theory and research in order to deepen their pedagogical knowledge and understanding.

This is with the aim to improve educational outcomes for all children and especially those in situations of disadvantage. By facilitating this reflective approach to adult learning, participants will have the opportunity to consider their own values and beliefs in relation to their practice, children, families, and their colleagues and leadership.

This gives our trainees the greatest opportunity to experience breadth in their training and to learn from one another’s experiences.

Salaried trainees may come from schools we have not previously worked with and we are always delighted to expand our collaborative network.
