INGQEPHU (it’s about fashion) is a Zulu word

meaning fashion. The name had to represent

what’s lacking in South African fashion publica-

tions a black voice. Not that INGQEPHU is go-

ing to be a black magazine. As a country we need

to move from something’s being black or white

and just be a united nation,But that’s another

issue for a totally different issue.

As if freelancing for fourteen years was not

scary enough,I took on a scariest project

ever,publishing a magazine.Uncharted waters

for me, but like everything I’ve ever taken on in

my life I’m taking it head on. I love Fashion and

I find it very restricted in most media house in

South Africa so the next logical step was for me

to create a fashion playground for fashion lovers,

fashion professionals and aspiring fashion profes-

sionals this is going to be a fashion creative outlet

no idea is too out there on this stage.

As I write this I’m having mental images of

street fashion in London in the nineties. No rules

no restriction.i collect 90’s vintage ID magazines and for me that was one of the most exciting times in

fashion the abandon! I hope this is going to be the space of fashion abandon. xx

She speaks with her eyes to the camera in front of her, ignoring the brilliant flash-es of the lights attacking her from all sides. She swirls and twirls in her Thula Sindi dress. She knows this dress well; she wore it during the first Africa’s Next Top Model Competition. Although, the first time she had on this dress, she had no way of know-

ing that she’d win. She was just as far from her dream as she was from her home in Kampa-la, Uganda. She may have trembled then, but now Aamito behaves like a seasoned professional.

In Uganda, modelling isn’t a career option. It’s hardly seen as a job by the public; it’s a hobby, at best. While models may not be derided, they’re not exactly regarded positively. If a girl’s got it, she’s got to take it somewhere else.

For Aamito, that journey started in Kenya. With the blessings of her mother, Aamito boarded a bus headed for Nairobi. And if the sixteen hours it took to get there from Kampala filled her with trepida-tion, she held steady to her goal of becoming of only twelve girls vying for the title of Africa’s Next Top Model. Aamito travelled to Kenya on her own, though there were six other Ugandan girls at the Kenyan auditions. Without the money to stay, Aamito headed back before she knew she’d made it through.

Getting into the competition was the start of a dream for Aamito, just as it was the begin-ning of a journey that would take her to the model house in Cape Town and then on to New York with a one year contract at DNA Model Management. But, it wasn’t an easy ride.

As an only child, Aamito wasn’t used to living with so many differing opinions and ideas. She had to learn to live with a large group of people and to compete with them for her dream. It was an emotionally difficult process, but just as her eyes learned to hold the camera – she learned to hold her ground. When the tears became dangerously close to spilling, she’d call her mom, or focus on what she could do rather than the hurtful words of judges and competitors.

Aamito is close with her parents, and claims that her peace and positivity come from her mother. Wher-ever it came from, no one can deny that she’s got a soft glow inside as well as out. When challenged to do an underwater shoot in freezing temperatures, Aamito, who can barely swim, found the process tranquil.

She may be 21, but she’s an old soul. Her faith keeps her focused and she holds strong, even when she’s not in front of the camera. She finds solace when faced with eyes that match the smile of the wearer. Aamito is comfortable with herself, despite growing up in a culture that doesn’t revere the slender bodies of models. For her, a contract in New York isn’t about her own goals; she wants to transform the idea of modelling as a career path on the African continent. And, even though she’s a long way from “the child that does not grow fat,” she’s still got miles to travel. But, for Aamito, that journey is her dream.

To answer the question, No. 7.
