The University of the Aegean, situated on the island of Lesvos in the northern Aegean Sea, was founded in 1984. It offers 18 undergraduate, 28 postgraduate as well as PhD degree programs in modern interdisciplinary thematic areas such as environment, communication systems, cultural informatics, product design, food and nutritional sciences, education design and Mediterranean studies. During their visit students were informed about studying at the Department of the Environment and about working as environmental engineers all over the world. For a day they lived like University students and experienced the academic atmosphere. More specifically, their visit to the biology lab gave them substantial motivation and fresh stimuli so that they may decide to make the University of the Aegean part of their study plans. As a matter of fact some of them expressed their desire to do so. At the lab they observed the parts of the cells (nucleus, mitochondrion, Golgi apparatus e.t.c.) through microscopes and plants through stereoscopes. It was very interesting for them to see pictures of cells as well as bacteria cultures. For their next visit the lab assistants made a commitment to have DNA from several plant cells isolated as well as offer students the opportunity to observe human tissue.
