His cars are kept in two side-by-side

spaces; one is dedicated to his passion for Ferraris and technology, while the oth-

er side displays his vintage car interests. The commonality is clear, as his vintage choices are not only perfect, rare beau-ties, but they were also technological

leaders in their day.

Although Greg’s stunning blue LaFerrari wasn’t able to join us this day, the room had many other Ferraris, including his

Enzo, F40, 430 Scud, 599 GTO, 599 Aperta, a new California Spyder, the all-wheel drive FF, and his extremely rare 250 GTO Series II in traditional

Rosso Corso. Seeing this great range of Ferrari herit-age was special, but it went even higher as guest Leslie Brooks smiled nicely while getting a ride around the area with Greg in the

Ferrari 250 GTO.

The second half of his col-lection holds a few cars, including his Aero V8-

powered Hispano Suiza, a 1957 Aston Martin DBR2 (one of only two ever

made), and his only current Alfa Romeo—the 1932 Tipo B (P3) BiPosto. This Alfa started life by winning races

like the Monaco Grand Prix, but it then went back to Ferrari Scuderia to be modified into the only BiPosto P3 with fenders, lights, and room for a small navigator to take on road races like the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia in 1935. With the burly Carlo Pintacuda driving, the car won the Mille Miglia that year, but on this day,

we got to hear what it sounded like.

Greg rolled that Alfa outside to warm it up and make a few runs back and forth past the happy guests. The low roar of the 2.9-liter engine combined with the twin supercharger whine, and when he passed by, you could

even hear the sounds of the trans-mission … symphony to Alfisti ears.

Thanks a few million, Greg!!

Our second host, Bruce W., has a fun irreverence for life and celebrates it

with his wide-ranging collection of cars, toys, art, memorabilia, bicycles, and

more. It’s impressive how he can balance being a nice guy and a successful businessman and entrepreneur.

We were greeted outside by his 1969 Meyers Manx dune buggy sitting next to a rare ‘07 Shelby Mustang 427 Super Snake. The cars inside ranged from a custom Corvair, street rods, a hot rod ’55 Chevy, the Monogram Models T-

bucket, and a low-mileage Ford Boss 429 to a Messerschmitt KR175 from the early 50s. We enjoyed the Ford GT, Lamborghini and Porsche tractors, a Pantera Tom Tjaarda Special, an Auburn Boattail Speedster from 1932, an extremely low-mileage DeLorean, a Maserati Bora, an Edsel wagon, and the

amazing Bertone X1/9 with around 3,500 original miles—including the factory seals on all of the engine bolts, as the car has never had to go in for its factory servicing. Wow!

To show just how much fun Bruce can be? If you ignore the unique rocket motor near the corner and all of the cool memorabilia surrounding you and then simply stare at the full-size replicas of the Mars rovers Spirit and Curiosi-ty parked nearby, you realize just how special this man really is. These two

replicas of the vehicles NASA landed on the surface of Mars were built for the National Geographic Society and then purchased by Bruce so they can make the museum tours in the coming years. Generous, fun, and with a wonderful variety of cars.

People didn’t starve as they toured, as each space had snacks, bottled water, Alfa logo-decorated cookies, coffee, do-

nuts, and other fun shaped cookies. When 1:30 came around, the third

collection opened up with more finger foods, including Nürburgring-shaped cookies and more bottled water. (Thanks goes to Cindy Akana for her help with over 300 wonderful home-baked cookies.)

The third collection, belonging to Jon Shirley, is focused on the cars he enjoys on vintage car drives and race events, and those with a rich history. Greeting us right away as we entered were the Pebble Beach Best of Show-winning 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C2900 B Lungo sitting next to the 1932 8C2300 Touring—two

of the most beautiful and best-driving Alfa Romeos ever produced. The 8C2900 was the car that entered and won the first SCCA race held—which also was the first race at Watkins Glen, New York, back when it was still run on roads and part of the Collier estate. The 8C2300 was part of the Piaggio collection before residing in the Biscaretti Museum for many years as a rolling chassis display.

Missing from Jon’s collection on our tour day was his other special Alfa, the 1934 P3 that the Flying Mantuan (Tazio Nuvo-lari) drove flawlessly to victory in arguably the best Grand Prix race win of all time—the 1935 German Grand Prix. In that race, the older 300-hp P3 was going against the 400+-hp Auto Unions and Mercedes-Benz cars on their home track. Tazio drove the race of his life, always staying close while the German car’s extra horsepower went through tires faster but also had higher top speeds.

As the white flag flew, Manfred von Brauchitsch’s Mercedes-Benz led with Tazio 35 seconds behind, but as they made that last long lap of the Green Hell, von Brauchitsch’s worn

tires gave way, allowing Tazio the chance to slip

past and take the lead until the end. With the faster Mercedes-Benzes beaten, you can only imagine the disappointment and anger on Hitler’s face as the mighty M-Bs and Auto Un-ions took a back seat to the Alfa Romeo P3 #12. Luckily Tazio had the Italian national anthem on

a record, since the confident German band was not prepared to play the song for the winning driver.

Back to the collection … Jon led the tour of his space, going car by car as he passed last year’s Pebble Beach Best of

Show-winning Ferrari 375 MM Rosselini car and the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, as well as the Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder, 500 Mondial Coupe, 250 GT California Spyder, 1997 F1 car, 355 Spyder, 275 GTS/4 NART Alloy Spyder, the extremely early Ferrari 166MM Barchetta from 1949, and the 212 Vignale Coupe. The Jaguars, Porsches, Mercedes-Benzes, and more rounded out the floor space … except for one more big distrac-

tion—one of two purpose-built Ferrari transporters from 1958. Built by FIAT on their 642R truck chassis and powered by an inline 6-cylinder

diesel with a 1,500-rpm redline, it is one of the slower “Ferraris” you’ll find on the road, but rare and cool.

Upstairs at Jon’s is his amazing collection of miniature cars, which focuses primarily on Ferrari and a few Alfa Romeos. Also, there is a stunning display of trophies, plaques, and awards from the numerous race and show events the cars in his collection have earned.

The net revenue from the individual $10 entry fees will be donated to charity, split evenly between Seattle Children’s Hos-pital, The Village Theater, and AOK Friends. This was the first time in many years that either NWARC or FEN had visited Greg and Jon and the first time as a guest of Bruce’s. A huge thank you to our hosts, to the volunteers who did a marvel-ous job, and to all of the guests that made this such a fun “summer” day in the warm NW weather.

3 Garage Tour Cont’’d...

The day developed into a lovely sunny experience once folks arrived on Fox Island.

Rainy gusts and even downpours north and east did not keep the approximately 25

guests away. They came with food in hand and a proper greeting to honor all Irish

(even those Irish for one day only).

The largest non -Alfa award went to The Hebrant’s who also traveled the furthest

and happily stayed the longest…(overnight in their motor home in the neighbor’s

driveway).

Emerson’s drove their nice ’66 Guilia Alfa sedan and represented the marque well.

A couple of FIATs rounded out the Italian stable.

Joe’s Irish fare was delicious as usual and plentiful! So many succulent and yum-

my other foods were offered. Be sure to come next year and see what this group

can cook up! Comments heard in the party atmosphere were, “The sky is so beau-

tiful here!” “I love the drive here.” “You have to try this …….” (by Joe & Lynne F)

Many of you were at the fantastic Three Garage Tour

March 7. Although it was offered only to our club and

Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest, the limit of two hundred

attendees was reached two weeks before the event.

It is was a thrill to see Jon Shirley’s two Pebble Beach

Best of Shows, a myriad of other fine cars and the

most extensive model and memorabilia collections I

can think of. Among other impressive cars was Greg

Whitten’s P3, the first one made, which he started

and drove outside for us. It won the 1934 Grand Prix

of Monaco and the 1935 Mille Miglia. Bruce W’s

eclectic collection was mind blowing and I could have

stayed there all day. It was a beautiful day and it

was fun to see many people that I hadn’t seen in a

long time, as it brought out people from the whole

West Coast. The only question, as pointed out by a

member who came from Whidbey Island, was,

“Where were the Alfas?” A good question, as there

were only a few among the spectator’s cars. On a

day like that, to an event like that, why didn’t we

drive them? There were some fine ones, like the

restored GTA, bright blue Super and the 8C, but it

would have been nice to see a lot more. Oh well,

maybe next time.

Our gracious hosts were so generous with their

narration and opening their collections to us that I

had to send thank you notes. One person who

deserves much more than a note, however, is Fred

Russell. He does so much for our club that we take

for granted. For this event, he contacted Jon, Greg

and Bruce, and over many conversations organized it.

Then he was in charge of admissions, collecting the

money and making sure everyone was a legitimate

member. He did a lot of emailing, then made a list of

everyone’s names so that we could be checked in and

given a wristband that he had ordered. He made an

information sheet with color photos and

descriptions of thirty of the Shirley cars.

Arriving early, Fred made sure everything was

in order, put out the refreshments he had

ordered, then conducted an introductory

meeting. Did you notice the cookies that

were decorated with the Alfa Romeo symbol?

Guess who decorated them? Fred.

Should I mention the three-day Half Fast Laps

every September? Fred completely plans

them, pre-drives the routes, arranges for

meals and lodging and writes a multi-page

illustrated guidebook. Then there is the “Anti-

Football Drive” every January. Same thing.

And guess who is the editor of this newsletter

that you are reading? Fred reminds us of

deadlines, collects all of the copy, writes

articles that should appear that no one else

has submitted and puts it all together. Then

he puts it online, arranges for it to be printed,

picks them up from the printer and mails every one of

them. All of this, when he’s in some foreign country

half of the time, photographing cars for Microsoft /

Turn 10 Studio group. I am probably leaving out

some things, and Fred deserves all of the credit we

give him, and more.

In my last column, I mentioned one of the Giulietta

spider prototypes, number 00007, that was once in

our area. A long-time member, David Sablan, who

now lives in Portland called. He remembered it, and

we had an interesting conversation. It was owned by

John Lorraine, who was a member of the other local

Alfa club, and that just whets my desire for more

information. I mention David by name because he is

a long-time member that has moved to Portland and

he asked about many of you. He had a Sprint Spe-

ciale with recessed headlights that he imported him-

self and a GTA. He wonders about the SS. Does

anyone know of it now?

I usually mention magazine articles but don’t have

the space this time. I have to mention a couple of

covers, though. The May Hemmings Sport and Exotic

Car has a photo of all four series 105 and 115 Alfa

spiders with the caption “Alfa’s Fantastic Spiders.”

The March/April Road & Track cover has an Audi S3

careening around the back of Pacific Raceways, going

through a corner on two wheels. The related articles

are interesting, too.

Top down season is here. Enjoy it!

We have something special planned for the April 8th

meeting at Angelo's in Belle-

vue. Our speaker will be Da-vid Sova a local artist and

architect. When not dealing

with his day job of designing buildings, David paints beauti-

ful pictures of his favorite AL-

FAs and other related auto-motive subjects. Those of you that attended last September's

meeting may remember Shana Blum (the wheel lady) intro-

duced us to some of his artwork. David is a former ALFA owner with an appreciative eye for automotive beauty. Come share

some time with David and hear what inspires his work. Maybe he can do a painting of

your favorite Alfa Romeo.

When: April 8th 6:30 PM—9:00 PM (social, dine, meet)

Where: Angelo’s Restaurant 1830 130th Ave Ne, Bellevue, WA 98005

After David's presentation we should have ample time for discussing matters relating to the 50th birthday party, the AROO joint drive and recent developments at our local Alfa

Romeo dealers.

The Alfa Romeo Museo Storico (Museum) will officially re-open on June 24th, 2015. The rumors have been out since Marchionne mentioned it at the Detroit Auto

Show, but they put a date to it officially. The display should include most of the heritage cars we’d expect or have seen there before. (Almost all the original cars

were dusty but still there last summer.) Added items like a book and memorabilia store will be included as will a new car showroom and event space in the updated building. To add to the event on the 24th, Alfa Romeo will announce and launch the new Giulia model… that hopefully will make it to the USA soon afterwards.

In the home décor news, you can add a great looking lamp to your den, nightstand, desk… wherever. This is no ordinary lamp as it has a great vintage image from a grand prix race with Bugattis and Alfa Romeos prom-

inently displayed. Selling for just $52.72 apiece. Mine arrived and they look great! Go to Sears.com and search for: LAMP IN A BOX, LLC. Trans-portation - Alfa Romeo Sport Silver Lamp

Weather permitting, the 2015 season starts for the Exotics at Redmond Town Center. This is always a good way to start a weekend, and there

are often a number of nice Alfas on display. The targeted first day is coming up on April 4th. Aim to be at the south parking lot of Redmond Town Center from 9-11 AM if the weather is sunny, grey, or anything but wet.

NEW DATES: I accidentally noted the wrong date in last month’s issue about the All Italian Car Gathering at the Triple XXX Drive Inn. The correct date is Sun-day, April 19th. Also, the NWARC 50th Birthday Party has been moved to June

10th. Details to come, but save the date!

The Citroen Club, and it’s member Paul Melrose, created and lead the Spring Drive in mid March. A few Alfisti showed up, but I haven’t heard of any driving their Alfa Romeos. Hmmmm. (Photos by Todd Fitch)

The world may not be safe any longer. Miguel Salguero now has a 3D printer… of course he started with making an Alfa

Romeo em-blem. Cool!

needed to remain in Seattle in order to get my brother and his wife to Vancouver for an Alaska cruise, I called Whit, who willingly agreed to step in and help out.

Actually nothing has changed, except for the person that will be liaison with the NWARC. At the fantastic Three-Garage Tour, Whit told me that he had made reservations for Friday night at the Best Western in Chehalis, in keeping with accom-modations for Saturday night in Ellensburg. On Friday, Whit will be driving some back roads from the Seattle area to Chehalis, as I had intended. If you would like to meet up with him, you should contact him regarding a convenient meet-ing point, just as you would have had to do if I were leading the Friday group. Whit’s cell number is (425) 870-5646. His

e-mail is jolyrgr90 @hotmail.com. If that email appears familiar too you, it may be because you have seen his beautiful Spider with a similar vanity plate. Whit has been a regular participant in the Italian Concours at Columbia Winery and has also attended the FIAT All-Italian show at the XXX in Issaquah.

We will still be starting the “actual” tour 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (May 16), south of Chehalis, near the intersection of I-5 and US-12 (exit 68), and continue with the route announced in past issues of the Iniezione.

I was not surprised to discover that of the original 20 rooms blocked, there remain six king and nine double-queen are still

available at the Best Western – Lincoln Inn and Suites. It is apparent that AROO members are equally complacent in mak-ing advance plans as are NWARCers!! You must be aware that these remaining rooms will be held only until May 1. I found it easiest to call 509-925-4244 to make reservations, but if you prefer, on-line reservations at are available at http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/US/WA/Ellensburg-hotels/BEST-WESTERN-PLUS-Lincoln-Inn---Suites/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=48154. The group code is “Alfa Romeo Club”. The discounted room rate for this event is less than $104. This rate also includes a 10% discount at The Roadhouse Grill, which is where we are din-ing Saturday night.

Please do not delay any longer to make your plans for this event, which hopefully will become an event.

Call and reserve a room before the block is released.

Call me (425-241-9307) or Whit (425-870-5646) to verify your participation and let us know if you want to join the Friday portion of the tour, or only the Saturday-Sunday event with AROO.

I remain fearful that there will be more Oregon cars than Washington Alfas observed on this joint NWARC/AROO tour.

Books For Sale: Starting with the first 4-cylinder races on abandoned airports in the early 1950s

and wrapping up with three big-time professional racing circuits in place at the conclusion of the 1961

season, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns takes the reader through a wonderful decade where skinny-tired cars and their t-shirt-wearing drivers raced for

little more than fun and trophies. The saga is contin-ued with Long Straight’s successor, Weekends of Glo-

ry, which covers the increasingly big time racing era of the 1960s. Long Straights and Hairpin Turns is a one-of-a-kind record of a fabulous era sadly neglect-

ed until this book revived it for all race fans, young and old. It is available from Martin Rudow at

(206) 427-1124, email [email protected], as well as at selected motorsports outlets and bookstores. Sold as a set with its companion volume,

Weekends of Glory, a $139.90 value, for $100 total.
