Discovering chocolate

Introduction

In this work we will talk about the history, curiosities, records and deaths caused by the chocolate.As you know the chocolate is one of the most apreciated foods in the world, having many uses: cakes, beauty products, movies, books… We hope you enjoy this work. BON APPETIT!!!

History of chocolate

In 600 a.c Mayas established the first known cocoa plantations in Central America that was used as money in trade.

Christopher Columbus brought cocoa beans to Europe in 1502, but Ferdinand, King of Spain did not like the cocoa.

In the year of 1528, Cortes brought back the recipe of cocoa and chocolate drink to Europe and the Spanish kept the chocolate a secret for a century.

In 1519, the Spaniard Hernan Cortes landed in Mexico, where he drank his first cup of chocolate Aztec called xocoatl, who had a bitter and spicy, a reddish color and a foam floating on the surface.

Later in the year of 1657 opens London's first chocolate house, but it was exclusive to the upper classes.

The first chocolate for eating is done in 1674, about a century after Cortes had found the chocolate drink.

In 1765, opens the first chocolate factory in the United States of America.

Spanish and the chocolateSpain kept the secret of chocolate about 100

years.

During this time, the Spanish began to refine its own recipe of chocolate liquid. They added all kinds of ingredients - sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, almonds and hazelnuts - to make the bitter liquid nicer.

Chocolate was also promoted as a beneficial drug. Many doctors said that it was healthy, refreshing and helping digestion.

Slaves of chocolateMany people died because of the chocolate:

•The trip to the West Indies or the Americas take 6 to 9 weeks. Many slaves died on the road.

•The slaves who survived were working for free plantations.

•A foreman whipped slaves to work more.

•Slavery was not abolished in Britain and the colonies in 1833.

Records of chocolate1.The best selling chocolate:

Over the past ten years the world has eaten more kit kats than any other chocolate bar, for example, in 1995 we ate more than 13 billion.

2. Most tablet: In 1997, Cadbury established the largest

chocolate bar in the world. It was a gigantic version of a Dairy Milk and was 2.8 m long and weighed 1.1 tonnes.

3. The champions of the consumption of chocolate:

A study done in 1998 put Britain in the top league of world consumption of chocolate. The British eat 16kg of chocolate a year - an average of one tablet per day.

4. The oldest cocoa bean:

The cocoa bean has more than 300 years old and is on display at the Natural History Museum in London.

5. The largest Easter egg: It was 5.42 m and was made in Belgium.

6. The first chocolate ice cream: The Danish merchant Christian Nelson sold the first chocolate ice cream in the U.S. in 1921. He had this idea when a boy of 8 years came in his store and was unable to decide between a chocolate bar and an ice cream.

8. The best chocolate to stay awake:The first man to fly around the world was Willy Post in 1933. The flight lasted 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes. To stay awake, they ate dozens of tablets chocolate.

7. The most expensive chocolate:

The most expensive chocolate, you can not even prove was sold at auction by 13 million in 1990. In reality it is a picture of French impressionist Renoir called "A cup of chocolate", which shows a woman sipping chocolate.

1.Noble wrong

A noble of the French court of Louis XIIV, was poisoned with chocolate, for his wife when he left.

2. Marquis evil

According to reports, the evil De Sade once gave a ball and served poisoned chocolate chips for dessert. After the ball many guests were terribly bad mood, and some eventually die.
