GUAYMAS

GUAYMAS

is a port city in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is located

117 kilometers south of Hermosillo, capital of Sonora and

north of Ciudad Obregón. It is the municipal seat of the

municipality of Guaymas.

Guaymas is one of the ports of Mexico called "Height"

on Mexico's Pacific coast, is one of the major shrimp

producing cities in northern Mexico and previously also

was noted for its oyster catch.

HISTORY

In 1539 , explorers boats Santa Agueda and Trinidad ,

sent by Hernán Cortés, the command of Captain Francisco

de Ulloa , arrived to Guaymas Bay , the captain decided to

give the name of "sea port " because of the good

impression that gave the conquerors place . They went

ashore to take possession on behalf of the King of Spain ,

giving the name " Bay of possession " to what is now the

Bay of Guaymas.

The first settlers , an ancient tribe called the

Guaimas , Family Seris , lived by fishing , used dress

composed of feathers pelican. Its neighbors to the

south, the Yaquis , Seris northwest , the northern

Pima . Peacetime traded with other tribes , skins of

seabirds and salt in exchange for fruit less arid

lands.

The municipality of Guaymas has a transport

infrastructure consisting of a 986.8 km road

network, with the Federal Highway 15 main line of

communication, of which 118.2 correspond to the

main network, secondary network 184.6 and 684 km

are roads rural or neighborhood.

FISHING

It is the most important activity and main source of

revenue, with large installed capacity for capturing,

processing and marketing.

The fishing guaymense employs 11,800 people in

325 other capture and engage in aquaculture.

Provides 70 percent of the state total fish production,

the main species caught, sardines, shrimp and squid.

AGRICULTURE

Irrigation infrastructure for agriculture in addition

to the 186 wells, has the Ignacio Alatorre Dam that

is located in the Valle de Guaymas with total capacity

of 27 million 700 thousand cubic meters, and the

TOURISM

Guaymas offers many tourist attractions such as Golf, snorkeling,

fishing, horseback riding, ecotourism tours, cycling, diving and

Only Thanks to Sonora, unique in the country, you can enter

program vehicles from the United States without paying or doing

paperwork and permits, from Nogales to Empalme.

The tourist beach area is located northwest of the port, with the

Bay region of San Carlos (Mexico) and surroundings and less

Bacochibampo Bay or Miramar.
