Stop thief! Stop thief!

¡Al ladrón! ¡Al ladrón!

This woman has stolen the suitcase from the man chasing her.

Esta mujer ha robado la maleta del hombre la perseguía

But what's in the suitcase? .

Pero lo que hay en la maleta?

Why, stolen money, of course! Half a million dollars! ¿Por qué, robado dinero, por

supuesto! Medio millón de dólares!. Earlier in the morning, the couple committed an

Page 16: Ingles intermedio 6

armed robbery in a bank in the town centre. Temprano en la mañana, la pareja ha

cometido un robo a mano armada en un banco en el centro de la ciudad.

Unluckily for him, the man has been tricked by his accomplice and she's run

off with the loot. Por desgracia para él, el hombre ha sido engañado por su cómplice y

ella está corriendo con el botín.

Quick! She's probably hiding, and above all, keeping out of sight. ¡Rápido! Ella

probablemente esté escondida, y sobre todo, mantener fuera de la vista.

She goes to the airport to leave town. Ella va al aeropuerto para salir de la ciudad.

There are two flights to Chicago this afternoon, but she knows too many people there

and someone would end up indicating her presence to the police, or worse, to her

accomplice. Hay dos vuelos con destino a Chicago esta tarde, pero ella sabe que

demasiada gente allí y alguien terminaría lo que indica su presencia a la policía, o peor

aún, a su cómplice.

Better off leaving the country to launder the money abroad.Mejor dejar el país para blanquear el dinero en el extranjero.

In the departure lounge, the woman entrusts the money to her brother,

who'll take the suitcase on the plane. En la sala de embarque, la mujer confía el

dinero a su hermano, que va a tener la maleta en el avión.

She, on the other hand, will cross the border by car where the risk of being

recognised is less. Ella, por otro lado, se cruza la frontera en coche, donde el riesgo de

ser reconocido es menor. .

The man collects his ticket and, boarding card in hand, takes his seat in the plane.El hombre recoge su billete y, a bordo de la tarjeta en la mano, toma su asiento en el avión.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, the policemen investigating the

robbery are following up their research. Mientras tanto, en el otro lado de la ciudad,

los policías que investigan el robo son el seguimiento de su investigación.

They're inspecting the disused warehouse, in which the woman hid for a few minutes,

barely after the robbery, and they're trying to retrace her steps. Están inspeccionando

el almacén en desuso, en el que la mujer se escondió por unos minutos, apenas después

del robo, y que están tratando de volver sobre sus pasos.

Let's hope they find some clues that will enable them to recuperate the

money and arrest her. Esperemos que encontrar algunas pistas que les permitan

recuperar el dinero y arrestar a ella.

Page 17: Ingles intermedio 6

Once in Canada, the man with the suitcase leaves the plane to fetch his

luggage. Una vez en Canadá, el hombre con la maleta sale el avión en busca de su

equipaje.

The Canadian customs officers have been alerted by an informer of his arrival. Los

funcionarios de aduanas canadienses han sido alertados por un conocimiento de su

llegada.

Are the customs officers going to open the suitcase and find the stolen money?¿Los funcionarios de aduanas va a abrir la maleta y encontrar el dinero robado?

No! They decide to shadow their man and try and find the other accomplices

who will be responsible for laundering the money. ¡No! Ellos deciden a la sombra

de su hombre y tratar de encontrar los otros cómplices que se encargarán de lavar el

dinero.

When the time is right, they'll send in the police to arrest them. Cuando sea el

momento adecuado, van a enviar a la policía para arrestarlos.

In such a situation, the criminals don't have much chance of escaping...En tal situación, los delincuentes no tienen mucha oportunidad de escapar ...

After a chase, the policemen end up arresting their man and handcuffing his

wrists. It is said that blood ties are often the strongest, but the brother ends

up giving his sister away and indicating her hide-out. Después de una persecución, al final la policía a arrestar a su hombre y esposar sus muñecas. Se dice que los lazos de sangre son a menudo más fuerte, pero el hermano acaba dando su hermana de distancia y que indica a su escondite.

This is quite often how customs officers manage to catch the larger

smugglers: an anonymous phone call, and the criminal is spotted

disembarking from the plane or boat. Esto es muy a menudo cómo los funcionarios

de aduanas logran atrapar a los contrabandistas más grandes: una llamada telefónica

anónima, y el criminal se vio desembarcar del avión o en barco.

So you'd better humour your enemies if you want to avoid giving them the

idea for a very bad joke! Así que mejor que el humor a sus enemigos si quiere evitar

tener que darles la idea de una broma de muy mal!

Hotel reservations 2 h 52

You've been looking for a hotel, and it's nearly night-time when you finally reach a guesthouse.

Do you have any vacancies?

Do you have a room, please?

Could you put us up for the night?

We have nothing left, I'm afraid. We're fully booked for the weekend.

Do you have any idea where we might find something?

Could we have the bill, please?

We will.

Is it a double room?

Why don't you try in the town centre? There are plenty of hotels there.

I thought I saw a swimming pool.

Page 36: Ingles intermedio 6

People often go home with their hotel keys, don't they?

What time is breakfast served?

Do you really think we'll find one at this time?

Oh wait! I might have something. Someone just left apparently.

We're not that unlucky after all!

Is there a bathroom?

Your television doesn't work!

Could you send someone up to fix the television?

Would you like to see the room?

Do you have any vacancies?

We forgot our towels.

Yes, is that possible?

Page 37: Ingles intermedio 6

We'll probably be staying a couple of nights.

Follow me, please. It's on the fourth floor. The stairs are right here, but we'll take the

lift.

I'll try to remember!

Is there much noise at night?

A twin-bedded room, with a child's bed.

Except for the noisy air conditioning in the room, yes!

Here's the room. It faces the sea.

Yes, but I like adventure!

Absolutely nothing?

There's a nice view, then, during the day?

Not in the attic, is it?

There is both bath and shower.

Page 38: Ingles intermedio 6

Fine, we'll take it.

Could you put us up for the night?

I'll get my wife first.

Time for us to head back!

The room is £ 97 a night, including breakfast of course. A single room.

We will.

Well, we haven't got much choice, have we?

Just a minute, I'm under the shower.

How long are you planning to stay? Except for the noisy air conditioning in the room,

yes!

Could you send someone up to fix the television?

You wouldn't have a bigger room, would you?

Page 39: Ingles intermedio 6

We'll probably be staying a couple of nights.

What kind of room do you need?

We only have double rooms left

That'll be fine.

That will do.

It doesn't matter.

Would you like to see the room?

 I'll get my wife first.

Follow me, please. It's on the fourth floor. The stairs are right here, but we'll take the lift

 What time is breakfast served?

Breakfast is served between 8 and 9:30, lunch between 12 and 1:30 and dinner between 7:30 and 10 o'clock.

Do you have packed lunches?

You have to ask for them the night before.

Here's the room. It faces the sea.

Is there a bathroom?

No, this is all we have.

The room is £ 97 a night, including breakfast of course.

Well, we haven't got much choice, have we?

Gosh! Hotels are expensive here!

How much are your single rooms?

£ 69, sir.

How long are you planning to stay?

Just one night.

We'll probably be staying a couple of nights.

We're only planning to stay a few nights.

I'd like to stay in expensive hotels with lavish leisure facilities. I'd go to ones by the beach so I'd be able to bathe in the sea everyday. I'd always have a double room with a view of the bay. I'd order room service everyday, and I'd sip tropical cocktails by the pool. I'd take holidays all the timeto

Have you got your passport and your tickets?

Are the suitcases ready? They are?

Okay, then let's get going!

What would you say to a stay in the country, in a self-catering cottage?

Getting up with the sun, living to nature's rhythm, feeding the chickens and

helping the farmer milk his cow, Daisy!

What's better than having a nap in the hay and in the evening, a good meal

by the fireside?

But maybe you prefer a seaside resort, renting a villa with a sea view and

sunbathing all day, lying in a deck chair?

You can also go to a hotel, in Miami, by the sea.

But maybe you prefer a seaside resort, renting a villa with a sea view and sunbathing

all day, lying in a deck chair?

You can also go to a hotel, in Miami, by the sea.

On arriving you ask reception for the key to your room.

Once the suitcases are unpacked, you've got several options:

recover from the jet lag by the swimming pool, sip exotic cocktails or do some water

sports.

The evening come, your dinner awaits you.

All of the hotel's staff is there at your service.

Nothing is left to chance: entertainment is guaranteed for the night owls!

No need to lay the table, to vacuum, to prepare your breakfast or even do

your laundry.

Now that's a real dream holiday!

But you may prefer going up to the mountains and their beautiful chalets.

Take enough provisions in case there are heavy snowfalls!

After a day on the slopes, you like to get together with friends in the warm.

And for those who like adventure, there's camping, taking advantage of the

open air.

For a few days, live in luxury, spending the nights sleeping under the stars.

I thought I saw a swimming pool.

Can we play tennis here?

Are there any interesting sights in the area?

We forgot our towels.

A tour of the town 2 h 38

How lucky you are! Your birthday present this year is a sightseeing tour... The guide is

now speaking to you: "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our medieval city!"

Medieval? Is it really medieval?

Is it that old?

I thought it was damaged during the war!

We'll take you on a guided tour of the town centre first.

Then you'll have the whole afternoon to visit the castle.

Is it far from here?

I've heard a lot about it!

Yes, I don't want to miss it!

The art gallery, too, is worth visiting, if you have the time.

Page 66: Ingles intermedio 6

We won't have time to see everything!

What about the ancient amphitheatre?

We might have time tomorrow.

We'll have a short walk through the old centre now. Is everyone here?

Are there any good views?

Yes, these people belong to another group.

Wait! My friend's just gone to the toilet!

There are several good views.

This is one of them.

Is that the Town Hall over there?

Where's the mosque?

Is that the Abbey?

Can you also see the tower on the far side?

I can't see any tower!

Page 67: Ingles intermedio 6

No, I can only see a windmill.

Yes! It looks damaged.

And this is the cathedral.

Doesn't it have very famous stained-glass windows?

What a beautiful arch!

Could we have a look inside?

Now, this is the covered market.

It looks very old!

Not a flea market?

Is it still open?

We are now coming to the ramparts.

They've remained in good condition.

And what's that over there?

Page 68: Ingles intermedio 6

Is that a minaret?

And these stones are the remains of a monastery.

There are lovely flower beds here.

My feet are starting to ache!

There's a nice view from here, too.

There are three old monuments in the picture. One is a church or cathedral with a large, square tower. Another is a medieval tower which stands on a hill with a flag on the top. It is surrounded by trees. The third monument is a medieval castle with several towers. It is surrounded by water, but has a bridge. T h e R i v e r T h a m e s T h o m a s à B e c k e t t

You'll now be going on to the castle.

That was an interesting visit!

Do we have to pay a fee to get in?

Aren't you coming with us?

Good afternoon! I will be your guide through this magnificent castle.

The castle was restored in 1724.

Page 79: Ingles intermedio 6

I wouldn't like to live here!

 It's a bit dark, I must admit!

If you'd like to follow me upstairs...

No, I'm sorry, you can't go in there.

Why not?

 Because it's dangerous

These are the statues of the Royal Family.

This room used to be the Count's bedroom.

Was this his bed?

 No, it wasn't.

The gardens are surrounded by a high wall.

This drawbridge is really fascinating.

The castle has been classified since the late thirties.

You say that the castle's first stone was laid in 1224. You never know exactly, do you, when something happened so long ago? In Britain, you can see lots of stately homes, mansions and castles. You have a royal family in the United Kingdom. You can tell as soon as you set foot in Britain, as the Queen's head is on all the notes, coins and stamps.

Just as you go out, there's a souvenir shop.

SoluciónValidar

Well, I think I've shown you everything.

How would you fancy a trip around the world in less than five

minutes?

Brandishing her torch as if at the start of a race, the Statue of Liberty

seems to show us the way.

There are tourists inside, but you probably cannot see them.

Our first stop is in Washington D.C., at the White House, where

the President of the USA works and lives.

Numerous tourists come and visit every year.

Building began in 1792, and since 1800, all her tenants have left a mark

of their passage.

Despite her great age, the pollution and the tourists' comings

and goings, the walls of the White House keep their brilliant

whiteness.

She really does wear her name well!

On the other side of the Atlantic, only a few hours by plane,

there's London, the capital of the United Kingdom.

Page 88: Ingles intermedio 6

The Thames has played an important role in the history of this

ancient port.

The Palace of Westminster is found on the banks of this river.

In 1605, Guy Fawkes dug a tunnel under it to plant a bomb.

He was then arrested and executed.

If we carry on down the river, we come to Tower Bridge, behind

the Tower of London, which is on your left.

This is where the beefeaters watch over the royal family's

jewels.

If they were ever lost, the queen wouldn't have a crown any more.

And can you imagine the queen without a proof of identity?

On the other side of the Channel, on the European continent,

royal families have almost all disappeared.

Among those that remain are the Spanish, Belgians and Dutch.

This castle, in the southwest of France, probably belonged to a

noble and rich family, which must have suffered a lot in 1789

during the French Revolution.

We can say that the people of the period lifted their heads up

high in rebellion and the aristocrats lost theirs!

France then became the country of human rights.

Let's discover the last monument constructed during Napoleon's

reign: the Arc de Triomphe.

At the foot of this monument rests the unknown soldier, in homage to all

the fallen soldiers of World War I, which ravaged Europe at the beginning

of the twentieth century.

A flame stays permanently alight in memory of them lest we

may forget...

Page 89: Ingles intermedio 6

If we go down the Champs-Elysées, we come to the largest

square in Paris: the place de la Concorde.

Let's change scenery completely, cross the Rhine and go to

Cologne.

This town is famous for its gothic style cathedral.

It's so big!

Let's leave the north for warmer places!

For Barcelona, notably, which was the birthplace of the artist Gaudí.

His bold and singular creations brighten the town and the

tourists love to visit these colourful monuments.

Another sight, not to be missed, is the Plaza de España.

Here, during the summer nights, the central fountain lights up and a son

et lumière show is put on for you.

The impressive speed of the Spanish drivers shouldn't leave you

indifferent either!

Please do. I don't think I could take any more! I'm at the end of my tether!

The Managing Director went away on business for a few days. Since he arrived late at the hotel, he needed to get a bite to eat. Throughout the year the hotel received many prestigious guests. Staff accommodated guests in such a manner that they felt totally at ease. The hotel provided excellent facilities like state-of-the-art technology for business people. In fact, the hotel catered for all the Managing Director's requests

This hotel employee is very smart in his outfit.

The hotel where he works must surely have several stars.

But the employees’ elegance isn’t everything.

Indeed, everything must be perfect in a hotel: the organisation,

the service and even the smile.

It’s surprising to see the number of people who, satisfied with a place,

come back to it every year.

Take, for example, a simple breakfast.

It seems very ordinary to order a full breakfast and to ask for it to be

served to you in bed.

But it’s not as easy for the bellboy to bring it to you and not stumble on

the stairs.

Mind you don’t spill anything!

Sitting in her bed, waiting patiently for her coffee, the guest

obviously has no idea of all this.

Whatever the time and whatever the event, the waiter must always

listen and be at the guest’s service.

The noisiest place in a hotel, and where people are the busiest,

is probably the kitchen.

The hotel manager, moreover, is found more often there than in his

office.

Page 106: Ingles intermedio 6

Managing staff is always difficult, especially when it’s a team of

chefs who want, at all costs, to accompany the head chef’s dish

with a bilberry sauce, when a simple orange sauce, ten times

less costly, would be perfectly adequate!

They cut, grate, sprinkle, peel, scale fish... What talent! It’s a

true culinary art.

The meal is a significant element among those services provided in a

hotel and the food must be irreproachable.

Obviously, the produce must be fresh and that requires working

with a reliable supplier.

The fruits and vegetables are imported from the four corners of the

globe and it’s necessary to have complete confidence in the company in

charge of delivering the goods.

It’s impossible to plan for two hundred covers without being

certain of getting in time, and on time, fresh produce of an

excellent quality.

The choice of the supplier depends on the best quality-price ratio and

the delivery time.

It’s not uncommon to call upon the services of several professionals at

the same time.

The restaurant opens its doors at the beginning of the evening

and it’s not unusual to see customers come in who aren’t

staying in the hotel.

All the waiters and waitresses are dressed up to the nines: shoes well

polished, hair well groomed, ties well done up, skirts well ironed...

As usual for the service sector, a restaurant’s success depends

enormously on its reputation.

The service must be impeccable.

Page 107: Ingles intermedio 6

When you have a job in the service sector, never forget that the

customer is always right!

And if he does happen to be wrong, keep it to yourself!

If the customer is wrong...

tell your boss.

The training course 1 h 29

I'd like you to use your work placement to set up new training programs for H H

It must be difficult to keep them up to date with new metal technologies.

I'm sure the employees appreciate your commitment.

Have you contacted the Training and Enterprise Council?

Page 111: Ingles intermedio 6

Wherever they work, all our employees need training. But we're not always sure how

to offer it to them. How much do you know about training workshops?

The TEC course offers are on their website.

We could set up in-company training.

I'm told the National Training Organisation can advise us on that.

In any case, I'd like you to ask the heads of department what they believe is needed.

I'll start with Production.

Accounting might be a good place to start.

You'll have the results and a plan of action by next week.

Hi, I'm the Production director. What can I do for you?

Within two months, we'd like to have training workshops running.

The question is what I can do for you! We'd like to help train your people.

We'd like to start training workshops for the employees on the shop floor.

We could do with some training on all this new technology we've been getting. We

had record amounts of scrap from our last run of steel bolts! Unfortunately, it's a

hundred miles' drive to the nearest training centre.

Page 112: Ingles intermedio 6

We'll have to plan on work-based training, I suppose.

Day release is one possibility to consider.

Funding assistance may be available if we train in-company

I think in-house training is probably the best option, as you say. But how will we know

if we're up to standard?

The NTO will guide us through the process if we need their help.

The National Vocational Qualifications can be helpful.

Why don't we contact the equipment manufacturer?

It's agreed, then: we'll train in-company on the new machines. Let's meet to develop

a syllabus next week.

How about Friday?

I would rather meet later this week if possible.

When do you think we can begin the training?

So you'd like the TEC to help update our employees' skills.

Absolutely. At H H we believe in lifelong learning.

Yes, but we'd like to do so within the plant.

Page 113: Ingles intermedio 6

What company can afford not to?

What kind of training do our workers need exactly?

They're having trouble adjusting to the new machine.

Above all, they need training on the LD-20.

We've invested in new technology, and we need to train them on it.

We can do workplace assessments for you if you train in-company, and we'll provide

you with a syllabus if you need it as well. Is there anything else I can do before our

meeting next week?

Everything seems quite all right for the time being.

That's all for now, but I'll be in touch!

No, I can't think of anything else.

So only the marketers will be trained off-site, then?

The others will be trained here according to the NTO standards.

Yes, they'll be doing a one-week training course in six months' time.

That's right!

What sort of training will the marketing team be receiving?

Page 114: Ingles intermedio 6

The training course is about using the Internet as a marketing tool.

It's a course on marketing and new media.

They're getting a refresher course on brand management.

The company's been waiting to exploit the Internet more.

The marketing director is reluctant, though.

But are our products right for Internet marketing?

That's what the marketing director said.

That's a relief. We've had some problems in that area.

Well, you're only as good as your brand name.

Hopefully the course will help.

So far we've been working without the necessary training.

Page 115: Ingles intermedio 6

Well, let's get to work on planning our work-based training, then! Shall we meet in a

few days?

I'm not sure I'll have what I need by then.

I'll contact the training companies in the meantime.

SoluciónValidar

He had a five-year wait to become company manager.

Congratulations! You've got your certificate of higher education.

The time has come to go and look for work.

The telephone quickly becomes essential.

Having sent several curriculum vitae, you are finally called in for an interview.

Try not to seem too tense, otherwise you risk making a bad impression.

Luckily for you, your application has been accepted.

You're hired! Welcome to the team!

Becoming a worker does, however, present a few inconveniences:

commuting every day takes a very long time and the traffic jams are

never-ending!

And that's not counting the taxes you'll have to pay!

By the way, what career have you chosen?

Are you a waiter?

Do you work as a shop assistant? On the market? So no more lie-ins for

you!

Or have you chosen a career where a uniform is compulsory? Like in the

police or the army? Watch out for Sergeant Nit-picker, he doesn't miss a

thing!

For certain jobs, suits are to be worn.

Appearance counts a great deal.

Receptionists must always be well dressed, secretaries as well, because

they are the first to come into contact with clients.

It is important for estate agents to make a good impression, just as it is

for car dealers.

Page 127: Ingles intermedio 6

Does a tie make one look more credible?

What judge would listen to a plaintiff wearing jeans and a jumper? None.

No more than the person to be tried would accept the decision of a judge

in a T-shirt and tennis shoes.

There are some jobs that are done outdoors, like those of a

farmer, horticulturist, fisherman or shepherd.

One job done from above, in a total lack of oxygen, is that of an

astronaut!

You mustn't suffer from vertigo if you want to work way up there!

Racing driver is another high-risk profession.

Being a professional golfer is less dangerous, but it demands

just as much discipline.

You must have courage and patience to reach the top and become

champion.

Footballers train for years before reaching their goal!

Their careers are short-lived, like those of dancers.

But don't think it's any easier working from home, especially if

you've got your children to look after!

There are also people who change career-paths.

Criminals who steal money suddenly find out they have a new vocation,

that of prisoner!

There are others who don't want to succeed by legal means.

They prefer to falsify important documents.

To become a company manager, you must have ambition,

motivation and talent, you have to work hard and not go to

sleep!

Then you can harvest the fruits of your labour by purchasing, for

example, a beautiful car, a flat in town, a house in the country with

Page 128: Ingles intermedio 6

several hectares of land and a villa by the sea for those well-deserved

holidays!

You must wear a uniform.

You must work late every day.

What is suggested about both judges and plaintiffs?

They both wear T-shirts.

They are more credible than tennis players.

Job search 1 h 21

Good morning! Welcome to J.O.B Recruitment Agency. I'm Mr Hopkins. How are you?

Fine, thank you. And you?

Not too good; I spilled coffee on my blazer!

A little stressed. I have an important meeting later.

Let's discuss what you're looking for. Do you intend to stay in advertising?

Page 132: Ingles intermedio 6

Yes, but I'd like to get into upper management.

No, I want to move into marketing.

I think so, but I'm not happy with my current company's outlook.

What sort of background do you have?

I have a master's degree in Finnish poetry.

Five years in sales, and three in the creative department.

I've been an account manager since the beginning.

And what other resources have you been using in your job search?

I read the newspapers, but I'm mainly counting on you!

I haven't got that far yet, to be honest.

The trade papers contain a lot of adverts.

Have you been in contact with any potential employers?

I have an interview next week with Nolan Ryan.

I have an interview next week.

Someone from Nolan Ryan is seeing me next Tuesday.

No, it's all in the questionnaire I filled out.

I'm willing to travel if necessary, but not to relocate.

Page 133: Ingles intermedio 6

I don't want to have to relocate.

Let me just show you our Internet site before you go. The vacancies are updated

daily, so you should check them often.

But I thought that was your job.

How many jobs do you list at a time?

That's helpful!

That's all for today. We'll contact you next week with some offers.

Arranging to leave work for the interviews might be tricky.

I'll fax you my updated CV before then.

That's a relief. I'm in rather a hurry!

Hello! I'm Mr Ballard, Human Resources Manager here at Nolan Ryan. It's a pleasure

to meet you at last!

Likewise!

I'm sorry I couldn't get away sooner.

I'm glad we finally managed to arrange this.

I don't think I've seen your most recent CV.

Here's a copy. I've updated a few things.

Page 134: Ingles intermedio 6

definitely a work in progress!

That's all right, I've got one right here.

How did you learn about the opening?

Through your ad in the trade journals.

An acquaintance of mine put me in touch with the company.

I saw it on your company's Internet site.

What interests you most about our firm?

I've always appreciated the inventiveness of your print ads.

Your international focus is what attracted me most.

Nolan Ryan's recent expansion has been impressive.

And what do you feel you can bring to the company?

My time spent in the creative department has made me a better account manager.

I have extensive experience in both the sales and creative departments.

My experience with new media is sorely needed here.

Your covering letter says you're unable to relocate. Would you be willing to travel

frequently?

That depends on how frequently; we're expecting our third child!

Page 135: Ingles intermedio 6

How long would I be travelling for?

I would prefer to stay at headquarters.

Well, thank you for coming to see me! We'll have an answer for you within the week.

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for seeing me!

I hope we'll see each other again soon, then.

Let me just go and check.

Oh dear! I'll go and make out another bill.

I'm afraid I can't tonight,

our machine is out of order.

No! We only accept cash or cheques.

Yes! We accept all major credit cards.

There's a bank just opposite.

What about a sweet?

Are you ready for a dessert?

Would you like to see the dessert menu?

So how many coffees is that?

Would you all like coffee?

What about a liqueur with your coffee?

How's your meal?

Is everything all right?

What can I do for you?

Right away.

Yes, of course.

I'll have the waiter bring it right away.

I'm terribly sorry.

I'll take care of that right away.

Oh dear,

I'll take it back to the kitchen, then.

Would you like me to reheat it?

This fish doesn't smell very fresh to me.

Would you like something else to replace it?

I don't want to be a killjoy but the music's too loud.

We'd need some ID for a cheque that large.Despite the problems the food was very tasty.

You've added things to the bill we never had.

I would complain to the restaurant manager about the service. I would tell him that his waiters are rude. I would inform him that the food was of a poor quality and far too cold! My comments would infuriate the manager. However, he would feel obliged to reimburse me and would apologise for the inadequate service. This would be better than nothing, but even so, I would not ever come back to this restaurant.

Watch out for Sergeant Nit-picker, he doesn't miss a

thing!

Page 148: Ingles intermedio 6

For certain jobs, suits are to be worn.

Appearance counts a great deal.

Receptionists must always be well dressed, secretaries as well, because

they are the first to come into contact with clients.

It is important for estate agents to make a good impression, just as it is

for car dealers.

Page 149: Ingles intermedio 6

They prefer to falsify important documents.

To become a company manager, you must have ambition,

motivation and talent, you have to work hard and not go to

sleep!

Then you can harvest the fruits of your labour by purchasing, for

example, a beautiful car, a flat in town, a house in the country with

several hectares of land and a villa by the sea for those well-deserved

holidays!

What items of clothing supposedly make people look more credible?

A kilt

Jeans and a jumper

A suit

A T-shirt and tennis shoes

A tie

What might happen if you are too tense?

You risk making a bad impression.

You will change career-paths.

You will find yourself with a new vocation.

You risk making a good impression.

You will look more credible.

What are the three disadvantages of becoming a worker?

You have to pay taxes.

Taking exams.

Having ambition and talent.

Lots more lie-ins.

Traffic jams are never-ending.

Page 150: Ingles intermedio 6

Commuting takes a very long time.

Being unemployed.

A uniform is compulsory for what careers?

Footballer

The police

Businessman

The army

Horticulturist

Estate agent

Appearance counts a great deal when meeting clients, but for which jobs in particular?

Soldier

Farmer

Secretary

Receptionist

Criminal

Racing driver

What jobs are usually done outdoors?

Shop assistant, waiter

Horticulturist, shepherd

Farmer, fisherman

Shepherd, ballet dancer

Horticulturist, butcher

Farmer, judge

Which of these high-risk professions are mentioned in the video?

Racing driver

Fireman

Astronaut

Trapeze artist

Page 151: Ingles intermedio 6

Fighter pilot

Deep-sea diver

What careers were said to be short-lived in the video?

Prisoner

Farmer

Dancer

Footballer

Shop assistant

Professional golfer

According to the video, you can harvest the fruits of your labour by purchasing...

a house in the country and a flat in town.

a house by the sea and a classic car.

a penthouse suite and a flat by the sea.

a beautiful car and a villa by the sea.

a flat in town and several antique ornaments.

a second-hand car and a house to renovate in the country.

What three things must you have to become a company manager?

Ambition

Talent

Apathy

Motivation

Greed

Lots of sleep

Falsified documents

What might happen if you are too tense?

You will find yourself with a new vocation.

You risk making a bad impression.

Page 152: Ingles intermedio 6

You will change career-paths.

You will look more credible.

You risk making a good impression.

Starting a new job 1 h 30

Hello, I'm Mr Paisley, Director of Human Resources. Welcome to our company!

My first day at my new job!

Hello! How are you?

Thank you! I'm ready to get to work.

First we have a number of forms for you to fill out; tax forms, health insurance,

parking...

Private health insurance?

Have you got a pen, please?

Parking? I haven't got a car!

And here's your contract. Read it carefully, it's complicated!

Is it a fixed-term contract?

How many pages is this?

What kind of contract is it?

Page 153: Ingles intermedio 6

I'm sure you have some questions.

Yes, about section 3 of the tax form...

I'd like to clarify the clause regarding overtime.

No, everything looks fine to me.

Are you satisfied with the terms of your contract?

We spoke earlier about performance-related bonuses.

Absolutely. In fact, I saw a draft last week.

Are you satisfied with the terms of your contract?

I was just wondering about performance-related bonuses.

We spoke earlier about performance-related bonuses.

Absolutely. In fact, I saw a draft last week.

I was just wondering about performance-related bonuses.

Let's see, sign here, initials there, please. I think that's all then. Come along and I'll

show you your office.

Will I meet with the director today?

I'm eager to get settled in and start working!

I'm looking forward to meeting the person I'm sharing it with!

No, Mrs Williams is in Bangkok this week.

What do you think?

Page 154: Ingles intermedio 6

It's very clean, and very large!

I like it, it's very bright.

Where are the office supplies kept?

I'll leave you to get settled in, then. Don't forget the company tour at three o'clock.

It is a big building! I'll be glad to learn my way around.

I'm looking forward to it.

All right. I'll see you at 3 pm, then?

Hi! Nick Brown. I work in the office just opposite. I'll be working with you on the H H

account.

I'll need some time to look over the file, I think.

H H Metals?

Right, Mrs Williams mentioned that account.

I think they may take their business elsewhere if we don't renegotiate our subcontract.

Are you familiar with the account at all?

It's my first day on the job!

I think so. Don't we provide parts for their products?

I was briefed earlier, but I don't know very much.

The problem is our pricing. They'd like a discount since they give us so much business.

Do you really think they'd go elsewhere?

I'll have to analyse some data before I give you an answer.

Page 155: Ingles intermedio 6

Can we afford that?

I'm glad you've arrived. We're counting on you to get us out of this rut.

Obviously there's never a dull moment around here!

I think I'll be able to get some real results here.

That's good; I'd rather be busy than bored!

Did everything go all right today?

I can't remember being so tired.

I should have brought a sandwich!

Yes, it was fine!

How did it go with the H H account?

There are a few problems, but nothing we can't resolve.

We've a lot of work to do. It's quite urgent.

I think the outlook is good.

Here's a copy of your approved contract. See you tomorrow!

Hello! How are you?

All right, see you tomorrow, then!

I was planning to buy clothes for a very special occasion. I was looking for a dress to wear at my sister's wedding. I was having difficulty finding something to fit me properly. A sales assistant was helping me to search. She was suggesting certain combinations of clothes and was helping me to find the right sizes. I was trying the clothes on in the changing rooms. I was getting frustrated as I was taking so long to find something suitable. However, the sales assistant was being very patient. Finding the right outfit was proving very difficult.

One of a store manager's many priorities is training the sales team, because they're

the ones the customers come into contact with first.

Of course, good communication between the different teams is necessary as each one

is essential to the store's smooth running.

This store with its many and varied departments is the largest in town.

You can find everything here!

It has an especially good reputation for musical instruments and household appliances.

But it's clothes that sell best.

There's a fabric department where the customer can choose material on advice from a

tailor, who will then make him a suit to measure.

Each department supervisor has a big responsibility within the store and the

managing director must have a sympathetic ear.

The best ideas often come from those who work on the ground!

What with their meetings and their appointments, the managers always have

a full diary!

Page 174: Ingles intermedio 6

Managing human resources is also part of their work.

If there's a problem, the managers must try to use diplomacy in resolving it.

Customer services are also very important.

The customer must feel that he's being looked after.

If he isn't treated politely, he won't come back and he'll spread bad publicity too.

For most outside appointments, the store is represented by sales reps,

familiar with the store's policy, who therefore know the strategy to adopt

when dealing with customers.

The orders depend on these clients' needs.

For example, this store's customers are quite young, so few classically styled

garments are sold.

That's why the store has a huge network of suppliers.

Lorries travel the length and breadth of the country to collect the most sought-after

products.

Fashion has one disadvantage: it changes quickly.

We can't risk keeping the same stock for too long; the shelves must be regularly

restocked with new styles of clothing...

So everyone can find what they're looking for, and by word of mouth, one

satisfied customer may bring in three more!

Managing human resources is also part of their work.

If there's a problem, the managers must try to use diplomacy in resolving it.

The architect

I want my new house to be functional, but I also want it to be a real home.

A project like this is an enormous task!

This has to be planned very carefully.

I'm sure we can come up with something.

Page 189: Ingles intermedio 6

I've already taken some initial proposals to the council for planning permission, and

they seem rather enthusiastic. They just want to avoid something ugly, and keep the

houses in the area similar.

So how do you envisage your new house?

What specifications do you have in mind?

That's only natural. So what did you have in mind?

Naturally, I need enough room for my three children to grow up, but my wife and I

would like a large kitchen for dinner parties.

I'd say you need at least a hundred square metres.

So we're looking at a minimum of a hundred square metres.

How many square metres are we talking here?

These sketches are very good. But I'd rather the kitchen were a little larger.

I can do that, but the bedroom would be a little smaller.

That means the downstairs bedroom would be smaller!

If I made the kitchen larger, the next room would be smaller!

So are these the final drawings, then?

Not yet. These are just rough sketches!

These are just rough sketches. There are a few more stages to go!

I'll be able to show you the final drawings in about a week.

Page 190: Ingles intermedio 6

I'm not sure I understand all this. Maybe it's not such a good idea.

Don't worry, I'll help you through it.

Let's not worry too much! I'll explain everything.

I know it looks daunting, but it's quite simple really.

Can you tell me about this blueprint here?

Of course, this is the elevation.

It's drawn to a scale of one inch to four feet.

This is the blueprint for the elevation.

So what's the next stage of the process?

We need an estimate from a contractor, and soon, we can start construction.

I have to negotiate with a contractor.

The next step involves getting a contractor's estimate.

Looking at these construction documents, I'd say we're looking at £120,000.

£120,000? Maybe I'll have to look elsewhere.

That's a very high estimate.

I really don't think that's realistic.

O.K., seeing as you've always been good to us, we'll go down to £115,000.

I can have it done by someone else for £110,000.

Page 191: Ingles intermedio 6

How about £110,000?

£110,000 and we have a deal.

My men won't be able to start work on it until we've finished our current project. It

would be May at the earliest!

May is fine. Can you confirm a date soon?

If you start in May, you have the summer to complete it.

That means you have the summer to finish the project.

I went to the site yesterday and took these photos. I can't believe it's actually

happening!

There's still a lot to do!

Don't forget, we still have a long way to go!

We'll soon be entering the final stages!

Look at this photo. Why is there a moat around the house? I know every Englishman's

home is his castle, but I didn't ask for that!

Don't worry about that. It's for the foundations!

They did that to lay the foundations.

That's for the foundations!

I still can't believe they're on schedule. The bad weather must really have affected the

beginning of the construction!

Making up for lost time is part of their job!

It was very wet at the start of summer.

Page 192: Ingles intermedio 6

The start of summer was terrible!

It's been a long process, but we've finally reached the end! To celebrate the completion

of the new house, I've laid on this buffet.

I hope you enjoy your new house!

Hot off the press

Hi! We're the students from the university newspaper. We're here for the tour.

Let's start with any questions you might have, shall we?

Welcome to the "Staining Gazette" offices!

Before we start the tour, does anyone have any questions?

I have a question: how do you assign the various tasks and stories to your reporters?

They are relatively independent: they find the stories, and I give them the go-ahead.

We hold a meeting first thing every morning.

Each department has an editor. He decides, and I oversee it.

I just wanted to ask about your readership. Do you feel your main responsibility is

community reporting or simply increasing circulation figures?

It's the community that keeps us in business!

We're essentially a community newspaper.

We sell newspapers by serving the community.

Page 195: Ingles intermedio 6

Do you have any particular sources for finding your stories?

We use press conferences and investigative reporting.

Investigative journalists often find a scoop for us!

Most of our stories come from press releases.

This might be a delicate question, but do you ever copy stories from other newspapers?

Only if we're about to miss a deadline.

I believe that's unethical journalism!

If anything, we have our stories lifted!

How do you react if one of your stories is lifted?

I'm never as angry as I should be!

That's a hazard of the profession.

Journalism is a dog eat dog world!

Do you have any breaking stories? Anything that we might be reading tonight?

The mayor is going to make an important announcement today.

I'm not at liberty to say, I'm afraid!

Well, the mayor is holding a press conference today.

This really is action packed!

This is where all the current affairs reporters work.

Page 196: Ingles intermedio 6

This office is the hub of all the action. This must be where the critics work.

We hold a meeting first thing every morning.

He may not want to talk just yet.

Absolutely, but we've sent them out to review a film!

Get an interview with the mayor, but let's not go looking for scandal, shall we?

Sorry to interrupt. I've got breaking news for you! The mayor has just resigned!

I believe that's unethical journalism!

Each department has an editor. He decides, and I oversee it.

Hold the front page!

Most of our stories come from press releases.

Absolutely, everything happens here! He didn't say exactly why he is resigning, but he

said his press coverage didn't help matters.

Let's start with any questions you might have, shall we?

He must be looking for excuses!

I'm never as angry as I should be!

We use press conferences and investigative reporting.

I'll send someone down to the town hall to try and get an interview with him.

He may not want to talk just yet.

Only if we're about to miss a deadline.

Page 197: Ingles intermedio 6

Investigative journalists often find a scoop for us!

I'm not at liberty to say, I'm afraid!

If you like, I'll carry on with the tour while you organise everyone.

We're essentially a community newspaper.

Before we start the tour, does anyone have any questions?

Can you keep with this story while I finish the tour?

We have two arts critics, but they're both conducting interviews today.

What exactly would you like me to do?

How long will it take to get a photographer there?

That's a hazard of the profession.

We sell newspapers by serving the community.

Welcome to the "Staining Gazette" offices!

A new bank account

Good morning, can I help you?

I hope so. Can I open an account?

Yes, I would like to open an account.

Page 203: Ingles intermedio 6

Can I have some information about opening an account?

Were you wanting a current account or a savings account?

I'm only here for 6 months, so a current account will be fine.

I'm not earning enough for a savings account.

I don't know, what's the difference?

You need to fill in one of these application forms and provide proof of identity and

residence.

I've got my passport with me and a letter from my landlord.

I can give you my landlord's telephone number, and I've got my driving licence with

me.

I can easily provide proof of who I am, but I haven't got a permanent address yet.

Good. Then just fill in this form and take it to the enquiry desk over there.

 All right.

There are a few questions I need to ask before we process your application. You'll need

a chequebook; how often do you want your statements?

I think monthly statements would be fine.

I'm not bothered about a chequebook, but I need some way of withdrawing cash.

Fortnightly statements, please.

Page 204: Ingles intermedio 6

Right! We'll process that and you'll get your chequebook through the post within the

next few days. You'll also get our introductory pack including a free gift.

For how long have you had a bank account with this bank? Since when have you been putting money into your savings account? For how long have you been gaining interest on your savings? For how long have you been thinking of transferring your money to another high-interest account? Since when have you been doing research into the various savings accounts available? For how long have you been waiting to talk to the bank manager?

After a long day's work behind your shop counter, you're now keen to find

out how much you've earned.

So you count the money in the till.

Many customers have settled their bills today, so there should be more money than

usual

Of course, you prefer cash payments because they go immediately into your

bank account, whereas when paying in a cheque, you always have to wait

between three and five days for it to go through!

When you're counting, make sure you separate the notes and put them all

the same way up.

This will help you when checking.

Once you've finished doing your accounts, don't forget to put the money in the night

safe at the bank.

You'll go back tomorrow morning to find out your exact balance.

Your insurance policy stipulates that the money should be in a safe place, otherwise, in

case of fire or theft, you won't be reimbursed.

The next day, you're at the bank as soon as the counters open.

The manager already has an appointment, dealing with a customer in debt!

Luckily, you put all the notes the same way up last night and your

calculations were right!

Otherwise she'd be angry with you as well!

Page 213: Ingles intermedio 6

You take advantage of the occasion to ask for a little financial advice.

You've been putting money by for a few years and now your savings are quite

considerable.

Now you'd like to invest.

Savings accounts don't interest you any more because the interest rates are too low.

So you discuss possible investments with your advisor.

He suggests you invest in property.

You're already a home owner, but he suggests you buy a second house and then rent

it.

Unfortunately you're not interested because the local and property taxes are too high.

You'd rather invest your money in new companies that have just issued

shares on the stock market.

Especially in the computer sector: it's growing fast and share prices are rocketing.

Be careful, though! Study the proposals well before speculating on the stock

market.

Finally your advisor suggests you put your money on the Frankfurt Stock

Exchange.

Before you sign anything, he asks you if you're sure you won't want to make any large

outlays in the years to come.

A few months later, you start having doubts about the value of your

investment.

Did you do the right thing investing all your savings at once?

You phone your stockbroker and ask him about the situation.

He understands that you're a little anxious, but the news is good: your shares have

gone up by twenty per cent!

Mind you don't end up catching the 'shareholders' virus' and eternally

wonder whether to sell or wait a little longer?

Why should there be more money in the till than usual?

Many customers have left tips.

You have put the prices up.

Many customers have paid their bills.

You have been running a promotion.

Page 214: Ingles intermedio 6

Many customers have forgotten their wallets.

Many customers have eaten.

Why are cash payments preferable?

They are slow.

They are easier.

They take five days to go through.

They are quick.

Banks prefer them.

They are safer.

Putting all the notes the same way up...

helps you get reimbursed.

protects you against theft.

Your insurance policy says the money...

must be in the bank.

must be all together.

must be counted.

must be in a safe.

must be the right way up.

must be safe.

Why wasn't the bank manager angry with you?

You're a shop keeper.

You're in debt too.

Page 215: Ingles intermedio 6

You wanted financial advice.

You'd put all the notes the right way up.

You put the money in the night safe.

You smiled at her.

Why is the bank manager talking with another client?

The client has stolen from the bank.

The client owes money.

The client didn't keep his money the right way up.

The client was late for his meeting.

The bank owes the client money.

Good morning, and welcome to the Cellular Phones stand.

Good morning, sir. Feel free to look around.

Good morning. My name is John Arnold, from Vogon International in Sacramento. I think

Which of the following is the best example of someone promoting a product?

This industrial dishwasher is more effective than several of the top brands. It is,

however, more expensive and uses more water.

The latest model of our industrial dishwasher has received criticism for not being

sufficiently different from other top-selling models and for using more water. However,

many people like it because it is inexpensive.

Page 223: Ingles intermedio 6

Our new industrial dishwasher is not only more effective than the expensive top-

selling models, but it is also designed to better distribute the water so that it uses less

while washing just as well.

Our newest industrial dishwasher has been a slow seller ever since its introduction,

despite its water efficiency. This is likely due to it being more expensive than similar

top-selling models. The product received an even more positive response than anticipated.

Your company gives a 5% discount on orders of more than $500 and 10% on orders of

more than $1,000. If a client asks you if your company gives discounts, what might you

say?

That depends. We don't generally offer discounts for orders of less than $500, but if

you place an order for more than $500 we'll give you 5% off. Plus, if the value of your

order exceeds $1,000 we'll give you 10% off.

We used to give discounts of 5% for orders of $500 or more, but we changed our

policy. Now there are no discounts for orders of less than $1,000, but if you place an

order valued at more than $1,000, we'll take 10% off.

If you order today, I'd be willing to knock 10% off of your order, but generally we

only give discounts of up to 5%, whether the order is valued at $500 or $1,000.

We don't have a set policy on that, but if you place an order of at least $500 I'd be

willing to give you a 5% discount. Also, if you place an order of more than $1,000 I

Questions about Berlin

Oh, David, it's nice to see you! I heard your wife just landed a new job in my home

country.

Hi Sandra! You heard right! Although some of the details still need fine-tuning, we're

fairly positive that we'll be moving to Berlin this summer.

You must be excited about the move, then?

Yes, we're fired up about the chance to live overseas. There's no excuse to pass up a

chance like this. It's a great opportunity to get to know a new culture and a new

language.

Doesn't the idea of moving halfway around the world make you nervous?

I have to admit that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by the move. I was wondering if

there was any advice you could give me based on your own experience of moving

abroad.

It can be stressful at first, but I'm sure you'll love living in Berlin.

What's your housing situation like? Do you know where you're going to be living?

No, we haven't got anything nailed down yet, but we're looking for something that's

centrally located. That way Mary's commute won't be too long.

You should check out the Mitte district. If you're lucky, you might be able to find a

place overlooking the Tiergarten park.

Page 226: Ingles intermedio 6

I'll have to look into that. Knowing that I have a place to stay in Berlin would be a real

relief. I would be overjoyed to have that problem solved before we leave!

Thanks for the tip. It would really ease my mind to have that figured out. I'd be relieved

to know that we have a place to live before leaving.

I definitely understand. Let me know if I can be of any help.

When exactly will the two of you be heading over there?

Actually, I'm staying behind to take care of unfinished business while Mary heads to

Berlin without me. Hopefully, she'll have already settled in by the time I arrive.

I'll have some last-minute details to attend to, so Mary is going over before me. By the

time I arrive, she'll have had almost two months to settle in.

Won't it be hard for her to be there alone?

I think the time will fly. When I finally get there, she'll have been taking German

lessons, so she should be able to walk me through the administrative paperwork, no

problem.

No, she'll be busy with work. She'll have been speaking German at work for almost two

months by the time I arrive, so she should even be able to give me a hand with my

papers.

Page 227: Ingles intermedio 6

Oh, that will help.

Have you got your visas lined up?

No, that's something that's still hanging over my head. From what I've heard, it can be

something of an arduous process.

Not yet. To tell you the truth, I'm a little apprehensive about the paperwork involved. I

hear they really make you jump through hoops, and it can be quite a hassle.

Have you started looking for a job in Berlin?

Preparing for the move has got me pretty busy, so it's highly unlikely that I'll have time

to look for a job before leaving. Do you have any tips to help me land a job in Berlin?

It's pretty doubtful that I'll be able to start the job hunt until I'm actually settled in over

there. Any words of advice for a foreigner looking for work in your home country?

Well, that depends. Do you know if your accounting degree is internationally

recognized?

I'm fairly sure I'll have to sign up for an equivalency program. Once I've earned my

certificate, I'll have learned all there is to know about German finance!

Page 228: Ingles intermedio 6

There is an equivalency program that sounds difficult, but a certificate will open doors

for me. By the time I've completed the program, I'll have mastered business German!

I don't think the language will be a problem, though. I have no doubt that it'll come

back to you in no time in day-to-day conversations, especially once you start working.

That's what I'm hoping! Would you be able to offer any tips on how best to adapt to

working in Germany? It'd be a shame to make a bad first impression when I finally find

a job.

I'm counting on it! While I'm here, do you have any insights into German work culture

that would be helpful? I don't want to stick out on my first day of work.

Working in Germany is a lot like working here. You'll just have to adapt to your

environment like you would in any new company.

Thanks for listening, Sandra. Talking to you has really eased my mind. I relish the

thought that in six months we'll probably be feeling right at home in Berlin!

I'm sure you're right. Talking to you has reassured me, and you've answered a lot of

my questions! I'm really looking forward to living in Berlin.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you have any other questions before you go, feel free to drop by!

Sandra: Oh, David, it's nice to see you! I heard your wife just landed a new job in my home country.

David: Hi Sandra! Yeah, it looks like we're going to be moving to Berlin this summer. A few more details still need to be ironed out, but it's pretty much a sure thing.

Page 229: Ingles intermedio 6

Sandra: Berlin!

Sandra: You must be excited about the move, then?

David: Absolutely! We're really looking forward to it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a new culture. Plus, it'll give me a chance to brush up on my German.

Sandra: It sure will! There's nothing like total immersion for learning a language.

Sandra: Doesn't the idea of moving halfway around the world make you nervous?

David: I do have some misgivings about such a significant change. I was hoping that you might be able to give me some guidance, since I know you've gone through a similar experience.

Sandra: Just try to enjoy all the new experiences that life in Berlin will offer you.

Sandra: What's your housing situation like? Do you know where you're going to be living?

David: Actually, nothing's set in stone yet, but because my wife's office is downtown, we've been hoping to find something within the city limits.

Sandra: You should check out the Mitte district. If you're lucky, you might be able to find a place overlooking the Tiergarten park.

David: Great idea! That would be a huge weight off my shoulders. I'd be thrilled if we could find a place before we relocate.

Sandra: If you'd like, I'll give you a list of websites you could use.

Sandra: When exactly will the two of you be heading over there?

David: Mary is leaving without me in May. I've got a few loose ends to tie up so I won't be joining her till later. Ideally, she'll have found her bearings by the time I get there.

Sandra: Won't it be hard for her to be there alone?

David: Actually, she'll be very busy. By the time I get there, she'll have been taking German lessons for two months, so she'll be able to help me with all the bureaucratic rigmarole.

Sandra: Yes, all the red tape can really be a headache, even if you're completely fluent in the language.

Sandra: Have you got your visas lined up?

David: That's my next step. I have to say, I'm dreading dealing with the bureaucratic aspect of the move. I've been told it can be a real nightmare.

Sandra: Have you started looking for a job in Berlin?

Page 230: Ingles intermedio 6

David: Not really. In all probability, I won't start looking for work until I get there. Do you think you could give me some pointers about finding work in Germany?

Sandra: Well, that depends. Do you know if your accounting degree is internationally recognized?

David: I've read that I'll have to enroll in a specialist training program. It'll be quite a challenge, but by the time I'm done with the program, I'll certainly have perfected my German!

Sandra: I don't think the language will be a problem, though. I have no doubt that it'll come back to you in no time in day-to-day conversations, especially once you start working.

David: I sure hope so. Do you have any words of advice to help me adjust to working in a German company? When I do find a job, I'd hate to get off on the wrong foot.

Sandra: Working in Germany is a lot like working here. You'll just have to adapt to your environment like you would in any new company.

David: Well, that sure is a load off my mind. Thanks so much for your advice, Sandra. On the whole, I can't wait to go!

Sandra: Well David, you know my door is always open if you have more questions before you go.

Why does David go to Sandra for advice?

She knows a great deal about the housing market in Berlin's Mitte district.

She can practice German with him during lunch.

She has already experienced living abroad and is familiar with Berlin.

She is a friend of Mary's and can help her find a job.

Before David can work in Germany, he will need to go back to school.

Dear Pat,I'll likely be out of the office next Thursday, but my schedule isn't yet set in stone. I'm supposed to meet with my real estate agent in the morning to finalize an agreement for an apartment I'd like to buy, but the appointment isn't a sure thing. I'm fairly uncertain how long it will take, but it's doubtful it'll last more than a few hours. It's quite possible we could meet Thursday afternoon, but I can't suggest a concrete time or place for the moment.Best regards,Shannon

It's not a done deal yet, but if all goes well we should be moving to Berlin this summer.

Actually, nothing's set in stone yet, but because my wife's office is downtown,

we've been hoping to find something within the city limits.

We haven't made any concrete decisions yet.

No, we haven't got anything nailed down yet,

Not really. In all probability, I won't start looking for work until I get there.

Not yet. To tell you the truth, I'm a little apprehensive about the paperwork involved. I

hear they really make you jump through hoops, and it can be quite a hassle.

Hi Sandra! Yeah, it looks like we're going to be moving to Berlin this summer. A few

more details still need to be ironed out, but it's pretty much a sure thing.

Definitely. Mary and I are ecstatic about moving! We're both looking forward to putting

our German into practice.

I'll have to look into that. Knowing that I have a place to stay in Berlin would be a real

relief. I would be overjoyed to have that problem solved before we leave!

No, that's something that's still hanging over my head. From what I've heard, it can be

something of an arduous process.

Mary is leaving without me in May. I've got a few loose ends to tie up so I won't be

joining her till later. Ideally, she'll have found her bearings by the time I get there.

I do have some misgivings about such a significant change. I was hoping that you

might be able to give me some guidance, since I know you've gone through a similar

experience.

Page 235: Ingles intermedio 6

That's what I'm hoping! Would you be able to offer any tips on how best to adapt to

working in Germany? It'd be a shame to make a bad first impression when I finally find

a job.

I think the time will fly. When I finally get there, she'll have been taking German

lessons, so she should be able to walk me through the administrative paperwork, no

problem.

No, we haven't got anything nailed down yet, but we're looking for something that's

centrally located. That way Mary's commute won't be too long.

Great idea! That would be a huge weight off my shoulders. I'd be thrilled if we could

find a place before we relocate.

Not really. In all probability, I won't start looking for work until I get there. Do you think

you could give me some pointers about finding work in Germany?

No, that's something that's still hanging over my head. From what I've heard, it can be

something of an arduous process.

I sure hope so. Do you have any words of advice to help me adjust to working in a

German company? When I do find a job, I'd hate to get off on the wrong foot.

Yes, we're fired up about the chance to live overseas. There's no excuse to pass up a

Luke: Hi, you must be Audrey. Thanks so much for agreeing to meet with me today. To make sure I get my business started off on the right foot, I really need to do my research.

Audrey: No problem, I'm glad I can help. Sounds like you've got some big plans ahead of you.

Luke: Yes. That I do.

Luke: So what made you decide to open the first Audrey's Petal Shoppe?

Audrey: I had been considering starting my own flower shop for quite some time, and when my sister finished up her business management degree, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Page 242: Ingles intermedio 6

Luke: I see.

Luke: It takes a lot of courage and energy to take on such a big project, not to mention the financial investment. It must have been difficult to come up with the funding for such a project.

Audrey: Well, actually it wasn't nearly as hard as you'd think.

Luke: Really? That's definitely something I'm struggling with. If you don't mind my asking, could you explain how you went about that?

Audrey: We wrote up a very detailed business plan and emphasized what our store would contribute to the local community. The bank seemed to be very impressed.

Luke: Wow, that's great!

Luke: Did it take long to get things up and running?

Audrey: Even though it was quite time-consuming, we enjoyed what we were doing. We first opened our doors in 1993, just nine months after getting the loan approved.

Luke: You worked quickly, then.

Luke: What made you decide to venture into online sales?

Audrey: We wanted to find a way to boost sales in our first store in order to open a second one. We thought that having our own website would help increase our numbers.

Luke: I see.

Luke: And what kind of effect did your first webpage have on sales?

Audrey: The initial results were not nearly as consequential as we had hoped because we designed the site ourselves and got in way over our heads.

Luke: Oh, that's too bad.

Luke: So what was your next move, then?

Audrey: After our initial setback, we decided to join forces with a web designer, whom we took on as part-time staff. He revamped our page, making it more attractive and user-friendly.

Luke: That's great.

Luke: And in hindsight, was that a good decision for the company?

Audrey: Absolutely. This move contributed to a significant rise in both our in-store and online sales, which allowed us to open up two more locations in the city.

Luke: That's great! So you've just continued along that path up till now?

Page 243: Ingles intermedio 6

Audrey: Not exactly. We wanted to keep growing, so we sought out some alternative strategies that would allow us to expand our client base.

Luke: Uh-huh...

Luke: And how did you go about that?

Audrey: Although we struggled a bit at first to decide which route to take, we finally decided to propose a partnership with The Gift Manager. Have you heard of them?

Luke: No, I'm afraid I haven't.

Luke: What exactly do they do?

Audrey: It's a Chicago-based online gift company that specializes in personalized corporate gifts. It just seemed logical to add flowers to the list of products they offer.

Luke: Oh, yes. That does sound familiar, now that you mention it.

Luke: How has the partnership affected your business?

Audrey: There were some hurdles to jump early on, but over time it became even more successful than we'd imagined it would.

Luke: How did you turn things around?

Audrey: We renegotiated the contract and invested in a joint advertisement on local television. Our overall sales figures have skyrocketed since then. We couldn't be happier about it.

Luke: That's great to hear!

Luke: So, now what's in store for Audrey's Petal Shoppe?

Audrey: We're anticipating quite a bit of recruitment in the next couple of months. We really need to reinforce our teams before the busy holiday season.

Luke: I can imagine it gets pretty hectic that time of year.

Luke: Are there any other avenues of growth you foresee in the years to come?

Audrey: We want to use the momentum created by this partnership to help us corner the market for corporate events. Analyzing some new marketing techniques is also on our agenda.

Luke: That's great. It sounds like things are really going well for you, Audrey.

Hi, you must be Audrey. Thanks so much for agreeing to meet with me today. To make

sure I get my business started off on the right foot, I really need to do my research.

Oh, it's my pleasure. I'm glad to help out. From what I've heard from Susan, it sounds

like you're on the right track.

I'm happy to help. It seems like just a few years ago I was in your shoes, trying to get

my own business up and running.

So what made you decide to open the first Audrey's Petal Shoppe?

Well, Audrey's started when my sister and I decided to put our heads together and

open a flower shop in town. She had just graduated from business school, so the timing

was perfect

It takes a lot of courage and energy to take on such a big project, not to mention the

financial investment. It must have been difficult to come up with the funding for such a

project.

Surprisingly enough, coming up with the funding was far easier than we'd thought it

would be. Really? That's definitely something I'm struggling with. If you don't mind my

asking, could you explain how you went about that?

In our business proposal, we made sure to highlight how much our store could bring to

the community. The bank seemed to be almost as enthusiastic about it as we were.

Page 246: Ingles intermedio 6

Underlining what our business would bring to the local community helped the bank to

see that our intentions were good. The rest just fell into place without a hitch.

Did it take long to get things up and running?

Just about nine months after the loan was approved, we were able to celebrate our

grand opening. Although it took a lot of time and work, it was really worth it in the end.

Not as long as you'd think. We worked hard for nine months and were able to open our

doors just in time for Mother's Day. That was very rewarding.

What made you decide to venture into online sales?

In a big city like this, it's easy to be invisible to people. We needed to find a way to

make ourselves seen and promote company growth. A good website seemed to be the

key.

I knew that if we wanted to be competitive in today's market, we'd have to keep up

with technology in order to grow and expand, which, even back then, meant having a

webpage.

And what kind of effect did your first webpage have on sales?

Page 247: Ingles intermedio 6

There were a few unforeseen problems after the page was launched, most likely due to

the fact that we created the site ourselves. We didn't realize how much work it would

be.

It wasn't quite what we had hoped for, because the page was not very user-friendly.

We tried to design the site ourselves, but we just didn't have the know-how

So what was your next move, then?

We decided it was time to expand our staff by hiring a web designer. He really got the

site off the ground and sparked people's interest with it.

Although the first site did not go as planned, we were convinced that online sales

would be our key to success, so we decided to hire a web designer.

And in hindsight, was that a good decision for the company?

It was. It worked out very well. The newly designed website brought us a great deal of

business, and things just snowballed from there.

Yes. And thanks to his expertise, our sales figures started to climb steadily, allowing us

to invest in a second, and later on, a third store.

That's great! So you've just continued along that path up till now?

Page 248: Ingles intermedio 6

No, actually, we wanted to make sure that our client base would continue to grow, so

we did some research to find out how we could extend our reach and attract new

clients.

Well, no. We didn't stop there. We were on a roll, so we decided to try to reach a

different kind of client.

And how did you go about that?

We mulled it over for quite some time before we came to a conclusion. We decided to

offer our services to The Gift Manager in the form of a partnership.

After much deliberation, we finally decided to propose a partnership agreement to The

Gift Manager. Have you heard of them before?

What exactly do they do?

They're a first-rate corporate gift company that sells exclusively online. They were

looking to add flowers to their product line, so we jumped at the chance.

They sell a wide variety of high-end personalized corporate gifts online. Flowers

seemed to be just the thing they were missing.

How has the partnership affected your business?

Page 249: Ingles intermedio 6

Even though we had our share of ups and downs in the beginning, by the end of the

deal, we were quite pleased with the results.

Although it had little effect at first, the end result was far more successful than we'd

thought it would be.

How did you turn things around?

It took some reworking of the contract as well as a mutual effort and investment for

advertising, but now it seems to be a win-win situation.

Some renegotiating was necessary to get things moving in the right direction, but it's

been smooth sailing ever since.

Actually, it wasn't as big of a challenge as we had expected.

So, now what's in store for Audrey's Petal Shoppe?

We hope to increase our overall staff by nearly 20% this year. It's an optimistic

number, but we feel it's an attainable goal based on last year's sales figures.

That's great to hear, Audrey

Are there any other avenues of growth you foresee in the years to come?

Page 250: Ingles intermedio 6

At this point, we are preparing an offer for some commercial space on 12th Avenue.

We also plan to implement some new marketing strategies next year.

We are planning to reinforce our delivery network and up our marketing efforts this

year. We also foresee opening a fourth location in the city by the end of next year.

Well, any new venture can be a roller coaster, so some ups and downs are to be

expected, but I'm sure things will smooth themselves out quickly.

I think you're not as worried as you could be about the takeover. The hurdles we

face are overwhelming, and there are no guarantees that we will be more efficient in

the end.

I agree, and I'm just as concerned as you are about the drawbacks that a takeover

would have. I worry that other clients will feel the same way.

Any new venture can be a roller coaster, so some ups and downs are to be expected.

The forecast for the next quarter is not nearly as high as we had hoped, although

Which of the following sentences could you use to minimize the problems your team

faced with the company's latest ad campaign?

We had some unforeseen expenses that ate up a lot of the revenue we generated.

We hit a hitch in the fourth week of our campaign when the newspaper workers

went on strike.

Even though the late start was quite a setback, we still managed to generate

decent sales figures.

Our predictions were flawed because we didn't target the right demographic.

I'm the sales manager. You must be Mr. Johnson.

You're talking to him! I take it you're Mr. Johnson.

Pleased to meet you. My appointment's for 10.15, but I'm a little early. I wasn't sure

No problem. Is this your first time in the States?

You come back with Mr. Johnson's coffee.

O.K.! I'm all yours.

Sorry to have kept you waiting.

Well! As I mentioned when we last spoke, we intend to equip our car rental fleet with

car phones.

How big is your fleet?

Page 264: Ingles intermedio 6

We operate about 2000 vehicles, and we plan to equip roughly 10 percent with car

phones.

We can give you a good price on two hundred units.

So we're looking at two hundred units, right?

What sort of discount could you give us for an order of that size?

How about 10 percent off the list price?

We can offer you 10 percent on our basic model.

That model's no longer available.

The person is looking for a luxury model that combines durability and classic

As you can see from the catalog, we're offering our latest high-end model at a very

As you can see, our latest model is a state-of-the-art product with sleek new

features. I'm willing to knock off $100 from the list price to fit your budget.

As you can see from the catalog, our newest model is unbeatable in terms of

efficiency, design quality, and special features. I think you'll find it meets your needs

perfectly.

Your client owns the older model of a briefcase you are selling. You want to suggest

that he purchase the latest model since it has new and improved features and would

The new model is completely different from the old one, so I'm sure you'd prefer it.

None of the features are the same. I can offer it to you for $40 instead of $60.

Our new model has new features and an improved design, but I'm not sure you'd

notice a difference in terms of convenience or comfort. If you're interested, though, I'll

give you a special $60 discount.

Our new model looks a lot like the one you own, but it has completely new

features. I really think you'd be happier with the design of the new one. Would a $40

discount work for you?

The new model has all the features you love, but it is more lightweight and

compact. I think it would allow you even greater comfort and convenience. It's listed at

$60 but I'll be happy to take off $20

Okay! Let's get down to business.

Great. Let's move right along, then.

Let's get started, then, shall we?

We can give you a good price on two hundred units.

How about 10 percent off the list price?

We can offer you 10 percent on our basic model.

Yes, on that model we could give you 15 percent.

Oh yes! If anything, slightly better.

It's less expensive thanks to improved manufacturing.

Oh yes! The quality's just as good.

How quickly can you get back to me?

Please be patient. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I'm sure I can give you an answer by tomorrow.

Your next meeting is via videoconference with the general manager of a large U.S.

supermarket chain. Sitting at your desk at Cellular Phones, you can see Mr. Flowers, on

the screen, sitting behind his desk.

Mr. Flowers, I'm very pleased to see you again.

Glad to meet you, Mr. Flowers.

I met your assistant at the trade show.

I was interested in your lightweight cell phones.

Where would you be using them?

With any special features, or just the basic model?

What in particular did you like about them?

The phones would be used to contact managers in larger stores and warehouses. The

loudspeaker systems we looked at can't handle our current on-site demands.

Page 272: Ingles intermedio 6

The GSM 173 would fit your needs perfectly.

That's what my assistant thought when she saw the brochure.

I'll be honest with you, though; we are also looking at a Futronics model. It got some

very good press at the trade show in Boston.

A very slim model, not cumbersome at all.

I appreciate your honesty. It's nice to know where we stand.

Yes, I saw it there, too.

We were hoping to install a minimum of ten phones per location.

How many locations did you have in mind roughly?

Obviously keeping future expansion in mind.

That shouldn't be too difficult to install.

All of our warehouses, to start with. So that would be around thirty.

These systems are easy to set up. It's when they break down that the real problems

begin.

It should take us at least a month to equip thirty locations.

It would normally take a day or two to install the cables and another to train your staff.

That doesn't happen often, does it?

Page 273: Ingles intermedio 6

It sounds like there's some doubt in your mind. How long might it really take, looking at

the worst-case scenario?

At the moment we're snowed under with work.

Business must have improved tremendously when you won the trade show award.

So how long?

I really can't be specific. I can promise an excellent discount, though.

Let's say seventy days. But you'd get a good discount to compensate for the delay.

Once we receive the phones, I'd say no more than two months.

I'd expect a discount of around 20%.

Well listen, I need some time to think about this. I'm still considering Futronics, but I am

leaning more towards you.

Remember that Futronics' phones still haven't been put to the test. Ours have been

tested and are reliable.

Don't forget who won the award, and that we're synonymous with quality and value.

I'm glad to hear that, Mr.Flowers.

Yes, and I don't want to have to upgrade the phones in a couple of years. I'll get back to you. Bye.

Dear Mrs Hunt, It is with regret that I must inform you of my intention to resign from my position as Marketing Manager at Camaxsi. My notice will be effective two months from today.I have enjoyed working at this company over the last three years, but I feel it is time for a new challenge. Although I have learned many invaluable things during my time at Camaxsi, I have accepted a post in which I feel I will be stretched further.Although I hope to personally oversee the handover to my successor, the Sales Manager will handle this should I leave before a replacement has been found.I wish you and the company much success in the future.Yours sincerely,Ralph Mendelson

Let's discuss this again tomorrow.

expenses

You are negotiating with a new distributor, who explains the following: Our biggest

expense is overseas delivery. Ground deliveries in Europe cost us hardly anything as

we use our company's trucks. But overseas deliveries to Asia cost much more because

not only have shipping expenses increased, but taxes have too. Which response would

be the most appropriate to negotiate with her?

If you agree to the 40% discount in our proposal, you could use one of our

company's trucks for ground deliveries, and we could pay taxes in Europe.

If you agree to the 40% discount in our proposal, we will be happy to pay for

overseas shipping and to pay for taxes in Asia.

You are negotiating with a new distributor, who explains the following: You have a very

interesting product, but I don't think we can take the risk of distributing it in China if

another company is distributing your product in Japan, for example. At the same time,

if we are the sole distributors, how can we be sure that the product will be the success

you say it will? Which answer would be the most appropriate in this situation?

We would be more than willing to give you exclusive distribution rights in Asia. How

about a trial period of six months to begin with? Then we can look at our contract

again.

We do already have a distributor in Japan, and he assures us that our product is a

great success over there.

We would be willing to give you exclusive distribution rights in China, of course. We

can look at our contract in six months' time to see if you would like to renew it.

We will make sure that, for now, our product isn't sold in Japan. If it is a success in

China, perhaps we can look for a distributor in Japan in six months' time.

We are looking for China's best distributor.
