ThisisthesummereditionofournewsletterwhichagainshowsindividualprojectswhichhavebeenawardedtoDorschcompanies.

Again,theprojectsshowthatweareabletorealizecomprehensivecon-structionprojectsinvolvingnumerousdisciplines.

Forexample,consultingserviceshavebeenawardedtoDCWaterandEnvironmentasapartofalarge-scaleinfrastructureprojectaimingatthenavigabilityoftheNeckarriverfor��5mboatsandthemaintenanceofthestructuralsafetyandusabilityoftheshiplocksforthenext80years.

Thisshowsthatthequestionofsus-tainabilityofourprojectshasbecomeaquestionofgreatimportancewithourGermanclientsaswellaswithourclientsabroad.It’sbecomingmoreandmoreapparentthatthedaysofcheapenergyareover–thisappliestotheArabworldaswell.

WeshouldhaveinmindthatinWest-ernsocietiesnearlyhalfofallenergyconsumedperyearusedforopera-tionofbuildingsandtheirconstruc-tion.Todayabout20percentofthetotalenergyconsumptionaccountsformobility.

TheyoungArabsocietywithitsdemographicchangehasthechancetolearnfromtheshortfallsoftheWesternsocietyandtodobetter.Thefirststepshouldbetore-definetheconsumerrole:foragreaterefficien-cyandavoidanceofconsumptionwehavetofocusonbuildingsandevenonentireurbanareas.Wewillfind

outthatthecityofthefuturecandomuchmorethanbeingefficient.Thecityofthefuturewillbecomeamajorenergyproducer.

Let’sbabtizethisvisionofanidealcity:thePost-Kyoto-City.ThePost-Kyoto-Cityenergyistreatedonthreelevels:sustainableproduction–effi-cientuse–avoidingofconsumption.Inthefuture,buildingswillserveaspowergeneratorsandasagricul-turalresources.Buildingshavetobeproductive:fromsolarpanelsthatproducepowertotree-filledterracesthatrecyclewater.Thebuildingofthefuturewillwork,literally,fromtheinsideout.

Whatdowereceive,ifweimplementsustainabilityonanurbanlevel?ThePost-Kyoto-Citywillhaveahighurbandensity,offeringahighqualityoflifewithoutpollutionandwithalotofgreenandopenspaceforurbanlife.Itwillcontinuouslyattractnewpeopleandcreatejobsforthem.Itwillbeanurbanmachinewithacapacitytoturnmigrantsintofellowcitizenswithatleastafootholdontheladdertoprosperity.

Infrastructure Investments in Emerging Markets – the Opportunities Now

Populationgrowth,migrationtolargercities,thelimitationsofnaturalresourcesandalargerawarenessandconcernforsocialandenvironmentalissuesaredrivingtheneedforinfra-structureinvestments.Thisisparticu-larlytrueindevelopingcountriesandemergingeconomies,withpredictedshortages,particularlyinthesupplyofenergyandwater.

Atthesametime,theFalcongroupofcompanies,aprivateequityandassetmanagementfirmspecialisinginemergingmarkets,withofficesinSouthAmerica,SwitzerlandandtheMiddleEast,iswitnessinganincreas-ing„investorappetite“forcertaininfrastructureinvestments.Investorswhoappreciatemid-andlongtermpredictablereturnswithprofilesoflimitedriskarelookingtodiversifyandinvestinsomeoftheMiddleEasternandAfricangrowthecono-mies.

Theinvestorchallengeisgettingaccesstosuchinvestmentprojectstostartwith,butalsohowtofilteroutthepotentially„gooddeals“fromthe„notsogood“.Lastnotleast,theyneedareliableprojectpartnerwhoismanagingtheprojecttheyareinvestingin.

Ontheotherhand,thedemandforprojectsandinvestmentsisclearlythere.Attheforefrontarerenewableenergysolutions,waterandwastemanagementinfrastructureprojects.Ageingexistingfacilitiesrequiremodernisation.Andahistoriclackofinvestmentinupgradingthecapaci-tiesisoftenaddingtotheshortfalls.Howeverfromthecountries´per-spectiveitisnotjustaboutgettingatechnicalsolution;oftentheyarealsofacingfinancialhurdles.

Whatthegovernmentsarelookingforisacombinationoftechnology

transferaswellasafinancingstruc-ture.Giventhewiderangeofmod-ernisationandupgradingrequire-mentsthestateormunicipallevelareaimingfora„one-stop-solution“partner,thatcancontributemorethanjustonepartofthesolution.

EPCisthebuzzword–Engineering,ProcurementandConstruction,butgenerallyalsoinvolvingacustom-madefinancingpackage(EPCF).

Takenaltogetherthiswillprovideaturnkeysolution,atafixedcontractpriceandfixedcompletiondate.Dor-schandDCCChavetakenthesestepsandthroughtheirpresenceinmanyofthedevelopingcountriesarewellpositionedtoaddresstheirneeds.

DCCCisacompanyjointlyformedbyDorschCorporateSolutionsGmbHandCCCGrouptoutilizetheircom-binedexperiencesininternationalEPCprojectsandjointlyfocusonEPCFprojects.

Foreachinfrastructureproject,thevarietyofexistinglegacyinstallationsneedstobecombinedwiththeviewofthefutureandanunderstandingofthe(master)developmentplanforthelocationsconcerned.

Ihavebeenworkinginthefieldofwaterengineeringsince2004.

�.7millionsofresidents,isthecityofSyriawiththehighestpopulation,Iwasabletogainnewexperience,andsoIcametoGermanyinSeptemberof�988,becauseIwantedtodomyPhD.

MystaystartedinLeipzigattheHerderinstitute.There,IhaveintenselystudiedGermanfortwosemesters.

IhavebeenlivingwithmyfamilyinthecityofNauenintheNorthwestofBerlinfor�2yearsnow.Mywifealsoworkshereasaregistrar.

WhatIappreciatealotarethe“typi-calGerman”virtues:punctuality,orderliness,tidiness,assiduousness,diligence,andthewholeheartednesseveninsmallissues.

In�96�IwasborninaChristianvil-lageinthe“FertileCrescent”inSyria,whichthechildrenherelearnaboutinthe5thform.IalsowenttoschoolthereanddidmyA-levelsin�979.

„FertileCrescent“isthetermforahigh-rainfallwinterrainarea,whichissituatedNorthoftheSyriandesert,orratherintheNorthoftheAra-bianpeninsula.ItenclosesLevante,MesopotamiabetweentheEuphratesandtheTigrisandWesternIran.Thatareaisconsideredaregionoforiginofthetransitionfromanomadiccul-turetoanagriculturalone,aswellasanareawithsomeoftheoldestcityculturesoftheworld.

Thedecisionwastakenonthemorn-ingofApril�9,20�0.Intheeveningofthesameday,�00workersandstaff,50trailertrucks,fivemillingmachinesandfourasphaltpaverswerealreadyinaction.Duringtheairportclosurewhichlastedfor54consecutivehours,theexistingbinderandsurfacescourseswerecutdowntoadepthof�2-�4cm,removed,andreplacedwithnewpavementoveratotallengthof�,�00mandawidthof4�.�5m(2x20.58m),leav-ingalonga�.85mstripearoundtherunwaycentreline.

Withinthishighlycompetitivebid-dingprocessNeckarschleusenwastheonlytenderersuccessfulinobtainingtwooutoffivelots–eachawardedforanindependentprojectteam.Theconsultingservicesarepartofalarge-scaleinfrastructureprojectaimingatthenavigabilityoftheNeckarriverfor��5mboatsandthemaintenanceofstructuralsafetyandusabilityoftheshiplocksforthenext80years.

On7May20�0,BBIBerlinAirportcelebratedthetopping-outceremonyforthepassengerterminalofthenewBerlinBrandenburgInternationalAirport(BBI).

Thenewterminal,settoopenon�0October20��,isdesignedtoaccom-modate,atfirst,upto27millionpassengersperyear.

TheterminalisU-shaped,andcon-sistsofacentralbuilding,onemainpierandtwosidepiers(northandsouth).Themainandsouthpierswillbeequippedwithpassengerboard-ingbridges,whilethenorthpierwillprovidewalkboardingpositions.Theairport’srailwaystationwillbelocatedonthelowestfloorofthesix-storeyterminal,andwillcompriseof�platformsforlong-distanceandcommutertrains.

Altogether,thenewBBIAirportwillextendoveranareaof�,470ha,whichistheequivalentofapproxi-mately2,000footballfields.TheJointVentureformedbyDCAirportsandtwootherGermanengineeringfirmsisleadingthegeneralplanninganddesigneffortforairsidecivilworksandopenspaces.Thescopeofserv-icesincludesairsidetrafficareas(run-waysystem,taxiwaysandaprons),surfacedrainage,airfieldgroundlighting,apronfloodlighting,fuel-hydrantsystems,airsideroads,andperimeterroads.

Itcould,however,beverified,thatthehorizontalforcescanbewornbymassivebaseplateswhichwillbeplacedonbothsidesofthetunnel.
