Role and Mandate of Task Force

• From the PMB minutes, Sept. 3, 2004:TF should offer guidance for the planning of EGEE-2

The main tasks of the TF are • to identify the boundary conditions (financial, technical, and

administrative) for EGEE-2 and • to advise the PMB on the setup of the editorial board (EB)

for the writing of the proposal outline.

The EGEE Vision

From the EGEE Proposal:• “EGEE aims to integrate current national, regional and

thematic Grid efforts, in order to create a seamless European Grid infrastructure for the support of the ERA.”

• “The EGEE vision is that this Grid infrastructure will provide European research in academia and industry with a common market of computing resource, enabling round-the-clock access to major distributed computing resources, independent of geographic location.”

• “EGEE is a two-year project conceived as part of a four-year programme. Major implementation milestones after two years will provide the basis for assessing subsequent objectives and funding needs.”

Project Objectives

From the 1st Review Report:

Assessment of objectives:• “The objectives of the project are still more than

relevant. The project is in the unique position to take a leading role in areas such as application-driven development of Grid middleware, geographically distributed training and induction of large and diverse user communities, policy and international cooperation development, global-scale operations of production-quality Grid infrastructure, Grid security and software development and quality assurance policies.”

Outline of Second Phase

The TF recommends • on a natural continuation of the project’s first phase with

mostly the same partners and necessary minor adjustments on the basis of the input from the activities and especially taking into account the input from the reviewers.

INFSO-RI-508833

Mission of EGEE

• EGEE 1: Large-scale deployment of the EGEE infrastructure to deliver production level Grid services

• EGEE 2:Extension of EGEE to a larger user community (in terms of application diversity)with approx. the same funding and duration

Boundary Conditions

• A broad spectrum of applications has already started in EGEE-1 and should be continued and increased towards a multidisciplinary grid infrastructure.

• The role of the driving (pilot) applications should be maintained.

• The members of the TF and the PEB discussed the general outline of the proposal containing the boundary conditions for EGEE-2.

• The details of specific tasks inside each activity have not yet been addressed

• These directions ONLY refer to programme of work and do not attempt to identify partners or level of effort required

Relation to Other Projects

From the 1st EU Review: • Additional activities could be spun off to other related

projects• EGEE should support other projects which use the EGEE

infrastructure EGEE as an incubator

• The actual scope of the proposal will be influenced based on decisions regarding the recently submitted related proposals (EU Calls March: 18 proposals related to EGEE) and possible future proposals (EU Calls September)

Staff Retention

The TF acknowledges the following facts raised by the EU reviewers:

• “The project builds on excellent people”• “The project personnel is found to be excellent”• Reviewer recommendation: “People make the difference.

Invest in staff retention immediately. Good staff retention management will be key to success”

• Staff retention is very important! • The experts of EGEE-1 are a very valuable human

resource of our project

Plan for the Future

• PMB leads the way to the proposal submission, coordinates the interaction between PEB, TF and EB and the input from the federations

• PEB continues to discuss the details and provides input on the technical aspects

• TF remains active in guiding the draft of the proposal• EB starts working on the outline of the proposal

• May: First draft outline of the proposal• June/July: Proposal writing• August: Final administrative adjustments only • September 7, 2005: Deadline for Submissions
