Roadside communications:ERH is committed to working with clients, designers and major contractors to improve connectivity; ensuring safety and value whilst minimising potential disruption.

Our qualified and experienced teams provide a specialised service that encompasses all survey, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance activities. Our core communications activities cover the installation, testing, preventative maintenance and fault management of Communications Network Infrastructure including traditional cabling and blown fibre communications cabling.

Highway technologiesA sound communications network facilitates intelligent infrastructure and enables us to support the implementation of a wide variety of highway technologies, such as;

• Variable Message Signs (VMS)

• CCTV Systems

• Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERT)

• Smart Motorway equipment such as MIDAS & radar

• Power & communications cabinets

• Meteorological equipment

We install duct, sub duct, blown fibre or traditional cable systems including splicing, termination, testing and commissioning.

What is Blown Fibre?A cabling solution using glass fibre optic cables, blown through a ducting pipe. A coated “blow able” optical fibre is blown through a micro duct using compressed air. Blown Fibre offers more flexibility, better damage recovery performance and is future proof in relation to expanding the network capacity.

Benefits of Blown FibreThe more innovative blown fibre system provides a number of benefits:

• simplified planning and faster installation make it a more cost effective solution;

• reduced capital expenditure as the ground works to install the network only have to be done once and you can add to it as required;

• easy expansion once the ducting is in place as the network can be expanded by simply blowing more fibres, or blowing the old fibre out and bigger fibres in;

• a ‘greener’ solution, compared to copper cable.

Asset managementWe also provide a professional maintenance management and fault response and repair service for roadside and road tunnel communications, electrical & mechanical systems and equipment. Our skilled personnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year to ensure roadside communications are fully operational for safer road travel.

Traffic management:Offering a full traffic management planning and consulting service with extensive experience from conception to final completion.

ROADSIDE COMMUNICATIONS | CIVIL ENGINEERING | TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT | TECHNOLOGY

Accredited to National Highway Sector Schemes 12A/B and 12D, the ERH in-house traffic management team supports our day-to-day activities and undertakes traffic management framework contracts working directly for Local Authorities, major contractors, consultants and Trunk Road Agents.

Our traffic management design teams work collaboratively with clients to ensure works are programmed to meet their needs; maximising safety and available working space, whilst minimising disruption to road users. This is delivered by our traffic management planning and consulting service, who provide assistance to clients using their extensive experience; from conception to tender stage, through the contract and to final completion.

We have a number of experienced, directly employed, Traffic Safety and Control Officers who support our traffic management operations. We have also invested in specially adapted traffic management vehicles; ensuring our crews have the latest equipment with which to undertake this type work.

ERH has also established an in-house AutoCAD facility, enabling us to deliver National Highway Sector Scheme 12A/B installations.

Case studies

Roadside communicationsA465 Section 2 & 3 – Gilwern to Brynmawr / Brynmawr to Clydach

A regional traffic study in 1990 identified the need to improve the A465, defining it as critical to the social and economic regeneration of the Heads of the Valleys area. Accidents on this stretch were concentrated around junctions and areas with poor visibility.

The civils works were delivered by Costain (Section 2) and Carillion (Section 3). Working with both contractors, ERH, under the Ancillary Works Framework (Welsh Government), provided the installation, cabling, testing and commissioning of CCTV cameras, Average Speed Cameras, Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERT) and all associated cabinets. We also provided the Traffic Management using our in-house team.

The improvements not only increase safety but also improve access to key services, jobs and markets supporting inward investment to areas such as the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone.

Civil engineeringTrowbridge Mawr Estate Regeneration Scheme, Cardiff

The City of Cardiff Council has a commitment to improve the condition of its housing stock, in line with the requirements of the Welsh Housing Quality Standards. In order to achieve this, improvements to the Trowbridge Mawr Estate needed to be made.

ERH undertook Phase 2 of regeneration works, commencing in January 2016 and completing in March 2017.

Works included the provision of hardstands, front boundary walls / railings, rear boundary walls, associated public realm / highway improvement works including footway and carriageway resurfacing, service diversions, street lighting works, construction of steps and ramped access within the adopted highway boundary, landscaping works and rear courtyard improvements for flats.

As with any project like this, where we are active in a highly populated urban area, we endeavored to ensure that the disruption caused during the improvement works was kept to a minimum. By working with the local authorities, and by liaising with the residents, we were able to progress the project and deliver successfully.

Traffic managementSecond Severn Crossing Bridge

ERH secured a project to replace a Variable Message Sign (VMS) and barrier on the eastern approach to the Second Severn Crossing. Due to the sign being adjacent to the M4 (high speed road), the works required a permanent hard shoulder closure and lane 1 and 2 closures at certain times.

ERH used its in-house traffic management team to install the permanent hard shoulder closure using the Varioguard Vehicle Restraint System (VRS). We also implemented a daytime (0930-1530) Lane 1 closure and when required Lanes 1 and 2.

TechnologySouth Wales Trunk Roads CCTV Upgrade

Under the Ancillary Works Framework (Welsh Government), ERH upgraded the analogue CCTV to IP. The CCTV cameras are used to monitor the Trunk Roads and can be accessed by the public through the Traffic Wales website.

We supplied and installed the back-office system and the IP converters to enable the existing analogue cameras to be used, providing a cost saving to the client. Stakeholders included local authorities and emergency services. The core system was also installed in North Wales, however during the first phase the cameras could only be viewed from here.

ERH is now working on the system in North Wales to upgrade this network to IP and bring it fully online.
